Bio:

It’s astonishing to realise that DragonForce now have a history going back 15 years, and that they’re about to release their sixth album. But such is the pace at which music and life move these days that what was seemingly a highly promising young British metal band just yesterday are now an established full force (ahem) on the scene. In fact, their reputation is such that anything new from this lot is regarded as a landmark moment in the ongoing story of metal. But the new DragonForce album is a revelation, one that will surely entice them to another level of achievement. It’s called “Maximum Overload,” and that’s precisely what you get from the 10 tracks on the main album, plus the five bonus songs for the special edition and a DVD. “We have our own style and sound,” says Herman Li, who founded the band in 1999 with fellow guitarist Sam Totman. “And we didn’t want to move away from that. Once you’ve got your trademark approach in place, that’s what fans come to expect from you. But we also wanted to challenge ourselves. We didn’t want to rehash what we’d done before, but take it all in a fresh direction.”So, for the first time in their history, DragonForce have worked with an outside producer. The man in question is the celebrated Jens Bogren, who has previously worked with Opeth, Katatonia, Devin Townsend and Paradise Lost, among many others.“We had thought about getting Jens to mix our 2008 album (“Ultra Beatdown”), so he was always in our minds. Sam and I have co-produced all our albums so far but the problem with that is it can be really hard to push yourself and the rest of the band. There’s always the temptation of going to the pub instead! This time around, we wanted a producer who’d really challenge us, and Jens was the perfect choice.”When you listen to “Maximum Overload,” you can hear the way DragonForce have matured, which has actually increased the intensity and power the band generate. What’s gone before – from 2003′s debut “Valley Of The Damned” through “Sonic Firestorm” (’04), “Inhuman Rampage” (’06), “Ultra Beatdown” (’08) and “The Power Within” (2012) – has laid impressive groundwork, but this is an album with a towering momentum.“Jens didn’t let us get away with anything. He was a slave driver, which is what we needed. He kept on pushing us to get the very best we could deliver. That was a good position to be in, because it meant whereas we might have settled in the past for one standard, this time we had someone outside the band insisting we could do it better.”So, what can we expect this time around from DragonForce? Li is unequivocal. “I’d say you can expect something heavier and also thrashier than we’ve been before. Yes, it is a different approach for us. But there’s still a lot of the trademark DragonForce style present. When people say their new album is ‘different’, it can mean virtually anything. But what we’ve avoided is drastic change, which nobody wants.” It’s about evolution not revolution. The album was recorded over a period of six months in various locations. “We did a lot of the sessions at Jens’ own studios (Fascination) in Orebro and Varberg, Sweden. We’d start about 8am and go all the way through to something like 6pm. We also worked at studios in the UK. And I even did some guitar solos on the yacht owned by Zoltan Bathory from Five Finger Death Punch! “Changing the environment for recording does help, because the different atmospheres can inspire you. We also took breaks at some points, which again was a great help to us. It allows you to stand back and objectively listen to what you’ve done so far, and you can sometimes hear the way you can improve on what’s already there.”There’s one guest on the album. Trivium’s Matt Heafy. “He does backing vocals on the songs ‘The Game’, ‘No More’ and ‘Defenders’. We’ve become friends with the Trivium guys from touring together through the years. On a few songs, we wanted to add a different mix of melodic to extreme vocals, and Matt had the perfect voice for it. When we approached Matt, he immediately agreed to do it.”Another first on the album is the fact that the band have done a cover, the song in question being Johnny Cash’s classic “Ring of Fire.” “That was Sam’s idea. And what we did was take the song and adapt it to the way we play. It’s not a hard song to learn, but it is a challenge to do it well. Will we do it live? We shall have to see…”The line-up that recorded this album is the same as the one responsible for “The Power Within,” which means vocalist Mark Hudson (who made his recording debut in 2012) has bedded more comfortably into the band, while Vadim Pruzhanov is on keyboards and Frederic Leclercq is on bass. Dave Mackintosh plays drums on the album but he has subsequently left the band, being replaced by Gee Anzalone, hailing from Turin, Italy, and a graduate of the NAMM Music Academy of Milan.“Dave just wants to do more progressive music, and that’s not a problem for us. He leaves on good terms, and even suggested we contact Gee to replace him. We’ve gone through this situation before, changing a member of the band after an album’s been done. And it’s never been tough for us to bring someone new at that stage, and I’m sure we’ll adapt this time with no problem.”With “Maximum Overload,” DragonForce haven’t so much reinvented themselves as reimagined their aspirations. The result is an album full of command, energy and vitality. It’s got strength in depth and breadth. Sophistication allied to an attention to detail that goes beyond what’s been done before.“Just repeating the same thing is a waste of everyone’s time. We all feel we’ve recorded something purposeful, for us and the fans.”

