Bio:

Death Angel is an American thrash metal band from Concord, California, initially active from 1982 to 1991 and again since 2001. Death Angel has released seven studio albums, two demo tapes, one box set and two live albums. Two independent releases, The Ultra-Violence (1987) and Frolic Through the Park (1988), attracted the attention of Geffen Records, which signed the quintet in 1989 and released their next album, Act III, one year later. While Death Angel was touring in support of Act III, drummer Andy Galeon was injured in a tour bus accident and needed more than a year to fully recover. This resulted in the band's break up in 1991. However, Death Angel reformed in 2001 (without original guitarist Gus Pepa) at the Thrash of the Titans benefit concert for Testament singer Chuck Billy. The band continues to record and perform today. Death Angel is currently working on a new album, which is due for release in April 2016.Death Angel was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, in 1982 by cousins Rob Cavestany (lead guitar), Dennis Pepa (vocals, bass), Gus Pepa (rhythm guitar), and Andy Galeon (drums) -- all of Filipino descent. After considering a number of different names for the band, including Dark Fury, Cavestany and D. Pepa settled on the name Death Angel after coming across a book by that title in a book store.[3] In 1983, the band released their first demo, Heavy Metal Insanity, with Matt Wallace serving as producer. According to Mark Osegueda, the group was then "more like a metal band, more like Iron Maiden, Tygers Of Pan Tang and stuff like that," as the so-called Bay Area thrash movement was only just beginning to rise to prominence at the time and make its influence felt.Osegueda, a second cousin of the other four members who had been working as their roadie, became the group's vocalist in 1984 and performed his first show with the band on a bill with Megadeth in April of that year (at one of the four Megadeth gigs to feature Kerry King on guitar).Death Angel continued to play club gigs in and around the San Francisco Bay area for nearly two years, writing songs and refining their stage show. In 1986, the band recorded the Kill As One demo with Metallica's Kirk Hammett (whom they had met at a record store signing in 1983) as producer. The underground tape trading wave of the early 1980s led to extensive distribution of the demo, bringing the band wide attention. Osegueda later recalled that prior to the release of the band's first album, "We were playing in L.A. and New York, and the crowd was singing our songs, because there was this underground tape trading .... That's what keeps it alive, and I think that's absolutely wonderful."

Album:

