Bio:

Forged in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Harlott are the finest example of the thrash metal genre in recent years. Taking most of their influence from the 80’s bay area thrash scene, they focus on high energy, up tempo music with lyrical influence from the human condition. Unrivaled live concerts, an aggressive recognizable sound and professional musicianship have earned Harlott a strong and dedicated fan base in the Melbourne metal scene, which still continues to grow to this day. Harlott will not only impress new audiences in and outside of the heavy metal genre, but they will also succeed in taking the fans back to the golden age of metal. In early December 2013, Harlott inked a record deal with Italian record label Punishment 18 Records.Punishment 18 are a metal label that deal exclusively with Thrash metal worldwide. For them to have scouted out and signed on Harlott with the eagerness and desire that they did is an honour.By being in partnership with Punishment 18, it will ensure record distribution of Origin throughout Europe and North America. Since its launch, Origin has receieved extremely positive reception from the Melbourne and Australian music community, as well as limited exposure overseas. With Punishment 18, Harlott will be able to share their hook-filled material worldwide.

Album:

Rarely do I hear Thrash Metal that comes close to the gems (both shining bright and in the rough) found in the 80's and early 90's, where I feel the genre was at a peak. However, in more recent times I have found evidence that there is a kind of resurgence in Thrash, in the form of newer bands such as SKELETONWITCH and TOXIC HOLOCAUST. Australian Thrashers HARLOTT are such an act, putting a modern twist on staying true to the classic sound of TESTAMENT and KREATOR and, in classic SLAYER fashion, have managed to fire off an album containing a wide array of tracks that all sound different, yet keep coherence as an album.Opener "Origin" has an exceedingly powerful intro with windmill-inducing riff work that switches up between chaotic thrashings, and deadly, ICED EARTH-esque passages, with equally-powerful screams. I was a little shocked halfway through to hear some riffs that reminded me of DEICIDE; a most welcomed addition. "Ballistic" is a much shorter track that manages to cram in many more musical ideas than the predecessor; at only just over 2 minutes long, it presents us with what feels (literally) the fastest drumming and guitar work on the record. To complement the expert musicianship, vicious guitar solos are spewed forth."Export Life" deserves particular attention; not just because of the tight, intellectual (in Thrash Metal?!) songwriting and the thoughtful attention paid to chord and melody progressions, but the uncharacteristically elegant guitar solo. It begins, flies through and ends with an incredibly powerful euro-Metal sound, which one would find in almost all Gothernberg Melodic Death bands. The final track, "Not Long for this World" stood out as my absolute favorite, alternating between aggression-fuelled riffs and more organized, groove-ridden passages with many catchy, melodic fills. Andy demonstrates his best vocal ability here, able to balance a powerful, Heavy Metal approach, with raucous Thrash vocals, and deeper timbres that shift deliciously close to Death Metal."Origin" is a modern Thrash masterpiece which will most definitely slither its way into regular listening; right up there with INVOCATOR and TOXIC HOLOCAUST.

Album:

Wearing their respect for ’80s thrash and its descendants on their cover art and band photos, Harlott spice up the nuclear madness of that era with some casual tech-ing of the style, adding a squeeze of modern death to the band’s palette. Finding time to smash about with experiments and playful moments (like the vibrating drum-roll of “Systematic Reduction” or the innumerable guitar squiggles between main runs), they also keep their vocals clear enough to draw listeners in, so that the side-bits serve as embellishment instead of distraction. At the same time, they might have been better served by holding listeners away for a few more songs before going in for the tight grab. Because of this, if you’re not in the mood for their high-octane thrash when you first put play the album, it won’t have much else to get your ears hooked. There are breaks of noodling and a few slow bridges, but all of their bets are on the deathly thrash being strong enough to do the job; admittedly, if you are in the mood for that, it works fairly well. Personally, I thought they could have done with a little less leaning on the steady-triggered drum-rolls, which show up so regularly as to lose any sense of special emphasis, while also distracting from the quality of the more organic drum-work, but the blasting carries on without too much trouble. It does Harlott credit that they maintain their chosen style with few lapses across the album, and while there’s some musical recycling going on over the 45 minutes of its duration, things are usually moving fast enough to brush that under the rug. Not spectacular, but decent enough for the band to earn some more fans with this release.

