Bio:

Mystery (stylized as MYSTERY) is a Canadian progressive rock band formed in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Michel St-Père. Mystery's current line-up is St-Père and singer Jean Pageau, with touring musicians Benoît Dupuis, François Fournier, Sylvain Moineau and Jean-Sébastien Goyette. The group has been together for twenty years, but there's two clear phases in the band's history; the 90s with original singer Gary Savoie, and their new millennium Neo Prog era with vocalist Benoit David (in YES as well). The album posted here was a retrospective of the early years, now Mystery is presenting "Unveil The Mystery", covering the recent period starting in 2007.Mystery's progressive style is strongly impregnated by Melodic Rock / AOR waves, turning more 'easy', neo-prog with the material included into this CD.Ever the years, the band leaded by talented guitarist and composed Michel St-Pere has evolved from melodies inspied by Styx and Asia to more adventurous neo prog like that of Rush, Saga and even Journey, but featuring delicate acoustic passages not normally heard from these two.Mystery won't dazzle you with technical prowess but you will appreciate their strong melodies, elegant arrangements and attention to detail. And we have the velvety vocals of Benoit David. In 2008 David became the lead singer of Yes (as well as Mystery) filling in for Jon Anderson. This helped the band reach a wider audience. Not in vain Yes chosen Benoit David as vocalist, he steals the show here on many of the songs. There's not a single weak song on this disc, always interesting and propelled by heavenly melodies. One of my favorites is the prog pageantry of "Pride". The piece runs the gamut from reflective to rocking enhanced with soaring guitar leads throughout."Dear Someone" is expansive and expressive with engaging changes and strong solos. "Time Goes By" is stark at first then builds up to the catchy hook and continues to ebb and flow in its sentiments and speeds.Musically, Mystery is an incredibly very well balanced band that can be enjoyed by any audience. There's something for everyone here; elegance, hooks, beautiful acoustic passages and excellent vocals."Unveil The Mystery" is a proper compendium of one of the most underrated and ignored Melodic Neo Prog bands from Canada (perhaps because they are from the 'French side' of the country). The ideal way to discover the music and passion of Mystery. With a new album gaining rave reviews it was agreed to assemble a live band consisting of both David and St-Père along with touring members Benoît Dupuis (keyboards), François Fournier (bass guitars), Sylvain Moineau (guitars) and Jean-Sébastien Goyette (drums). With a touring band in place, 2013 would prove to be a year of much travel with Mystery performing live monthly and for the first time outside of Canada. Concert dates took them to Mexico, the Netherlands and the UK. There is an old adage that says, “That which doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger,” and certainly that would apply to Mystery. Their past may have been full of personnel upheaval and sadness and yet out of all that turmoil Mystery have evolved into one of the symphonic progressive rock genres leading bands. They have gone from strength to strength and continue to gain fans around the world with their classic sound and yet as they enter their 28th year of existence they still have much to prove and more music to write. Clearly the story is far from over.

Album:

Delusion Rain is the sixth studio album by the Canadian rock band Mystery, released in November 2015 on Unicorn Digital. The album features a new studio lineup for the band, with guitarist and keyboardist Michel St-Père, keyboardist Benoît Dupuis, bassist François Fournier, guitarist Sylvain Moineau, drummer Jean-Sébastien Goyette, and singer Jean Pageau. The album also features two guest musicians: Antoine Michaud on guitars who played guitars for Mystery during their 2014 tour and Sylvain Descoteaux who is a member of Huis. The cover art for the album was created by photographer Leszek Bujnowski, who also created the artwork for The World is a Game and Tales from the Netherlands, and is entitled Delusion Rain. One of the favorite Neo Prog bands of this blog, Canadians MYSTERY, will release their new album "Delusion Rain" next November 13, the first with vocalist Jean Pageau.Known for the exquisite vocals of Benoit David - who also was in Yes at the same time - after his departure in good terms with the rest of the band, he is being replaced by Pageau, another great find by Mystery.Again produced by mastermind, founder, guitarist and keyboard player Michel St-Père, "Delusion Rain" is a wonderful album that continues to showcase Mystery's outstanding musical abilities. St-Pere is truly a talented and gifted artist who continues to develop lush, deep and layered arrangements. For those unaware of Mystery's music, the band perform a mix of intelligent and tasteful AOR with careful progressive rock flavours, preferring to focus on well-written song structures with strong melodies. Most of the proggier instrumental flourishes are tightly incorporated around the songs, very rarely self-indulgent or trying to show off, and never at the expense of the overall tune. "Delusion Rain" is perhaps more progressive than the previous album, the songs are longer but as happens with quality Neo Prog bands, all flow easily thanks to the sweet and accessible melodies, something like 'songs into songs'.You have almost 3 songs inside opener title track "Delusion Rain", four parts in the excellent "The Willow Tree" and an exercise of gusto in closer "A Song for You".As usual, Mystery not only delivers top class music, but also some thought provoking lyrics; just check "Wall Street King".New singer Jean Pageau has brought a really nice fresh dimension to Mystery, as his vocals, still really melodius, have a slightly more 'Rock' approach. If you like beautifully crafted songs that display a ridiculously high standard of musicianship, then this is for you. If you like soaring guitars with solos akin to the likes of '80s David Gilmour which make the hairs on your back stand up, then this is for you. If you like proggy AOR ballads, then this is the best you will find. Add to all this some classic waves in the style of Marillion, '80s Yes, Rush, Saga, etc.You can't go wrong with Canadians Mystery, and the band has won me over again with "Delusion Rain". This new record is a pure delight: elegant, intense at places, always melodic. "Delusion Rain" is true Neo Prog; progressive arrangements with real sense, adorned with AOR / rock&pop sensibility, precise instrumentation and pristine production. Catch Mystery on tour all over Europe right now, you will thank me for the advise later.
