DERDIAN born in1998 , by an idea of Henry Pistolese (rithm guitar) and Marco Covelli (drums). The band was initially interested in Trash-Metal style, covering bands like Metallica and Megadeth, but when they decided to write original songs they approached Power Metal, in order to make their music powerful, loud and melodic. After some line-up changes, Derdian released their first self-produced demo-Cd called “Revenge”, distributed just in Italy and very well reviewed by main local Power Metal-focused magazines and web-sites like “Power Zone” mag, “Orion” mag and and “Eutk” site. After the recording of this demo, new line-up changes occurred and, in the meantime, the band managed to play a few live-shows in Italy (“Indian’s Saloon Club”, “Transilvania Live Club”, “Madigan’s Pub”, etc.). In 2003 Derdian self-released their debut-MCD “Incitement” , featuring 3 original songs + 1 CDRom track (containing a live-video for the title-track) that got great reviews and led the band to sign a record-deal with Steelheart/Adrenaline Records.The debut-CD “New Era (Part I)” have seen the light in February/March 2005 and it marked the beginning of a new era in the story of the band.The debut album sold a lot of copies all around the world , specially in Japan Korea,Canada and USA. By now too New Era pt. 1 is very requested by all the metal heads all around the world At the end of 2006, after a self promotion by Myspace, Derdian was contacted by the great American label : Magna Carta ( Portnoy, Billy Sheean, Jordan Rudess, Steve Morse) that proposed an agreement to the band. Derdian signed this agreement and the new album: New Era pt 2- War of the Gods came out in august in USA and In September 2007 in Europe In 9 years the Band had faced a lot of difficulties, and problems of all sorts, but now they are ready to scream out their music and their battle hymns !

Album:

DERDIAN is band from Milan, Italy, formed back in 1998 and has been embracing the realm Symphonic Power Metal. Their discography includes: “New Era (Part I)” of 2005, “New Era (Part II) - War of the Gods” of 2007, “New Era (Part III) - The Apocalypse” of 2010 and the fresh album of 2013, “Limbo”.The great opener, “Carpe Diem”, surges with fast paced and powerful drums and heavy riffs with the band's backing singing. This is a first presentation of the next hour's show. I like “Dragon Life” with its amazing keyboards display, the energetic rapid pace in the vein of GAMMA RAY. The vocals are high pitched & intensely melodic. This song was built almost to perfection with an impressive rhythm section, penetrating riffing and a grand guitar solo. “Forever In The Dark” handling the true essence of the combo Power Metal with symphonic orchestrations and fine melodies, diverse tempos and definitive keyboards. Every bit of this one seemed planned ahead for a tremendous build up. “Strange Journey” is characterised by great lyrics and impressive singing by Ivan Giannini, a quality that he kept throughout the entire album. The singing followed the rhythm mostly, yet the melodic line took hold as the standout moment massed in the chorus section. The solo section afterwards, even better. “Limbo”, quite an epic, appeared to be progressed in comparison to the classic nature of the rest of the tracks, bits of aggression and elasticity crumbed jointly in robust melodic tunes. “Heal My Soul” features a guitar playing following the likes of HELLOWEEN and STRATOVARIUS, providing an exquisite atmosphere. “Light Of Hate”, smelled of STRATOVARIUS when it came down to the energetic pace, pushes forward, creating a Power Metal sensation crossing with DRAGONFORCE. Worth listening are also the keyboards demonstrations. “Terror” continues the same outpouring of vigour, same goes with “Kingdom Of Your Heart” with its solo instant. “Hymn Of Liberty” is more or less the album's summary and the band's fine antics."Limbo” is a killer no doubt about it. I enjoyed it very much. The crew of musicians have plenty of experience and it is being proven nearly every minute of the album's production and compositions. DERDIAN has been a part of the melodic end of Power Metal influenced by quite a selection of bands: GAMMA RAY, HELLOWEEN, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, SONATA ARCTICA, DRAGONFORCE, STRATOVARIUS among the many known bands. This is a fine experience that should be encompassed.

Album:

Bands, especially those in Europe, do this routinely. I guess it's what you do when the creative musical well is empty. You release a greatest hits album or, more likely, re-arranged and re-record a selection of songs and, maybe just maybe, throw in a new song or two. Yep. That's the case with Derdian's Revolution Era. Calling this a "new" album is a mildly deceptive suggestion.As the title suggests, the gathered what they're calling the "greatest hits" from the first three albums, the New Era trilogy, then re-arranged and re-recorded them. The first and most obvious question is, How did they determine that these songs were the fans' favorite? Beats me. Now, to be fair there is something new to this album. Because their most recent vocalist Ivan Giannini has departed band, for the ubiquitous and nebulous "musical and organizational differences," Derdian has recorded these songs with a bevy quite famous vocalists. It's a notable "who's who" from the European and Italian metal realm. The short list includes Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), D.C. Cooper (Royal Hunt), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire, Angra), Apollo Papathanasio (Ex-Firewind, Evil Masquerade), and Terence Holler (Eldritch). You can learn more on their website or Facebook page. Also new is one song Lord Of War which features none other than Fabio Lione on vocals.Suffice to say that Revolution Era is a mountain full of Derdian's bombastic and outrageous symphonic power metal. If you dig that, you will like this album. If you've never listened to Derdian, this album would be a fine introduction to them and their back catalogue. And if you're a fan, and know these songs quite well, you may be curious as to how these songs sound with different vocalists. If so, you should probably buy the album. Me? I've never heard any New Era album, so I can't say if these re-recordings are better or worse. Honestly, Derdian sounds like listening to another Rhapsody Of Fire clone. They are from Italy after all.

