Bio:

Thirteen albums into Paradise Lost's 20+ year career, namedropping is pointless. The only band they can and should be held up against for comparison and consideration is Paradise Lost. With a career dating back to 1988, and their official recording debut in 1990 (Lost Paradise), the band has been riding and rollercoaster of highs and lows that began in earnest with their fourth album, Icon, in 1993. It presented Paradise Lost as a band that had more to offer beyond their established doom-death metal sound, driving the point home in 1995 with Draconian Times, an album that is considered to be a goth metal benchmark to this very day. That they would follow their international breakthrough with a slide into the realms of electronica only two years later (One Second) boggled the collective mind of Paradise Lost’s devout fanbase, yet their new direction earned a following of its own. The band made a gradual return to the swamp that spawned them, however, beginning with 2002’s Symbol Of Life. Elements of their favoured doom-goth sound grew consistently darker and louder with each album that followed, and each time the curiosity as to how far Paradise Lost would take this comeback grew. It’s fair to say the band’s new outing, Tragic Idol, is the album fans of the Icon and Draconian Times era have been waiting on the edge of their seats for.Recorded at The Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire, England, with vocals laid down at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden and produced, mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (OPETH, BORKNAGAR), Tragic Idol is a no-holds-barred album that, according to guitarist Greg Mackintosh, was “influenced more by classic metal and classic doom metal than anything else.” Lead-off track ‘Solitary One’ the closing dirge of ‘The Glorious End’ echo this statement with their crushing doom approach, while the sledgehammer riffs of ‘Crucify’, ‘To The Darkness’ and ‘In This We Dwell’ draw Paradise Lost out of the goth realm, simultaneously pulling naysayers of the genre into the darkness. This is par for the entire course of Tragic Idol; for every plodding doom-oriented track there is a song loaded with traditional metal riffs and guitar leads, making it a feast for anyone who takes pleasure in being crushed by a wall of guitars.Vocalist Nick Holmes leads the charge, as always, singing his guts out rather than opting to growl and croon his way through the proceedings. In a day and age when gothic metal is often defined by how closely the vocalist can mimic the late and great Peter Steele (TYPE O NEGATIVE), Holmes attacks with a diversity and aggression that raises the bar for veteran would-be goth heroes and newcomers to the scene.Holmes’ lyrics have always been traditionally dark and introspective, and Tragic Idol is no exception. There are no verses for the fantasy and folk metal set, no tales of boy-meets-girl; he chooses instead to focus on the depths of stark reality.“I wrote a lot about truth and honesty,” says Holmes. “We've got a song called ‘Honesty In Death’, and (my) initial thoughts were about how humble death makes people, how insignificant little problems are. It makes you realize what’s really important in life.”As for calling the album Tragic Idol, it’s the appropriate title for an album unleashed upon a modern day society that, in general, believes all that glitters is gold. The title track is a classic case of Paradise Lost putting life in perspective and pounding the message home:“It’s about the beauty and innocence of youth,” Holmes says of ‘Tragic Idol’. “Worshipping another human being with an equal amount of susceptibility to pain, suffering and depression as the next person, but by some chance has been propelled into some godlike status. Adulation eats away and makes the person ugly on the inside, believing their self importance to be above others, not realizing their insignificance and irrelevance in the grand scheme of things.”Tragic Idol as a whole isn’t merely Paradise Lost’s long-awaited return to form; it’s a soundtrack inspired by life, served up as a well-meant kick in the teeth.

Album:

PARADISE LOST is not a band that does too many compilations (Live albums aside), unlike a lot of bands that release a greatest hits album after ever two studio albums, PARADISE LOST in their illustrious quarter of a century long career have released only one compilation album titled "Reflections" and that was a long time ago, and so it's time for the bands second compilation, and once again, the band surprises, instead of releasing the standard "best of", they have decided to treat the fans with a B-sides and rarities compilation. So, what's in store for us? A lot of things we haven't heard, or at least things that people who haven't been able to get the special editions of their latest albums haven't heard. That's right; the album consists of mainly bonus tracks that were featured on digipack / vinyl / special editions of the bands albums, in addition to some covers. The real gem are re-recordings of two of the bands classic songs "Our Savior" from the band’s debut "Lost Paradise" and "Gothic" of the sophomore album of the same name. The record is more intended for fans than the general public, some things are just fascinating to hear.Take "Missing" for example, it's a cover of dance duos EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL hit single, a song that I personally never considered as a candidate for a Doom / Gothic Metal reworking, but having first heard it on the special edition of the band’s 2007 masterpiece "In Requiem" I was surprised at how well it worked, a rather dramatic rendition with the classic PARADISE LOST edge to it.I also greatly recommend you go out of your way to check out the 2013 re-recordings of "Our Savior" and "Gothic", the band did a fantastic job updating these classic with a modern production and allowing the listener the rare chance to hear what these songs would sound had their classic albums been recorded today, the re-recordings feature very heavy growling vocals from frontman Nick Holmes (especially on "Our Savior") with updated production values and improved musicianship on the part of the entire band. The tracks however lose none of their edge with the newer production as they keep their classic feel.If I was to find any fault with the compilation is that I would have liked to see "Walk Away" a SISTERS OF MERCY cover, or "How Soon is Now" a SMITHS cover both released during the "Draconian Times" period, but those are minor gripes as this album gives a glimpse at some rare and fascinating material.

Album:

In addition to our Maximum Metal sampler the new issue yet another CD called MAXIMUM PLAGUE with ten songs included. Two of them are on the tracks of 3.6. appearing Paradise Lost album THE PLAGUE WITHIN - 'No Hope In Sight' and 'Punishment Through Time'. According to guitarist Gegor Mackintosh both songs together allow the listener a rough idea of how the new album sounds a whole. The other eight songs are live tracks recorded during the concert for the 25th anniversary of the band at London's Roundhouse. "The recordings sound very convincing. The mix lasted for months, but our mixers have conjured up and brought out the best possible outcome," says singer Nick Holmes.

Album:

"Beneath Broken Earth", the new video from British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST, can be seen below. The clip was directed by Ash Pears of AshTV Music Video.Comments PARADISE LOST guitarist Greg Mackintosh: "I fucking hate metal band performance videos, so when I got told that we needed to do one, I was obviously annoyed but then came the idea to do a performance video of utter misery. The slowest song we have ever recorded."'Beneath Broken Earth' is utter, old-school PARADISE LOST doom/death song and doing a performance video with our miserable, old faces barely moving in a crappy, old basement was too much to resist."The director Ash has done a great job of capturing the sombre mood and has managed to make a performance video we can actually be proud of.""Beneath Broken Earth" is taken from PARADISE LOST's new album, "The Plague Within", which will be released on June 2 (one day earlier internationally) via Century Media. The CD was recorded at Orgone Studios (GHOST, ULVER, CATHEDRAL, ANGEL WITCH) in London with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano. The official lyric video for the PARADISE LOST track "No Hope In Sight", taken from "The Plague Within", can be seen below. The band comments: "'No Hope In Sight' was one of the first tracks we wrote and it reflects a blend of styles. From death metal to gothic to classic rock. It's like all eras of PARADISE LOST wrapped up into one track. We hope you all like it!"Regarding the musical direction of "The Plague Within", Mackintosh told U.K.'s Total Guitar magazine: "It could be a bit of a Marmite album. Sometimes it's nice to do albums that are expected, in a way, but for a career like ours, it's important to do certain records and songs where you try something else."A certain track, like 'Flesh From Bone', is probably the fastest song we've done tempo-wise," he revealed, "while 'Beneath Broken Earth' is quite possibly the slowest."We weren't shying away from any period," he continued. "But it also had to be cohesive."Greg added: "As it came together, the death metal elements became more prevalent, so the album ended up with more of those elements than we'd first anticipated. But it's got a good ebb and flow to it."We deliberately went down a different route, where we want it to sound like no one else in metal. Whether we've achieved that, I have no idea until everyone hears it."The cover for "The Plague Within" was created by Polish artist, illustrator and architect Zbigniew M. Bielak, best known in the musical realm for his record cover illustrations, which, among others, include meticulously handcrafted artworks of WATAIN, GHOST and ENTOMBED A.D. albums.

