Bio:

DUST BOLT is a Thrash Metal Band, formed in Bavarian town Landsberg am Lech. The four young musicians (age in average 21) already started playing music together and playing shows very young and early and quickly gained attention. With another bandname they started playing regional shows at first, but were able to play as support act for highly known bands such as Sepultura, Hypocrisy oder Napalm Death very soon. In 2010 they released their first Demo Tape „Chaos Possession“ single-handedly and first time with the name DUST BOLT. Metal Hammer Germany described the Band as Top Newcomer Act in Metal music and Chaos Possession was titled as „Demotape of the month.“ The number of shows increased immediately and the band soon becomes a national known act, when DUST BOLT was able to play theier first European Tour with Six feet under and be the winner of WACKEN METAL BATTLE Germany, which made them playing at Wacken Open Air. The band decided to record their first Longplayer „Violent Demolition“, which finally made them signing a deal with Napalm Records. The debut gained major success and was sold over 5000 times so far worldwide and DUST BOLT was now known as top newcomer act in Thrash Metal in Germany and all over the world, also resulting from their extraordinary live performances. Napalm records also released the first two official music video for the tracks „Violent Abolition“ and „Toxic Attack“ and the band is able to play many club and festival shows in 2013, a Germany Tour with OBITUARY and a long European Tour with Bay Area band HEATHEN, which also made them a highly international known act. After being nominated for „best album 2012“ and „best newcomer“ at Metal Hammer Awards 2013 and another tour with Crossover band Dr.LIVING DEAD Lenny Breuss, Flo Dehn, Benedikt Münzel und Nico Remann went into the studio again, to record their second album „AWAKE THE RIOT“, which is going to be released 30.05.2014 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and 10.06.2014 in the rest of the world. The album will be promoted by Headliner-Shows in Germany, festivalshows and another planned European Tour.

Album:

The German whiz are back and raging brutal than ever before!"Awake the Riot" is a lesson in thrash metal and shows that Dust Bolt came the hero of the Bay Area already dangerously close. High Explosives Präzionsdrumming, furious leads and solos and amazing riffs are fired around the ears of the listener that a due whiplash is on the agenda at the latest after the first round."Awake the Riot" is aggressive riff bombardment, in which no stone is left unturned! Thrash Metal! Highly explosive and aggressive! Thrash 'em All!

Album:

If I was asked to name three things that I love about Dust Bolt’s music, my answer would be – the classic Bay Area Thrash vibe, the Slayer influenced guitar riffs, and the undeniable chemistry of a strapping young high school band. Formed in 2006, the thrashers from Germany released their debut album Violent Demolition in 2012 amidst a favorable response. They mesmerized their audience with a crisp thrash metal sound and loads of nostalgia, thanks to the unmistakable influence of the classic Bay Area Thrash Metal bands, most notably, Slayer. Two years hence, came Awake the Riot, a worthy successor of their debut that continued the thrashy riffs with the same fury and utmost precision. Come 8th of July, Dust Bolt will be back with their third full-length album titled Mass Confusion via Napalm Records.A third album in a band’s discography usually starts bearing the weight of expectations of the fans. And for the band, there is a conundrum to resolve; whether to experiment or to amplify their previous efforts. On Mass Confusion, Dust Bolt tries a bit of both.Right from the get-go, the band throws a curveball at your face with “Sick X Brain”. It is a never before seen crossover-thrash juggernaut that pounces on you with a frenetic thrashy riffage combined with angsty gang vocals that will truly surprise you. Lasting a little over a minute, the opener after its initial assault, quickly concludes with a groovy mid-tempo riff that warms you up for the rest of the album. It also leaves you slightly dumbstruck about how the rest of the album will unfold. However, what follows is classic Dust Bolt goodness with the album title track. “Mass Confusion”’s opening riff sounds a bit too similar to Slayer’s “World Painted Blood” but overall it has enough Dust Bolt elements to it that you will forgive them for employing such a generic, albeit groovy intro. Another aspect that you will notice on this track is Lenny Breuss’ vocal style. He employs a more punk-ish sounding vocals losing some of the edginess that we saw in their older records and using a slightly cleaner style of vocals, which also makes the compositions tilt a lot more towards Crossover Thrash/Hardcore than pure Thrash Metal.Although the band continues to throw in new elements in their compositions like the acoustic opening of “Allergy” or the acapella-ish intro of “Mind The Gap”, but they retain their original style soon after these initial moments. The seventh track “Exit”, however, will force you to double check your playlist once again to make sure it is indeed Dust Bolt that is playing or not. I am not sure what prompted the band to insert this modern rock ballad in between the mix, but surprisingly, it works! I found this track to be an emotional ride with some powerful moments, thanks to Breuss’ killer vocal talent, a crunchy rhythm section and a super melodic solo. Things return to normalcy after “Exit” as the band returns back to their older avatar and deliver some kickass Thrash Metal. However, the Slayer influence is a bit too much on this album. Several times on this album, I played the “Name that Slayer riff” game in my head. Having said that, I am not saying I did not enjoy it. Tracks like “Taking Your Last Breath” and “Portraits Of Decay” made me raise those horns up several times through its course but it is hard not keep out those comparisons or references from your head.True to the album’s name Mass Confusion does leave the listener confused about the record. One can’t complain that the band didn’t try to experiment or provide something new because some of the stuff they offer is entirely different from what we have seen them do. On the other hand, they also put in a lot of generic Thrash Metal elements that have been done countless times before. Then there is a new Hardcore punk direction the band showed us they are inclined to take. So, overall it is quite an unbalanced record but at the end of the day, does it all sound good? The answer to that is a resounding – Hell yeah!

