Bio:

Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in the mid-1980s in Krefeld, West Germany. They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres.Nine musicians have been a part of the band's line-up in its history, which has consisted of singer Hansi Kürsch, guitarists André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen, and drummer Frederik Ehmke since 2005.Blind Guardian is a part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the mid-1980s. They formed in 1984 as Lucifer's Heritage by Kürsch (then also bass guitarist), Olbrich, other guitarist Markus Dörk and drummer Thomas Stauch. Dörk and Stauch both left the following year, and were replaced by Christof Theißen and Hans-Peter Frey respectively, who left as well before the end of the year. In 1987, Siepen joined and Stauch returned; under this line-up, which lasted 18 years (the longest in the band's history), the band changed their name to Blind Guardian and released their first album, Battalions of Fear, in 1988.Over the releases, Blind Guardian established themselves as a notable successful band and as pioneers of the power metal movement. In 1996, Kürsch stopped acting as the band's bass guitarist to focus on vocals. Various session members replaced him, mainly Oliver Holzwarth. However in 2005, Stauch left the band, disapproving of Blind Guardian's transition into a more complex progressive sound with a heavy use of backing vocals, and was replaced by Ehmke. Most of Blind Guardian's albums were well received by fans and critics alike: Somewhere Far Beyond (1992), Imaginations from the Other Side (1995), and Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998), are especially seen as influential works. The music is mostly composed by Kürsch and Olbrich together, and the lyrics, written by Kürsch, are mostly inspired by the fiction of fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Robert Jordan, Stephen King and George R. R. Martin as well as traditional legends and epics.Over the years a theme has developed which personifies the band members as travelling storytellers, leading fans to refer to the band affectionately as "The Bards".

Album:

The wait is over! BLIND GUARDIAN is back! The world's most popular fantasy metal band gives us 'Twilight Of The Gods'– the first single from their long-awaited new album, to be unleashed upon the world in in January 2015.'Twilight Of The Gods'the first creation of the Krefeld, Germany based band in more than four years will be released on December 5, 2014 via Nuclear Blast. BLIND GUARDIAN vocalist Hansi Kürsch assures, "this song is a statement about BLIND GUARDIAN. The pure definition of all that the band stands for: it is innovative, melodic and brutal." And thus a perfect choice to get fans into the proper mood for the upcoming album.'Twilight Of The Gods'is a "neck breaker" in the true tradition of BLIND GUARDIAN "that will captivate you with the most epic and catchy chorus we've ever written," says Kürsch. In 'Twilight Of The Gods' BLIND GUARDIAN is singing about the deities' waning power; no such times are in sight for the band. BLIND GUARDIAN is back with a vengeance; with an impressive single from an overwhelming record!

Beyond the Red Mirror is the upcoming tenth studio album by German power metal band Blind Guardian, scheduled to be released on January 30, 2015 through Nuclear Blast. It will be the band's first album since 2010's At the Edge of Time, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career (being three days longer than the gap between 2002's A Night at the Opera and 2006's A Twist in the Myth). It will also be their first album whitout former session member Oliver Holzwarth on bass guitar since 1995's Imaginations from the Other Side.A concept album and a sequel to Imaginations from the Other Side, Beyond the Red Mirror has been described by Hansi Kürsch as "A story between science fiction and fantasy. The two worlds described have changed dramatically for the worse since then. While there used to be several passages between the worlds, there is only one gate left now: The Red Mirror. It has to be found at any cost.Beyond the Red Mirror received a positive review from Ray Van Horn, Jr. of Blabbermouth.net, who gave the album a rating of nine-and-a-half of ten and states, "Previewing their tenth album Beyond the Red Mirror with the previously-released Twilight of the Gods EP, German power-symphonic metal maestros Blind Guardian capitalize on a long break with an encompassing and magical effort. For Beyond the Red Mirror, the band worked with three different worldwide choirs from Budapest, Prague and Boston, along with two full-scale orchestras bearing 90 members apiece. Album:

