Bio:

One fateful day in Boston, some years ago, two immortals crossed paths in a bookstore. He, Jack Kosto, was of many, many notes, and she, Adrienne Cowan, was of darkness and the old world. Such was the birth of Seven Spires, and so it shall always be. With the fortunate additions of old friends Chris Dovas and Peter de Reyna, the family was complete. Though young in countenance, the four were armed with highly specialised training from Berklee College of Music, as well as an insatiable drive to earn that which they hungered for.In their early years, they shared bills with the likes of Arch Enemy, Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Epica, The Agonist, Butcher Babies, Amaranthe, Kreator, Huntress, Carach Angren, and others. They completely sold out of records, and then ventured to Gate Studios in Wolfsburg, Germany to finish recording their new album with the illustrious Sascha Paeth.

Album:

Seven Spires’ new album is “SOLVEIG”, a theatrical metal concept album in two acts. It is the story of a lost soul and his journey through a Demon’s sunless neo-victorian underworld. Despite small glimmers of hope, it is a grim tale with a heavy focus on escapism, death, and decadence. With distinct attention to melancholic power metal, melodic death, and black metal, Seven Spires fuse sounds from across the spectrum of metal with their great love for Romantic composers, and the atmospheric and storytelling capabilities of film scores. There’s hardly anything in metal that makes my stomach churn quite like the vague descriptor of “symphonic metal.” It’s not that most of the stuff is bad so much as the genre, as a whole, is lacking in creative intent, which I find much more offensive. Sure, bands like Epica manage to craft genuine depth within the tired sonic template, but most bands are content with weakly emulating modern Nightwish whilst positioning a pretty girl front and center in promo shots to attract more eyes than ears. Enter Seven Spires, a Boston-based act I blindly picked as a personal punching bag after going soft from weeks of reviewing great material. Featuring Adrienne Cowan of Light and Shade (a band we largely panned last year), their debut Solveig, armed with the most excruciatingly mediocre cover art of the year, is doomed to fail… right? Actually, hardly at all. What allows Seven Spires to rise a good head or two above their peers is a genuine ear for quality hooks as opposed to the generic melodicism that defines Delain and their ilk. For much of its length, Solveig resides deeper within the power metal spectrum than I had anticipated, at times recalling modern Kamelot in its ability to conjure bittersweet melodies and melancholic atmosphere. There is an impressive level of variety, too; the average tempo is predictably mid-paced, but Seven Spires avoids sinking into tedium thanks to songs that incorporate elements of black metal, melodeath, and even alternative rock. At sixty-four minutes in length, this variety is an absolute blessing and makes Solveig feel like a surprisingly breezy listen despite some filler. That filler is mostly confined to the first half of the record, with tracks one through seven serving as Act One of this two–act, supernatural–themed concept album. The first part consists entirely of songs from an EP that Seven Spires recorded in 2014, resulting in a noticeable gulf in quality, the latter half undoubtedly superior thanks to overall better melodies and a stronger sense of rhythmic urgency. In comparison, Solveig’s first act can feel downright plodding; first proper track “Encounter” immediately establishes the album’s distinct gothic tone yet largely goes through the motions, its rhythm section chugging at a slow, dispassionate gallop. While Act One isn’t entirely without merit — “Choices” and “Closure” heavily foreshadow the Kamelot-isms that define later tracks like “Stay” — others feel misguided. “The Cabaret of Dreams” is particularly troublesome, a strange attempt at a Diablo Swing Orchestra-lite1 with an awkward chorus delivered in grating fashion by Cowan.Adrienne Cowan’s performances are as mixed as the album’s quality. She has incredible range, but she can’t quite seem to pinpoint her strengths. Her cleans are totally appealing despite an anemic mid-range, but the high-end shrieks that she insists on utilizing in every song really need to be put out to pasture. They’re fine as a tool to briefly support emotional peaks, but on tracks like “Depths” where she delivers entire choruses in banshee mode, she sounds infuriatingly obnoxious and off-pitch. Her death metal growls and black metal rasps, however, are delivered with conviction, her harsh vox bolstering the gothic, Cradle of Filth-like dramatics of “The Paradox” and the proggy, Amon Amarth-esque riffs of “Serenity.” These tracks and other highlights, including the aforementioned “Stay” and the Avantasia levels of theatricality in “Ashes,” make for memorable high points that keep drawing me into Solveig despite its inconsistencies. A bit more variety and technicality on the part of the rhythm section could have made return trips even more enticing, but the musicians propel the album forward competently enough despite some blandness.I thought I knew exactly what to expect going into Solveig, and the weaker first half nearly confirmed my suspicions, especially with a predictably modern production that screams “DR6” from the first notes. While I’ll probably never be sold on this record as a whole, its strong second half makes for a decently recommendable album to fans of Kamelot looking for power metal with a side helping of extreme metal eccentricities. If Cowan can learn to play to her strengths and the band as a whole can craft a more consistent package, I’ll absolutely be on board for Seven Spires‘ sophomore effort.

Album:

As Frontiers continues to rapidly expand the metal portion of its roster, one serious feather in the cap is the signing of the incredibly talented Seven Spires. The band met while studying at the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, so we need not spend much time going on about their musical capabilities, but needless to say, the band's musicianship is in keeping with the metal tradition of tireless work to be the best at your craft. Singer Adrienne Cowan is a true talent, with vocals ranging from the beautiful to the demonic. The band's sophomore album "Emerald Seas" is highly emotional, dark, and theatrical. The band, as with their debut, collaborated with Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Kamelot, Epica, etc.), who mixed and mastered the album. Incidentally, Adrienne Cowan was handpicked by Paeth to front his new band, Sascha Paeth's Masters Of Ceremony and she is also one of the touring vocalists for the hugely popular Avantasia.Seven Spires is an American metal quartet specializing in melancholic tales and tenebrous grandeur. Part bittersweet melodic metal anthems, part apocalyptic melodic death and black metal, and part Romantic Classical poets, they are storytellers who draw from across the traditional spectrum of metal and beyond to weave tragedies of demons, death, love, and the peculiarities of human condition.Following a highly successful crowdfunding campaign and release of their debut album "Solveig", Seven Spires performed extensively in the US, Canada and at festivals such as MetalDays, 70,000 Tons of Metal, and ProgPower USA.Seven Spires continue the Frontiers' tradition of identifying and signing the most promising talents to ensure that the future of hard rock and metal music is in good hands.