Frolic through the Park is the second studio album by the band Death Angel, released in 1988.The song "Bored" was used in a scene in the 1990 movie Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III.Their refreshing debut The Ultra-Violence made clear these guys were one of the most competent Bay Area thrashers, featuring a very brutal sound that satisfied the most diehard fans. For the following record, the Filipino act joined the growing trend of change in thrash by late 80’s. The old primitive ways were getting obsolete and groups had to find their own identity to prevail among the other huge bunch of generic subgenre bands. Some decided to choose melody and technique; other simply sold out and played ballads while Death Angel preferred to combine their raw sound with alternative influences. That determination they’d later go further into started with Frolic Through The Park.Fortunately, they haven’t got rid of aggression and velocity yet. The first couple of tracks are the heaviest artillery in the pack, both “3rd Floor” and “Road Mutants” thrash hard including the elemental characteristics of the subgenre, though this time these guys intend to add a bit of complexity the first record lacked. Riff variations have increased, structures are more intricate and instrumentally this attempt is much perfectionist. “Bored” (Yeah, the song on the Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III soundtrack) and “Devil’s Metal” follow that pattern, away from the common early Death Angel ways, with richer arrangements, a more notable presence of melody and a pretty elaborated job by the combo Rob Cavestany & Gus Pepa. Other like the both casual sing-along compositions “Open Up” and “Guilty Of Innocence” are still quite thrashy but rather accessible compared with the rest, getting commercial on the choruses with that lovely backing choir. Actually, vocals are undoubtedly numerous and taking control at times, even defining some cut sequences while guitars follow them discreetly in the background. Instrumental parts aren’t that progressive on the mid-paced “Confused” and its simple weighty guitar lines or the punkish “Why You Do This” either, although both are professionally constructed and passionately executed, showing a remarkable musical diversity that escapes from the uniformity of most of thrash groups. Culmination is achieved by the final epic number “Mind Rape” particularly, along with the also slightly complicated “Shores Of Sin”. Instrumental passages become lengthier on those, with the Bay Area Thrashers trying their best to improve and increase the structures consistence, successfully. There’s no doubt about it, these Filipinos made a difference from the rest with their distinctive unique style they finally reached with this record. By 1988 thrash was the most popular metal subgenre and many bands were around playing good stuff, so the need to offer something characteristic and avoid generic sounds became evident and crucial. Death Angel were aware of that and left behind the The Ultra-Violence basic schemes to evolve and make something much more advanced. To conceive this new sound, they took inspiration from diverse music genres like funk, punk, hard rock and a bit of progressive stuff, making an unpredictable mixture that works out fine but inevitably relegates the basic thrash elements to a humble presence in most of these tunes. In fact, the heavy metal tag would definitely fit most of the compositions according to the refined nature of riffs, the dynamic though traditional disciplined tempos which refuse to go really fast and the emphasis the band puts on melody. This new direction is clearer, determined to get rid of topics and design a more mature work, very tolerant with melody as I mentioned and exploring new musical horizons most of Death Angel’s peers could have never imagined. They want to break the limitations of thrash at all cost, even if that means ignoring speed and brutality. Right or wrong, that choice certainly made nobody feel indifferent; the strictest fans might found these tracks kinda adulterated and weaker than the previous album lethal material. Some riffs series are slightly chaotic, direction is sometimes unfocused, a few instrumental passages are clumsy but it’s clear these guys did a serious honest effort.I’m sure most of us would’ve preferred a The Ultra-Violence sequel, but Death Angel were probably too inventive and ambitious to record the same LP twice back then. Were those musical modifications and experiments reasonable? It’s obvious this release was an essential step forward for the group’s development, on other hand they went too far on the following work, on which their thrash roots would be totally denied and this is where all that decay started. Once again, uniformity, enjoyable clichés and topics were proved as the truly unique elements of thrash, because very few really managed to find a late-80’s sound that reached the high results of their earliest stuff. Evolving doesn’t mean necessarily improving, at least in this case it didn’t.

Bio:

The Filipino act, originally comprising teen cousins guitarist Rob Cavestany, Dennis Pepa on bass, Andy Galeon on drums, marked their individuality with a good degree of technicality and soon carved out a niche fan base on the San Francisco Metal scene. Although the band came together in 1982, very briefly being billed as Dark Theory prior to adopting the Death Angel title from a book cover, it would be five years before their first album the widely admired "The Ultra-Violence".During his time in the band, original vocalist Dennis still performed the vocals on the song "Thrashers", which has been a set list staple since 1983, before Mark Osegueda joined the band.Andy Galeon was ten years old when he joined the band in 1982.All of Death Angel's members from the 80s-90s lineup are related by blood.Ted Aguilar is known as "the world's smallest Samoan".Mark Osegueda left Death Angel after a final gig in Omiya, Japan in April 1991. Following that split the remaining members performed a few shows in the Bay Area as "The Past" doing acoustic sets. In the summer of 1991 they changed their name to The Organization. In 2001, Death Angel had reunited after 10 years of silence when they did a "one-time reunion" gig at the Thrash of the Titans festival which was held for Testament's Chuck Billy. This festival was held in order to raise money for Chuck's on going battle with his chest cancer. Death Angel were to reunite only for that one time, but they decided to just stay reunited because according to them, they miss the feeling of entertaining and love making music.Their '85 demo "Kill As One" was produced by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.Death Angel was one of the many thrash metal bands to sign to a major label, having signed to Geffen Records in 1989.

