Bio:

Out of print, 1995 debut CD by Parish, a superb heavy metal outfit from Florida, led by legendary Crimson Glory guitarist, Ben Jackson. Production by Jim Morris.

Album:

When Crimson Glory went on hiatus after their second album, guitarist / co-founder Ben Jackson formed PARISH in 1990, and managed to record this sole album titled “Envision“. It remained shelved until 1995 when Long Island Records released the CD, when Parish was already dissolved as Jackson concentrated in the Crimson Glory Astronomica comeback album. After many years out of print, “Envision” has now been unearthed in a remastered form (limited to 500 copies) including 6 bonus tracks, and new artwork. All of us remember Crimson Glory and how gloriously they brought a new musical delivery to the metal field in the second half of the ’80s.However, very few probably remember a short lived solo project by guitarist Ben Jackson known as Parish, who released this album in the very midst of metal’s demise that came very close to that original Crimson Glory sound.“Envision” definitely suggests that Jackson was as much a factor in shaping the glory days of Crimson Glory as vocalist Midnight was.Although Parish is somewhat influenced by early ’90s sound – that meaning clean vocals and melodic riffs & solos – more than half of the songs on “Envision” definitely point towards a strong thematic similarity to material heard on Crimson’s “Transcendence”.Powerhouse vocalist John David is very clean, and while he’s more melodic in his delivery, the song arrangements here sound like they were written for Midnight. I believe many tracks here were penned for a future Crimson Glory album.Combined with a guitar sound that has the same mixture of crunch and depth as Crimson Glory’s 80s albums and a solid rhythm section presence, at times you can almost picture some guy singing karaoke to old classics like “Eternal World” and “Painted Skies”, hitting all the notes yet not really emulating the character of the original singer.Granted you’ve got a power ballad like “Forever”, and pretty melodic hard rock tunes in “Summer” and “Believe In Me”.On the Crimson Glory-like material, “Desert Wings” is one of my favorites here. After the menacing intro riff you’ll all but expect Midnight’s high iron voice to shutter your ear drums like a plummeting skyscraper. The same basically goes for the equally evil sounding though “Down And Dirty” and “Set The Night On Fire”, which all have that same mix of killer riffs and down tempo pacing that made the Crimson Glory debut such a classic.“Rachel’s Eyes” and “Envision” are basically the exact same story, and David’s vocals actually attempt to imitate Midnight at times, although not as dark and raunchy sounding. The other ballad here is not ‘power ballad’ at all, but a ‘metal ballad’, reaching for that same gloomy darkness that made Jackson’s old band such a force to be reckoned with. The really unfortunate thing is that because of when this album came out and how much attention was paid to Crimson Glory’s previous blunders, this one time project has been all but forgotten. There’s only one member from said band on here (although Crimson Glory’s drummer Dana Burnell perform on some of the bonus tracks), but what Ben Jackson accomplished with Parish is on par with the early Crimson Glory material. If you’re searching for something very related to Crimson Glory’s original sound spiced with some early ’90s (melodic) hard rock, Parish’s “Envision” is cut from a mostly similar grain musically.
