Bio:

Formed in 1993 as Thundercross, and then changed name to Rhapsody in 1995. They were forced to change their name again, this time to Rhapsody of Fire, due to copyright problems on 14th of July of 2006.Before Cristiano Adacher's arrival, Luca Turilli was also the singer of the band. Thunderforce played drums from "Dawn of Victory" to "Power of the Dragonflame," but for contractual obligations his real identity could not be revealed. There was also speculation that 'Thunderforce' did not actually exist and that the drums on these albums were programmed, but the band always denied this. Alex Holzwarth, who played drums in live shows, figured in the official line-up on the CDs. Holzwarth has played all drums since "The Dark Secret" EP.Dominique Leurquin played live with Rhapsody from February 2000 until 2011, and later also performed the rhythm guitar parts on albums, but was only ever considered a 'special guest' of the band.Rhapsody's baroque recorder parts have always been played by Alex Staropoli's brother, Manuel Staropoli. On Rhapsody's earlier releases, songs often contained narration by Sir Jay Lansford. Starting with "The Dark Secret" EP, professional actors, ntably including film veteran Christopher Lee, have been used instead. Lee has also performed as co-vocalist on a few B-sides.Rhapsody's management team included Manowar's Joey DeMaio after they signed to his Magic Circle Music label, but they were later involved in a long-running legal dispute that brought all band activity to a halt between 2007 and 2009.Luca Turilli and Patrice Guers left Rhapsody of Fire on good terms in 2011, and announced in November 2011 that they would continue as Luca Turilli's Rhapsody along with Dominique Leurquin. Both versions claim the entire band history up until the split as their own. Alex Holzwarth was initially a member of both bands but left Luca Turilli's Rhapsody after the recording of their first album.Nuclear Blast dropped Rhapsody of Fire after the split and continued with Luca Turilli's Rhapsody only. After one year, in December 2012 the band then signed to the German label AFM Records.

Album:

Italian masters of the epic Symphonic Power Metal enchantment RHAPSODY OF FIRE gathered up two dozen finely-recorded variety of older and newer songs from the last "Chaos To Eternity" European Tour of 2012 under the title of "Live-From Chaos To Eternity" which is their second live album so far. It is kind of promising, since one would expect the band to weaken after the departure of founder guitarist / composer Luca Turilli, but this release just proves that the band is still there and will be releasing more stuff soon. The tracks were recorded at different venues but the whole thing still sounds homogenous and seamless. The material is perfectly raw and unpolished, nearly flawless though, just like the band intended it to be. "Not one single part was re-recorded in studio as most of bands do", comments the mastermind Alex Staropoli. The music is as powerful, epic, enchanting and passionate as one would expect from a band like RHAPSODY. Fabio Lione delivers an outstanding and excellent vocal performance as usual, and just keeps proving why he's one of the most highly-acclaimed Power Metal singers on the planet. The tracklist is awesome, combining new songs from the most recent albums as well as the finest Rhapsody classic gems such as "Holy Thunderforce", "Dawn of Victory", "The Village Of Dwarves", "Emerald Sword"…as well as a drum solo and Bach's "Toccata" on bass. The only downside is that mix is a bit unbalance, for instance, at some point, Lione can barely be heard, or the keyboards are too loud. It's nevertheless something that RHAPSODY OF FIRE fans would appreciate. Highly recommended!

Album:

Luca Turilli, mastermind behind countless bands, from which you could objectively make only one band because their style is almost identical, after 15 long years left Rhapsody Of Fire. And instead of naming his new band something original, he calls himeself Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. Ingenious. But not all is black and white. The LTR has remained true to its symphonic power metal sound, with rich production and grandiose compositions, while the ROF without Luca went in another, more fierce and heavy direction. No, they haven’t started to play death metal, but the riffs are heavier by far, solos are more pronounced, the sound is cleaner and simpler, and keyboards were given a tad smaller role. It’s still ROF, but difference in sound is obvious. You can even hear the bass on some songs, hehe.Album starts with useless introduction as one comes to expect from symphonic power metal album. But then comes a surprise: “Rising From Tragic Flames“ will leave you in a bit of a shock. After two listens, when convinced it’s Rhapsody you’re listening to, you will be able to tell whether you’ll like the album or not. The song that elegantly flirts with heavy metal makes it clear in which direction the band is going. New guitarist, De Micheli, obviously didn’t want to just copy what Luca was doing – and that’s a positive thing – because a little heavier sound fits the band. I do not want you to think that they went to play in the style of Slayer or something like that, refrains are still typical for this genre and ROF, choirs are still howling melodic songs about typical fantasy stuff, but they are no longer driven by bunch of keyboards with a glimpse of guitars, quite the opposite. True, all elements that were essential parts of Rhapsody sound are still present, but their importance is a little different. In other words, if perverse amount of keyboards was annoying you, now is the time to give Rhapsody another shot.As for the songs themselves, „My Sacrifice” is longest song on the record and probably biggest reminder of past times. Unfortunately, there is no real value in it, and aside from some nice instrumental parts with pleasant melodies this song has no lasting value. “Silver Lake Of Tears” is cliché of clichés and also not worth mentioning. On the other hand, they fit along well when listening album as a whole, so nobody will probably be bothered by them.“Custode di Pace” sung in Italian is really cool to hear because of its diversity along with, well, every other song. Aside from two mentioned above, I have no real complaint on this record. The last three songs on the album make a very good ending. They are not too long, and have good instrumental pieces with memorable choruses. Nothing revolutionary, but you will want to play them again. “Sad Mystic Moon“, being my favorite track on this record is, along-side with “Emerald Sword“, my all time fav Rhapsody Of Fire song.I won’t describe other songs, you will have to listen to them anyway so go and get your copy of Dark Wings Of Steel. Maybe it’s not best album in the world, but no fan of symphonic power metal should regret getting it!

Album:

Italian symphonic metal kings RHAPSODY OF FIRE will release their new studio album, "Into The Legend", in January 2016 via AFM Records.Comments RHAPSODY OF FIRE keybaordist Alex Staropoli: "After two years of intense work, including composing and arranging, after seven months spent in four different studios, this huge and ambitious production is coming to an end. We are right now mixing the songs, going through hundreds and hundreds hours of recordings to make an album that will feature over 65 minutes of breathtaking music, an album that will gather and exploit the best elements this band ever had in a modern way, and to build a musical landscape that will have no equals in the world's heavy metal scene."RHAPSODY OF FIRE in June 2013 "respectfully" parted ways with their American guitarist Tom Hess due to "philosophical differences."RHAPSODY OF FIRE released a live album, "Live - From Chaos To Eternity", on May 3, 2013 in Europe and May 7, 2013 in the USA via AFM Records. It was made available as two-CD digipak and as limited three-vinyl set. The material (a mixture of old classics and newer tracks) was recorded on the band’s European tour in spring 2012.Staropoli and RHAPSODY OF FIRE guitarist Luca Turilli in 2011 announced their decision to go their separate ways.Due to legal reasons, Staropoli is continuing under the RHAPSODY OF FIRE name. Turilli, on the other hand, is making his efforts available under the RHAPSODY moniker (RHAPSODY OF FIRE's original name), in which he is joined by guitarist Dominique Leurquin, bassist Patrice Guers, singer Alessandro Conti (TRICK OR TREAT) and drummer Alex Landenburg (AT VANCE, ANNIHILATOR, MEKONG DELTA, STRATOVARIUS).

Album:

A legend continues in impressive fashion: Italian symphonic power metal kings Rhapsody Of Fire have rerecorded their biggest classic songs of the Rhapsody years (1997-2002) with enormous effort and a huge result. Mixed and mastered by Seeb Levermann (Orden Ogan).Compilations are, sometimes, boring and truly disgusting. In many cases, this kind of disc is just a way to take the last coins of the fans, especially when the band has nothing new to present. To the greater part of compilations in the “The Best Of” way, this is an undeniable truth. But in few cases, there are some compilations that are truly good, has something different to present. This is the case of “Legendary Years”, the new release of the Italian heroes from RHAPSODY OF FIRE.It seems a good intention: in “Legendary Years”, the band re-recorded some songs from the most creative and successful era, from the period of 1997 to 2002, and with the actual lineup. To speak in another way, it’s a way to present the new vocalist Giacomo Voli and new drummer Manuel Lotter. Maybe it’s a statement that the band will go on without Fabio Lione, who left the band in 2016. As well, it’s an extremely courageous album, because to have Giacomo singing old classics of the band is not only a way to say that RHAPSODY OF FIRE is alive, but to show the fans how the things will go with the new vocalist. Let’s be honest: with the great intolerance that Metal fans show to vocalists’ changes (bands as IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST and ICED EARTH suffered a lot for this), to record such kind of album is a sign of courage! The sound production of “Legendary Years” is near perfection. Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann did a great job on the mixing and the mastering, and the quality of the sound that flows by our speakers is truly excellent. You’ll get the best of the songs clearly. The artwork of Alexandre Charleux for the cover is really great, and the message is clear: the gates for a new era for the band and its fans are coming. Another factor that can be the cause of the band release of “Legendary Years” is the actual reunion tour of RHAPSODY with Fabio and Lucca, for it could cause confusion in the minds of the fans. But here on the album is the true essence of the band’s music. I must be true: I really know that Fabio’s voice is amazing, but Giacomo a great singer as well. The are some classics that are amazing on their new versions, and “Dawn of Victory”, “Flames of Revenge”, “Land of Immortals”, “Emerald Sword”, “Legendary Tales”, “When Demons Awake”, “Holy Thunderforce” and “Rain of a Thousand Flames” are songs that speak for themselves. They are classics that all the band’s fans know and sing on the shows. But I think that songs as “Warrior of Ice”, “The Wisdom of the Kings”, “The Might Ride of the Firelord” and some others could be included on the album. Yes, I know it would be necessary to have a double CD, but who cares? RHAPSODY OF FIRE deserves!Ending my words, I believe that the band is really strong and amazing with this new lineup, and “Legendary Years” is here as proof that the Italian kings are back.

Album:

As an avid player of Dungeons & Dragons in my formative years, I quickly realized that as an RPG soundtrack my Van Halen records just weren’t cutting the mustard. My brother’s Deep Purple and Rush records fared better, and regarding the latter, I was thrilled that they name-checked TSR Games in the liner notes of ‘Moving Pictures’, even if in true weird Canadian fashion it was the Top Secret spy game. My unholy prayers were answered in the late 1980’s, however, when I discovered Dio and the more contextually appropriate, Yngwie Malmsteen. In my mind, the first three Yngwie records in particular really bridge the gap between early metal and neoclassical power metal. And while I largely sidestepped power metal throughout my college years, nostalgia got the best of me in my late 20s when I joined an AD&D campaign and discovered Rhapsody (of Fire), the penultimate fantasy gaming soundtrack. The first in a series of records that revolve around a concept called the “Nephilim’s Empire Saga”, Rhapsody of Fire’s (RoF) new record ‘The Eighth Mountain’, out February 22, 2019 on AFM Records, features a revitalized lineup eager to regain the iron throne. After the appropriate grandeur of an intro that unveils a fruitful partnership with the Bulgarian National Symphony Orchestra, a string of proper songs reinforces RoFs mastery of tension and release. The band’s marriage of heavy riffs and catchy choruses with classically informed chord structures, choral and orchestral embellishments, and shrewd keyboard shades and flourishes highlight the band’s next-level songcraft. From the breakneck speed of “Master of Peace’s” badass intro riff to the minor key arpeggios of “Seven Heroic Deeds’” chorus, these initial ragers set a lofty precedent. On his third record with the band, guitarist Roby De Micheli’s nimble guitar runs of “Rain of Fury’s” solo break and subsequent melodic wind down are particularly indicative of the high levels of proficiency each player brings to the performance. The bittersweet melodies and moody shifts between major and minor keys of “The Courage to Forgive” exemplify the epically adventurous nature of these tunes. Last remaining original member Alex Staropoli’s expert keyboard work does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to atmosphere, and he is more than ably backed by a band that is rounded out by seasoned bassist Alessandro Sala, and newcomer’s drummer Manu Lotte and vocalist Giacomo Voli.Elsewhere, “White Wizard,” a mid-tempo slice of melodic fantasy metal, adds some subtle textures to its epic plea for the White Wizard to “atone for us,” “guide our souls” and “foresee our future storms.” “The Legend Goes On” is another standout track with some particularly awesome keyboard work, that like all songs in the set benefits from the modern, ultra-clean sheen of Staropoli’s production.Standout track “March Against the Tyrant” gallops into the world on the fleet-footed hooves of a classic metal riff before guitar arpeggios break through the din and lead the way into the pastoral meditation of the verse. Voli, whose voice is eerily similar to departed vocalist Fabio Lione, albeit slightly thinner and with a bit more grit, interjects this and all of the tunes on the record with a level of grandeur and urgency that should satisfy longtime fans of the band. When, like a power metal obsessed Gordon Lightfoot, Voli sings “dawn shining clouds and mountains, a cold morning wind makes me tear and think of you,” it makes me want to make love to an elf-eared Liv Tyler in the rolling New Zealand countryside. Not everything on the record slays the wicked leviathan. Some of the songs are predictable in their dauntless scope. “Warrior Heart” the requisite renaissance folk ballad while well-executed might be the low water mark for a record that generally springs deep. With “Tales of a Hero’s Fate”, RoF have unequivocally saved the best for last. The intro, which is all electric guitars, choirs, and orchestra, morphs into the gallop of a pre-verse riff that is highlighted by orchestral hits. The verse proper features some unnecessary but fairly well-executed growling vocals, and leads the way into the kind of well flowing series of choruses and pre-choruses that are typical of the set. Around the 4:30 mark, an epic minor key bridge adds a sense of foreboding before a major key harmonized lead guitar introduces a full-on progressive riff-fest that alternates between flashy instrumental riffs and solos and tension building vocal choruses and keyboard and orchestral flourishes. Having not read the LPs press release prior to initial listens, imagine my surprise when the ascending guitar lines of the final riff came to an abrupt halt, and the great Sir Christopher Lee’s unmistakable voice broke the silence. In this posthumous narration, the true “White Wizard” “guides our souls” through the journey’s end, marking another excellent entry into RoF’s consistent discography. On their 12th full-length record, ‘The Eighth Mountain’, Rhapsody of Fire casts a familiar yet powerful spell that should have fans of epic fantasy metal clamoring for their 20-sided dice.

