Bio:

Jon Ryan Schaffer (born March 15, 1968) is an American heavy metal musician. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and last remaining original member of the Florida-based heavy metal band Iced Earth, which he formed in 1985 under the name "Purgatory". He also sings in his side project Sons of Liberty and played guitar for Demons and Wizards, his collaboration with Blind Guardian frontman Hansi Kürsch. Purgatory formed January 20,1985 with Jon on rhythm guitar and he also designed the bands logo. After personnel changes, and a name change, Iced Earth put out their fist self titled debut. On this first album, Jon seemed to be a jack of all trades. Not only did he play rhythm guitar and sing background vocals, he also co-produced as well, like he has on all Iced Earth albums.. Jon also sang lead vocals on the song Stormrider on their second album, Night of the Stormrider. Jon is a very talented person and has a particular knack for story telling. After a three year hiatus, Iced Earth came back with a brand new singer, Matt Barlow, and a heavier sound. They released Burnt Offerings in 1995 and The Dark Saga in 1996. Then in 1998 Jon's Something Wicked storyline emerges. Among the first of these albums was Something Wicked This Way Comes. . The album contained 3 songs based on the Something Wicked story line. The albums tell a very interesting story. I divided them into 3 parts. Here's the links to those blogs: Part 1 Iced Earth pt.1 , Iced Earth PT.2 Iced Earth pt.2 , Iced Earth PT.3 Iced Earth pt.3. John is most noted for playing Gibson Les Paul custom guitars and has a few that are really something special. Here's my favorite one he's using, a black custom with blue flames. Even though another personnel shift with Barlow leaving the band to become a police officer in Georgetown, Delaware and the recruitment of Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals, Jon still held it all together. Jon was also the lead guitarist on Demons and Wizards self titled album as well as their album Touched by the Crimson King. Demons and Wizards was just a side project with Blind Guardian vocalist Hansi Kürsch. The two had met in the early 1990's when Iced Earth and Blind Guardian were on tour together.Their self titled debut was released in 2000. Jon formed Sons of Liberty in 2009, and is a band that is very political. The debut album, Brush-fires of the Mind, was released in December of 2009 as a kind of solo project. Jon sang, played guitar and programmed the drums. He also had a host of guest musicians who also appeared the follow-up EP, Spirit of the Times. This project came about upon learning what the Federal Reserve System is all about. I think that Jon Schaffer has been very involved and instrumental in the power metal movement in America. I say Jon Schaffer is America's King of Power Metal! Long live the King! The band would change their name to Iced Earth before releasing their fourth demo. The "Horror Show" demo was an idea that Jon Schaffer played with for many years, before re-using some of the song titles on the Iced Earth album of the same name (the songs themselves are completely different). Not to be confused with Purgatory from Cleveland, Ohio, or with the Death Metal band Purgatory from Moosup, CT, or with Purgatory or with the Thrash Metal band Purgatory from Texas.

Album:

Before there was Iced Earth, there was its forebear Purgatory. It’s easy to lump the two groups together due to their shared songwriting tropes and emphasis on Jon Schaffer’s signature rhythm guitar, but Purgatory stood out for its horror aesthetic and rather “street” approach to power metal. In a fascinating twist of fate, the group’s core members reunited in 2018 to record this EP. The five songs on here had previously only existed in mid-80s demo form, leading one to wonder how well the combination of Iron Maiden and slasher films will work over thirty years later. For the most part, Purgatory’s material holds up surprisingly well in the modern age. There are some inevitable tweaks wrought by the passage of time and the grit of the band’s demo days has largely been washed away. Arrangements have been spruced up and a clean production job highlights an epic side that’s right in line with classic Iced Earth. This is somewhat at odds with the sleazy aspects of “Jack” and “In Jason’s Mind,” but “Dracula” and “Burning Oasis” fully realize the potential that was merely hinted at back in the day.But the real shocker comes with vocalist Gene Adam. He possesses the shrill character of his early days but there’s much more control behind it, resulting in a legitimately good performance even if it doesn’t have that manic character. Whether he learned some proper techniques in his time away from metal or the years were just inordinarily kind to him, he’s come a long way from the infamously… niche vocals on Iced Earth’s debut. The track order may be the only real nitpick I have with this EP. The Freddy Krueger-inspired “In Your Dreams” wasn’t a great choice for an opener. While it’s not a bad track, it’s easily the weakest of the lot with a mid-tempo structure that doesn’t hit as hard as it should. It probably would’ve worked better in the middle with “Dracula” or “In Jason’s Mind” serving as a more ominously climactic opener.Overall, Purgatory’s EP probably won’t have much reach beyond hardcore Iced Earth fans but I don’t think they’re too worried about that. This is the product of old friends waxing nostalgia and updating songs that never got the chance to shine when they were first written. As somebody who’s listened to the old Purgatory demos, I can say that it does a good job of catching that old school metal spirit. Considering the catalog of songs that were written back then, it wouldn’t surprise me to see more releases like this in the future.