Maybe it's just my perception but it seems that quite a lot of live albums have been released lately. At least more live albums than studio efforts have crossed my desk in recent months, which has given me the impression that bands are keen on preserving the material performed during recent tours for posterity. This is actually good news, especially because most of those live recordings have been of stellar quality so far. Now, the German progressive/melodic speed metal powerhouse BLIND GUARDIAN have released a live effort, which, for lack of other words, can only be described as monumental. Thirty shows were recorded during their 2015 European tour and each one was about two hours and fifteen minutes long. Thus, there was plenty of material to choose from. Being the perfectionist that he is, BLIND GUARDIAN vocalist Hansi Kürsch selected only the best recordings for the present live album. All in all, Live Beyond The Spheres contains – are you ready for this? – 22 songs recorded at ten different shows, including old classics (with the deplorable absence of “Welcome To Dying”), more recent material such as the three tracks from BLIND GUARDIAN's last studio album Beyond The Red Mirror (the opener “The Ninth Wave”, “Twilight Of The Gods” and “Prophecies”) and several songs the four-piece plus live keyboarder and bass player rarely perform in concert. This is an incredible compilation of songs but can BLIND GUARDIAN hold a candle to some of the other superb live albums that have been released this year?Yes, indeed they can. Musically, there is a lot to praise and nothing to complain about. Hansi Kürsch's characteristic and expressive vocals shine through each and every one of the 22 songs and (almost) every note is exactly where it is supposed to be. The performance of Marcus Siepen (guitar), André Olbrich (guitar), Frederik Ehmke (drums) as well as bassist Barend Courbois and keyboardist Michael "Mi" Schüren is simply brilliant and as tight as a duck's arse. Right from the intro, which nicely 'overlaps' with the opener “The Ninth Wave”, Live Beyond The Spheres is a compelling and captivating live album. BLIND GUARDIAN's music - always “serious heavy metal” (Hansi Kürsch introducing “Banish From Sanctuary”), often heavily influenced by folk music, especially by the characteristic melodies and chords progressions of Irish folk, sometimes quite progressive and occasionally a tad bombastic – never gets boring and is best enjoyed live or by means of a recording such as this one. The audience is present all the time and forms an integral part of the massive live sound, which gets the energy-laden live atmosphere sufficiently across. Considering the fact that the songs have been selected from ten shows all across Europe, the album sounds remarkably uniform and consistent. The three energy-packed CDs (or four vinyl records, your choice) will give you plenty of opportunity to dive into the BLIND GUARDIAN's fantasy world of metal music. And yet, as huge and as brilliant Live Beyond The Spheres is, I wonder whether less wouldn't have been more in this case. On the whole, the sheer number of 22 tracks, some of them six, seven, eight or even more than nine minutes long, such as the exotic and at the same time epic “Wheel Of Time”, might be a bit overwhelming and listeners who are not overly familiar with BLIND GUARDIAN may find it difficult to digest all this at once. Still, BLIND GUARDIAN fans will love this colossal live effort, novices to the German progressive/power metal outfit will have plenty of material to dig deep into the music of one of the finest metal bands of the last decades while connoisseurs of live albums in general are well advised not to miss out on this one.Maybe it's just my perception but it seems that quite a lot of live albums have been released lately. Promising to be one of the most ambitious projects in metal history, Blind Guardian's upcoming release will be well worth the wait. The idea of recording an orchestral album originally formed in the minds of the two leading lights of the Blind Guardian universe - guitarist André Olbrich and singer Hansi Kürsch - during the 90s, when Blind Guardian started to use orchestral elements to enhance their opulent sound. In recent years the giant project started to take shape and parallel to its epic sound cascades, the lyrical concept was developed. For this, Blind Guardian was able to find support in German bestselling author Markus Heitz, whose latest novel "Die Dunklen Lande" was released on March 1, 2019. The book is set in 1629 and contains the prequel to Blind Guardian's opus "Legacy Of The Dark Lands"."It's incredible, that after 20 years we can actually finish this really exciting project. I am so happy and more than satisfied with it. Every single track unveils spectacular worlds and tells its very own story. With this album our biggest creative dream finally becomes reality", says frontman/singer Hansi Kürsch whose favourite author was equally excited about the collaboration: "It's really crazy: as pen & paper role players we used to listen to Blind Guardian whilst playing. And years later I get to work together with the band, which was incredible. It's amazing, the things that can happen sometimes", Markus Heitz remembers. "Of course I immediately agreed to join! This creative collaboration is very special to me." The two protagonists have actively cultivated their creative exchange over the last five years. "Markus is a great storyteller. With "Die Dunklen Lande" he created the perfect setting and with the mysterious Nicolas, the perfect character for our complex works. His inventiveness seems to be almost infinite. Absolutely impressive and very inspiring", praises Hansi Kürsch regarding the fruitful cooperation with the highly renowned fantasy author. Both sides tell in their own way the story of the mercenary Nicolas and his involvement in the Thirty Years' War. Author Markus Heitz starts the story off in his book and Blind Guardian follow suit with "Legacy Of The Dark Lands". What is the secret surrounding Nicolas? Will he be able to cast off the chains of war and how will his loved ones fare? On "Legacy Of The Dark Lands" via Blind Guardian's Twilight Orchestra, André Olbrich and Hansi Kürsch fulfill their longtime wish of emphasizing imposing choral singing and classical orchestral arrangements. It promises to be an opus unlike any other that the German quartet has ever released, or rather: an opus, as has never been heard ever before.