Album:

By this point, Frederic Leclerq (the bassist) was writing most of the songs, and he was evolving the sound of Dragonforce. They saw that his songs were more successful, so they pretty much gave him control of this album and told him to go for it, and he did just that. This album builds on the last one, and allows Marc a better chance to exercise his vocals, and even gives an occasional keyboard piece to Vadim, the most underappreciated member of Dragonforce. The main thing that sets this album apart is the heaviness. The songs are more thrash-y than previous Dragonforce records, since Fred was a pretty big fan of thrash metal, if it wasn't obvious by the fact that he left Dragonforce to join Kreator. If it wasn't obvious enough, Matt Heafy of Trivium is brought on for 3 songs, but frankly these songs aren't my favorites. The Game is the fastest Dragonforce song, and has some great lyrics about feeling hopeless and lost in life, but it doesn't exactly fit with a super-fast, headbanging thrash song, and Defenders is another prime example of this. Thankfully there's more than just these ones. Three Hammers has a good, triumphant sound, but it beat-switches into a thrash sound for the solo, before slowing down again for the ending, which in my opinion shows that Fred is good at balancing thrash metal with power metal. Some other songs that stand out: Tomorrow's Kings has some good keyboard bits, and it reminds me of Zelda, more so than the explicitly Zelda-themed song released by Dragonforce that couldn't actually mention Link or Zelda because Nintendo would sue them. Symphony Of The Night is a Castlevania-themed song that may have a keyboard bit, I can't tell. It was the first of many, but at this point they've done more than enough Castlevania songs, and Marc needs to find another game to make a song about. City Of Gold has some of the best lyrics, and a decent intro. But my favorite song on here is The Sun Is Dead. It gives off a vibe of a post-apocalyptic future, and the melodies on this one are incredible. There's even a bass solo on here that ties the song together, and an organ-sounding keyboard bit at the end.Unfortunately there are some problems with this album. One, the heavy direction they're leaning towards is a tad bit concerning, since Dragonforce isn't really a thrash band, and on the Matt Heafy songs, it seems like Fred is trying to make Dragonforce a thrash band, since he doesn't really like power metal. Fortunately, he left before the band went full-thrash, and messed up their whole sound. Two, the bonus edition songs would have fared much better on the standard track. Summer's End, the Japanese Track, should have replaced Extraction Zone, and You're Not Alone, the ballad, should have been on the normal album. The album is a good improvement from the last album. My biggest complaint about The Power Within was that nothing really stuck out. Most of the songs on here stick out, and have something unique that sets them apart.

Multi-national metal maestro’s DragonForce have announced the worldwide release of their debut DVD entitled “In the Line of Fire.” The release is scheduled for July 14th and features high definition footage shot during the band’s Ultimate Stage headline show at 2014′s Loud Park Festival in the Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo, the band used multiple camera angles to capture the raw energy of their show and instrumental dexterity for which they are rightly celebrated worldwide. In other news, a new contest has been launched on Revolver Magazine’s website! The contest features prizes including a signed, stage played Ibanez guitar from Herman Li, a signed drum head, t-shirts, and a most epic selection of gaming/PC gear from Razer! Razer Kraken Forged Edition headphones, Razer keyboards, and more are all being given away. Enter now and watch the video for “Three Hammers” at RevolverMag.com!The track listing below features a selection of new songs from the latest album “Maximum Overload” mixed in with foot stomping anthems and lightning fast shred-fests from previous releases.DragonForce are currently on the Maximum Overload World Tour, which commenced in September 2014 and is due to conclude in 2016. Throughout their six studio album and multiple world tour history DF have steadfastly refused to shoot a DVD, until now. Guitarist Herman Li explains, “We always held the opinion that if we ever did a DVD we wanted to do it properly. Now, having released six studio albums we thought we had a great cross section of material to pick from and we knew the facilities at Loud Park made it a great place to film a show. Everything just came together and we’re very pleased with the results and hope the fans will be also“.A snapshot of the DVD can be seen by checking out the just released second music video from ‘Maximum Overload‘; a storming version of ‘Three Hammers‘ which was shot at the same show!

