Bio:

HIGHLORD was founded in Turin, Italy, with the former monicker Avatar in 1997, and the first line up was composed by Stefano Droetto on guitars, Alessandro Muscio on keyboards, Fabio Savella on drums, Enrico Grande on bass guitar and vocalist Roberto Messina, the latter also doubling front man duties with Secret Sphere. Within a few months Grande quit the band and Diego De Vita joined in to record the first, self-titled demo. The tape led the band to a deal with the label Underground Symphony that signed them to record a debut album in 1998. Changes were afoot, though, and not only would the band change its monicker from Avatar to Highlord, but it also substituted Messina with the new front man Vascé. In the midst of these tribulations the label and group also severed ties. The label Northwind Records took the band in its roster, and the debut album 'Heir Of Power' was eventually recorded in Torino's Musical Box recording studio. This initial Symphonic Speed Metal outing fared well and provided the catalyst for a string of gigs across Italy with such acts as Domine, Skylark and Secret Sphere. After this round of live activity Savella left in May 2000, and Luca "T-1000" Pellegrino joined in.Highlord's July 2001 opus 'When The Aurora Falls...' was recorded at the renowned New Sin Studios, and the Japanese version would feature two bonus tracks, namely 'The Eclipse' and 'Will Of A King'. Extra exposure to the album was given by the inclusion of some songs on the soundtrack of two horror movies: 'The Werewolf Chronicles' and 'Blood Of The Werewolf'. Vascé quit the band in 2001, and the power act's Desdemona vocalist Andrea Marchisio entered the band for the recording of the third album for Northwind Records, 'Breath Of Eternity', which was released in May 2001. The Japanese version, once again licensed by Soundholic Records, featured the metal version of the anime song 'Pegasus Fantasy'.In 2002 Highlord contributed to Steelborn Records' 'Revenge - The Triumph of… Tribute to Manowar', with the song 'Thor', from the album 'Sign of the Hammer', featuring Sister Witch on vocals. In July 2002 Highlord took part in the second issue of 'Keepers of Jericho', a tribute to Helloween released by the Spanish label Arise Records, performing the song 'Power', from the album 'The time of the Oath'.The fourth album 'Medusa's Coil', also recorded at New Sin Studios, was released in May 2004 by Arise Records. Japanese variants added the customary extra track, 'Tough Boy', cover of the famous anime 'Hokuto No Ken', along with a karaoke version of the same. The band recorded their version of Stratovarius' 'Against The Wind' for Steelborn Records, for a 2004 tribute album, entitled 'Within Infinity - Tribute to Stratovarius'.Highlord's self-produced fifth album, entitled 'Instant Madness', was recorded at Labyrinth's drummer Mat Stancioiu Elnor Studios, and it was released in April 2006 in Japan via Soundholic Records, these version including the bonus track 'Cha La Head Cha La' from the anime 'Dragon Ball Z'. Mythic Silence Records released the album in the USA in June.In 2007, the keyboard player and founding member Alessandro Muscio decided to quit the band for personal reasons, and the band found a temporary substitute in Giacomo Roggia, who played live throughout 2007-2008, but was eventually substituted by Emanuele "Mr. Triton" Salsa in the late 2009.The group re-entered New Sin Studios in May 2009 to record the tracks for the sixth album 'The Death Of The Artists'. Bonus tracks included the cover versions of Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell' and 'Zankokuna Tenshi No Teeze' from the anime 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'.Throughout 2009 and 2010 Highlord played many live shows, such as Steel Roses MC bikers' fest in Sardinia and Rock Inn Somma 2010 open air with Thunderstorm and Necrodeath. After the release of this album, bass player Diego De Vita left, and his place was taken by Dying Awkward Angel's Daniele Veronese. In may 2012, the band recorded their seventh album, 'The Warning After' in New Sin Studios; the album was released in 2013 by Punishment 18 Records, and licensed in North America through End of the Light Records. This album displays a beautiful cover by the famous artist Felipe Machado, and it also features Primal Fear's singer Ralf Scheepers as a guest on the vocals of the song 'Arcade Warriors'. The bonus tracks for the American market are the main theme of 'Power Rangers' 'Go Go! Power Rangers' and 'Bloody Tears Castlevania', instrumental theme from the popular arcade game 'Castlevania'. Soon after the record was released, bass player Daniele Veronese had to left the band for health reasons; his place was taken by Sound Storm's bassist Massimiliano Flak.During 2012-2014 Highlord played both gigs and open air festivals like Rock Inn Somma 2013, and it also shared the stage with important Italian and international bands, such as Circle II Circle, Dark Moor, Freedom Call, Pino Scotto, Vision Divine, Elvenking, Sacred Steel, Seventh Wonder and more.In June 2014, founding member Stefano Droetto quit the band for personal reasons; Highlord found his replacement in Francesco Lombardo, young axeman of Myriad Lights.Presently the band is working on the songs of their eighth album, which will probably be released in the beginning of 2015. Important lineup changes are leading to a refreshment of the sound, which will always be Heavy-Power Metal, but with heavier and more Symphonic influences that will add many interesting facets to the classic Highlord sound.

