Bio:

Denmark’s Artillery is easily appointed one of Europe’s earliest exponents of thrash metal, and the band’s contribution to the bourgeoning genre is difficult to ignore. The Danish quartet successfully managed to fuse an abrasive brutality with technicality and strong melodies, with the noteworthy guitar leads of the Stützer-brothers as well as the remarkable vocals from Flemming Rønsdorf serving as highlights.Due to Artillery’s demos being well distributed, the band gained worldwide recognition even before the release of their first official album; and band’s studio albums all assume a position as classics in the thrash genre. However, due to lack of support from labels and internal band disputes, Artillery never really achieved their big breakthrough.Artillery was formed in the Copenhagen suburb of Taastrup, Denmark in early 1982 by lead-guitarist Jørgen Sandau [former roadie of Mercyful Fate] and drummer Carsten N. Nielsen [ex The Mortuary] who joined forces with vocalist Per Willem Onink, lead-guitarist Michael Stützer [ex Silvercross/Unicorn/Voodoo/Devil’s Symphony] and bassist Morten Stützer [ex Unicorn/Voodoo/Devil’s Symphony].In December 1982, the band cut the 4-track demo We Are the Dead and subsequently performed a few local gigs. The music was at time cut from a traditional metal template, quite similar to the one of Mercyful Fate. However, around June 1983 Onink was asked to leave as Artillery was searching for a vocalist with a different type of voice, and around September 1983 Artillery duly employed vocalist Carsten Lohmann [ex Bang Blues Band]. At this time the music had turned much more raw and abrasive, purveying the direction which would later be entitled thrash metal. In July 1984, Artillery entered Ole Erlings Lydstudio in order to record the 4-track demo Shellshock – and the final product was released in August, and in October 1984 the band recorded four new tracks for the demo Deeds of Darkness in the same studio. Things didn’t work out with Lohmann, though, and Artillery began searching for a new frontman. The band in fact tried their luck with a female and two other guys; among them were Mickey Finn, who would later play an important role in the band’s history.Artillery eventually found the perfect member in Flemming Rønsdorf whose raunchy vocals provided the band with the right identity. Around this time, Sandau decided to assume a position as rhythm-guitarist, leaving it up to Michael to handle all leads. In January 1985, Artillery entered the El Sound Studio, Copenhagen, Denmark and cut the demo Fear of Tomorrow with producer Freddie Wolf. The product was released in March. The band was likewise featured on the Speed Metal Hell compilation album with the song “Hey Woman” from that demo.In May-July 1985, Artillery returned to the El Sound Studio, Copenhagen, Denmark, and this time with producers Nis Bogvad and Lars O. Christiansen, and the band subsequently recorded Fear of Tomorrow. Out on Neat Records, the album was met with rave reviews. That summer, Artillery headlined a successful tour in Belgium and Holland and even played at the famed Dynamo Festival in Eindhoven, before indulging themselves in support slots for Slayer and King Diamond in the end of the year.In September-October 1986, Artillery recorded Terror Squad [again in El Sound Studio], but the album was delayed beyond reason, and frustration within the band grew when tour offers, among others with Exodus, were turned down since the album wasn’t released. Carsten N. Nielsen eventually lost faith in the band that played with drummer Henrik Quaade for three weeks. The increased tension, unfortunately, led to the split-up up of Artillery, and Morten Stützer and Quaade subsequently formed Furious Trauma. Michael Stützer formed Missing Link. In 1987, Neat finally released Terror Squad, and the album yielded critical acclaim. In 1988, Artillery was offered to play at the Next Stop Soviet programme, being one of the first outside rock acts to perform in the Soviet Union, alongside fellow Danes Sort Sol. Consequently, Rönsdorf, the Stützer-brothers, Sandau and Nielsen began rehearsing for this task by playing live in their native Denmark but following a show in October Sandau decided to take his leave, for what reason Morten Stützer switched to the lead-guitar – the