Album:

2019’s The Eighth Mountain (which featured the first saga in the band’s history not written by Luca Turilli) was a rousing symphonic metal success for the reborn Rhapsody of Fire and now, the group look to cement their future with Glory for Salvation.Acting as the second chapter of The Nephilim’s Empire Saga, which began with The Eighth Mountain. The saga centers on the argument of redemption and the valour of life. The hero is aware of his mistakes, wants to remedy them in order to seek redemption, and to fight for what is right.Glory for Salvation will be released on the 26th November 2021 via AFM Records. While not a huge fan of Rhapsody of Fire overall, we massively respect them and found 2019’s The Eighth Mountain to be a thoroughly enjoyable slice of symphonic/power metal. So, there’s a fair bit more excitement surrounding this new release. After all, regardless of line-up changes, the power metal credentials of this band can’t be faulted. If you’ve forgotten just how epic this band can be, opener Son of Vengeance will quickly remind you. A bombastic start that has that delicious Rhapsody of Fire lavishness we all crave so much. That liveliness is even more present on the thumping The Kingdom of Ice, where the symphonic and power metal mesh together wonderfully. Before the title track will have you dreaming of magnificent battles and heroic feasts, and Eternal Snow really looks to enhance the concept with wind instruments and spoken word storytelling.Which flows into Terial the Hawk; a folk-infused bout of vigour and melodic highs. One of the more straightforward ‘fun’ tracks on the album. The upbeat extravagance then continues into Maid of the Secret Sand. Where punchy guitar riffing engages wonderfully with Giacomo Voli’s amazing vocals. Is this 2021’s grandest track? A gorgeous slice of cinematic-esque power metal with spell-binding symphonic melodies and a surprise twist of harsher, darker vocals briefly. The word ‘epic’ is overused when it comes to Rhapsody of Fire but it’s the only one that comes to mind when you hear a track this massive. How do you follow that? If you’re Rhapsody of Fire you follow that with more concise, but just as extravagant, symphonic power metal. Infinitae Gloriae delivering a chest-beating and fist-pumping head-banger, Magic Signs’ then calms things down with a moving power-ballad and the upbeat, sing-along that is I’ll Be Your Hero puts a big smile on the face. The latter has a ‘finale’ flavour to it, but they’re not quite done yet.We still have Chains of Destiny to enjoy. A track with unrestrained power metal liveliness in a very classic Rhapsody of Fire way. Un’Ode Per L’Eroe is another power ballad (the title translates to An Ode to a Hero) sung in Italian. Before the gigantic album wraps up with the delightfully sweet La Esencia De Un Rey (translates to The Essence of the King).Another excellent entry in the Rhapsody of Fire catalogue.