Album:

I believe that has been almost thirteen years since the last time I listened to a full length made by the Italian HIGHLORD. It was their second album, with the band’s earlier lineup, named “When The Aurora Falls…”. Not that I didn’t check out the band when I got the chance, listening to a track here and there, but in order to grasp the material, a few separate tracks won’t cut it. Therefore, the coming of “The Warning After”, quite a mysterious title, via the band’s new local label Punishment 18 Records, gave me a chance to hear out this longtime band in full once again. The 90s Euro Power Metal alignments seemed to have been long gone in favor of a somewhat modern touches of sound along with various of additional influences, side by side the melodic, straight out, Heavy / Power Metal flavors of the 80s, such as minor Thrash elements related to MEGADETH and crunchy Hard Rock in vein of EUROPE. Though late 90s Power Metal turned a few stones back in the day, HIGHLORD’s addition since the sophomore albums didn’t remain unnoticed. In comparison to the band, “The Warning After” sounded way more mature, slightly darker, updated, and less heroic than the nativity of the past. Not that I have anything against letting the imagination run wild, while being affected by legends and myths, but sometimes you have to life the curtain, maybe a few inches up, in order for the listener to comprehend your messages. Musically, the song changed its tune and didn’t remain the same. The material didn’t feel loosen, several of the songs rose above from the one dimensional state of the earlier streams and seemed more thought over, conditioning the tunes to share a much broadened collection of ideas. Well, HIGHLORD didn’t cross into a path of progression, yet there is an evidence for advancement turning into the later versions of KAMELOT and ANGRA.“The Goggle Mirror”, a superb track, and the album’s greater achiever, for me this is the band’s new mindset. There is thickened layer of Power Metal, but also supplied and driven by grooves and mid tempo rhythms bearing slick riffing. Chorus wise, it is melodically motivated, scraping with great catchy lines, portraying a subsequent C part and the readiness for an inspiring solo. “No More Heroes” pretty much following the same idea as the latter track, yet HIGHLORD turned up the melodies a notch, creating sensational melodic patterns and fine harmonies supporting the goods of the multi layered chorus. For some reason there wasn’t seem that need for keyboards, which could have been a little more passive. Furthermore, this track breaks the common structure planning several surplus junctures. “In This Wicked World”, an anthem of the new domain. It is a sort of a shout out to remain on a constant guard of what might happen next, maybe the contemporary nation in fear. I could send the entanglement of STRATOVARIUS along with early ANGRA. The solo made an impact on this song nonetheless, alongside the anthem chorus that is highly memorable. “Arcade Warriors”, might serve as a reminder that of an innocence or perhaps a bit of a dream world? Could be, but I am only speculating. Possibly this is the band’s traditional Power Metal oriented song of late, yet not in full. This one sinking its teeth deep and even Ralph Scheepers (PRIMAL FEAR) rallied up to join the fun with his highly acclaimed high pitched vocals. Sadly that the song has a middle numb part right before the harmonic guitars kicked in, the keyboards’ display was fairly boring.“The Warning After”, in overall, is fine piece of work. It felt craftier than the band’s older era of straightforwardness, moderately melodic and also diverse. However, I also felt the lack of dominance of the vocals. Sure that the longtime frontman, Andrea Marchisio, is above your common melodic Metal / Hard Rock vocalist, especially when his singing in the vein of Timo Kotipelto and Andre Matos. Maybe it was how his lines were mixed with the rest of the channels, but it felt too thin at times, lacking power. While listening to “Arcade Warriors”, with Scheepers’ involvement, I realized how my notion fitted. Furthermore, HIGHLORD might have proceeded beyond with their material, but I wouldn’t call everything that mind blowing or thrilling. Certainly not average, but a bit behind being called to be classics. In short, this is not for Power Metal fans only, I recommend on having your way with it.

