Bio:

IRONFLAME is a traditional heavy/power metal entity born of multi-instrumentalist Andrew D'Cagna. Although the music of IRONFLAME finally came to life in late-2016, its growth into fruition had been decades in the making. Andrew grew up in the late-'80s/early-'90s listening to classic metal acts like Iron Maiden, Savatage, Helloween, and Judas Priest. He was also lucky enough to have been blessed with a singing voice that lent itself well to the genre. Despite Andrew's given ability, however, he rarely used it—instead becoming influenced by more extreme realms of metal and pursuing such musical interests for 15 years, playing various instruments in death and black metal bands.Andrew was then recruited by renowned guitarist Jim Dofka as vocalist for the band Dofka, where he honed his raw vocal talent and learned how to sing properly through 2010, performing on the Humanity Bleak album. Years later, upon the untimely death of a mutual friend, Dofka reunited for a one-night performance in October of 2016. These events stirred up many old feelings, and Andrew felt it was time to write an album of purely traditional metal. Thus, IRONFLAME was born. The end result is Lightning Strikes the Crown: a 40-minute tribute to the glory days of heavy metal. Free of pretension and arrogance, the music of IRONFLAME is catchy, familiar, and hook-laden—just good old fist-banging metal that is as honest as it is memorable. All of the instruments and vocals were performed/recorded by Andrew himself, with the exception of a handful of local guitar buddies recruited for solos—Jim Dofka among them.

Album:

You’ve got to hand it to Adam Neal. In a time when throngs of old-school bands are desperately trying to carve out their own niche and struggling to establish an identity in a saturated marketplace, Savage Master are instantly recognizable. Visually, the pride of Louisville, Kentucky present a striking image onstage, four hooded male musicians in black leather and chains (one with a giant upside-down cross tattooed on his chest) and a snarling female vocalist (Stacey Savage) who is equally capable of kicking your ass and rocking your world. But aside from the shock value of the live presentation, Savage Master have also hacked their own well-defined musical path through the heavy metal underbrush. Take a heaping dose of occult early-80s metal along the lines of Cirith Ungol, add a generous portion of New Wave of British Heavy Metal goodness, sprinkle in some punk attitude and a no-frills blue-collar approach to their craft, toss in lyrics extolling the three S’s (sin, sacrifice and Satan), and you’ll have a decent idea of what’s in store. Over the course of two well-received albums and numerous tours, guitarist Adam Neal and his bandmates have remained clear-eyed, clinging fast to this pure artistic vision regardless of the churning maelstrom around them in the underground metal scene. When you hear a Savage Master song, you know instantly it’s them, from the raw production values to the savage vocals to the distinctive riffing style and grimy guitar tone. The downside of such stubborn adherence to the path, of course, is that you run the risk of redundancy. How do you hold true to your vision while keeping your new material from sounding like a carbon copy (or worse, a pale imitation) of what you’ve done before? Judging by Savage Master’s forthcoming new mini-album (what’s the difference between a mini-album and an EP anyway?), this is not a problem for Neal and his merry crew of masked marauders. Entitled Creature of the Flames, this five-song release sounds like pure Savage Master through and through, but with a couple of interesting twists. High-velocity first single “Burning Leather” is a real “blood pumper” (to borrow Stacey’s perfect description of the track in a recent online post), but the guitars are noticeably more melodic than you’ve ever heard on a Savage Master song. Elsewhere, “Creature of the Flames” is a slow, doomy hymn. A truly haunting pounder clocking in at nearly six minutes, the title track is the longest Savage Master track to date and more nuanced than anything they’ve ever done before, with a couple of cool change-ups near the end. That galloping riff at around the 4:25 mark kills me every time. “Death or Glory” is an unexpected romp through the well-known Holocaust song, faithfully rendered but with their own stamp all over it. I’ve been listening to that song for three decades, yet they’ve made it feel like a Savage Master original. Remarkable. All of these touches make this mini-album feel fresh and vibrant, without stepping outside the circle of what the band are all about. So as not to leave the other two songs out of the equation, I’ll just say “Dark Enchantress” is vintage, mid-paced Savage Master at their best, with an earworm riff and lyrics about “sexual witchcraft,” whatever that is. And opener “Child of the Witch” is another winner, a midtempo headbanger with a terrific vocal from Stacey and a chorus that sticks immediately. I could see this one becoming a staple in the live set. It’s difficult to draw too many conclusions from a 5-song, 19-minute EP, or mini-album, or whatever. Nonetheless, I am convinced that that Creature of the Flames will keep Savage Master on the same upward trajectory they’ve enjoyed since the beginning. The songs are great, some of the best they’ve ever written. Stacey Savage delivers her most convincing vocal performance to date. No, her voice isn’t for everybody, but she sounds totally confident and totally in control here, more so than ever before. Also, I would be remiss not to mention the contributions of new drummer John Littlejohn, a good friend of mine from Mississippi who does a terrific job here. There are so many places where I hear the little touches he’s added, his own personal flair, yet remaining within the parameters of the song, that I can’t help but smile. Creature of the Flames may not win over those who’ve dismissed the band previously, but if you’ve ever enjoyed Savage Master before, mark your calendar for the October 13, 2017 release date and add this to your shopping list posthaste. And if you’ve somehow never heard Kentucky’s finest, well, it’s hard to imagine a better introduction point than Creature of the Flames. I bet these songs will be devastating live, and can’t wait to hear for myself next month at the Frost and Fire Festival in sunny California.