Album:

HARLOTT is a Thrash Metal band, born in 2006 and hailing from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. “Extinction” is the band’s third full-length album, and contains twelve tracks. Australia has really been a hot bed for all kinds of Metal lately, so anytime I hear of a band from there I usually am very pleased. Thrash Metal however often has unforgiving boundaries when it comes to purist fans, but I have always maintained that one can follow a tried-and-true genre and still put their own mark upon it. How did HARLOTT fair with their newest release? Let’s get to some of the highlights on the album. The opening title track, “Extinction,” is ultra-tight and scorches a path of fire in the earth as it moves along at a rapid pace. Vocally, there is an uncanny resemblance to Steve Souza from EXODUS. Some fans of that band do not like Souza’s voice, but I always did. In fact overall, it sounds a lot like early EXODUS. Yet, HARLOTT is tighter and more accomplished as a quartet in my opinion. “The Pentinent” is another strong track, showcasing the band’s transitional abilities, as they can jump around in rhythms and keys landing on a dime each time. This is truly a strength of the album and is quite impressive. “Whore” is an interesting track as well; three minutes of unadulterated hate and anger at a no doubt past relationship that did not end well. The bass guitar thumps heavily in “Conflict Revelation,” joined by a machine-gun riff and some outstanding drumming. When you talk about the word “unrelenting,” this song surely embodies that definition. “Violent Conspirator” is so fast it almost registers as Punk Music…played well of course. Under two-minutes, you barely have time to catch your breath as fists reign down on your head as if coming from an automated machine. Then there is “And Darkness Brings The Light.” This seven-minute plus track is something very unique from the rest of the album. It slows down enough to follow more of a melody, with vocals subdued just enough to separate it from some of the other songs. There is more room for a tale here, more theme. “Epitaph” closes the album, with a dark and evil fury.Musicianship is key to the success of this band. It is on full display on “Extinction,” and is quite impressive. They really know how to stick transitions and do not linger too long on any given passage, bringing some diversity to a genre where it is often lacking. Something is in the water in Australia for sure, because they are bringing us more new fabulous bands every year. I can’t imagine a fan of the genre who would not like this album.

Album:

Australia’s greatest thrash export, Harlott, is ready to unleash their fourth album to the world. To date, the band has leaned hard on a straight-forward thrash style that tends to replicate Slayer’s sound more than any of the other classic thrash bands. Their third album, “Extinction”, showed some slight experimentation in song lengths and the use of dissonance. “Detritus of the Final Age” picks up exactly where they left off. It does feel like there is slightly less speed overall on this outing, but the band slowing down at times is more akin to “South of Heaven”, where the changing tempos add variety rather than stifling the album’s progress.Fortunately, Harlott knows where they shine best, and so “As We Breach” kicks the album off with a furious pace. Beyond the typical thrashing, the song even has a brief black metal section towards the end, with blastbeats and tremolo picking aplenty. The rest of the song intertwines gallops with speedy downpicking. Harlott is wiser than to leave the coolest song first, though; the very next track, “Idol Minded”, is even faster! This is definitely the most aggressive song on the record, and much like songs such as “Ballistic” and “Violent Conspirator” before it, the quick thrashing is a major highlight for the album. “Prime Evil” is another one that, at times, challenges the limits of the picking hand.Playing these lightning-quick riffs can tend to get muddy under weaker productions, but “Detritus of the Final Age” is exactly how a thrash album should sound. It has a crystal-clear guitar sound that makes each riff perfectly discernable. Almost as if by magic, the guitars get heavier and more crushing in the slower moments. “Bring On The War” is the band’s attempt at bashing your skull in with a mid-paced tune, and though it definitely might turn some off who would prefer a purer thrash sound, it helps show some progression in Harlott’s sound. There are some harmonies in the later part of the track that would make Metallica proud, and the song does eventually explode in the second half. The Metallica comparisons don’t end there. One of the lengthier songs, “Nemesis”, also has some melodic sections that recall more laid-back instrumentals like “Orion” or “To Live Is To Die”. One glance at the track-list suggests that the album might be a bit of a roller-coaster with all of the different song lengths, but truthfully, there are no weak links. The song structures tend to be more intricate than what the band has done in the past, even in instances where there are obvious choruses. The most puzzling aspect of Harlott at this point is why they aren’t bigger. With the backing of Metal Blade, and the quality to match any of their peers, hopefully this is the album to catapult Harlott to new heights. “Detritus of the Final Age” contains everything that makes thrash metal great. Whether you like blistering solos, angry vocals, top-tier musicianship, or even some melody, this album has it all, so it’s time to get on board if you’ve been missing out!