Album:

#areyouprepared? is the hashtag German thrashers Dust Bolt have used on their website to announce their latest album due to come out in January 2019. With a career spanning over a decade these guys have been hammering out some heavy, hard-hitting old-school stuff ever since winning the German Metal Battle at Wacken Open Air and have given us some pretty brutal records like ‘Awake the Riot’, an album I had the pleasure of reviewing myself back in 2014. In an interview with Snoozecontrol in July ’18, frontman and guitarist Lenny Breuss talked about the direction of the new album and how this one is going to be the “most heavy one”. We’re here to discuss – ‘Trapped in Chaos’.First up, I like the artwork on this. It looks like the pupil of an eye and depending on how you view it, it’s either a hole in the earth, portal to an icy hell or the black-hole about to consume the cosmic. In whichever way interpreted it has a metaphoric meaning and somehow resonates perfectly with the musical content in it. Now having heard previous records from this group I can certainly say that while this album delves into a more melodic direction it does not necessarily soften up on its sound. It still has a very amped-up old school thrash sound providing plenty of sonic assault in songs like ‘Fourth Strike’ and ‘The Bad Ad’. Lenny and Flo provide a twin rhythm attack along with Nico’s quick paced drumming and plenty of bottom end from Benny on the bass. However, unlike their previous albums this record shifts gears back and forth on pace and introduces groove into the riffs giving them a heavy metal feel which can be predominantly heard in songs like ‘Dead Inside’.‘Bloody Rain’ exhibits this sound but in a darker and anarchized tone thus creating the essence of struggle, pain, and being trapped. Its not all doom and gloom though, the album switches tracks from the second half and introduces back the melody and has some addictively catchy choruses like those from ‘Rhythm to my Madness’ which would be my personal favourite. It flirts with some wah-wah, the primary riff gets stuck in your head and sounds like signature Dust Bolt. ‘Killing Time’ is a treat of old-school fans and is about as thrash as thrash metal can get. Solo’s are few and far in the album and are more harmonised, but when they come on, they are absolutely blistering and sound great. ‘Shed my skin’ and title track ‘trapped in chaos’ are great examples. The final song ‘Another day in chaos’ has a certain Metallica vibe to it and is the most melodic track in the album when compared to the rest. This album has a stronger fusion of groove elements and delves into more melody compared to its predecessors. Lenny has also introduced more melody into his voice and now does some solid singing in several tracks rather than just harsh vocals. He also shows off with some growling too. Lyrically its less propaganda and more human emotion and discusses issues involving sanity and overall tipping over the edge losing control, but before you subject it to criticism, this record’s core still keeps some old school balls to the wall thrash metal and represents a more evolved band. Its very rhythm guitar dominated too but not to the point where its an overkill. The rest of the elements come together just as well, have plenty of layers of intricacy and I will agree with the bands interview statement on point of this record being the heaviest work from them yet.‘Trapped in chaos’ delves into more melody compared to its predecessors yet successfully retains the raw aggression one would associate with the genre. It’s one of the heaviest records the band has produced yet, and secures their position among the primes of modern Teutonic thrash metal.

Album:

German outfit DUST BOLT have been making steady progression through the hotly contested ranks of thrash metal. It’s been a minute since they graced us with 2019’s Trapped In Chaos but 2024 is looking to be an exciting year for the band with a string of touring and festival appearances heading their way. In addition to this, they have now unveiled their fifth full-length effort entitled Sound & Fury via AFM Records – a release that is definitely going to divide opinion.Leave Nothing Behind kicks things off with an abundance of punchy grooves. Energetic drum beats and a simmering aggression get the momentum shifting. I Witness throws some addictive thrash riffing into the mix. The combination of heaviness and gritty melodic vocal tones proves to be a potent duo. I Am The One offers up the ideal opportunity for crowd participation. The stomping 80s style tempo will definitely get some fists pumping and heads banging.New Flame sprinkles some technical flair amongst the raunchy metal vibes whilst Burning Pieces is another certified anthem waiting to be unleashed to a hungry live audience, with plenty of memorable hooks to sink your teeth into. Title track Sound & Fury provides a surge of intensity with a mammoth opening riff before transitioning into emotive vocal passages and infectious, accessible melodies. Bluedeep keeps the upbeat energy flowing with buoyant instrumentation.Disco Nnection opts for a nostalgic heavy metal approach, big sounding riffs and a mainstream friendly demeanour. The lyrical delivery may make you cringe in places but it serves its purpose. You Make Me Feel (Nothing) introduces some dark, doom-ridden tones, linking up with the clean vocal stylings to great effect. Feel The Storm ebbs and flows between lighter and darker shades with a distinct catchiness rising to the surface. As we approach the closing stages Little Stone takes a particularly melancholic turn; solemn sentiments take the lead in this vocal-driven piece and it’s a slightly puzzling choice to depart on this note.Sound & Fury is the epitome of a ‘marmite’ album, you’ll either appreciate it or want to immediately erase it from your memory. It takes some serious courage to throw caution to the wind and just write what feels right. A lot of bands are scared to take that leap for fear of rejection. For this alone, DUST BOLT must be commended. It may not be groundbreaking or turn a sea of heads but it’s a solid outing and it will be intriguing to see where this newfound confidence with experimentation leads for the band going forward.