Album:

DragonForce fans have reason to rejoice as the band will be in the spotlight quite a bit over the next year or so. It all begins with the release of a new greatest hits album titled Killer Elite – The Hits, The Highs, The Vids, which is on schedule for a July 22 street date via Spinefarm Records. The collection features 22 tracks that encompass two hours and 30 minutes of classic DragonForce material. In that collection, you’ll find three live songs — “Fields of Despair,” “Three Hammers” and “Starfire” — while three other tracks — “Black Fire,” “Valley of the Damned” and “Heart of a Dragon” — have all been remastered. The set also includes such favorites as “Through the Fire and Flames,” “The Last Journey Home” and “Seasons” among others. The full track listing can be seen below.Guitarist Herman Li says, “The aim of this release is to give a strong flavor of everything we’ve recorded so far, and I like to think it shows a lot of diversity. Certainly, we tried to make it as broad-based as possible. Since Marc [Hudson] joined the band (replacing original frontman ZP Theart), we’ve actually released some of our speediest songs and some our most melodic compositions, too. DragonForce isn’t just about the relentless tempos and the flashy solos; ultimately, it’s the feel of the music that counts…”The album will be available in multiple formats including one that comes with a DVD featuring all of the band’s videos. You can pre-order the effort through Amazon, iTunes and GooglePlay or wait until it hits stores on July 22.Meanwhile, as the Killer Elite hits set will keep the band in the spotlight this summer and throughout the remainder of the year, they’re currently working hard to keep the momentum going. The band has scheduled time to work on the follow-up to Maximum Overload with producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. Though an official release date has not been set, the band is said to be eyeing a mid-March 2017 street date with a world tour to follow.DragonForce also have a few dates scheduled as well as they’ll headline the ProgPower Festival in Atlanta on Sept. 7, followed by a special “up close and personal” show at Brooklyn’s St. Vitus on Sept. 10. At both shows, the band is expected to play a “best of” set, reflecting their Killer Elite album.

Album:

International metal superstars DragonForce have revealed details for their forthcoming, brand-new studio album. "Reaching Into Infinity" will be released on earMUSIC on May 19, 2017 on CD, LP, digital and Special Edition CD+DVD. Recording the bulk of the album at Fascination Street Studios (Sweden), with producer Jens Bogren, the band also laid down tracks while touring their “Killer Elite” best of album, utilising Lamerluser Studios, London UK; Dark Lane Studios, Witney UK, as well as the band's own Evil1 Studios in Charleville-Mézières France and Shredforce One Studios, CA USA. “We were flying out, playing a festival, then back into the studio, then back out again”, explains bass player Frédéric Leclercq, who also handled the majority of the songwriting on this album. "It was very intense and very tiring. I obviously played bass, but also a lot of rhythm guitar, electric and acoustic, and lost my temper a few times - I think we all did at some point, because we wanted to deliver nothing but the best." For their seventh studio album, DragonForce have opened up their sound like never before, capturing the fierce, forlorn and fun with both menace and melody. "I think we have proven that playing fast was something we were good at, so this time I wanted to bring even more diversity into our music", Fred continues. "It's great to challenge ourselves instead of staying in a comfort zone, and I really wanted to experiment with Marc’s vocals. I think people are going to be surprised at his brutality!" The first album to feature Gee Anzalone, the Italian drummer, has laid down an insanely impressive performance to provide the perfect backbone to the DragonForce sound, which of course still boasts the bands trademark crazy, fast solos, courtesy of guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman. The band will give fans their first taste of the new songs in a live setting at a very exclusive one-off show at Camden Town, London’s Black Heart venue, on April 12. Says guitarist Sam Totman: "This is going to be insane! We always like to kick things off with some intimate shows and this will be the smallest London show we've done since doing three consecutive weeks at The Barfly back in 2005. It's going to be a wild sweaty party!" “The title of the album explains pretty much what we are trying to do with our music”, Fred concludes. "Today's world is really crazy - there is fear of the future, uncertainty. But the power of music is infinite, and it can give strength and hope to people."