band was assisted for these slots by session-bassist Peter Thorslund [ex Apocalypse/Force Majeure]. Artillery performed five sold-out Russian gigs, but over-enthusiastic fans incited a vicious backlash from security forces and Artillery was properly banished as being a decadent influence. In May 1989 Artillery employed bassist Michael ‘Romchael’ Rasmussen [ex Hatred] who was however by August given the red card due to his lack of enthusiasm. Thorslund subsequently became the new member of Artillery, while Rasmussen joined Furious Trauma. Later that year, the quartet entered Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen with producer Flemming Rasmussen [of Metallica fame] and recorded the 2-track demo Khomaniac. In January/February 1990, Artillery recorded By Inheritance with Flemming Rasmussen in Sweet Silence. Out on Roadracer Records, the album yielded much attention from the press as well as fans of the genre. However, the release of the album lacked substantial support from the label, hence little touring and in August Michael Stützer left Artillery, reactivating Missing Link. Artillery thus continued with only one guitar player in the shape of Morten Stützer. In September Rønsdorf likewise left Artillery to be replaced by John Mathiasen [ex Avalon]. In December Carsten N. Nielsen bowed out of Artillery as well, and the band thus contiued with guitarist Samir Belmaati [ex Furious Trauma] and drummer Henrik Quaade. In June 1991, the band played a second time on the Roskilde Festival. In the end of 1991, Artillery cut the 4-track demo Mind Factory, which was never released. Benny Dallschmidt then replaced Quaade in the band.In 1992, Mathiasen was substituted with Mickey Finn of the early audition, but the band eventually split up, and Morten Stützer, having his hands free, joined his brother Michael in Missing Link.In 1998, the Danish label Mighty Music released the compilation Deadly Relics, which contained the band’s demos, except We Are the Dead. At the same time, the Stützer-brothers and Rönsdorf reactivated Artillery as the musicians performed a show at a venue in Copenhagen with help from Peter Thorslund and drummer Sven Olsen [from Missing Link]. Support came courtesy of 4Q, featuring Jørgen Sandau and Carsten N. Nielsen. Artillery then chose to continue as a trio.In July/August 1999, Artillery signed with Danish label Diehard Music; entering Starstruck Studio, the band recorded the Bo Lund-produced B.A.C.K. with former Invocator-drummer Per M. Jensen [ex Geronimo/Extreme Feedback]. Morten Stützer also took care of the bass. In August 1999, Artillery played at Wacken Open Air, Germany with help from Peter Thorslund and Per M. Jensen. In November 2004, Artillery performed another local show with assistance from HateSphere’s rhythm section, bass player Mikael Ehlert [ex Human Erupt] and drummer Anders Gyldenøhr [ex Pixie Killers/Grope].In 2007, Metal Mind Productions issued the 4-CD box set Through the Years, including all four studio albums as well as demo material and rare leftovers. Limited to 2000 hand numbered copies, the albums were remastered on gold discs. In late 2007, Michael and Morten Stützer reunited with Peter Thorslund and Carsten N. Nielsen, and since Flemming Rönsdorf remained uninterested in putting his strength into the band, Artillery finally recruited Søren ‘Nico’ Adamsen [ex Starrats/Crystal Eyes/Maladaptive/Twinspirits]. In 2008, the band began performing both national and international gigs, playing material from past albums. On March 8th, 2008, Artillery recorded the live CD/DVD One Foot in the Grave, The Other One in the Trash at the MetalMania Festival in Katowice, Poland for Metal Mind Productions. Not long after that Artillery began playing new tracks live and announced their plans to record a new studio album. In March/April 2009, Artillery recorded 13 tracks for the album When Death Comes at Medley Studios with producer Søren Andersen. The album was released on Metal Mind Productions in June.2011 now sees the release of their latest efforts, titled My Blood, released in March. The band are hitting the road throughout the year to melt faces and wreck some necks as one might expect from these Danish Thrash legends. After touring in the US and South America Josua Madsen replaced former drummer Carsten Nielsen.

