Bio:

ADX is a french band which was formed in 1982.The first demo was recorded in 1984, then the band was signed on Devil's Records and in April 1985 the album "Exécution" was released. In 1986, the band was signed on Sydney Production and releases a new album, entitled "La Terreur".After the studio album "Suprématie" and the live album "Exécution publique", ADX was signed on the German label Noise in 1989. Then the band releases its first album in English, entitled "Wreid Visions". After the release, ADX stops its collaboration with Noise and was disbanded in 1992.In 1998, ADX was reformed for some shows in France, and 8 months later, the band entered at "Studio Du Val" to record a new album entitled "Résurrection". Then the band stops all its activities. The band was back after 7 years with a reformation show at Montereau in October 2006. The next show, on 7 January 2007 at "La Locomotive" (Paris) marks the 25th anniversary of the band. Then , in 2008, the band releases a new album, entitled "Division Blindée". The band released in October 2011 a new album entitled "Immortal" on the record label 13a and including fourteen new songs accompanied by a bonus DVD of concert Raismesfest festival 2009.February 2013, following the departure of Klod (bass) and several hearings, Julien ROUSSEAU (ex Fallen Joy) who joined ADX as the official bassist. The first date of the new line-up is organized together with Moonspell in Limoges April 20, 2013, ADX then enters a phase of composition before resuming concerts in October and return to the studio before the end of 2013.

Album:

It's been more than 5 years since ADX returned after a 10 year absence. The euphoria born from this surprise has now subsided and the band has lost its quasi-mystical aura and tends to fall into line. So, of course, the very fast heavy metal of the French band is good, but just as good as that of their international counterparts. And while Nightmare and Satan Jokers (other French returnees) have managed to establish themselves as the driving forces in their genre, ADX are merely the good, hard-working students of the class. Commando Suicide' is the best example, with its title borrowed from Satan Jokers, its chorus from Vulcan and its riffs from Killers. The sound is excellent, the interpretation is good, the chorus is effective and the song goes down well, but there's not that little extra soul, that surprise that could make this track go from being "good" to "essential". And it's not the symphonic intro or the power ballad, 'Coeur Eteint', on which Phil happily manages to convey his emotion, that will be enough to catch us off guard. However, this eighth album is not bad, its strong points are numerous. Amongst these, we can note Phil's excellent diction, which compensates for a certain linearity in his singing, demanding lyrics with very happy musical sounds, a very good production and magnificent guitar parts, just like those we can enjoy in 'Parcelse'. Fans of melodic Thrash and beautiful guitars will also find something to enjoy in the heaviness of 'Dernier Carré' or in the rhythmic changes of the speedy 'King Of Pain', two excellent tracks.Despite some excellent tracks ('Divine Menace', 'La Caresse Du Tyran'...), "ultimatum" is not the must-have album that we expected from a band like ADX, who only confirms their talent...

Album:

ADX is one of the most legendary and well-known French Heavy Metal bands. A true legend of Heavy Speed Metal. They ruled the stage during the 80s and after their reunion they performed live in highly acclaimed festivals from Keep It True (Germany) to HellFest (France) and more.La Terreur is now re-released including additional bonus tracks, for all those who were looking for their old albums.A single year after ADX's lightning fast debut released they're already striking back for more and continuing on with their excellent formula for a great follow up. While slightly different compared to their debut, this release is still speed metal in its purest form and definitely couldn't be mistaken for any other band besides ADX.Again, just like all of ADX's releases vocalist Phil proudly salutes his homeland and the lyrics are all in French. Even if I don't know what they're saying, the music here is still good enough to keep me entertained throughout and Phil's great vocals and performance flow very well with the band. While there are some changes here when compared to their debut, there's also a handful of improvements. The biggest one being the superior production. While still pretty raw compared to a lot of other bands at the time, its much clearer than Exécution and doesn't sound nearly as drowned out. Style and sound wise however when compared to Exécution it seems like they wanted to go for something a little more epic here, more majestic with more substance. Simply put, this album isn't quite as fast and furious as the debut was. Instead there seems to more of a melodic focus in the rhythm's and even within the solo's. This isn't exactly a bad thing but because of this I personally found this album to be a little harder to get into than the previous one. Its just one of those albums you have to give a few extra spins to let it grow on you. Then you realize there's no regrets.Regardless, for the most part this is still something you could truly call 'speed metal'. There is a tremendous amount of focus on the quick riffing and that sharp guitar tone they displayed on their debut is still intact here. The rhythm's, riffs, harmonies, dual teamwork, and the solo's are all extremely technical and usually way over the normal speed limit. Though, there's even a handful of times where the bass becomes the total driving force and stands out quite a bit as well. You can expect a few bass solo's as well. Sadly while the production has improved most of the instruments and sound here, the drums actually sound weaker than before and they're usually more mid-paced than anything else (alright alright, for speed metal standards they're slower here). Still, hardly something you would call disappointing. The instrumental track Alesia is extremely impressive and just displays more virtuosity from these amazing musicians all around. Its an instrumental you -won't- find yourself skipping!Sadly this album is downright short just as their debut was and their next release wouldn't be much longer either. It'll be a quick spin but its nonstop and very consistent. Either way, its pretty hard to call ADX out and say they've ever released anything bad, because they just simply haven't.Perhaps ADX's debut could be compared to Agent Steel's Skeptics Apocalypse, you could then compare this album to Agent Steel's Unstoppable Force. This and Exécution are undeniably ADX, but with different flavors. It all comes down to being a matter of taste, but you really can't go wrong with this at all. Highly recommended to those who like to deluge themselves into speed metal territory. Essential to the genre.

Album:

This album came during a time where speed metal bands were beginning to mature greatly in the late 80s prior to the ever-popular thrash explosion of 1988. This album shows how ADX transformed from a more mid-paced heavy metal band, as seen in their previous album, into the monster of a speed metal band now seen in Supremetie. The band utilizes the very popular style of single note harmonies (As seen within the first minute of most of the album’s songs) which is very reminiscent of the polish band Turbo’s infamous Kawaleria Szatana album and the very popular Blind Guardian Battalions of Fear.I remember listening to this album on one of my nightly walks and remembering the surprise I received when the title track finally kicked into full gear; especially after the very strange introduction entitled “Nostromo.” It was more than a mere simple transitions as the title track kicked right into intense speed and energy which almost made me feel like I was listening to Screaming for Vengeance for the first time all over again. The wailing guitar solos made it apparent that this band meant business and as a result, the musicianship held up through its entirety. The rest of the album took turns displaying mid paced, yet equally energetic, anthems seen in the songs “Notre Dame de Paris” and “Broceliende” which don’t stay mid-paced for very long. The instrumental “Les Secrets de Olympe” is a prime example of their technicality with the guitarists continuously moving around the fretboard in very technical thrash styles of playing reminiscent to something that might have come off Breaking The Silence. While this album may become very heavy at times, it is able to maintain a speed metal feel rather than allowing the band to become encapsulated within the thrash genre. At times it feels like they push the boundaries a bit especially in the song “La Peur et Loubil” which has a driving intro and verse riff that transforms into a bridge that sounds like it could have been played on one of Heathen or Flotsam’s first albums. The majority of the album, however, remains a prime example of heavy speed metal reminiscent of the technicality of Toxik and the energy of an early power metal band still trapped in the 80s. As a result, ADX provides the listener with energetic speed metal that shows that they definitely took great care in creating this album.

Album:

