Bio:

Formed in the year of 2006 in Curitiba/PR, the Brazilian band SEMBLANT has structured itself after a few line-up changes and it is considered nowadays as one of the most important bands of the Dark/Gothic Metal in the country, classified by the specialized media as one of the first bands of the “Vampiric Metal” in Brazil. Despite the characterizations, it is impossible to label the sound of the band, presenting an extremely heavy sound (lead by two 7-strings guitars and fast and precise drumming), besides the versatility on the vocals. With basis on their own identity and compositions, SEMBLANT has already been in five different Brazilian states promoting their songs and, continually, disseminating with extreme success their albums; the discography consists in the first EP “Behold the Real Semblant” (2006, independent), the websingle “Sleepless” (2009, Freemind Records), the album “Last Night of Mortality” (2010, Freemind Records), the EP “Behind the Mask” (2011, Neural Machine Records) and their latest album, “Lunar Manifesto” (2014, Shinigami Records). The “Behind The Mask” EP introduced to their audience, alongside the versatile male vocals from Sergio Mazul, the outstanding voice of the female singer Mizuho Lin, that, since then, is being regarded as one of the most respected Rock/Metal singers in Brazil. In 2014, Semblant released the result of the band’s development in the past two years, combining the evolution, maturity and versatility that the current line-up and its experience brought to the group in its 8 years of existence: “Lunar Manifesto”.Containing 11 tracks, the album, recorded in São Paulo/SP, was produced by Adair Daufembach, recognized by his work with bands like Hangar, Holiness, Project46, Command 6 and many others that are being responsible for bringing Brazilian Metal to a whole new level in terms of quality, production and sound. The general theme of the songs unfolds a dark vision, a nocturnal and “lunar manifest” about the modern civilization of mankind, that leads to a future that becomes more uncertain for its existence. All the visual concept for the new record was created by the renowned designer Carlos Fides, one of the biggest names in graphic and digital art for artists and bands from Brazil and the world, having previously worked with bands such as Evergrey, Keep Of Kalessin, Shaman, Noturnall, Nightmare and many others.

Album:

Album:

A rapidly rising act in the South American metal scene, Semblant are more than ready to take the world stage. The band have already received international praise from the metal community with the 2014 release of their second album ‘Lunar Manifesto’, the singles from which (‘What Lies Ahead’, ‘Dark Of the Day’ and ‘Incinerate’) have racked up over 30 million views on YouTube. They are now ready for the next phase of their career with the upcoming release of their highly anticipated new album, ‘Obscura’.Semblant formed in 2006 in Curitiba, Brazil when singer Sergio Mazul and keyboardist J. Augusto joined forces to create music that featured all the dark and aggressive elements they loved in metal music. The group eventually established a settled line-up with the addition of Mizuho Lin (female vocals), Juliano Ribeiro (guitar), Welyntom ‘Thor’ Sikora (drums) and Johann Piper (bass).States Mazul: “The last few years were really intense for the band. ‘Lunar Manifesto’ received a lot of attention for quite a while after it was first released and it was actually issued twice, independently at first, and then a second time with our previous label (and that meant we promoted it for longer than originally intended). Besides that, we faced some extremely difficult moments in our personal lives during the songwriting process of ‘Obscura’ and it definitely shows when you listen to it. We put our hearts into this record to help us deal with all the trouble we were facing during that time.” Guitarist Ribeiro adds: “‘Obscura’ is definitely a more mature record. We were really conscious of how we wanted it to be since the beginning of the process, so we took all the time we needed to make the album exactly how we wanted. It’s important to say that we’ve been together as a band for many years now and it also had a big impact on the end result of this record.” The first single from the album, ‘Mere Shadow’, features most of the band’s main characteristics: an awesome duet between Mazul and Lin, catchy melodies and chorus and heavy riffs. It is an excellent introduction to this new era of Semblant, so play it at an appropriate (LOUD) volume!