Bio:

Ironflame is a powermetal band from Washington, Pennsylvania. It’s a solo project made by the one and only Andrew D’Cagna who is also a member of Brimstone Coven. His new debut album ‘Lightning Strikes The Crown’ got released via bandcamp and it features a whole bunch of amazing guests. Jim Dofka (Rev Jones Band, Leather Leone) for example created the guitar solo on the song ”Firestorm” & ”Fallen Glory”, He isn’t the only guest that took part in the powerful solo’s, Aaron Carey (Coldfells), Justin Wood (Ex-Brimstone Cove, Necromancing the Stone) and last but not least Johnathan Crow (Curse The Wicked). Aaron took care of the guitar solo in ”Marching” and ”Shadow Queen” where Justin got a hold on the solo’s in ”The Gorgon” and my personal favorite song ”Eternal Night”. The best 2 songs on the album, ”Heavy Metal Warriors” and ”What We’ve Sown”, features guitarist Johnathan on the guitar playing mad solo’s. Never have I heard of an album with so many different guitarists but it works out really well! The lyrics and everything else has been the work of Andrew himself. He really is capable of a lot! ‘Lightning Strikes The Crown’ has been released via bandcamp on the 22th of May and for a first album this is incredibly good. The power of the album is without a doubt in the wide diversity of musicians.

Album:

Ironflame’s second full-length Tales of Splendor and Sorrow demonstrates massive growth with very little change. The formula of 2017’s Lightning Strikes the Crown is unaltered as the American power metal tropes of blazing guitar runs, high-pitched vocal layers, and triumphant melodies are lovingly displayed. The project also keeps to its one-man roots as the ever-prolific Andrew D’Cagna provides all vocals and instrumentation aside from the solos, which were all played by live guitarist and East Coast shredder extraordinaire Jim Dofka.Despite just a year between releases, Tales of Splendor and Sorrow clearly had more thought put into it than its predecessor. Ironflame’s debut was an off-the-cuff slice of fun allegedly written and recorded in a couple weeks, but this album’s expanded runtime and loftier songs indicate a more methodical approach time around. There’s still plenty of that catchiness left around but establishing a greater sense of scale has taken equal priority.Thankfully D’Cagna’s musicianship and songwriting skills live up to this rising ambition. The songs aren’t as snappy as before and don’t hit quite as hard, but the performances remain energetic and the structures are well contained. The guitar work is noticeably darker on certain tracks, but the vocals remain the band’s biggest asset, delivering plenty of hooks in a convictive, ballsy tenor.A sense of déjà vu is the only real nitpick when examining these Tales. The similarities between songs like “Sword and Shield” and “Marching On” is natural considering the shared style of both albums, but there are moments where the project’s outside influences are made apparent. The mid-tempo charge on “Bringer of Fire” recalls Balls to the Wall-era Accept, the chorus progression of “The Contract” bears a striking resemblance to Bruce Dickinson’s “The Magician,” and “Our Great Defender” is a moody, dark number with shades of Mercyful Fate’s “Melissa.” Considering the sheer amount of class this project exudes compared to its peers, I really can’t complain.Considering how Ironflame’s second album had to not only follow up its debut a year later but also compete with D’Cagna’s endless sea of other projects, it’s amazing how much it’s progressed between releases. It’s impressive to see how much the songwriting has developed without changing the style or band dynamic and I can only imagine how much effort was exerted to see it all through. Whether you prefer the debut’s spontaneous execution or this album’s erudite attitude, Ironflame deserves to be a top dog in American power metal.