The French speed and heavy metal band ‘ADX’ returns with its new album “Non Serviam”. As always, sound and song writing are flawless. Fans of bands like Savage Grace, Blaspeme and Destructor should check this out.ADX can be traced all the way back to 1982 France. They're a stellar example of how much of a vacuum the realm of heavy metal can really be, despite the genre's famously keen awareness of worldwide talent. There's still so much left to be 'discovered', that even the hordes of 'die hards' aren't completely hip to. Perhaps 2016 could be the year that decades worth of ADX heavy metal becomes more widely acknowledged, due in large part to their brand new full-length release, 'Non Serviam'.Much like they did back around '86 with 'La Terreur', their sophomore album, 'Non Serviam' builds quickly with an intro and breaks straight into "La Morte en Face," which kicks 'Non Serviam' of with a brief riff introduction that bursts into a full-throttle attack with some really engaging guitar work that includes some interesting accentuation with distinct tremolo trills, a few minute in. The track immediately goes to work, delivering the album's first forceful dose of power that remains constant throughout the LP with relative ease and efficiency.Twin guitar harmonies are one of ADX's strongest attributes. While it's true that they utilize that particular element whenever possible, it's done with intention, so as to avoid potential overuse. "B-17 Phantom," "Cosaques," and the title cut are some quick, further examples. Though vocalist Phil Grelaud's has naturally matured over the decades, his experience trumps time and he delivers his established style with complete conviction. In their beginnings, ADX's albums tended to be more on the 'speed' part of the metal spectrum. At this point, they've continued to retain much of that aspect, but there's been a heavy helping of modern epic power integrated into the ADX sound.Tracks like "L'irlandaise," "La Furie," and "Theâtre de Sang" are marked points, particularly worth looking out for. You'll see that this modern style caters perfectly to Grelaud's commanding vocal style.Ultimately, ADX has refused to give in. Regardless of what the obstacles and trials the so-called 'industry', at large, has thrown at such bands, they've never stopped putting their work out there for their own generation, and those of the future, to discover and relish. It's bands like ADX that will truly help keep the flag waving.

Album:

It seems like about ten minutes since I reviewed the last ADX album, Bestial, but COVID is messing with my internal clock because that was actually last January, almost two years ago now. This one was made by the same line-up, with the pair of founder members who have always stayed with the band throughout its history still there: vocalist Phil Grélaud and drummer Didier Bouchard. This is similar but arguably a little better.I liked the opening song proper, Le sang de l'ennemi, which kicks off in lively heavy metal style and then ratchets up the gears to something closer to speed metal. There are some tight changes and the twin guitars of Nicklaus Bergen and a gentleman who only goes by Neo are woven together in stylish fashion. I find that I like my ADX when they're playing at speed and this one delivers in just the way I like it: clean, speedy and technical. Génération perdue lowers the speed a little but adds more changes. The buzzsaw guitarwork that kicks off Sacrificé pour la cause took me right back. They slow down a little after that and I have to admit that I got distracted and didn't get hijacked back in again until the closer, another fast song called Invasion. Listening through a second time, I realised that there's good stuff here in between but we have to pay a little more attention. After another time, I found that Guerre mystique, a lively instrumental in the vein of Iron Maiden that oddly turns out to be the longest piece of music on offer here at almost six minutes, may actually be my favourite track. Now, that shouldn't surprise me much, as I'm not the world's biggest fan of Grélaud's vocals, but I don't have anything against them. He does what he does well. I just think that his particular style of punk-infused metal vocals, which, to be fair, he's been delivering to ADX since 1982, has become a little generic in the decades since. He accompanies really well, but he doesn't stand out notably above his peers, in a genre where many iconic vocalists do exactly that. Now, is that a good thing or a bad thing? That depends on your tastes. To mine, he could be a little higher in the mix too.I should also add that one of the reasons that I realised that I prefer ADX in instrumental mode to the ADX with vocals is because they go instrumental rather often. These songs aren't particularly long, the longest at the five minute and change level and many a minute shorter, but most have a solid instrumental midsection and some of those are a lot more than solid. I'd call out Le reflet du Mal and especially the characterful Terre de colère here, along with those faster earlier songs. It's probably fair to mention that these French titles are more traditional metal fare than Bestial and its horror themed material. The best songs translate to Blood of the Enemy, Mystical War, The Reflection of Evil and Land of Wrath. The English titled Trouble is excellent too, if an instrumental intro to Invasion, which, of course, is the same in French and English. The album title (and name of the neat intro) means Strange Visions, so maybe there's a little more fantasy going on here.I only gave Bestial a 6/10, which is still a recommended rating, as I rarely review any albums that I don't recommend, but this one's a safe 7/10. It's good to see ADX getting busier in their third stint as a band and still turning out solid and reliable albums. And, that said, now I need to check out their 1990 album, Weird Visions, because it looks rather similar to this. Is this really new material or a re-recorded version in their native French? I'm leaning towards the latter.