Album:

British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST performed with an orchestra on September 20, 2014 at the Roman theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. For the one-off concert, the band was joined by the renowned Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra founded nearly 70 years ago and made up of over 100 highly qualified musicians. The orchestra has its roots in the hundred-year-old orchestral tradition in Plovdiv and over the years has launched the careers of many world-famous conductors. The prestigious evening was promoted by the Bulgarian independent radio station Tangra Mega Rock and orchestrated by conductor Levon Manukyan who wrote the first metal ballet and is the founder of the Levon Manukyan Collegium Musicum orchestra. During his career, Levon has given the classical treatment to rock and metal works by MARILYN MANSON, ALICE COOPER, DREAM THEATER, AC/DC, EVANESCENCE, GUNS N' ROSES, KISS, LED ZEPPELIN, NIRVANA and JUDAS PRIEST, and worked with world-famous soloists including ex-NIGHTWISH vocalist Tarja Turunen. On November 20, PARADISE LOST will release "Symphony For The Lost" in two different formats: 2CD and DVD, as well as limited-edition 2LP + DVD (orange vinyl) with a 16-page booklet and signed postcard. Pre-orders can be placed at OMerch.eu.Said the band prior to the event: "We have recorded elements of orchestration many times in the studio over the last two decades, as many of our songs lend themselves well to classical arrangement. However, we have never before had the chance to play with a real orchestra in a live situation, so it's very exciting to have the opportunity to play with Plovdiv Philharmonic and in such a prestigious location as the Roman theatre."Bulgarian TV coverage, as well as fan-filmed video footage, of the performance can be seen below.

Bio

The British doom metal band Paradise Lost formed in Halifax, England in 1988; originally comprising vocalist Nick Holmes, lead guitarist Gregor Mackintosh, rhythm guitarist Aaron Aedy, bassist Steve Edmonson, and drummer Matthew Archer, the group recorded a pair of demo tapes, Drown in Darkness and Frozen Illusion, before signing with Peaceville Records to issue their debut album Lost Paradise in early 1990. The follow-up, 1991's Gothic, was the band's breakthrough, its dark production and orchestral elements setting them apart from the competition; a major European tour also expanded Paradise Lost's fanbase dramatically. Signing with the Music for Nations label, they returned in 1992 with Shades of God, considered by many to be their high-water mark; an EP, As I Die, appeared later that same year, complete with cover art by the incomparable Dave McKean. After 1993's Icon, Archer left Paradise Lost, and was replaced by drummer Lee Morris; Draconian Times followed in 1995, with One Second released two years later.

Album:

The album will be released on September 1 via Nuclear Blast. The artwork was created by Branca Studio and shows the infamous Gorgone Medusa from Greek mythology, carrying venomous snakes as hair and turning anyone into stone who would dare to look into her eyes.PARADISE LOST guitarist Greg Mackintosh states about the artwork: "Whilst we were writing 'Medusa' and realizing what the new songs were becoming, we had to find an artist to reflect this direction. After searching around for a while, I found Branca Studios. They have a keen eye for design and their modern take on retro artwork really fit the bill. What they have come up with is a blending of colorful-yet-retro styling, whilst maintaining the classic PARADISE LOST feel."About the choice to make her the figurehead of this new album, singer Nick Holmes adds: "I was intrigued about a greater meaning and thinking more along the lines of what Medusa represents metaphorically. 'Medusa' as a title works in many ways. From a nihilist perspective, when I read the description of 'Medusa' on the Wikipedia page: 'Attempts to avoid looking into Medusa's eyes represents avoiding the ostensibly depressing reality that the universe is meaningless.' The title was pretty much in the bag!"PARADISE LOST has announced a very special release show that will take place in Stuttgart at the iconic LKA Longhorn. Only on this night of September 1, PARADISE LOST will perform its entire new album. A short time later, PARADISE LOST will embark for an extensive European journey and bring their label mates and U.S. doomsters PALLBEARER, as well as SINISTRO from Portugal.Regarding the sound of "Medusa", Nick told Italy's Linea Rock: "I would say if you've ever heard every album by PARADISE LOST, it's closest to the 'Shades Of God' album, our third album. It's an album carrying on from that, but hopefully it's a lot more sophisticated and it's better produced and better played than that album." Gregor added: "Style-wise, it's more between 'Gothic' and 'Shades Of God' era, with modern touches to it as well."

