Born in Sunderland, in 1948, Don Airey turned professional upon graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in 1972. After touring the club and cruise ship circuit he moved to London, where he joined Cozy Powell’s band Hammer in 1974. In 1975 he joined jazz/rock act Colosseum II, recording three albums with them between 1975-78, and also working with Andrew Lloyd-Webber on the theme music for the 'South Bank Show' TV arts programme. In December 1978 Don joined up with Cozy Powell for a second time, this time in Rainbow. His tenure included the band's most commercially successful years from 1979-1981, playing on the hit singles 'Since You Been Gone', 'All Night Long' and 'I Surrender'.He joined Ozzy Osbourne's band until 1985, having already played on the 'Blizzard Of Ozz' album in 1980 (and also Black Sabbath's 'Never Say Die' in 1978) . He was next drafted in to play keyboards on Whitesnake's enormously successful '1987' album, and later its follow up 'Slip Of The Tongue'. Don also contributed (both live and in the studio) to such acts as Alaska, Jethro Tull, and Gary Moore, as well as recording a solo album, K2, in 1988.The 90’s saw him composing music for corporate ID’s (everything from British Airways to Glenfiddich Whiskey) , as well as playiing on sessions, and group projects such as Quatermass II with Nick Simper, and Silver with ex-Gillan guitarist Bernie Torme. In 1997 he arranged the Eurovision Song Contest winner 'Love Shine A Light' for Katrina & The Waves. He also toured with Uli Jon Roth, ELO II, Brian May, Colin Blunstone, The Bonnet / Airey Band, and from 1998-2001 Company of Snakes (reliving former glories with Whitesnake!).In August 2001, Deep Purple invited Don to temporarily replace Jon Lord for a European tour. That invitation was extended to a permanent residency in 2002. Just like Purple bandmate Steve Morse, Airey often has different group and solo projects on the go, so it was no great surprise when he teamed up with Steve, plus his old Ozzy Osbourne bandmates Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake for the (still ongoing) Living Loud project in 2003.
In these days where everybody seems to want to show off at every given occasion, Don Airey is without a doubt “One Of A Kind”. It is hard to find a name amongst all those that over the last 30 years have left their mark in the history of rock that have not utilised Don's keyboard skills at some point. Amongst them Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Gary Moore, Brian May, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and, obviously, Deep Purple, the band of which Don Airey has been a fulltime member for over fifteen years. But Don Airey has never been a session player. Bands and artists work with him for his unique musical vision, for the twist he gives to songs. It is with the same passion, the same energy, the same talent that Don Airey approaches his very own songwriting.“One Of A Kind” is a true classic hard rock gem with melodies, great riffs and solos and a unique band unity. To top it all, his new solo album has been written and recorded using the spirit of a band featuring the following talented musicians. Carl Sentance (from the current line-up of British legends Nazareth) is a singer that all fans of metal voices like those of Rob Halford and Graham Bonnet will love. Bassist Laurence Cottle, who has played with everyone from Black Sabbath to Gary Moore to Chick Corea, forges a great rhythm section with the thunderous talent of Jon Finnigan, apparently as loud onstage as he is at the after show parties. Last but definitely not least, there is the incredible talent of Simon McBride, who has no fear of being compared to the many incredible guitar players Don has worked with before.“One Of A Kind” is one song after the other for the delight of every hard rock fan, who would be making a big mistake were they to overlook this album. It is going to be released on May 25, 2018 on earMUSIC as 2CD (including a bonus live CD), vinyl and digital. It is not difficult to see Don Airey playing one day with Deep Purple in front of 15,000 people and the next day playing the organ in the church of his beloved local village with the same concentration and respect for the music and the audience. It is with the same spirit that Don shows no discernible effort moving from the glories of the last two Deep Purple albums (“Now What?!” and “inFinite” both having benefitted from his ever present talent) to playing in clubs with his own band. And always with a big smile on his face as soon as the guitar roars in, waiting to reply with his Hammond.