Album:

Originally released early 2012, the fifth album “The Power Within” by Dragonforce is back as “Re-Powered Within”, completely remastered, remixed and repowered. Prepared by Damien Rainaud (Fear Factory, Babymetal) at award-winning studio Mix Unlimited, Los Angeles, CA, the Dragonforce classic sounds bigger, better and bolder than ever before.
Says guitarist Herman Li: “I love how ‘Re-Powered Within’ has turned out. We remixed and remastered the original music with a more modern production, in the vein of our last two releases. The result is a clearer with a more powerful sound. The fans will get to hear the music in better detail, bringing out parts they couldn’t hear so well before and injecting new excitement into the songs we love even more now.”Combining bombshell hooklines with high speed guitar solos, “Re-Powered Within” contains signature anthems that have gained the band the grand reputation and praise that it is known for today. The new mix and mastering truly serves the album well as “Re-Powered Within” sounds as new and fresh as it never has. The album has also been given a new style with a completely adjusted artwork. Featuring astonishing vocals by then brand-new singer Marc Hudson as well as the divine guitar sound provided by Herman Li and Sam Totman, Dragonforce have and always will be a definite full force within the scene.

Album:

On September 27, DragonForce will unleash their 8th full-length album, "Extreme Power Metal", worldwide. Produced in Los Angeles, California by Damien Rainaud at Mix Unlimited, "Extreme Power Metal" was also recorded, in part, on guitarist Herman Li's livestream channel on Twitch with participation from the fans.Known as the fastest band in the world, Grammy-nominated extreme power metal band DragonForce is based in London, England. Their platinum-selling record "Through The Fire And Flames", brought them international acclaim and was featured as the most-challenging song on Guitar Hero III. Their energetic and humorous live performances have won them fans on every continent. The band is known for their long, complex and fast guitar solos performed by Herman Li and Sam Totman, who founded the band after meeting through a classified ad in 1999. Since then, the band has released seven studio albums: "Valley Of The Damned" (2003), "Sonic Firestorm" (2004), "Inhuman Rampage" (2006), "Ultra Beatdown" (2008), "The Power Within" (2012), "Maximum Overload" (2014) and "Reaching Into Infinity" (2017). 2019 brings the next chapter in DragonForce's history: "Extreme Power Metal"!Regarding "Extreme Power Metal", Li says: "This album combines again the best of DragonForce in an even bigger, more epic way than we have ever done before. We are so excited for fans to hear it!" Following the departure of Vadim Pruzhanov from the band last year, the keyboards of this new album were performed by Coen Janssen of symphonic metal titan Epica, bringing a new dimension into a DragonForce album. Totman says: "We worked really closely with Coen on this new album. We are so happy with what he has brought into this new album. Every fan will be so happy to hear his majestic playing!"Drawing from a wide range of influences, the band's sound combines the singalong choruses of classic 80s rock with triumphant, uplifting melodies and fantasy-themed power-metal-inspired lyrics. As a nod to their passion for all things video-game related, the band frequently incorporates retro game sounds and melodies into their recordings and live shows.Following the release of "Extreme Power Metal", DragonForce will begin their world tour in support of it. Li promises: "In this age, where our music is easily accessible, I am not going to waste time trying to describe the sound of our new album. I'll let the music do the talking! However, what I can tell you is that our upcoming tour will be our biggest in a decade. We have a massive epic production and a really special surprise for VIPs. We can't wait to see everyone out on the road!"