Album:

Obsidian glass is characterized as hard, brittle, and amorphous; and as such, given to fracturing into sharp edges. Veteran doom dealers Paradise Lost’s powerful new record ‘Obsidian’ unquestionably lives up to its White Walker slaying namesake.Opening track “Darker Thoughts” serves as a lyrical and musical declaration of intent. Vocalist Nick Holmes’ gentle croon rides brittle acoustic guitar and atmospheric tension-building strings before the satisfying metallic salvo of the chorus, in which Holmes’ distinctive growl is offset by textured guitars. The song eventually winds down into a melodic in-service-of-the-song guitar solo by Gregor Mackintosh. Tuneful and efficient, the song is the first in a series of striking tunes on a somber record that is clearly focused on songcraft.Of all the tracks in the set, lead-off single “Fall from Grace” is the one that harkens back the most to the heavier style pursued on 2017s excellent ‘Medusa’. The twisting, melodic doom of the intro is offset by an angular, start-stop verse riff emphasized by Holmes’ plaintive snarl before the intro riff is re-purposed for a memorable chorus. The compact styling of “Ghosts” are a gentle reminder to upstart bands like Idle Hands that Paradise Lost were among the original purveyors of the profane marriage between buzz-saw bass driven ethereal goth and muscular riffing. A driving rhythm thick with toms serves as the skeletal backbone for Mackintosh and rhythm guitarist Aaron Aedy’s sparse atmospheric guitars and infectious echo-laden chorus leads. Holmes’ tale of chaos and eternal night is delivered via a wonderfully woeful sad bastard vocal turn.Elsewhere, the up-tempo “Serenity” finds ‘Draconian Times’ era heavy riffage clawing its way to the surface. The theatrical falsetto of the nihilistic “Hope Dies Young” is pure new wave bliss. “The Devil Embraced” is notable in the big rock gestures of the lead break, where Mackintosh’s timeless, wah-wah drenched solo rides drummer Waltteri Väyrynen and bassist Stephen Edmondson’s lumbering blood drunk breakdown. The rock classicism of the lead break is a trick employed throughout the set to tremendous effect. The vampiric majesty of final curtain call “Ravenghast” blows out the candle on full-length number sixteen with pitch black gusto. The brittle, eerie piano figure that haunts the mood-setting introduction is shattered by the funereal death doom that follows. Underpinned by Makinstosh’s stellar song elevating leads, the song builds to a crescendo before grinding down via a plaintive double-kick laden dirge-like coda.‘Obsidian’ finds Paradise Lost in peak melancholic form as they embrace the dark romanticism of their earlier gothic inspired work.

Album:

33 years after their inception, England’s Paradise Lost are not only one of the most influential metal bands in the world and founders of the gothic metal genre, but also among the most varied acts. From death and doom to catchy synth pop hymns, the quintet from Yorkshire never hesitated to cross boundaries and yet always stayed true to themselves.Following their first UK top 40 since the 90s, with their latest chef-d’oeuvre ‘Obsidian’, the band now unveils a live album consisting of 16 tracks that cover nearly every style and big hit from their 3-decade-long career.Captured at The Mill Nightclub, Bradford, near the band’s hometown in Yorkshire, England, the recording of the BluRay was directed by Ash Pears, who previously worked with the band on their music videos for ‘Medusa’ and ‘Obsidian’. Mixed by Les Smith and mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano, the audio version of the show will be available as vinyl and CD. ‘At The Mill’ is released 16th July via Nuclear Blast.Have you ever seen Paradise Lost live? I have and they’re awesome. No matter if they’re focusing on the heavier side of their music or the more accessible side. Paradise Lost always entertain and part of that comes from their willingness to challenge themselves. It hasn’t always worked but regardless, it has always won them new fans. Hell, their latest effort – the excellent Obsidian – showed that the band was still going as strong as ever.Of course, this live album features several tracks from that album and all of them brilliant. Fall from Grace, Ghosts and Darker Thoughts. Spread throughout the album, these new tracks fit so well amongst the legendary band’s back catalogue.Which brings us to the wander through the many different faces of Paradise Lost. There’s something for everyone here, the band taking us back to their early years with 1991’s Gothic for a run-through of the title track. As well as offering up tracks from 1993’s Icon, where the band took their first steps out of the gothic metal genre, they had been lumped in. Widow and Embers Fire are the two tracks from that album and sound as fresh today as they did back then.Sticking with 1993, it’s really cool to see to the band draw from their As I Die EP for an airing of the title track. Then, the band’s blend of gothic rock and traditional heavy metal saw their 1995 album, Draconian Times reach iconic status so it’s a bit of a surprise to just see one track from that album here. It is a quality one though as Paradise Lost play a blistering version of Shadowkings for grateful ears.1997’s One Second really annoyed a lot of fans back then but has since been acknowledged as a Paradise Lost classic. The switch to a more electronic and effects driven band was risky and polarising but the sales of said album should tell you all you need to know. Here we get the title track, which sounds so sinister while being so damn catchy. Whereas 1999’s even more controversial album, Host has So Much Is Lost get an airing. The harsher sound of 2007’s In Requiem is a high point as The Enemy and Requiem are the featured tracks here. Both still capable of putting a big smile on the face of those who love the gothic doomsters. It’s just one track from the 2009 album, Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us but it just so happens to be the excellent title track. Before 2015’s stunning The Plague Within Album sees No Hope in Sight and Beneath Broken Earth showcased, Two of my favourite Paradise Lost tracks off of my favourite Paradise Lost album. The last album to feature tracks is 2017’s Medusa and it’s Blood and Chaos. This really is a live album that can also be called a Paradise Lost best of. The albums that they don’t feature tend to be either the fans most disliked or the bands. Instead, the focus is on everything great about Paradise Lost while also showcasing the many different faces they have worn over the years. The track listing can’t be faulted. The sound can’t be faulted as it has that live feel but with top drawer production and the band’s abilities on these songs can be faulted. So, what can? Simple, the lack of crowd noise. Which is in no way the actual fault of the band. Such is the times we live in.At the Mill (Live) isn’t just for the fans. This could be the perfect entry point for those who have been meaning to, but got put off by the sheer number of releases and wide array of styles of Paradise Lost. No more, here it all is (mostly) in condensed form. A must listen.

Album:

Icon 30, a full re-recording of Icon, was released on 1 December 2023, on double vinyl with brand-new artwork, produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano. Vocals and drums were recorded in Arda Recorders in Porto, Portugal, while guitars and bass were recorded in Black Planet Studios, owned by guitarist Gregor Mackintosh. Vocalist Nick Holmes explained, "Our specific record deal around the time we signed for the Icon album meant we would never actually own the rights to our music or artwork, so going forward, to reissue the album ourselves for the 30th anniversary, it was necessary to re-record and completely re-do the album cover." The band will tour the UK in support of the album with My Dying Bride as special guests.....Icon is the fourth studio album by British heavy metal band Paradise Lost, released in 1993. It marked a departure from the death-doom sound of their early work, and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums. In February 2018, Icon was inducted into the Decibel Magazine Hall of Fame, becoming the second Paradise Lost album to be featured in the Decibel Hall of Fame (alongside Gothic), with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the gothic metal subgenre. In 2008, speaking to Kerrang! about the album's music, Nick Holmes remembered: "We were pretty much the first band to coin the phrase 'gothic metal' so I don't have a problem with that label. We've actually done gothier albums than Icon, but if people want to say that it sums up something that's fine with me. At the time there was also black metal, thrash metal and everyone wanted to describe what type of something was so we went 'Okay, we've got The Sisters of Mercy elements in our music, let's call it goth metal'. We were getting better as musicians as well and I was hopefully getting better as a vocalist. When that happens you want to fine-tune what you're doing. It's also about not wanting to get stuck or pigeonholed into one particular musical place. We've kept the whole gothic thing going right throughout our career, but we did want to do something a little different. With the vocals, a lot of it was kind of shouting in key as opposed to just shouting, it's okay singing like Beelzebub, but your voice can get into trouble if you have a big tour."
