Bio:

Side project of LEVIATHAN musicans Tobias and Jule Dahs.Exploring a whole different style of guitar-driven music with no boundaries.Classic Rock in the style of british legends MAGNUM, Blackmore inspired riffs and a touch of modern Melodic Metal, all combined with a female lead-singer with a distinct rockvoice, these are the ingredients for the sound of KINGS WINTERs debut EP "Forging The Cataclysm". Named after their german hometown "Knigswinter", the band was founded by the married couple Jule and Tobias Dahs as a side-project in late 2018.Jule began here musical career with her maiden name Zinnow as a part of Melodic Metal outfit SKADIKA in 2005, before the five-piece broke up 9 years later at the end of 2014. Following a three year break she then joined her husband Tobias Dahs and his band LEVIATHAN, who have recently celebrated a well received comback with their third album "Of Origins Unearthed" and her as a second vocalist.Tobias on the other hand has been a part of LEVIATHAN ever since the bands start in early 2007 and has most recently also been building his own home-studio in order to record and produce the afore mentioned "Of Origins Unearthed". The studio then played a major role in the developement of KINGS WINTER, as it enabled Tobias to expand his endeavors into the territory of classic Hard Rock, which never would have had a place in the fierce Melodic Death Metal of his main band. During the second half of 2018 some rough ideas quickly became a set of songs, which will now see the light of day on the bands debut "Forging The Cataclysm".

Album:

What do progressive melodic death and melodic metal have in common, except, of course, their claim to be melodic? Not much, actually, but there are always musicians who feel at home in both genres. Like Tobias Dahs, guitarist of the Melodic Deather LEVIATHAN from Königswinter, who together with his wife Juhle has launched the project KINGS WINTER (!). The result is a first 6-track EP called "Forging The Cataclysm", on which the good Tobias is responsible for all instruments. On the one hand, it is remarkable, but on the other hand, it also means that you have to make some slight drifts in terms of drum sound, because the programmed drum kit lacks a bit of the necessary pressure. But that's a matter of taste. The songs themselves are unmistakably based on the melodic hard rock / metal of the 80s, but without seeming somehow dusty. Dahs' wife Juhle, who has a decent (vocal) tube, reminds me a little of Dorothee Pesch."Forging The Cataclysm" starts with "Time's Running Out", a neat mid-tempo rocker with a catchy chorus that instantly encourages mate shaking and singing along. The part would have been great on an old Warlock disc and was not unjustly released as a single in advance. With "The Grand Delusion" the speed is reduced a bit, the melody sounds familiar and the chorus needs a few attempts to get stuck, otherwise the number scores with a cool guitar solo and a slight Axel Rudi Pell vibe. The subsequent title track is in a similar direction to the entry number, though perhaps not quite as catchy, while "Age Of Reason" might go through as a bulky decal of "The Grand Delusion". In between there is a short guitar intermezzo with "At Road's End", which connects the two pieces mentioned above, even if I can not quite understand the context - at least without knowledge of the lyrics. As a bonus track is found with "A Sailor's Tale" nor the obligatory (Schunkel-) ballad, whose only blemish for me are the tempo strikes to chorus out, because they seem rather inappropriate rather than promoting dynamics. Still not a bad song.KINGS WINTER have made a promising start with their debut EP, where fans of 80s hardwurst can not go wrong. In terms of songwriting is certainly still a little air up, but you should keep the name KINGS WINTER times on the screen.
