Heavy Metal band from Sweden! New album Gods Of Terror out soon!This band started as a solo project in 2014 with Mattias only, and his friend Andreas who has played with him in several bands. Ronny owns the studio that they did this work at.

Sweden has long been a hotbed for kickass metal of all genres. Looking to continue that trend, Raging Fate are a new heavy metal band who combine speed and power, two things heavy metal enjoys the heck out of, both individually and in combination. These guys have both and they execute the speed/power combo pretty well for a new band. Gods of Terror is their high-octane debut album, released through Stormspell Records.There are a bunch of really solid riffs on this album and there are even a few great riffs. Mattias and Andreas do a real nice job of bringing out heavy, powerful riffs. The guitar tone is relatively thick, especially for this style of metal, which adds power to the riffs. The problem is that they cannot seem to decide on a consistent tempo for these songs. “Trapped in the Lie” starts out with fantastic riffing but it slows down very quickly and only sort of recovers halfway through. It feels like Raging Fate are trying to be both fast and heavy but they did not fully commit to playing that way for the entire album. The title track and “Reign of Evil” are the only songs that stay in high gear the entire time. The style shows up in spurts at other points during the album but not consistently. The first three tracks have great riffs and a solid, consistent tempo but then “Shores in Flames” fails to get out of second gear for seven whole minutes. The guitar melodies are decent but nothing new and the solos are good but they are often too short and there are not that many of them.The bass is occasionally audible and when it is, there are some decent lines but nothing spectacular. Ronny’s drumming on the other hand is somewhat of a glaring weakness. He is a competent drummer for the most part but he rarely shows any kind of proficiency and does not offer much variety. His best performance is on the title track but even that is too simplistic and mechanical. Hit the drum, bash the drum, bash the next drum, do a rim drum effect, rinse and repeat. That seems to be his formula and it is made worse by being so high in the mix. When he is on, he is actually a decent fit for Raging Fate but he does not bring the necessary energy to certain songs. In fairness, the riffs on those songs are not doing him any favors on the energy score but the way he propels “Tombstone” is brilliant. It would have been nice to hear some of that energy on “Shores in Flames,” which completely kills the momentum built up by the first three tracks. Yes, it is a slower, heavier track and the riffs lack any sort of variety but that gives you an opportunity to do something creative to keep the listener on their toes and impress them. Ronny just sticks to his simple formula and along with the slow riffs, saps a good deal of the song’s energy.Mattias’ vocals are a sticking point. He does not showcase much range but his mid-range vocals are pretty good and he should honestly just stick with those. He does have a lower, gruffer register that he uses on “Evilization” but it does not sound nearly as good as his cleaner, mid-range vocals. It fits the whole “evil” theme but it is just not as effective as the makeshift “growl” he uses on a track like “A Bitter Man’s Fate.” Sometimes, Mattias’ vocals drive the song really well and other times they seem to lack enough power to really take a song to the next level. His lyrics are pretty good though, covering a decent range of topics from evil and terror to death and vampirism without ever sounding old hat or pretentious.Honestly, this is a good album and Raging Fate certainly show potential. They are not quite the consistently attention-hooking band they could and should be at this point though. Raging Fate grabs your attention with this debut but they have trouble keeping it for the duration of the album. There are some glaring flaws on this album but it is only a debut so there is plenty of time for them to address those. Keep an eye on this band in the next few years though because once they figure out how to take their sound to the next level, they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come!