Album:

American metal quartet SEVEN SPIRES is the best-kept secret of the metal scene. Or at least it would be if lead vocalist Adrienne Cowan wouldn’t have toured with AVANTASIA or been featured on Sascha Paeth’s MASTERS OF CEREMONY’s debut album, “Signs of Wings” (2019). She was also part of HEART HEALER’s album “The Metal Opera by Magnus Karlsson” (2021). One could argue she’s on a roll as SEVEN SPIRES’ third full-length, “Gods of Debauchery,” will be released on September 10, 2021, via Frontiers Music.I’ll start this review with a personal note: this is the album I have wanted to hear from SEVEN SPIRES ever since I started following them. I was extremely excited in early 2020 when they released “Emerald Seas” but its symphonic nature and serene beauty kind of threw me off, especially considering how different their debut album, 2017’s “Solveig,” sounds. However, “Gods of Debauchery” takes all the best elements from both and combines them into one exquisite release, while also continuing the story set up by “Solveig.” What is most impressive is how each of the sixteen tracks brings something different to the soundscape of the album that makes the 77 minutes of playtime feel that much shorter. Such a varied tracklist also gives “Gods of Debauchery” great playability, as on each subsequent listen you can discover new aspects of the music, or you can simply enjoy the complexity of the compositions in greater detail and just revel in Adrienne Cowan’s dulcet tones.Grand and rich in textures, concept record “Gods of Debauchery” offers a wide array of musical styles within the all-encompassing umbrella of heavy metal, from accents of death metal and even some black metal, to symphonic metal and touches of progressive metal. The lead single and title track unleashes the band’s heavier side from the start and listeners get to hear Adrienne Cowan’s versatile growling styles and her bandmates’ prowess for their respective instruments. “The Cursed Muse” mixes things up as its melodic chorus offsets the harsh verses while the backing orchestrations add an extra layer of melody to sweeten the aggression of the guitars. There are a few other heavier numbers scattered on this album, like “Shadows of an Endless Sea,” “Gods Amongst Men,” or “Dreamchaser,” and their placement in the flow of the album is well thought of, as to break up the symphonic display and bring some drama and heft to the overall soundscape. On the other hand, tracks like “Ghost of Yesterday” or “Echoes of Eternity” showcase their melodic and playful side, leaning a bit into oriental metal with some fascinating vocal and guitar melodies, while the drums and bass keep a steady rhythm underneath. “Lightbringer” (which features some vocals from Casey Lee Williams) is the curveball of the record, with its overtly pop vibes and repeated melodic hooks, feeling more like a dance number than a metal tune. “Dare to Live” is an anthemic track with a powerful bass presence and a groovy chorus, while “In Sickness, In Health” is a ballad á la SEVEN SPIRES, which means gentle verses, loud chorus sections, and an explosive guitar solo. Like most of their songs, it changes as it progresses, with some parts that don’t seem to fit in with the classic definition of what a ballad should sound like. “Oceans of Time” and “Fall with Me” are pure symphonic metal delights with gorgeous backing orchestrations. “Through Lifetimes” feels like the climax of the story, as the orchestrations and piercing violin lines rise in a furious crescendo, only to then give way to calmer passages. One of the album’s amazing highlights is “This God is Dead,” not just because of Roy Khan’s vocals on but also because of how well put together this song is, from the orchestrations to the vocals lines and interaction between Adrienne and Roy, to the smooth flow of the different sections of the song. This track really is a microcosm of the album, as it has beautiful symphonic moments, harsher parts, orchestral breaks, and of course Roy Khan’s voice that brings serenity to the music, popping up at just the right time. Another highlight is “The Unforgotten Name,” a proper duet with Jon Pyres where the two vocalists blend their voices in an upsurge of emotions and harmonies, backed up by orchestrations and steady drums. It’s always interesting to hear harsh vocals in what otherwise feels like a ballad, but if the song demands it, why not do it? There’s also a musical leitmotif that brings cohesiveness to the album, and that is a reprise in various forms of the lyrics from “Wanderer’s Prayers.” This just goes to show you the crazy attention to detail that was put into the making of this album. The four members of SEVEN SPIRES are primarily storytellers and it shows in how complex and engrossing their music is. “Gods of Debauchery” is a great example of that. The songs don’t necessarily follow a certain structure, so it is only natural that they twist and change so as to accommodate the narrative that they are telling. Even if they are not very long, they are very rich sonically and quite cinematic, working together to create a tapestry of sounds, emotions, and textures that highlight the exceptional musicality within the band. To paraphrase something that Laureline said about JINJER, I don’t see SEVEN SPIRES in another line-up other than vocalist Adrienne Cowan, guitarist Jack Kosto, drummer Chris Dovas, and bassist Peter de Reyna, as they work so perfectly together to compose music that is on a whole different level than what most metal banda out there produce.Bottom line: “Gods of Debauchery” is the not-to-be-missed album of the year and SEVEN SPIRES is a band that deserves more recognition as the future flag bearers of symphonic metal.