Album:

Still featuring only two original members in the form of the screeching Mark Osegueda and fret wizard Rob Cavestany, don't let that dissuade you from checking out DEATH ANGEL's seventh studio album, "The Dream Calls for Blood". Whether you consider "The Ultra-Violence", "Act III" or "The Art of Dying" the definitive DEATH ANGEL album, consider "The Dream Calls for Blood" one of the finest albums in the thrash legends' repertoire.Almost nobody could've predicted DEATH ANGEL would bounce back so strong after briefly disbanding following the roundabout chain of events surrounding "Act III". Yet here Osegueda and Cavestany find themselves following 2010's "Relentless Retribution", which was met with both favor and criticism. Still in the fold with them are rhythm guitarist Ted Aguilar, bassist Damien Sisson and drummer Will "Beastman" Carroll. While echoes of the Pepa brothers and Andy Galeon are still uttered amongst longtime thrash clans, there should be no reason they nor DEATH ANGEL's newer fans won't come out of "The Dream Calls for Blood" feeling like the real deal's clubbed them upside the head. One of the overall fastest albums bearing the DEATH ANGEL brand, "The Dream Calls for Blood" is a robust, near-perfect harbinger of thrash. A large part of it has to do with Aguilar, Sisson and Carroll's capacity to keep up with Rob Cavestany's tireless and blurry shredding. The rest of it is sheer willpower by Osegueda and Cavestany to live up to the standards of a long-ago family of youngsters that defied numerous odds. The result is an electrifying performance by DEATH ANGEL 2013 in a full frontal performance once again produced by the always-in-demand Jason Suecof. The temptation to parallel "The Dream Calls for Blood" to "The Ultra-Violence" is irresistible, particularly when you consider DEATH ANGEL recently performed the latter album in full on tour as a mark of its 25th anniversary. By default, the energy levels demanded to recreate that renowned slab was bound to spill its hyperactive seeds into "The Dream Calls for Blood".With far more finesse but no less speed, this album rolls with a vengeance on the inescapable velocity of "Left for Dead", "Empty", "Son of the Morning", "Caster of Shame" and "Fallen". Even the scorching finale to "Detonate" is slammed to the hilt with speed, articulation and Mark Osegueda peeling off a piercing falsetto in the final seconds. He then sings a polyrhythmic chorus that lays straightforward yet perfectly linear to the pummeling thrash of the concluding stanza of "Execution/Don't Save Me".Rob Cavestany's dizzying solos on "Fallen", "Left for Dead", "Caster of Shame", "Succubus" and "Execution/Don't Save Me" are filled with at least twenty notes dropped per second. The spectacular outro to "Territorial Instinct/Bloodlust" flares with Cavestany's electric magma. Damien Sisson plays follow the leader with ease on "Caster of Shame", no matter how often Cavestany threatens to bust loose from him. Sisson may be one of metal's immediate unsung heroes on bass, he's that freaking good on this album.Mark Osegueda, who took his fair share of ridicule in DEATH ANGEL's formative years, couldn't be working at a higher level these days. His confidence in hardly in dispute and he's as much a force on "The Dream Calls for Blood" as anyone in this lineup. For apparent fun, he even changes his vocal pitch on "Territorial Instinct/Bloodlust" where he comes off, of all people, Stephen Pearcy.Like OVERKILL's been long riding with two founding members and still retaining more than just their original fan base, DEATH ANGEL stands tall with two-fifths of the inaugural flock on "The Dream Calls for Blood". Every crevice of this album is massive, even when riding mid-tempo on "Detonate" before its blazing finish. "The Dream Calls for Blood" is simply tremendous.

Album:

Thrash veterans DEATH ANGEL will release "The Bay Calls For Blood - Live In San Francisco" on LP exclusively through Nuclear Blast mail-order on July 24. The release will also be made available in the digital format and as a bonus CD with the band's upcoming DVD called "A Thrashumentary". Artwork for the LP version was created by Joey James Hernandez and can be seen below."Joey James Hernandez has created designs for most of our tour merch over the past few years," commented guitarist Rob Cavestany. "We love his style and felt it the perfect fit with this record! "Joey is also creating original art for the back cover and poster that will be included. We want to give our fans the full old-school album experience with lots to look at while listening to the record, the way we used to check out music back in the day when it was quality over quantity!"We are a Bay Area band — and have always been proud of it. That's why we recorded the album here and wanted the art to reflect where we're from — in a brutal way, of course! It's a tribute to our hometown fans. The city has evolved so much since we were kids growing up here. Unfortunately, swarms of parasites have invaded SF like a disease and are sucking the life out of it in many ways. I envisioned an image depicting the aftermath of the eradication of these dot com techie scums!"The front cover depicts a disintegrated Bay Bridge while in the distance San Francisco lies in ruin. The ominous sky is the color of fire, the water blood red. The title is written in the blood of victims whose bodies have been dragged down to the second deck of the bridge, where their assailants plot the next attack..."Adds Joey James Hernandez: "I am not used to drawing atmospheres but when the boys at DEATH ANGEL asked me to do this, it was a no brainer to do it and challenge myself. Their visuals and music for this reminded and inspired me of Mad Max, Chernobyl Diaries, any bad dream or premonition we have of aftermath, strife and danger that still lurks in its ashes.""A Thrashumentary" was directed, shot and edited by Tommy Jones (KATAKLYSM, SOILWORK, LAMB OF GOD, CARCASS, TESTAMENT) of Videohammer Studios. It will be released on July 24 via Nuclear Blast. As previously reported, DEATH ANGEL will enter the studio on October 1 to begin recording its new album for an April 2016 release via Nuclear Blast.Asked by Groovey of Groovey.TV what fans can expect from the follow-up to 2013's "The Dream Calls For Blood", DEATH ANGEL guitarist Ted Aguilar said: "It's gonna be DEATH ANGEL. In my personal opinion, I don't think we're gonna try to top ['The Dream Calls For Blood']. You can't recreate that moment in time. 'The Dream Calls For Blood' is 'The Dream Calls For Blood'. This next album we're writing… I mean, we've got some songs; [we're] four songs in. No lyrics yet, but… It's always gonna be heavy. The foundation of DEATH ANGEL is still there, but it's kind of hard to describe what direction we're going in until it's recorded, mixed and mastered. 'Cause the way DEATH ANGEL writes, we write a song, but it's always evolving — up until the point of recording. Even when it comes down to the mixing. It's just, like, 'Ah, let's change that up.'"He continued: "'The Dream Calls For Blood', it's a great record. We're proud of it. And the next album, it's just gonna be DEATH ANGEL in our mindset today. I'm not gonna say, 'It's gonna be this,' and it ends up being a little different. Who knows what this album is gonna sound like? [But] it's gonna be good."Asked if DEATH ANGEL has been writing any new material on the road, Ted said: "We've written some stuff on the road, and when we get back [home from the current tour], we're gonna write some more. Then we've got Europe in July and August, and we're gonna continue writing in Europe, on downtime and whatnot. 'Cause there's a lot of time on the road; plenty of hours go by, like right now. And then when we get home after Europe, in August, we're gonna spend a couple of weeks off, then all of September is honing in and doing pre-production, writing a little more and just fixing the loose ends."DEATH ANGEL's seventh album, "The Dream Calls For Blood", sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 72 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER), and once again features cover art by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY, CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL).

Album:

San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL will release their new album, "The Evil Divide", on May 27. The CD was once again recorded at AudioHammer studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, DEICIDE), who previously worked on 2010's "Relentless Retribution" and 2013's "The Dream Calls For Blood". Mastering duties were handled by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City. The cover artwork was created by tattoo artist Bob Tyrrell and can be seen below.DEATH ANGEL guitarist Rob Cavestany said: "Both Mark [Osegueda, vocals] and I had been tattooed by Bob, and when the subject of album artwork came up, we approached him to create the design. We wanted an image that would represent the idea of 'The Evil Divide'; something beautiful, yet simultaneously wicked, hence the death moth. Bob realized our vision with mere pencil and paper, and now we proudly present to you the cover art for our eighth studio album, 'The Evil Divide'."Osegueda told SFWeekly.com about working with Suecof again: "It's the third time we've used him, and we couldn't really be happier."He continued: "This time, all the music was written and lyrics were written with the exception of one song, which I purposely saved to write on the spot."Sometimes you can get a great vibe from a studio and draw inspiration from that. That song came out great."Mark added: "It's got the aggressiveness of the last two records, but our songwriting has improved dramatically. Really, it sounds like DEATH ANGEL should."Regarding DEATH ANGEL's mindset going into the songwriting process for the upcoming CD, Osegueda told Rock Hard magazine: "When we started working with Jason Suecof for the last two records, 'Relentless Retribution' and 'The Dream Calls For Blood', we thought we were gonna do two records intense like that and kind of go back [to the more] melodic [direction of 1990's] 'Act III', but the last two records, we've been loving so much writing that style, and the crowds have been enjoying them so much."In our minds, even if we think we're being more brutal than we've ever been, it's inevitable that we are obsessed with melody, so there's always gonna be melody that separates us from, say, different thrash bands or extreme bands, because we always veer to a melody and catchy hooks. No matter how brutal we think we're being, we like to throw in hooks, so we're just gonna carry on how we're doing now and try to pick as many of the young punters there and keep our stronghold on the old punters."DEATH ANGEL released "A Thrashumentary" in July 2015 via Nuclear Blast. The DVD was directed, shot and edited by Tommy Jones (KATAKLYSM, SOILWORK, LAMB OF GOD, CARCASS, TESTAMENT) of Videohammer Studios. The release also includes a full live album titled "The Bay Calls For Blood".

