Heavy metal band from Canada, Orleans, Ontario (1983 - 1986). Started as The Teasers in 1980 before changing its name.The group Tzar was formed in the early 1980's , this group was a family affair : Peter Tahan was the lead singer,bass player and songwriter of the group , Frank Tahan was the leader and vocalist and guitar player, he also wrote 3 songs on the album.John Tahan was the ever so versatile and hot guitar player writing all the lead material on the album, John was also doing vocals, Guy Morin was named the (animal) because of his hard hitting style on the drums.The group split up in the late 1980's to pursue other endeavours and single careers in the music business.Today Peter Tahan works at Bell Canada and still has a part time group and writes more up to date material. John and Frank Tahan opened computer stores and are still active in the music business writing songs and playing music from time to time. Last we heard of Guy Morin he was a truck driver for purolator.We like to thank all of our fans that have supported us through the years and our family and a special thanks to our mother Christiane Tahan who passed away on November 1st 2003 of Pulmonary Hypertension. God bless you mother.The Tahan brothers are still active in the music business and a reunion is in the works.
The band THE TEASERS and later TZAR has always been a family affair, made up of three brothers, Frank Tahan, the eldest founder/leader; middle brother John; and Peter the youngest along with a high school friend, Guy Morin, the drummer and multi-talented musician who also hails from Orleans, Ontario. The family home of the boy’s parents, Henri and Christiane Tahan out of Orleans, Ontario, Queenswood Heights, was home base for the band, it was also their rehearsal studio, a gathering area for fans and friends who would revolve through the open-door concept of a family home. Without this open-door style by Henri and Christiane Tahan, TZAR would not have existed.The Tahan family, originally from Montreal moved to Hull, Quebec spending a few years there, then rooting in Orleans, Ontario, a french speaking suburb of Ottawa, in the mid 70's. A piano in the living room, a record player, guitars in the basement owned by Frank Tahan, household music was eclectic, from Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Edith Piaf, Beatles, Elvis, Johnny Winter, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the RCA living room record player played everything. the boys would often setup their gear on the front lawn, getting their first exposure playing to crowds, friends, and neighbours.It was in Orleans, Ontario that the first nuances of Tzar developed. The three brothers created their first band, Paul Andre Cyr a high school friend of Peter was actually the very first drummer, SLYCK, with a retro / rockabilly style and then THE TEASERS, a genre New Wave band. Initially the support musicians, bassists, and drummers constantly changed. In 1981 saw the arrival of multi talented Guy Morlin on drums, a Garneau friend of Peter Tahan. Bassist at the time was the cousin of the three brothers, the very talented Gilbert Rostand of Brossard/Montreal, Quebec who had moved in with The Tahan Family to be bassist in the band THE TEASERS. The first compositions, original material were born, New Wave at the time, the group performed in the Outaouais/Ottawa regions.In early 1981 THE TEASERS, recorded a first promo demo tape at 10th Line Productions Studio on Amiens Street, Queenswood Heights, Orleans, Ontario, owned and operated by Bill Griffiths. The demo included original and cover material in the New Wave genre.A first 45 was released, with their first indie hit 'Love Me Like You Did Last Night' b/w 'I Love You', recorded at Studio Marc in East Ottawa's Industrial Park. The band performed on local radio stations, local TV shows, a sell out show at the Bob Guertin arena in Hull, Quebec, opening shows for Harlequin at Ottawa and Carleton Universities in Ottawa - the seed is planted!The following year, the band changed their name to Tzar.

The band was made up from 3 brothers, Frank Tahan (the eldest/founder), John, Peter (the youngest) and a high school friend Guy Morin, being the first drummer of the band. Their location was on Ontario Canada, in a French speaking suburb and after some lineup changes the 3 brothers recorded their first attempt in late 1981. But these were just the baby steps for the band as Tzar were actually active (and in a pro state) in the brief period from 1983 to 1986. Their one and only LP entitled ‘Players Of The Game’ with the ultra cult front cover was one of the most an expensive and highly collectable item for all the 80’s collectors.The album was originally printed in 1985 when poser/glam was at its best and thrash metal was dominating everything on the underground and was becoming the next big thing. Musically speaking we can hear a lot of primal Motley Crue (‘Don’t Try to Love’, ‘Heavy Metal Queen’) here and there and the passion that ‘Too Fast for Love’ had. It’s not only the vocal’s approaching. The guitar tuning, the production, the backing vocals, the lyrics… everything remind me of the Crue’s debut. And I don’t say that in a bad way. You can hear also some Scorpions elements (‘Born to Rock’) or L.A. Guns (‘Missing You’), as Tzar were seeking for a hit in order to make the breakthrough. The potential of the band’s members are obviously audible, while the compositions are fair enough (I personally liked ‘We’ve got the Right’ and ‘One Ticket to Paradise’) with catchy choruses and aggressive yet melodic sound. The guitar soloing reminds me of Randy Rhoads in a way but with more hard rock than metal feeling of course. Are we dealing with a masterpiece or a forgotten gem ? I wouldn’t say so (unless you are a 100% hard rock poser fanatic), but it is a really nice effort that may cost a lot in past years -as many were selling its few copies for a small fortune- but now Lost Realms is offering the album in a logical price in a limited edition of 500 copies, with the complete ‘Players Of The Game’ album, remastered from the best analog sources available, plus a 16-page booklet with song lyrics, rare photos and official biography written by Peter ‘Le Grand’ Tahan.