Album:

Legions is the seventh studio album by Danish thrash metal band Artillery, released on 26 November 2013 on Metal Blade Records. It is the first Artillery album to feature vocalist Michael Bastholm Dahl and drummer Josua Madsen. It is said that history can repeat itself. Honestly I believe in that notion, especially in the music business where an artist can head back to his origins, the small space where he started to craft his first tunes, his old major musical trend. It has nothing to do with modesty or refuge, just a comeback to the spot where everything was perceived with unavoidable admiration. However, sometimes when there is that awful craving to search for new ways to perfect one’s music or go beyond the common ground, things get muddy and usually causing the artist to stir so far from his path that his creation no longer matters. In my opinion it happened to METALLICA after 1989, then to SEPULTURA after 1994 and to BON JOVI after 1994, whether becoming the audience’s whore or plainly taking on a new form that turned out sour. The case of the longtime Danish Thrash Metal band ARTILLERY did reveal shifts and twists along their career, crossing from a mere technical Thrash Metal group to a renowned diverse being between Heavy and Thrash outputs. Though not being that welcomed, as nothing of their new material can’t upscale “Fear Of Tomorrow”, “Terror Squad” or the colossus pounder “By Inheritance”, at least in comparison to the artists I mentioned, their alternations didn’t torn them asunder. In my bill, ARTILLERY, following their comeback in 2007, were able to produce more than decent offerings of considerable quality. Gradually the band began to stray their stimulating depicted Thrash input into broadly merging classic Heavy Metal insertions that before. On the other hand, have no fear as ARTILLERY’s past is still their main emblem to trail. “When Death Comes” and “My Blood” appeared to me as impressive foundations, securing the band’s legacy, even if not in its complete form. With the introduction of “Legions”, via the band’s new album Metal Blade Records, following the inauguration of a new vocalist (Michael Bastholm Dahl) and drummer (Josua Madsen), the former being a prospect from the local Danish Heavy Metal band RIPE, I believe that ARTILLERY made another step towards their early 90’s phenomenon. On “Legions” the classy duo of experienced Thrashers, the Stutzer brothers, still behind the songwriting, substantiated that even with age ARTILLERY’s music is stronger and fiercer than ever, igniting the fires of the late 80’s while countersigning the modernized sound of the present at their side that might have just partially delivered their old might, but satisfied. The album’s riffery is as always creative and exceptional, sometimes a reprise of the early days of the band, yet that is what I have been looking for, the older signatures, past aggression initialized at will. However, the Stutzer duo also knew how to compose songs of utter passion and with a measure of severity and chastity. Take for example the album’s foremost track “Enslaved To The Nether”, which I crown as ARTILLERY’s freshened “Don’t Believe”. This song is a masterpiece, a Heavy Metal with bits of Thrash kind of track, enhanced with a spectacular vibe glazed by acoustic guitaring, a conventional build up through distorted lands of simplified riffery that later incubated into definitive heavy weight crusher. You can’t go wrong with this kind of soon to be classic. Nevertheless, listening to the title track, “Legions”, reserved my admiration for the enchanting Arabian style scales that the band has been using for quite some time. Basically, this one is a slider between Heavy and Thrash Metal, harbors addictive riffery and a crude rhythm section. Bastholm Dahl, with this number, but not just by it, proved himself to be a worthy replacement to Soren Adamsen, portraying a zealous voice with an impressive range. The closer of this chapter, ”Ethos of Wrath”, inflames with a Thrash consumed tug of war, well developed track leading from slicing riffery to a decisive simple chorus displaying a heck of vocal presentation. Following a destructive solos, and remarkable harmonies, how can one deny this one from glory? Enough instances for you guys to take on this release, feast on its flesh and devour its music enough to worship these guys’ efforts. ARTILLERY are back in the saddle with a lineup that I hope that will hold.

Album:

When you imagine top notch thrash metal, who do you imagine? Metallica? Slayer? Some band out of Brazil or Greece we’ve never heard of? All excellent answers! There’s so much to be heard that it’s a tragedy that so much goes unnoticed, and no band is so criminally unknown than that of Artillery. They’ve been going ever since before “Master of Puppets” was put out, so they’ve had a shit ton of time to really get their sound to where they want it and make something fucking ridiculous out of their already great formula. And the end result this time happens to be their upcoming album “Penalty by Perception” which is unequivocally one of if not the best thrash metal album to have come out in too many years. From the capturing vocals, catchy riffs followed by mouth watering guitar solos, a bass that knows how to bring an amazing feel, and drums that sound like lightning incarnate, Artillery have created a true masterpiece of thrash metal that any fan of the genre will be jamming out to by the half way mark of the first track because this band has perfected their musical formula and have finally created an album that could be their big breakthrough as a band that to me is terribly underrated and could be a part of a Second Big Four. Eleven tracks and over 50 minutes of shredding guitar and a metal as fuck sound are all included within “Penalty by Perception” so when this record comes out you better make yourself comfortable with your favorite pair of headphones because you will be thrown into a grand experience that you will not want to end even after you’ve played the album over and over again. Artillery also show off their musicianship with incorporating other instruments such as an acoustic guitar and piano that not only sound magnificent but blend in so well with the thrash that it’s uncanny and I cannot help but applaud at how Artillery is able to do such a feat that many bands attempt and fail constantly. All in all, this is without a doubt in my mind one of the best albums that 2016 will give us by the time it drops because it is so well done and masterfully executed that no one included me can deny it’s awesomeness. A true marvel of modern metal that sounds faintly old school but packed with much of the new school, “Penalty by Perception” can easily be Artillery’s best album to date and the one that truly puts them on the map of the metal world as they’ve deserved to be for decades.

