Bio:

It began in the middle of 2002 when Volker wrote the instrumental "Shade Of The Dragon". Shortly thereafter, together with Martin, the idea was born to found a progressive instrumental project. By the end of the year "Mystrious Seasons" emerged as another piece. Soon, however, both musicians found that their songs, contrary to the original idea, lacked a voice, which would certainly enhance the whole thing. It was agreed, however, that a female voice should complete the project. In November 2003 Drummer Andreas Christ joined the two. His longtime experience as a musician will be an enrichment for the project "Emerald Edge". The search for a singer was difficult, however, because you had a very precise idea of the voice. Finally, four months later, Tanja Maul was chosen as a singer. They immediately began arranging the existing material in a vocal manner, whereby "Mysterious Seasons" remained an instrumental. This was followed by "Under Control" and "Terrify", before the first photo session on the Moyland Castle took place in April 2004. At the same time the concept idea for the first demo was born. The story of an addicted person on the way through their dependency should be told. The title song was given on time to its first public appearance at the end of May. In addition, the Demo-Single Under Control was released as a small pre-taste in an edition of 100 CDs. Already after their second appearance at "Rock am Ding" they were already sold out. In the course of the summer the band recorded their first demo with the songs Under Control, Terrify, A Crack In The Mirror, Mysterious Seasons, Shade of The Dragon and The Mirror Speaks, which was released on October 31, 2004 as part of a Halloween show.In the next year and a half, the band will play another 15 concerts, among others. At Emergenza, where they made it to the local finals and in the preliminary program of Xandria. Another highlight is the bus tour organized by the band with 40 fans to the Emergenza final in Cologne on 10.7.2005. At the end of 2005 Alessio Nocita finally finds the long sought-after keyboardist. With it, the musicians are now opening up further possibilities to design their music. In March 2006 Tanja leaves the band after 2 years because of musical differences. The performance on April 30, 2006 at the Emergenza Finale Ruhrgebiet in the Dortmunder Livestation was the last with her as a voice. The band filmed this performance and released on the DVD "Livestation". The DVD documents the last 2 years with Tanja as a singer and will be released on the day exactly 2 years after "The Mirror Speaks" also on Halloween during a concert. Since the musicians had not yet found a new voice at the time, they invited the singers Alice Aschauer and Ralf Grah, as well as the singer Sabrina Kretschmann, to join them this evening. The search for a new singer had proved very difficult, so the four remaining musicians did not want to exclude a male voice. Shortly after the concert, Alice Aschauer becomes the new singer of Emerald Edge. His powerful and versatile voice, as well as his enormous stage presence, give the songs a whole new note. The band officially presents it to fans at the concert in Cologne's All Area discothek. A new chapter begins for Emerald Edge. The five musicians are now working intensively on new songs for their next album and is releasing parts from the album "The Mirror Speaks". At the end of 2007, the single "Lost (Chapter I)" will be released, including "Therapy Of Illusions" and "Terrify".In June 2008 the recording of the second album "By The Light Of The Dark Star" begins. The five musicians are supported by Markus Frehn (C-Fiction). A total of 6 pieces are played, with "Menace From The Innercore" being almost 30 minutes long. The recording sessions take place until summer 2009. The 5 musicians perform separately at concerts, but one wants to concentrate fully on the recordings, which is why the stage has to wait a little longer. At the beginning of the mixing sessions in September 2009, the paths of Andreas Christ and Emerald Edge are separated after 6 years.Down into the future.Almost three months later, Artur Wlossek takes the chair behind the drums. Through him, completely new influences come into the band and one begins immediately to write a new song "Lost (Chapter II)" and rework the old material. In October 2010 Artur made his live debut as drummer in the Düsseldorf AK47. Here, the musicians also present new material. There will also be the decision to continue working on new material and the release of "By The Light Of The Dark Star"

Album:

It has happened a lot with Emerald Edge since their first album "The Mirror Speaks" from 2005. For reasons unknown to me, however, "By the Light of the Dark Star" (from 2013) in the 2017 current information to "Surreal" as The first album of Emerald Edge. The Mirror Speaks is a new version of the game. Only two members (Martin Wendler - bass, didgeridoo, backing vocals) and Volker Faas (guitars) remained from then on. The two are also the ones who had the idea of founding a band like Emerald Edge in 2002 to realize their numerous inspirations, including Dream Theater, Rush, Marillion, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd and Metallica. The band has meanwhile grown from the quartet to the quintet, which is based on the full-time keyboardist Robert Köhler. A singer had to give way to a very changeable singer named Alice Aschauer, who brought an additional color into the game with his violin playing. (How often do you get tempered Progmetal with violin solos?) "Surreal" offers such a chance, but also in lyrical passages without metal, Aschauer can draw attention to his violin playing).Aschau's tone of voice reminds me of James LaBrie at times. The new percussionist (compared to the first album) is called Artur Wlossek and fulfills his role as a driving and technically savvy musician. Double-bassdrum thunder included as soon as it appears appropriate. In addition to clean vocals, there are always growl-like voices, but they should not frighten any friend of the melodic metal. The occasional growls and the sporadic cineastic arrangements I consider to be the features of the Gothic Rock, which at the moment are an important part of the wide sound palette at Emerald Edge. The artwork is more likely to be a gothic rock formation than on predominantly melodic progmetal close. For the album, I consider the hard and at the same time creative guitar riffs, which are accompanied by organ, synthesizer, sitar or violin sounds. The melody of the vocal lines reminds us in the harsher passages before the colleagues of Dream Theater, Vanden Plas, or Queensryche. In the middle of the hard progmetal contrasting arrangements are interspersed for maximum variety (and for my pleasure), such as those with strings, spinet, acoustic guitars and electronic rhythms. The comparatively original transitions alternate with those which had already been so similar to various metal and progmetal formations. But even in the more strongly orientated moments of the Metal tradition, the music of Emerald Edge does not look hackneyed. The first part of "Be Careful on the Secret Path", in which the epic Progmetal intro of violins and didgeridoo sounds is thrown out, shows how interesting Emerald Edge can arrange. Very enjoyable, as in the first-class title the synthesizers get a equal place next to the rocking guitar. If someone had to judge the band because of the balladesk-acoustic first part of "Power & Love", he could easily tap onto a Neoprog formation because of the sudden theatrical singing of Aschauer. The piece is framed by classical tuned harp melodies."House of Cards" begins symphonically and theatrically, as one would expect from a Gothic musical, until shortly afterwards the hard guitar reefs lead again to the "classical" progmetal. The interesting thing about "Surreal" is for me the fact that the listener under the line is offered a boring kind of the progmetal, which regularly presents with surprising arrangement ideas and unexpected turns.