Album:

Their second for Frontiers, and fourth overall, "Vermillion Eclipse" sees the band continue their evolution into a powerful musical force that is hard to pin down with one musical categorization. With wide ranging influences under the metal and rock umbrella, Semblant are at once wholly unique and entirely familiar on "Vermillion Eclipse".There’s a thin line in metal music when using clean and gruff vocals. This seems to be particularly important in bands who employ female singers with male musicians who add the growls. It doesn’t always work and can overpower and distract from the overall delivery. Thankfully, this isn’t the case for Brazilian outfit SEMBLANT, whose album “Vermilion Eclipse” is their second release for Frontiers Music srl. It’s their fourth album overall for a band who have been together for over 15 years.“Vermilion Eclipse” brings 12 tracks which vary in style and delivery and apart from the grand finale “Day One Oblivion”, which we will get to later, the tracks are standard length, sharp and punchy with a crisp production that emphasises the vocals of both Mizuho Lin and co-singer Sérgio Mazul, as well as the solid musicianship that cements every track.SEMBLANTI read a couple of reviews of the band’s 2020 release “Obscura” which weren’t particularly complimentary, so there was a slight concern that this was going to be another bad release. It was pleasing to note that I didn’t find this the case, and for the most part, this was an album that was enjoyable. Much like Lacuna Coil, who are the obvious comparison when looking at the line-up and the delivery of dual vocalists, there are tracks that don’t gel as well as others. “Through The Denial” includes too many styles of singing in one song, with growls, cleans, roars and screams all raging over a maelstrom of riffs and soaring symphonic parts. It’s a bit intense on the aural stimulation with too much going on.The continuation of the “Legacy Of Blood” saga continues with the ferocity of “Black Sun Genesis (Part VI)” and “Bloodred Monarchy (Part VII)” which capture the attention as does the bombastic opening track “Enrage” that sees the band in full flight, rapid drumming and powerful guitar work ensuring that the album begins at lively pace, albeit a little cluttered, almost as if the band are trying to cram everything they can into the first minutes. Once it settles down, and Mazul’s gruff delivery is separated from Lin’s vocals, you can enjoy some excellent power metal with a symphonic edge thanks to the keyboards of founder J. Augusto. It’s a big entrance and sets a high bar.First single “Purified” showcases the band’s undoubted quality with a huge sound, Lin’s rising vocals contrasting with Mazul’s lower tones, although I think the harsh growls are unnecessary. Utilising a pause adds dramatically to the atmosphere and provides opportunity for guitarist Juliano Ribeiro to unleash a fiery solo. “The Human Eclipse” shows the band’s heavier side with a racing start and some blistering riffs, Augusto’s layered synth work adding texture. It’s one song where both vocalists are in total synchronicity and it shows, for this is one of the best songs on the album with Mazul’s strong baritone shining through.Having navigated 11 songs, it’s time to address the final song, the ten-minute epic “Day One Oblivion”. It begins with a gentle duet between Lin and the keyboards, delicate and ethereal before exploding into life with a massive burst of intense drums and riffs, over which the keyboards tinkle. Ferocious roars contrast with the melody and Lin’s performance is one of her best on the album. Her vocals aren’t as forced here as elsewhere, presenting naturally, whilst the balance with Mazul’s angry growls is better placed than on some other songs. As the song progresses, it’s possible to become really invested in it, absorbing the atmosphere as the song slows for a calm mid-section breakdown before building once more towards its dramatic crescendo. There is a lot going on in each song, at times to its detriment as it overpowers. When SEMBLANT get it right, then it works beautifully. There are still occasions when Lin’s vocals present as slightly forced and I don’t enjoy the multitude of different styles that Mazul brings to nearly every song. His cleans work well and it would have been good to hear a couple of songs where he dropped the growls. It’s a solid album rather than spectacular, but there is plenty within it to really enjoy.
