Bio:

Palantír is an interdimensional symphonic power metal band from Sweden. The swedish band Palantír has been playing symphonic power/prog metal for the people of the multiverse since 2012 (although they were founded a couple of years before that). The loyal fanbase has grown increasingly large since the release of the debut album Lost Between Dimensions (2017) which was met with praise from some of the biggest metal magazines in the world (Sweden Rock Magazine, Burrn!).They've played numerous gigs in Sweden throughout the years and it is a sight to behold. A Palantír show is more than that, the band uses props, costumes and theatrics to help you escape reality and truly immerse yourself in the music. After the release of their debut album, Fredrik, Marcus and Emanuel started looking for new members in order to play live again. After trying out a few different lineups they are now at full capacity with the additions of Johannes, Calle and Cederick. All the members bring their own style and influences to create the unique sound of Palantír. With lyrics inspired by movies like Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, poets like Shakespeare, philosophy and simulation theory, you know you're in for a spectacular ride.

Album:

With that caveat in mind, I will now turn my attention to Lost Between Dimensions by Palantir, a self-described "inter-dimensional symphonic power metal band" from Stockholm. This Swedish trio's debut was released in September 2017 via the retro-metal specialists at Stormspell Records. The band's name comes from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien (Him again? I already reviewed one Tolkien-obsessed combo this week -- Numenor's Chronicles, also from Stormspell!), where a "Palantir" is apparently some kind of crystal ball that allows beings to communicate with one another across vast distances. I guess that explains the comic-book style cover art, which shows some kind of hooded cosmic being watching a warrior through a glowing orb. Since I've never read a word of Tolkien, I'm just going to take Google Search's word for it.(Trainspotters take note: that same Google search also revealed that there are two other "Palantir" bands out there. One is a black metal combo from Arkansas, USA, and the other is a one-man instrumental project from Germany, so buyer beware!Though Palantir is not the sort of thing that lands regularly on my musical plate, I have to admit that they've crafted some very well produced, spotlessly performed material here. Those of you who go nuts for the ultra-polished, epic Euro-power metal sound should definitely dig Lost Between Dimensions.Lost Between Dimensions opens with the rousing "To Valhalla," which falls into a nice Blind Guardian-esque groove fairly quickly. Echoes of prime Michael Kiske-era Helloween are quite evident in "Escaping Reality," which gives vocalist Markus Sannefjord-Olkerud a chance to show off his impressive pipes."War of the Worlds" has some nice chunky guitar riffing and a suitably epic sounding chorus. In fact, the entire album has a very "big," cinematic feel to it, as if these guys were trying to create a soundtrack to a mega-budget science fiction/fantasy epic. "The Dark Crystal" provides a quick 45 seconds of quality guitar shred courtesy of Fredrik Erikson-Enochson (side note: these Swedish names are playing hell with my spell check!) before launching into the chug of "Revival," the heaviest track on the album thus far.The battle between good and evil continues on "Warriors of the Sun," while "Tragicomedy" underlines the band's theatrical obsessions by comparing a person's life with a stage production. "Kings and Queens" has a nice groove, with swirling keyboards wrapping around a bed of muscular guitar riffs. The ten-minute title track closes the album and as you might expect, it's Palantir's most epic construction of all. The trio pulls out all the stops on this track, opening with some Savatage-esque plaintive piano and classical flourishes, then kicking into heavy, cosmic interstellar overdrive with sound effects and angelic choirs backing Olkerud on the huge multi-tracked choruses. On a side note, guitarist Enochson is credited with all of the bass, keyboards and "orchestration" on this album so I feel he deserves some extra props...the man's got serious skills!I enjoyed Lost Between Dimensions more than I'd initially expected when it first came across my desk. The album is a totally pro package all the way. I will probably never become a big time symph-metal head, but Palantir packed more than enough musical firepower to impress even my jaded ears.Fans of the aforementioned Blind Guardian as well as their many epic-themed spiritual godchildren like Evergrey, Kamelot, Lost Horizon, Rhapsody of Fire or Nocturnal Rites should definitely check this album out. Album:

Sweden's Palantír showed enough talent on their four-year-old debut "Lost Between Dimensions". Back then, the hilarious power metal content was handled by a mere trio of musicians, now the band has a full six members. It's a pity that there was no one among the newcomers who could point out the dubious production work with a forceful imperative.Even on the aforementioned debut the sound was not great, but this time it is even less emphatic, which on the other hand is not entirely surprising when looking at the name that is more or less responsible for everything. Cederick Forsberg (Blazon Stone, ex-Crystal Viper) has his own studio, but no sonic gems have come out of it yet. He has been entrusted with Palantír's new release "Chasing a Dream", probably because Cederick has also become the band's bassist. This time Forsberg delivered - with the production approval of his new bandmates - one of his weakest performances, irrevocably affecting the sound and reach of the album. An album that is not authorially stunning, but under optimal sound conditions could be recommended in good conscience to anyone who likes upbeat power metal with occasional acceleration and symphonic or neoclassical twists. The record starts with the song "Chasing a Dream", which sounds like something from Christian Liljegren (Narnia, The Audiovision), i.e. more hard rock for now, which will be later evident in the song "Where I Belong". Anyway, the Swedes feel better on the power metal level, which is especially evident in the tracks "Queen Of The Moon", "Among The Stars", "The Beast Within" and "Where I Belong", which do not deny the sense of subtle, gradually graded and at times top melodic tension. This is also a positive considering the fact that almost all of the aforementioned compositions were handled by different composers. The current line-up of the Nordic band is nestled with a number of capable composers, including keyboardist Johannes Frykholm, who was featured last year with the Skyblazer project and is also a member of the domestic Symphonity. There is simply no catch in composing. It is clenched in the sound production, which is at the level of the nineties, and even then it was bad. Maybe it's something you can get used to, like when your eyes get used to the darkness after a while and gradually get used to it and start to distinguish some shapes of surrounding objects. But it's never going to be an experience like the light on, let alone in direct and bright sunlight.
