For Dushan Petrossi it does matter whether a song is impressive because of the technical virtuosity of the instrumentalist or whether it also has a memorable tune suitable for normal music-lovers. "My compositions are always based on melodies you will remember. The listener should be able to keep the melody in mind, should be able to hum it and not be overpowered by the instrumentation." The interesting thing about this statement is the fact that Petrossi has the reputation of being an excellent guitarist, often described by the music press as being the legitimate heir to the Yngwie Malmsteen throne. But as we already said, for the guitar genius, there is more to a composition than ego manic self-importance. And it is just this that he proves on the second album "Metallic Tragedy" of his band Magic Kingdom, the appearance of which marks five years since the bands suitably named debut work "The Arrival". It was five years in which Petrossi and Co. had to conquer numerous setbacks, which however did nothing to dampen the energy and overflowing cauldron of ideas of "Metallic Tragedy". Besides his activities for Magic Kingdom, Petrossi - when time permits - also works on his solo project, Iron Mask. His priority lies, however, with the band, which is wholly made up of excellent musicians. Singer Max Leclerq is from France. Magic Kingdom is his first professional band, which allows him to develop his talent as well as his fascinating voice. Bass player Vassili Moltchanov already played on the band's debut album, whilst drummer Anton Arkhipov (formerly Exhumator) and keyboarder Aymeric Ribot are new members in the band. "It was not easy finding suitable musicians with the required technical skills and the ability of integrating into the band," says Petrossi. "It was especially difficult to find a keyboarder, but we found the perfect person in Aymeric." At this point we should also mention the guest vocalist, Oliver Hartmann. The former frontman of the German Melodic Metal band At Vance is brilliant during two lead vocals spots (´Flying Pyramids` and ´Master Of Madness`) and also did all the choir parts and background vocals on the album. "I was always a great fan of his voice," Petrossi admits. "So when he left At Vance I contacted him and asked him whether he would like to help us out. I am really thrilled with his work on the album".The band's style can be best described as ´Symphonic Power Speed Metal`. Yet there are definite differences between Magic Kingdom and the general clichees of this genre. "What separates us from other bands of this style is the aggressivity of our songs. We don't just always play an exclusively melodic style. We insert harder passages into our songs. Other bands don't like to do that because they're afraid of frightening away fans with aggressive parts. We like to experiment. My primary criteria is originality so it's not important for me whether a song turns out to be of an epic size, or whether it's short." And exactly these criteria are filled on "Metallic Tragedy". The title track, for example, touches the very borders of the genre in view of both its length and its style. The 13 minute long track is epic and theatrical, has five very different vocal moods, from dark and heavy to soprano and baritone, and can be described as a Metal mini-opera. "I think this song is progressive in the true meaning of the word. It doesn't have just one mood, but many, from low to high, all very different from each other." The overall concept of Magic Kingdom also includes, short, straight tracks, because the overall concept is not permitted to bow down to any limitations. What is permitted, is to do what pleases the band and what the character of the song demands. In keeping with this, Petrossi can lean on his personal favourites and preferences. "As a young musician I was primarily interested in Melodic Metal, then Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen and Gary Moore were added to my list, but I was always fascinated by history's great composers such as Bach and Vivaldi. I adore baroque music, but not Renaissance much. My aim as a guitarist and composer is to create a new, exclusive sound of my own, based on all these influences. The cover artwork of this album is from no lesser artist than Leo Hao, who, in the past, has worked for bands such as Iced Earth and Blind Guardian.

Album:

One of my favourite bands, one of my favourite band names, and one of the hardest bands to Google (just try it; you get a whole bunch of Disney shit!) have a new album. It’s like an event for me! The mastermind behind the Magic Kingdom name – guitar wizard Dushan Petrossi – is usually far more active with his other outfit: Iron Mask. Due to this, Magic Kingdom albums are the rarer of the two, despite being the older project. The Belgian guitarist’s style is so instantly recognizable that any fan would know exactly what to expect when approaching MetAlmighty. However, the last three MK albums have all been of such a high standard, especially 2015’s Savage Requiem, that this new record is initially disappointing. Only initially mind you; it grows and it does kick a very specific amount of ass. But I need to just address some hitches preventing a great album from being elevated to ‘phenomenal’.From the exterior, everything seems to be right on the money. The pun-tastic album title has me in stitches and the OTT artwork is utterly spectacular. The song-titles, too, add a basting of excitement by being exactly what you want from a symphonic power metal album: “Unleash The Dragon”, “Rise From The Ashes, Demon!” and my personal favourite: “In The Den Of The Mountain Trolls”. Good, wholesome, cheesy fun! For the most part, that’s what MetAlmighty delivers. However, this record falls down on its production quality. M.K. albums are always slightly raw and rough; it’s what gives them unique character – but here, the mix is very uneven. Vocals are too quiet (a shame, because newcomer Michael Vescera does an admirable job), and the bass is far too loud (something I never thought I’d say about an album of this genre!). I even had to blow the cobwebs off the ‘bass reduction’ feature on my CD player!That said – this is, for sure, the heaviest the Belgians have ever sounded, and they’re sure to drop in a few hefty riffs here and there to remind us. I’ve always loved Petrossi’s tendency to occasionally break out into open E-string chugging heaviness, and it would be appreciated if there were more moments such as these on MetAlmighty. I am mildly disappointed that Petrossi still hasn’t flirted with black/death metal vocals since 2010’s Symphony Of War as they added another intriguing dimension to the music. But, in fairness, this new record has its own original features to boast. The star of the show is undoubtedly drummer Michael Brush, whose off-kilter hi-hat rhythms and never-tiring double-kick attack are both tireless and unique. In places, the percussion actually steals the show, especially when the speed is cranked up like in the title-track. It also goes without saying that Petrossi’s solos are second-to-none fantastic – again, especially on the title-track.“Unleash The Dragon” was an admirable choice to open the album. With 3 minutes of introductory, high-speed, neoclassical riffage before any vocals are even heard, and its oddly mellow chorus, it’s a bold move which pays off and establishes this record’s timbre. On the other end, however, “King Without A Crown” is a poor finale. A decent power metal track by itself, but it whimpers to a close and lacks the impact to finish the record satisfactorily. The Belgians would’ve been better off swapping it with the blistering “Dark Night, Dark Thoughts”: a cracking speedster with a majestic chorus and some truly intricate fretwork – for sure my favourite cut on the disc. Almost as awesome is the anthemic “Temple Of No Gods” which contains a chorus that would make Olaf Hayer wish he was still wielding the mic.The two singles, “Fear My Fury” and “Wizards & Witches” are what old fans of the band will latch on to. Typically brilliant Magic Kingdom fare, especially the former. The unfortunate duds on MetAlmighty are the strangely subdued “In The Den Of The Mountain Trolls” (enjoyable but lacking in texture), and the insanely boring “Just A Good Man”. The latter might be the worst ballad of the year; a shame, considering how good previous ballads such as “Another Sun” were. I’m aware there has been a fair amount of complaining in this review, but I promise it’s a labour of love. I adore this project and all it stands for. MetAlmighty is a flawed but great symphonic power metal album that has its emphasis heavily on the ‘metal’ side. I hope fans of the genre lap this up because Dushan Petrossi is one of the hardest working men in power metal and never delivers an underwhelming product. Unleash the dragon!!

It is the first time Dushan Petrossi wrote a concept album for MAGIC KINGDOM. Its songs and album structure were written according to the story, which had to follow the chapters, like in a book or a movie, in 12 different sections. He always focused on very strong catchy choruses and developed a full story with everything being related to and linked with each other. The fullest potential is reached in the song "The Great Retribution", which sees the return of the opera singers (soprano and baritone/tenor) and death/black screams together with the traditional metal voice of the band's vocalist Michael Vescera.Still, this album is full of surprises! The band took their time to mix and master everything to make sure that everything sounds perfect, and to get the punch and the sophistication of classical, clever arranged, music with the power of the best aggressive and melodic metal just right.MAGIC KINGDOM take you on a journey through a magical realm and an epic fantasy world, full of legends and myths, that will speak right to your heart.Story-wise, the damned souls, locked between heaven and the deepest hell, started a rebellion and came back to earth, led by their doomed king, to start an invasion of the Magic Kingdom.Characters from previous MAGIC KINGDOM songs return: The angel (soprano), the knight (melodic metal voice), the demon (death grunts), the witch (black metal screams) and the King of Ghosts (tenor/baritone).Sadness is expressed in the song "Frozen Realm Of Death", which depicts how the realm has changed after the invasion. "Unholy War Alliance", on the other side, expresses the rage of power and war, and tells the story of how the Magic Kingdom and Hell had to agree on an alliance with each other to fight against the army of ghosts and the undead together.The song "The Great Retribution" stands for a time for vengeance, and for kicking out the invaders. It's a song that will sonically bring you to a world of epic wars, a fight for the good and light against the evil and darkness.