Album:

There may be people out there who don't regard BLIND GUARDIAN's "Imaginations From The Other Side" as a classic heavy metal record, but those people are wrong and deserve to be publicly scorned for their foolishness. "Imaginations…" remains a lot of fans' favorite album by the Germans, not least because it seemed to confidently define the band's sound at a point when melodic bombast and theatricality were, with mainstream rock and metal folk, about as popular as genital warts. Hansi Kürsch knew differently then, and 25 years later, this triple-disc celebration of a seminal masterpiece feels like vindication on a huge scale. BLIND GUARDIAN raced to the front of the pack when this was originally released in 1995, and they remain the undisputed champions of this stuff. Listening to this deluxe extravaganza's first disc, a complete performance of the album captured in Oberhausen, Germany, in 2016, the timeless nature of the material and the diehard ethos that has propelled Kürsch's crew forward for three decades are abundantly apparent. There's still plenty of fire in the band's collective belly, and they play these revered songs as if their lives depend on it, with their leader, as ever, in the finest of voices. The second disc comprises the album itself, in its 2012 remixed and remastered form. Turbo-nerds will doubtless pore over the details and, in many cases, declare the original to be superior, but frankly the latter version sounds utterly incredible and noticeably more vital and vivid than that first draft. And of course, as many artists have pointed out over the years, the original version does still exist. You can have both. It's cool.BLIND GUARDIAN are plainly catering for the true devotees here, however, because this lavish set's third disc is a definite obsessives-only affair. With instrumental versions of the whole album and a smattering of demos, it's aimed squarely at the BG completist. Weirdly, a terrific orchestral version of "A Past and Future Secret" is chucked in at the very end, seemingly as an afterthought. Meanwhile, the very notion of listening to a Kürsch-free BLIND GUARDIAN may seem preposterous, but if you have an ear for finer details, instrumental versions of "I'm Alive", "Mordred's Song" and the rest are subtly revealing and further evidence of this band's inherent classiness. But if it's primal heavy metal thrills you crave, a Blu-Ray boasting a film of the entire "Live in Oberhausen" set completes the picture, with the undeniably exhilarating sight of masters at work, in front of a psychotically enthusiastic crowd. Not every re-packaged classic gets the treatment it deserves, but this is about as comprehensive and megafan-friendly as it gets. A lovingly crafted piece of highbrow heavy metal art, "Imaginations From The Other Side" hasn't aged a bit.