Album:

David Byrne wrote in his book How Music Works “Something about music urges us to engage with its larger context, beyond the piece of plastic it came on-it seems to be part of our genetic makeup that we can be so deeply moved by this art form. Music resonates in so many parts of the brain that we can’t conceive of it being an isolated thing.” Creating music that resonates to the core of those who love heavy metal is what Death Angel have done with their masterpiece called Humanicide. The opening title track screams “I am a metal anthem”. Stadium-sized riffs which are guaranteed to incite fists flying into the air. This tune quickly accelerates setting the tone for much of Humanicide; electric imagery glowing within songs that project the fierce power of metal. Death Angel are at the top of their game on this album and you can feel it.Once again, Death Angel worked with Jason Suecof at Audiohammer Studios in production and Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound for mastering. This winning combination gives you clear articulation of each musician. In particular, you can hear the nifty fretwork of bassist Damien Sisson which is a treat. Too many metal albums end up losing the bass behind the chugging guitars. Here the unique voice of each player is given an equal punch. Whether it is the brilliant guitars of Rob Cavestany and Ted Aguilar or the driving percussion of Will Carroll, you get it all in spades. As I’m screaming my head off in the car with Mark Osegueda on “Divine Defector”, I’m sure passersby were thinking “Man, that dude is having a rough day”. Veins bulging and spit flying, I felt the indignant rage that Mark channeled in this song. His voice is razor sharp emanating strength and viciousness. Where other veterans in the metal arena are losing their edge with time, Mark sounds better than ever.A key feature of Humanicide is the diversity of the songwriting. You get wonderful cascading arpeggios, beautifully heavy chords and a shredding solo on “Aggressor”. Then Death Angel recalls the glory days of speed rock kings such as Motorhead and Saxon on “I Came For Blood”. Turning the page, we enter the haunting chapter of “Immortal Behated”. This mid-paced song features plaintive guitar as bookends for the heavy fist-pumping riffs within. The end offers a frenetic guitar solo that wanders off into somber piano and acoustic guitar.Heavy metal is known for the loyalty of its fans. This is especially true for fans of Death Angel. The fan club is rabid for all things Death Angel and the band has paid tribute to them with a song called “The Pack”. The tribal beat and pummeling chanting chorus forecast scenes of fans with faces glowing from the house lights and mouth stretched wide open in screams of approval. One of the most intriguing songs on Humanicide is the bonus track “The Day I Walked Away”. Echoed guitars and spoken lyrics give this song a futuristic Blade Runner feel. You can feel the consuming toxic rain wash away the person you use to be and exposing the carapace of tomorrow’s self. This exquisite song is a marvelous way to wrap up this album. Now flip that bad boy over and give it another spin.Humanicide by Death Angel is easily a candidate for best album of 2019. I will go further by putting this album into the top 10 all-time metal albums. Death Angel have tenaciously kept the torch of metal music lit through their last four albums culminating in this masterpiece. What every metal fan wants is compelling songwriting that invites you to cleanse your soul in the purifying fire of rage or lose yourself in the space between each note. Death Angel have painted a completely satisfying soundscape of furious music that will enthrall you for life.
