Bio:

LOST IN GREY was founded back in 2013 and is now ready to enter the spotlight. The Finnish sextet around front man Harri Koskela is inspired by symphonic and folk Metal, but also by film soundtracks and the beautiful nature in Northern Finland.LOST IN GREY will release their debut album "THE GREY REALMS" via NoiseArt Records in March 3rd, 2017. The album consists of high-quality compositions that cannot be beaten in terms of dramaturgy. Therefore the story of "THE GREY REALMS” is as important as the music itself. Divided into three chapters, not unlike the classical stage play, LOST IN GREY knit a complex story about Lillian, a woman trying to escape the cruelty in the world and getting to a paradise-like place, The Grey Realms.Telling the story, Harri Koskela (also keyboard), Emily Leone (also violin) and lyricist Anne Lill Rajala play the characters within the story and bring a very own touch to it through their diverse voice talents. Witness the unbelievable talent of each and every one band member in three acts, making this extraordinary debut album a diverse and at the same time unique experience.

Album:

“Another year, another Nightwishcore release,” one is tempted to think at the sight of Lost in Grey. At this point, I’d be mighty tempted to make a template review and merely swap names and album titles out for the most homogeneous sound in the business. Efficient reviewing for 2019! Or it would be, if Lost in Grey had not unleashed the first major musical upset in my worldview of the year with their sophomore album The Waste Land: it attempts something different with the style! Every time I’ve been saddled with Nightwishcore, this has been my exact wish. But was that wish fulfilled by an evil djinn or a fairy godmother1?Be aware, at its core this is still part of the female-fronted symphonic power-gothic train that carried hundreds of copycat bands before. Quasi-operatic soprano, twinkling keyboards, and violins take the fore, power-chord riffs and bass go in the back. But Lost in Grey bash against the boundaries of that label in every direction. The vocals don’t stop at operatic female vocals; anything ranging from biting female heavy metal vocals to a bass choir to a children’s choir to spoken word to black metal rasps feature in the gallery. While the pacing can usually be expected to remain firmly middle of the road, several tracks like the opener and highlight “Unohdukseen Katoaa” crank up the dial, the latter actually toying with black metal blast beats.Even beyond this twisting and turning of the dials, the range of songwriting here is huge. While “Far Beyond and Further” and “Expectations” stick more closely to the usual formula, the idea of what to expect in female fronted symphonic metal is upended more often than not. “Wolves Among Men” is a highly entertaining and extravagant piece of theater, almost Broadway musical-like in its narrative vocalizations from a villainous perspective. “Prelude for Emptiness” is a pure folk interlude, “1992”2 a grandiose choir-driven ballad. From the first moment to the last, the band pulls out all the stops, making for an album that, if nothing else, never gets boring. Cheesy, yes, and unabashedly so; that’s nearly impossible to avoid with anything symphonic, triply so when a song includes a straight-faced spoken word interlude about space and the environment. But never boring. But the more balls you juggle, the harder it becomes not to drop some, and balls do fall. Despite being a concept album, the songs are not a unified whole, a consequence of the band’s relentless thirst for creative versatility. That same thirst leads to a few less advisable moments, most prominently the overlong finale that doesn’t have the hooks or chops to stick the landing. And finally, once again as with so many of its direct peers, the production is not up to snuff. I don’t know what gets into the heads of symphonic bands, but despite the fact that hardly anything is recorded as flawlessly as classical music, a brickwalled production is the sad norm for the genre and this is no exception (albeit less egregious than, for example, Akoma.) Considering the slew of guest artists playing various peripheral classic instruments, this album deserved a more restrained production. This does not take away from the fact that The Waste Lands is, by some margin, the most original, most versatile, and simply the best female-fronted symphonic album I have reviewed. Though hampered by some of the Nightwishcore trappings, dense production chief among them, the sheer scope of the music on display ensures the entertainment value survives unscathed. Lost in Grey shot for the moon and left a neat crater, and for the first time in the genre, I’m excited to find out just how much further they can go.

Album:

When you create a bombastic, theatrical brand of symphonic metal, prepare to launch a massive undertaking that leaves no stone unturned in any department. With inspiration coming from literature, philosophy, the world itself, as well as numerous musical genre styles (across the broad metal spectrum to beyond the borders), Lost in Grey is a seven-piece act from Finland who have released three previous full lengths since their inception a decade ago. After being with Reaper Entertainment for two albums, Odyssey Into the Grey as the fourth studio record sees the group move to El Puerto Records – continuing the path of pulling influences across multiple sources in the hopes of listeners transporting themselves on this fine journey of adventure to glory.Grandiose movements are a staple of the sound – larger than life theatrical elements to create this array of colors on all fronts. Orchestration meeting choirs next to the normal bass, drums, guitars and dual clean to extreme vocal presence – as a listener you have so much that intoxicates, moving you in multiple ways track by track, the shifts create this atmosphere where all senses align in this meditative, alternative universe situation. The triple threat vocals of keyboardist Harri Koskela, violinist Emily Leone, and singer Anne Lill allows the group to color every track in distinctive, alluring shapes – handling everything from narrative to growl nuances, beyond the normal clean, mid-range to higher gothic or symphonic/operatic melodies. Contrasts fuel anticipation – blackened tremolo riffs next to blast beats while choirs create the circular hooks during “Time” while the follow-up “Two Wolves” could almost be set in a Nordic winter picturesque scene, the chants, folk meets keyboard/orchestral motion next to serene narrative, soothing words ideal in its middle of the album sequencing. It’s rare to hear a band effortlessly combine aspects of Therion, Nightwish, Epica, and Fleshgod Apocalypse while also taking into account movie soundtrack composers, folk, and new age textures into their songwriting, but that’s what you’ll hear throughout these eight tracks.Thankfully the flourishes of electric guitars and propulsive drumming appear in all the right spots – because often this is a style of metal where the symphonic components could overshadow the natural heavy elements. A children’s choir supplements the Finnish sung “Vem kan segla fooerutan vind”, thunderous in spaces while thoughtful in its pacing over the course of its 7:09 playback, the guitar work of Miika Haavisto and Jarno Suodenjoki mesmerizes while Emily’s violin break adds that classical tension. Packing a lot into these longer arrangements, fear sets in that you could be overwhelmed by all that’s here to process – yet main songwriter keyboardist Harri Koskela executes his ideas in a balanced fashion to ensure maximum earworms beyond the sophistication – the mammoth, eleven-minute title cut a perfect example through its Viking meets symphonic measures with ABBA-like melodies, a driving main riff as well as a middle instrumental sequence to cast your mind into spacious tranquility.Odyssey Into the Grey showcases Lost in Grey in the highest watershed moment of their career. An ambitious undertaking should pay long-term dividends, especially to those who live for musicians who take the wide lens, far reaching approach to this genre.