Italian power metallers Derdian are set to release their seventh full-length album on July 25, 2018. DNA will be released via King Records in Asia and independently elsewhere.Derdian are a symphonic power metal band formed in 1998 in Milan. Proudly self-produced, self-distributed and independent, their music is a fusion between symphonic orchestrations and thrash metal riffs with powerful speed drumming and unique easy listening catchy melodies. In 2004 after two demos, Revenge (2001) and Incitement (2003), the band signed the first record deal for Steelheart Records and published the debut album called New Era pt.1. In short, the album became a little jewel among the power metal fanatics: 100,000 followers on the old MySpace witnessed the popularity of the band. The raising weight around the web got the attention of the prog American major label Magna Charta and in 2006 Derdian signed for 2 albums, New Era pt.2 – War of the Gods and New Era pt.3 – The Apocalypse. The fame in the power metal world scene got huge, especially in Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe but the American label didn’t give any kind of support to the band so in 2013 Derdian split from Magna Charta choosing to be independent.In 2013, after 3 fantasy albums, the band broke up with the singer Joe Caggianelli and hired a quite famous Italian YouTuber Ivan Giannini releasing its 4th full-length album called Limbo. A different voice and a heavier thrashy sound with lyrics about modern society neurosis marked the new path to follow. The result of this new approach was great worldwide selling and a brand new major distribution deal for Asia with the Japanese label Spiritual Beast. In 2015 the band released the world acclaimed album Human Reset, top power metal album of the year in many magazines (Metal Hammer above all) and power metal webzines and top selling metal album on Amazon Spain for several months. After participating at some international festivals such the Italian Total Metal Festival and the Made of Metal in the Czech Republic, the band temporarily parted with the singer Ivan Giannini, busy in the pop tv show The Voice of Italy. In the meantime, the first greatest hits album called Revolution Era was released with the participation of internationally renowned artists as Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire, Angra), DC Cooper (Royal Hunt), GL Perotti (Extrema), Terence Holler (Eldritch) and many others. The album came out in June 2016. In 2017 Ivan came back and in September the band successfully toured Japan, supporting Nuclear Blast bands as Freedom Call and Twilight Force. In September 2018 Derdian will independently tour Japan again. The 7th album DNA will be released in July 2018.

The new eagerly awaited chapter of saga began 18 years ago.Album releases October 20, 2023.Five years after the last album "DNA", the band DERDIAN, founded at the end of the nineties, returns to its roots and continues with "New Era Part IV - Resurgence" the "A New Era-Fantasy-Story" started on the first three albums, after devoting themselves to more current, contemporary themes on the last albums.Except for a short guest appearance at the Magna Carta label for two albums at the beginning of their career, the Italians release their albums on their own. Symphonic power metal from Italy, that's exactly what I'm looking for - but so far DERDIAN has passed me by, but that will surely change, that's for sure! But let's start at the beginning.After a short keyboard intro, the opener 'The Grin of Revenge' starts fast. My first impression is: RHAPSODY when they didn't have FIRE in their name - only without bombast. Singer Ivan, who also holds the mic with compatriots VISION DIVINE, has a powerful voice that operates more in the middle than in the very high registers, but he masters them. 'The Evil Messiah' convinces with smooth vocal lines, a nice piano break and strong guitar solo. Apropos - the guitars are surprisingly hard for the genre and sometimes touch US metal regions. Thumbs up, I can recommend the evil messiah as a play tip. Face To Face' is an aggressive midtempo stomper, before it gets more upbeat again with 'Dorian'. Here Ivan shows that he also hits high notes without it cutting your eardrums and also acts confidently and powerfully in these registers. Black Thyphoon' was already released as a single in 2021. A good choice, because the song is quite representative of the album and sums it up well with snappy solos from keyboard and guitar, varied vocals, numerous tempo changes. The title track 'Resurgence' follows, and I would like to mention the crystal-clear sound, in which no instrument is lost, despite the almost permanently depressed foot pedals, bass, keyboards and guitars can be heard clearly and distinctly at all times! The sound on this album is simply great cinema! All Is Lost' is the (power) ballad of the album, it starts quietly, with acoustic guitar and keyboard. Here I would like to mention singer Ivan again, how clearly and powerfully the man acts, even if the voice stands quasi on its own. The band's anthem 'Derdian' follows quickly, before 'Astar Will Come Back' is the end of a fantastic album.Even after several listens I can't find any points of criticism, the kitsch factor on 'New Era Part IV - Resurgence' is low, the guitars have a lot of pressure and power, rhythmically there is a lot of variety in every song and you always find new, small details. The keyboards are always present, but don't clutter up the songs, the guitar dominates the sound.None of this is new or even innovative, but in the musical framework in which the band operates, it almost doesn't get any better than this. The only thing I miss is a long track, but that can come on one of the next albums. With me, the Italians have won a new fan, and I still ask myself how it can be that the guys have slipped through my fingers so far? Maybe that's one of the disadvantages of not having a label behind you?For fans of RHAPSODY (OF FIRE), DRAGONLAND or VISION DIVINE a must, but also STRATOVARIUS or SONATA ARCTICA lovers can, no must, risk an ear! DERDIAN are simply too good to keep flying under the radar.