Album:

Artillery is perhaps one of the most iconic and reliable thrash metal bands out there, and definitely one of Denmark’s finest. Their three first records rank among the best of all time in the genre for me and a LOT of people – my favorite being ‘By Inheritance’ (1990), which I put easily in my top 10 thrash albums – and since their second comeback in 2007, guitarist brothers Morten and Michael Stützer and company have been putting out full lengths on a steady basis. ‘The Face of Fear’, fifth effort since that comeback and third one with Michael Bastholm Dahl on vocals, continues to trumpet and spread the word about the band’s rich history by mixing old with new.‘The Face of Fear’ continues where the good ‘Penalty by Perception’ (2016) ended in terms of songwriting and atmosphere, which comprises of intertwining elements of the traditional euro thrash metal scene and some of their particular tricks with large chunks of the bay-area style of playing, especially when it comes to pace and riff selection. The classic Artillery side comes out to play right away as the title track starts. “The Face of Fear” is fast, prolific and heavy enough to remind us of the band’s heydays. One of the best tracks here.“Crossroads to Conspiracy” continues the onslaught and surfaces the Yankee thrash metal style of play that Artillery often borrows from, as the flow of the song and the defying nature of the performance have many similarities to the more direct approach seen in the American thrash vein. This can be noticed unmistakably and more prominently in “Sworn Utopia”, which showcases some Mustaine-esque riffs and especially vocal lines, courtesy of a loose and less-aggressive Dahl, especially in the chorus. It features an awesome verse and bridge, but the chorus is actually a little less impactful and more mechanical.Songs like “New Rage” and “Through the Ages of Atrocity” are somewhat different than the other punchy, faster track. The pair is heavier, more cadenced and Peter Thorslund’s bass lines have an outstanding role here, kind of what D.D. Verni is used to do with Overkill. And as nothing is ever perfect, strange choices and uninspired sections unfortunately are also present. “Thirst for the Worst” is just passable. Weird and melodic, has some cool riffs and leads, but is a little different from what Artillery commonly delivers. The weakest point of the album, though, is when the duo “Pain” and “Under Water” comes in. The movement of Americanizing the band’s sound feels a little bit like a marketing move rather than a natural course in songwriting. “Pain” is not bad, but this pasteurizing of music can be a little far-fetched. The sense of brutality and even some power metal elements added to Artillery throughout the years are somewhat neutered to fit this formula, and “Under Water” is just a filler instrumental song with nothing to add, at the end of the day. While the most fragile portion of the record is the final one, it’s also where the awesome “Preaching to the Converted” is. It’s powerful and visceral and has marvelous drum work and crushing riffs. It is by far the song that best suits the overall instrumental in Artillery’s new era alongside the title track, and definitely the tune with the best solo.Ending the album is a couple of rerecorded versions of previously released tracks, “Mind of No Return” and “Doctor Evil”. The former is a less organic and more melodic version of the track from the 1982 demo ‘We Are the Dead’. It fails to grasp the power and relevancy of the original, but it’s a nice addition to the fans, nevertheless. “Doctor Evil”, though, is completely skippable, as the original song is just 5 years old (originally released in the 2013 album ‘Legions’) and not a great one to begin with; I really don’t get why they rerecorded this. The addition of two young bloods in Josua Madsen (drums) and Michael Bastholm Dahl works wonders since 2012. Visceral riffs and Dahls’ performance compensate for the not so great production and some small mishaps when combining old, tried and true European thrash elements with some American modernity, but a legendary act like Artillery kicks the shit out of that without problems. All in all, the Stützer brothers deliver a good effort once again in ‘The Face of Fear’, with some really strong moments and catchy songwriting. While it won’t touch the band’s best moments, its firepower is strong enough to earn it a respectable place in such a legendary career; recommended.

Album:

It’s hard to predict how good an artist will be during these highly unpredictable, pandemic times, but X by Artillery is top notch, in fact it’s the best melodic thrash / power metal record of 2021. It drops May 7 via Metal Blade Records. The best way to describe X is pure heavy metal, elevated beyond what I’ve come to expect from this genre in the past. I think the following quote will shed more light on this: Says guitarist Michael Stützer: “We wanted to have the typical Artillery trademarks, like the riffs and hook lines in the usual combination together with aggression and melody. We always try to combine melodic thrash metal with elements from the heavy sounds of the 70s and the 80s, and this time with new elements in some of the songs.”Quite frankly when I think of thrash, bands like Slayer, Overkill and Sodom come to mind. Be forewarned, if you’re looking for breakdown mosh beats and sonic brutality, you won’t find that here. Instead, Artillery have matured into the beast that we hear on X that has more in common with 90’s era Anthrax, Armored Saint and Bullet than the aforementioned bands. And that, precisely, is why this album works as well as it does.Artillery have masterfully woven together speed, aggression and melody in a manner that allows them to reach out and be expansive creatively without limitation, genre wise. X is pure steel that’s better parts melodic-thrash and power metal. In terms of how good this record is, the only song out of 11 I didn’t like was “Varg I Veum”strictly because I couldn’t connect with it lyrically. “In Your Mind,” “Force Of Indifference” and “Turn Up The Rage” are solid bangers.X is hooky, catchy, and a perfect example of what fist pumping metal should be. Throw those horns and buy this record. Artillery’s X has my vote for best melodic-thrash record of 2021.