Album:

America‘s New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal has been going strong for a few years now. It’s a lot of fun to see this style of music grow and mature, and while there have been some acts that have made some waves, there is still plenty of room for quality NWOTHM. IRONFLAME is most certainly establishing themselves as a torchbearer (pun intended) Of this exciting sub genre of Heavy Metal. Blood Red Victory is the sound of a band that’s really hitting its stride and finding what works for them. There are some critiques that I do have about this album, but it’s nothing glaringly obvious that is detracting from the experience of listening to it. As someone who is becoming more of a fan of NWOTHM, I am in no way surprised to see such a strong act coming out of the eastern Ohio/western Pennsylvania area. Having been raised in the Midwest myself, I can tell you that most of us from that corner of the world we’re raised on a steady diet of Classic Rock and cut our teeth learning all those timeless riffs. So add that on top of being able to research all different kinds of music on the World Wide Web, it makes perfect sense To hear this kind of music from these guys and from this part of the US.First of all, I will address the compliments that I can make about this album. I can say with all honesty that IRONFLAME succeeded In writing an album that is both anthemic and fun. Andrew D’Cagna Understands incredibly well that if you’re going to write an anthemic song, it is best to use terms like “we” and “us“ to give the listener the sensation that they are not alone leaving them free to engage with the band and sing along. Also, there is lots and lots and lots of guitar all over the album. I certainly like that, even though I am biased as a guitar player. The solos and the riffing are done very tastefully, and it’s obvious that there’s no shortage of talent in this roster. When it comes to the vocal performances, the melodies and the harmonies are top notch. Not only are they performed and recorded well, but the melodies are very rememberable. Multiple times this week, the choruses of songs like “Honor Bound” and “Night Queen” came into my mind. That’s a telltale sign of a strongly written melody.I do have a few critiques of the album, and overall, they are minor. And I actually have critiques for the things I praised in the last paragraph, the guitars and the harmonies. The performance of the guitars is amazing, however, the way the guitars were mixed made them sound very harsh to my ears. I listened to the album on multiple sound sources from iPod earbuds to headphones to playing it over my car stereo. Each time the results were the same where after a while, my ears became tired from the harshness of the way the guitars were mixed. In regards to the harmonies, yes they’re performed well, but it’s the first time I’ve almost thought there were too many harmonies on an album. Again, this is coming from someone that adores QUEEN and THIN LIZZY and how they use harmonies. I happen to think that the harmonies are a bit overkill on this album. Personally, I think as the band stripped back there sound a little bit more and recorded with all of the members in the studio together, I think it would make for a great sound. However, I understand the struggle of Musicians nowadays. Going into a great studio with a great producer costs money, but even with everything that I could critique about this album, it’s still a really good album. These are all minor adjustments that I think would make a difference. Nothing glaringly major is off about this from start to finish.I think I can truthfully say that this sub genre of heavy-metal is growing on me. It’s a lot of fun to see music down in the style of what I grew up with getting popular again. And now, IRONFLAME is another NWOTHM band I can get behind and support. They wear their influences on their shoulder without coming off as cheesy or irrelevant, and the fact that they have graced the stage of top-tier festivals in both the US and Europe is testament to the strength of their live show and their albums. Each of these songs could easily be the soundtrack to either a Dungeons & Dragons session or a drunken night at the local bar or a drunken D&D session at the local bar (I’ve seen that happen). And yes, as always, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Album:

Having offered subtle variations on a speedy and highly melodic power metal template on their first three albums, Ironflame’s fourth full-length sees a different attitude starting to take hold. Where Madness Dwells is still in line with the project’s established Maiden inspiration but also continues the more aggressive shift that was hinted at in 2020’s Blood Red Victory. The lyrics have also taken on a more cynical air as the personal themes provide some contrast from their previously established tales of fantasy escapism and heavy metal glory.Moving beyond the Vincent Price samples that bookend the album, “A Funeral Within” provides the first notable outlier halfway through, slowing down to a mid-tempo pace after the opening songs’ speeds with the guitars providing hefty chugs and more ominous lead work. “The Phantom Fire” might be the most cynical track of the lot as the intense guitars, sharper vocals, and double bass drumming do a lot to reinforce its righteous ‘fuck your job’ theming.Of course, there’s still room for plenty of those signature Ironflame anthems to keep shining through, especially during the album’s first half. “Under the Spell” puts in the most effective hooks reminiscent of Riot or Helloween and while the chorus on “Ready to Strike” comes off as perhaps a little too simple, it’ll work its way into your head with time. The title track also serves up some mid-tempo flavor from the triumphant side, closing the album out on a hearty gallop and uplifting solos.Where Madness Dwells might be just a hair shy of the tremendous streak seen with Ironflame’s first three albums, but it ultimately manages to be another strong classic metal work. While the band’s development is still so gradual as to not feel too drastic between releases, the bitter touch behind certain tracks helps give it a distinct character while still doing service to the engaging hooks and tight musicianship. At the very least, Ironflame retains their title as perhaps the most consistent band in the whole NWOTHM movement.