Album:

German power metallers BLIND GUARDIAN will release a new single, “Deliver Us From Evil”, on December 3 via Nuclear Blast. The song is a taste of the band’s new album, set to arrive in September 2022.“Deliver Us From Evil” will be available digitally as well as on a seven-inch single (along with the previously released “Merry Xmas Everybody” as the B-side) and digipak CD (with the previously released “Violent Shadows” Wacken World Wide 2020 live performance as extra track).BLIND GUARDIAN frontman Hansi Kürsch stated about the new single: “What can I say? We’re very happy to be able to offer you a brand new song of our forthcoming album, out in September 2022. The physical single also contains the 2020 Christmas banger ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ as well as the Wacken version of ‘Violent Shadows’ as extra on the CD, to shorten the waiting time until the new album.“Whether vinyl or CD, I can assure you that this is the perfect accessory for your Christmas tree. The strictly limited vinyl can be played on all working vinyl players and has a perfect sound — in mono and stereo. Be brave and fast and get your copy as soon as possible. Vinyl is a rare resource these days…“We know that the gap between now and the album release in late 2022 is painfully long. Neither we nor our label could defy the current worldwide economic crisis. A long story short: There is no one to blame for this situation. With ‘Deliver Us From Evil’, you will get another sweet appetizer of a very intense and vivid album that will hopefully raise your joyful anticipation until our next strike. At least, it would do it for me, but luckily I already know the whole album.“Talking about anticipation, even though ‘Violent Shadows’ and ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ are indisputably fantastic tracks, rest assured: We won’t let you wait another ten months with only two songs. I promise you that you will always be blown away. Cheers to the digital era and its endless possibilities. Oh, and the album title. There is one but I won’t tell you yet. This would be giving away far too much right now.”This past July, Kürsch told Rock Hard Greece about the musical direction of BLIND GUARDIAN’s new material: “It is by far the most intense album we did in a very, very long time. It is, in every measure, a roller-coaster ride. There is a lot of let-your-hair-down stuff — more than I expected. There are some typical surprising BLIND GUARDIAN elements. “I’m just curious to see, really, or to hear what people will think about it. I think it’s a very, very strong album. It will surprise a lot of people.“It is straight-forward in the sense of BLIND GUARDIAN, so don’t expect a straight-forward album if you compare it to anything else,” he explained. “It’s not a straight-forward album at all, but it’s very straight-forward for BLIND GUARDIAN. It’s very aggressive, it’s very dark. “The composing mostly has been accomplished before corona started to happen, but you can feel that there is a lot of anger in the album. It really delivers also very catchy and positive vibes, but there is very raw energy you will feel.”BLIND GUARDIAN’s latest release was the all-orchestral album “Twilight Orchestra: Legacy Of The Dark Lands”, which came out in November 2019 via Nuclear Blast. To create the concept, lead guitarist André Olbrich and Kürsch worked alongside German bestselling author Markus Heitz, whose latest novel, “Die Dunklen Lande”, was released in March 2019. The book is set in 1629 and contains the prequel to “Legacy Of The Dark Lands”.BLIND GUARDIAN’s last “regular” studio album, “Beyond The Red Mirror”, was issued in 2015. It was the band’s first LP since 2010’s “At The Edge Of Time”, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in BLIND GUARDIAN’s career. It was also the group’s first album without bassist Oliver Holzwarth since 1995’s “Imaginations From The Other Side”. Holzwarth has since been replaced by Barend Courbois.

Album:

"The God Machine" marks another pinnacle in Blind Guardian's impressive discography by not attempting to pretend it is still the nineties yet instead successfully relying on the muscle memory of this period. It is a gripping, addictive and brilliantly arranged album in the tradition of records with which Blind Guardian reached for the stars in the 90's; yet, by no means, is it a throwback."The God Machine" represents the heart and soul of Blind Guardian's timeless metal in the here and now, unifying the bards' past, present and future secrets in one consistent, well thought out masterpiece.