Album:

It's remarkable when you think about it. Italy's Highlord has been around 20 years and, for personnel, the band has been a revolving door. Not a single member of the current band is an original and founding member, and I'm quite sure every album has had a different lineup. Yet, the band continues on and they return with their eighth album, Hic Sunt Leones which is Latin for "Here there are lions."What remains constant is Highlord's commitment to melodic and heavy power metal embellished by keyboard provided symphonic orchestration. In other words, this is quick-paced, hard charging, and bombastic heavy metal. They are from Italy after all. Now, I haven't listened to a Highlord album since 2009's Death Of The Artists, but I don't recall them ever using dirty or death vocals. Well, you'll find them here, at least, as I could determine, on two songs: One World At A Time and Let There Be Fire. Experimentation, I guess. They're kind of crappy. It doesn't help either that Andrea Marchisio's vocals, though melodic and clean, aren't all that articulate. You really can't understand him. Even within the quieter ballad with acoustic guitar you have to strain to understand him. Otherwise, musically speaking, if you like symphonic power metal with lots of classic, soaring guitar solos and some synth flourishes, you will enjoy another Highlord album. Top picks: Be King Or Be Killed, Wrong Side Of Sanity, and Once Were Immortal.

Album:

Rockshots Records is proud to announce the signing of power metallers Highlord for the release of the album "Freakin' Out Of Hell". Infusing heavy/power metal with progressive and symphonic influences the band was formed in Turin Italy in 1997. Over the span of its career the band has released eight albums, contributed to two tribute albums for Manowar and Helloween, has toured all over Europe and performed with Zak Steven's Circle II Circle, Dark Moor, Freedom Call, Pino Scotto, Vision Divine, Elvenking, Sacred Steel, Seventh Wonder and more along with music featured on movie soundtracks for The Werewolf Chronicles and Blood Of The Werewolf. For the 9th album "Freakin' Out Of Hell", recordings took place between May 2020 and December 2021. The album includes 11 tracks of pure power metal in perfect Highlord style, but with a much more aggressive sound and a touch of prog metal. Again the album has been recorded, mixed, mastered and produced in-house by bass player Massimiliano Flak at Evolution Recording Studio (Italy). The album's artwork was created by Harley Velasquez on a concept by Highlord. The band adds: "Freakin' Out Of Hell is a solid work from every point of view. Not only the songs are all potential singles, they also have more or less the same average length of 4 to 5 minutes. We avoided recording the classic long suite just as much as the hit-and-run happier song because in this album we have found the perfect balance between all the elements of our sound. We have also set the average level of heaviness and aggression a bit higher; this is not a happy metal record, it's a heavy metal piece that fully deserves this definition."
