Bio:

Exumer is an early German thrash metal band with close ties to Angel Dust.In 1985, vocalist and bass player, Mem V. Stein decided to form a thrash metal band that embraced the sounds of all his favorite bands from the thrash metal genre at the time.He met guitarist Ray Mensch at a Slayer show and they started writing music together. Shortly after, they were joined by Syke Bornetto on drums and Bernie Siedler as a second guitarist and Exumer was born.In late December of 1985,Exumer released their first demo "A mortal in black". Despite mixed reviews the demo sold out quickly. The band asked Matthias Prill (Venom’s Legions) to manage them and they were soon signed to Disaster Records. This cooperation led to booking time with Harris Johns at the Music Lab studios in Berlin, spewing out the band's cult classic thrash whirlwind, "Possessed by Fire" LP. After the recording the album and before its release, Exumer's founding father Mem left the band. Long time friend and initial second guitarist for Exumer, Paul Arakaki joined as new vocalist and the band embarked on their first German tour supporting Suicidal Tendencies. The band recorded the second output in 1987; "Rising from the Sea." They went on tour again in 1988, this time promoting the now infamous European tour package with NASTY SAVAGE and ATOMKRAFT. Disgruntled by the demanding recording and touring schedule, Paul played his final show with the band with SEPULTURA opening up for Exumer in São Paulo. There, the band was embraced by thousands of thrash metal maniacs but Paul had made up his mind.Exumer found themselves without a singer for the second time, some heavy financial problems and internal turmoil which led the band to split in 1991. In 2001, Mem, Ray and Bernie reunited for a final show at the Wacken festival in Germany as a "thank you" to the fans. An influx of steady fan mail reached Mem on a regular basis after the Wacken show and finally in 2008, Mem, Paul and Ray began talking about reforming Exumer. In 2009 the thrash metal legend Exumer returned with Mem Von Stein - Vocals, Paul Arakari – Guitar/Vocals, Ray Mensch – Guitar, T. Schiavo - Bass and J.P. Rapp – Drums. The band focused on recording a 2-track demo (Waking the Fire) and touring in Europe, playing live in the USA for the first time as part of their “5 Nights of Fire Tour”. During the tour, Exumer appeared on the Keep It True festival in Germany, in Athens/Greece and in Los Angeles at the Thrasho de Mayo festival, which they headlined in front of over 1200 fans.Exumer returned to Europe in spring of 2010, during their “European Ignition Tour” to play at the prestigious Inferno festival in Oslo/Norway and other important festivals like the first edition of the Metropole Ruhr festival in Germany and other important stops in Bulgaria and Italy. Mem and Ray decided to ask drummer Matthias Kassner and guitarist H. K. to join Exumer permanently after they had proved themselves during the first leg of the “European Ignition Tour”, as excellent choices to replace session-drummer J.P. Rapp and guitarist/vocalist Paul Arakaki.Paul, once again, had decided to leave Exumer but this time for good, due to the intense travel requirements from his native Hawaii. Exumer will return to Europe in fall of 2010, to complete their “European Ignition Tour”. Recently the Band signed to the mighty Metal Blade records to release their 1st studio album in 25 years and the 3rd in their career. Fire and Damnation will be available worldwide in April 2012!

Album:

From the name (why can’t thrash bands ever spell?) and the logo it’s clear exactly what Exumer being to the party. And that’s even before listening to a note of “The Raging Tides”.But just in case you still aren’t sure, along comes these four lines on “Catatonic” – which might be the best summing up of thrash ever: “Sticks and stones,” shouts Mem V Stein (calling it singing would be a stretch – this isn’t about melody and tone) “won’t break some bones/so you will have to fight”. This is followed a little later in the song with this little reprise: “Sticks and stones won’t break our bones/it’s you who has to die.”And that, essentially, is the ethos of “The Raging Tides” in a nutshell. Stein and guitarist Ray Mensch have been present throughout all the incarnations of the band (who were originally formed in the mid 1980s, and split up for over 20 years before returning for 2012’s “Fire And Damnation”) and you can bet your life that “….Tides” is exactly the sound they they have dreamed of in all that time.Because those concepts of experimenting with a sound and exploring other avenues are not for Exumer. Rather the 12 – if we include the bonus tracks here – cuts that make up the bands fourth record are nothing more and nothing less than a study in classic thrash. It’s angry, it’s violent and it’s got it’s fists in the air and thankfully not a guttural vocal in earshot. Frankly anyone that has ever liked thrash metal will find something to enjoy here. Solos are fired out at breakneck speed, the lyrics deal with death, fire – and occasionally, as on “There Will Always Be Blood” it happily includes an appearance from Beelzebub too. From its opening title track right through, there’s no let up in pace, or indeed quality. This is just a magnificent piece of glorious, and gloriously pure, thrash metal. There are some standout moments of course, not least “Dark Reflections” – which has echoes of Slayer – while “Brand Of Evil” which is heads down and horns up charger, are quite superb.Even the bonus tracks could have been worthy additions. “Forever My Queen”, very much the pick, might only be short, but packs a mighty punch. It might be that this more groove orientated sound is a plan for album number five. Then again, the other one of the pair “Hostage To Heaven” positively drips with evil, so probably not. There’s nothing original about “The Raging Tides” but there’s no reason to care about that. It’s a marvellous thrash metal record, and that is all it was ever supposed to be.

Album:

There is something about thrash metal that taps into the vital essence of life. The knife-sharp riffs and roiling rhythms drill into our primordial brains. Thrash lets our raging souls run wild. On Exumer’s new album called Hostile Defiance, they exude the savage heart of thrash metal.Founded by Mem V. Stein (vocals) and Ray Mensh (guitar), Exumer includes T. Schiavo (bass), Matthias K. (drums) and Marc B (guitars). The band got their start back in 1985 as thrash was being born. After more than twenty years on hiatus, Exumer slammed back into action with their 2012 comeback album Fire & Damnation and the furious metal feast on The Raging Tides in 2016.The new Hostile Defiance album strikes quickly and deadly with the opening title track. V. Stein’s percussive vocal delivery reminds me of Steve Souza of Exodus. Bursts of vocal barrage tightly coupled with the attack of the song as a whole. The lyrics “We are mean and hostile, defiant to the end” are a bit cliché, but it doesn’t matter. This jackhammer of a song makes you want to get up and get crazy. Each song on Hostile Defiance is piercing and explosive. The drumming of Mattias K. is crushing on each song. They provide a solid foundation for the guitars to mount a frontal assault. The guitars sound feral with a vicious bite. The mix and tone of the instruments give the music force and fire making the album a joy to listen.Another excellent song on this album is “Dust Eater”. It is a mid-paced romper stomper. A perfect blend of punch and bounce that will certainly incite a mosh pit when played live. “Descent” channels a blackened Slayer-esque vibe using the exotic evil inherent in the Phrygian mode.A gem on Exumer’s Hostile Defiance album is the resurrection of the Scorpion’s pre-thrash tune called “He’s A Woman – She’s a Man”. They have taken the song’s original heavy riffs and put them on Exumer thrash metal steroids. With chain-gun guitars blazing, this is a brilliant addition to an extremely fun album.Hostile Defiance by Exumer is rip-roaring thrash fest. The music is bold and brash. Just as you would hope from any powerful thrash album, Exumer have captured the strength and tenacity of their music on this album. Hostile Defiance will have you boiling with rage and throwing a middle finger at those you seek to hold you back in life. Who cares if Exumer aren’t breaking any new ground; this album will fuel any metalhead’s need for speed and power.
