Bio:

Axenstar is a metal band from Sweden, the band was formed in 1998 and the debut album "Perpetual Twilight" saw the light of day in 2002. Since then Axenstar have released "Far From Heaven" 2003, The Inquisition" 2005, "The Final Requiem" 2006 and after a five year long break the long awaited album "Aftermath" was released in January 2011. In other words Axenstar is back!!Axenstar (formerly called Powerage) is a power metal band from Västerås, Sweden, founded in 1998 by Peter Johansson and Magnus Ek. Their fifth and latest studio album, Aftermath, was released on 7 January 2011.

Album:

“Where Dreams Are Forgotten” is the sixth album by Swedish power metal quartet “AXENSTAR” and is their first to be released under “Inner Wound Recordings”.Power metal is one of my favourite metal genres; I love the energy, the melodies, the vocals, everything about power metal never fails to get me pumped up, and that’s exactly what AXENSTAR achieve from the very start of this album, “Fear” opens up “Where Dreams Are Forgotten” with speed and intensity, and sets the attitude for the album perfectly. What I love about this album is the diversity; frequently you will hear that signature power metal sound of harmonised guitar melodies and pretty ‘cheesy’ choruses, whilst surrounding all of the typical ‘happy’ sounding power metal genius, you also gets tastes of darker and moodier music, and AXENSTAR seem to blend the two attitudes well without causing too much musical conflict and confusion within a song.“Inside The Maze” kicks off with a very catchy melody which slightly makes me think of bands like “HELLOWEEN” or “EDGUY”, this is a great song with a moody verse and a typical catchy power metal chorus along with some great riffing from Joakim and Jens. “My Sacrifice” is next and is one of the highlights of this album. It starts off with possibly my favourite riff on this album, when the drums come in under this main riff you cannot help but bang your head to its galloping aggressiveness! Some of the lead work in this song is pretty amazing too!I love when a power metal band like AXENSTAR can showcase a lot of aggression along with that signature power metal ‘cheese’; It gives an album and/or band a lot more personality with the type of diversity shown here on “Where Dreams Are Forgotten”. I feel as if this album can easily reach my top 10 power metal releases this year; it is a brilliant well structured, well written, well recorded work of art and I urge you to not let this go without your attention, buy it and support AXENSTAR. I’m already eager to see what these guys do next.

Bio:

Axenstar was formed by Peter Johansson (guitar) and Magnus Ek (bass) as a Metal-cover band 1998 under the name Powerage, after several member changes the line up that took the name Axenstar in 2001 was Magnus Eriksson (Vocals & Keyboards), Thomas Eriksson (Lead & Rhythm Guitar), Peter Johansson (Rhythm & Lead Guitar), Magnus Ek (Bass) and Pontus Jansson (Drums). In October 2002 Axenstar released their debut album Perpetual Twilight on the Spanish label Arise Records. The album got really good reviews all over the world and Axenstar got the chance to play at Motala Metal Festival, the biggest gig so far in their career. The second album Far From Heaven was recorded during May of 2003 and just about a week after the recordings were done Axenstar played at the mighty Sweden Rock Festival, which was a great experience for the band. In January 2004 the opportunity was given to go ahead on their first European Tour as the opening act to Falconer, unfortunately Magnus Ek was unable to go on the tour and Joakim Jonsson (Skyfire, The Mist of Avalon) was found to be the stand-in bassplayer on the tour, which turned out great. The third album The Inquisition saw the light of day in 2005, but during this time and the time after the release there were some problems within the band and in late summer 2005 guitarists Peter Johansson and Thomas Eriksson left the band, not because of disagreements or anything like that but just personal reasons. After that third release the contract with Arise Records was over and Axenstar started looking for a new deal, now joining forces with Joakim Jonsson on lead guitar. In the autumn of 2005 a new deal was signed with German label Massacre Records and in the spring of 2006 the fourth album The Final Requiem was recorded as usual in Studio Underground..After the release of the fourth album there were more changes to come within the band and bassplayer Magnus Ek and drummer Pontus Jansson soon left the band due to lack of time. But already within a few months after the setback the two remaining members Magnus Winterwild and Joakim Jonsson found a new drummer by the name of Thomas Ohlsson. The search for a bassplayer started and Thomas contacted Henrik Sedell with whom Thomas had played together with previously. The chemistry with the two new members was great and everything was going well on both a personal and professional level. In June 2007 Axenstar did three shows in Sweden together with Nocturnal Rites that went really well. Then once again Magnus and Joakim were back to being the only members in Axenstar since both Henrik and Thomas left the band. The writing process then started with focus on a new album that were scheduled to be recorded in May of 2008.About 13 songs were written and 11 of them survived the cut and were recorded. In 2008 Magnus and Joakim recorded a new yet untitled album and in december 2008 drummer Adam Lindberg (Intrive) joined the band. A few months later guitarist Jens Klovegård (Liquid Suicide) also joined the band.In June 2010 a new deal is signed with German Rock It Up Records and the album “Aftermath” was released in January 2011. In September 2011 Axenstar headed over to the UK for the first time and together with special guests Ascension they did a five show mini-tour.In 2012 ten years after the release of the first Axenstar album a special anniversary show was arranged and all original members was invited up on stage to perform some of the songs from the Perpetual Twilight album, it turned out to be a really memorable night. In 2013 the songwriting started for a new album, 11 songs were written and recorded in pre-production purpose. Then in early 2014 the album “Where Dreams Are Forgotten” was recorded and in June of 2014 Axenstar signed a new record deal this time with Inner Wound Recordings.

Album:

Nice return to form from these Swedish power metal veterans Axenstar are back and, I have to say after hearing End of all Hope, their seventh full-length opus, they’re in something nearing career-best form. It’s a relief to be able to relate this, I can tell you, as I’ve felt the band have been on a bit of a steady downward curve since they released The Inquisition in 2005. They are a band who are never less than solid, yet I’ve just felt them running out of steam and ideas on the last few albums, especially the last release from them, 2014’s Where Dreams Are Forgotten. The Inquisition was coincidentally the last album they recorded for Arise Records, and since then the band has released albums on a variety of different labels – maybe their arrival at a new home at the Ram It Down imprint was a harbinger of a change in fortune!Whatever, the band are sounding hard, heavy and in fine fettle on tracks like Honor and Victory. Pounding double bass fuels most of the songs – new drummer Hampus Fasth is surely given every offer to showcase his skills throughout – but it’s not just heads down mayhem I can assure you. Soaring melodies abound, and the superbly melodic smarts of guitarists Joakim Jonsson and Jens Klovegård never fail to take already superb tracks to the next level.Moment In Time is possibly the standout track, if only because the band take their feet off the throttle to deliver something a little different, in the process producing a superb, classy take on prog metal that’ll have fans of names like Wolverine doing a double take before grinning approvingly and immersing themselves in the gorgeous arrangement.Magnus Winterwild makes all the right moves behind the microphone, never pushing himself too hard but always delivering, and his keyboard embellishments are always on point, meaning that, as noted, this is probably the most complete-sounding release from Axenstar for some little while. Fans of power metal in it’s purest style are gonna love End of All Hope, that’s for sure!