The band are hitting the road throughout the year to melt faces and wreck some necks as one might expect from these Danish Thrash legends. After touring in the US and South America Josua Madsen replaced former drummer Carsten Nielsen.Well line-up changes happen, especially if you’re a 41-year-old band.Like a marriage, people part, and so does bandmembers. Kræn Meier and Artillery recently parted ways.New singer is a long-time friend of the band, Martin Steene.Martin has been a big part of the Danish metal scene, for many years. He made his recording debut with the band Iron Fire in 2000.He has released 9 albums+ 1 compilation/Best of, with Iron Fire.He was a touring member of the band Saturnus for two years as rhythm guitarist.Martin also played in a legendary Danish band called Evil, a speed metal band. In 2023 Evil released an album called Book of Evil. From 2003-2005 Martin was in a band called Force of Evil. The band members were Michael Denner, Hank Shermann, Hal Patino and Bjarne Holm….Whoa, wait a minute, that’s almost a full Mercyful Fate and King Diamond line-up.Martins vocal range is amazing, ranging from classic metal, melodic metal and thrash metal. So, Martin is ready to turn out for Artillery in 2024. Tour coming up, shows already booked, more to come, and were happy that Martin will join Artillery. There will be Metal.

Album:

Raw Live (At Copenhell) out on Mighty Music the 2nd of February 2024.Official live album by the biggest thrash band out of Denmark and one of the most well-known bands in the world in the genre - Artillery. This is the last recording with drummer Josua Madsen, who passed away tragically the following year. The album is a homage to Josua. Album mixed and mastered by Soren Andersen Music (Glenn Hughes, Electric Guitars) at Medley Studios.ARTILLERY is not a band of many live albums, In fact, in over four decades, they have put out just one. Until now. So, when it’s bound to happen, it should be special.Enter “Raw Live (At Copenhell)”. Recorded in 2022, just coming out of pandemics lockout, in one of the biggest metal festivals in their home country (and among the biggest metal festivals in Europe!), the live set by the Danes was impeccable. Sadly, it was also one of the last live appearances by drummer Josua Madsen, who was killed the next year in a car accident. It also marks a turning point for the veteran thrashers, who recently said goodbye to vocalist Michael Bastholm Dahl and guitar player Kraen Meier and are looking forward to an exciting new era ahead. But, for now, let’s bow before Josua’s monster performance at Copenhell in 2022 and hear it from Artillery’s guitar player and founder Michael Stützer about the release. “The year was 2022, we got the offer to play at one of the world’s absolutely coolest metal festivals: Copenhell. Everything had been destroyed by COVID-19 in the years before. So, 2022 was the year we got busy.Big festivals contacted us, German TV and so on. Rockhard, Sweden Rock, Brutal Assault and Copenhell.Copenhell was big for us. To share the stage with bands like KISS, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, it hardly gets bigger. We sat down and decided to get the concert recorded, it had to be as raw as possible, authentic as hell and the hope was to be able to use the tracks as bonuses for future releases. Maybe as a live release. When we received the recording, we thought that the recording should be released as a concert, not as bonus tracks. Søren Andersen, our permanent producer, was put on the case. Sound levels had to be fixed a bit, but that was it. Søren said at one point, “Damn, Josh is ON FIRE!”. And he was! Denmark’s biggest music magazine Gaffa gave the concert 5/6 stars and the headline was “The man is busy”. Josh played better than ever. Josua was killed in a car accident in 2023. Now the album is released, a little late, yes, but it’s a recording, which is as it should be when talking about Artillery. Raw, unpolished, straight in your face. Hence the name of the live record: “Raw Live (At Copenhell)”.Artillery has been around for more than 40 years. The final chapter has not been written yet; just wait, there is more to Artillery. For example, a Metalized tour with friends from Manticora and new singer Martin Steene, known from Iron Fire and Force of Evil, as well as a larger USA tour. The album is a tribute to Josh, as well as a clenched fist in the air to our fans. Thanks Satan. Thanks to Mighty Music.”
