Bio:

Gamma Ray is a power metal band from Hamburg, northern Germany, founded and fronted by Kai Hansen after his departure from the German power metal band Helloween. Hansen is the current lead vocalist, guitarist as well as the chief songwriter of Gamma Ray. The band is known as one of the most prominent bands of the German heavy metal scene. In 1988, after four years with the German power metal band Helloween, guitarist and songwriter Kai Hansen decided, for reasons that are still the subject of much debate, to leave the group. Hansen claimed that Helloween had become too big for him to handle, although the group's troubles with financial issues and their record company, Noise Records, most likely played a part as well. He proceeded to do some studio work with German power metal band Blind Guardian and in 1989 decided to form his own project with long-time friend Ralf Scheepers, former vocalist of the band Tyran Pace. This two-man project grew into a four-man band with the addition of Uwe Wessel on bass and Mathias Burchardt on drums. This was the first line-up of Gamma Ray, bearing a sound understandably close to that of Helloween of that period.

Album:

Heading for Tomorrow is the first studio album released by German power metal band, Gamma Ray on 19 February 1990 by Noise Records. It was recently announced that all of Gamma Ray's albums will be re-released throughout 2015, including extensive booklets and a lot of bonus materials. The photo below features band leader Kai Hansen busy in a trip back to the tapes days working on the extra material for the first Gamma Ray reissue. More news soon.Heading For Tomorrow was initially released as a Kai Hansen solo album. By extracting the LP out of its sleeve, “Heading For Tomorrow” revealed its “secret intention” (it was still the days of LP, or is it again?) revealing a second cover, introducing Kai’s new baby: Gamma Ray.After the global critical success of Empire Of The Undead, Kai Hansen has decided to continue the collaboration with Eike Freese and Alex Dietz (Heaven Shall Burn), the production team. Kai Hansen has spent hundred hours, digitalising and remastering hundreds of tapes, alternative versions and ideas that were so far jealously hidden in Gamma Ray’s private archive.Adds Hansen: “I am incredibly thankful that after 25 fantastic years of Gamma Ray, I am still standing here, making music and performing on stage. It's awesome to see that fans from the first days keep on supporting us and that we still make new friends. It’s something you can't take for granted. After my departure from Helloween, it all could have gone the other way as well. Instead, we continue to make albums and tour the world. That's close to unbelievable! Working on the first reissue for Heading For Tomorrow brought back so many great memories and Ralf and I dug out some funny stories. Two years ago, our studio, our harbour in Hamburg, burnt down and a lot of memorabilia and original tapes were lost, but we all searched our private archives and managed to find some great rarities and hopefully some highlights for the fans. We are proud to release our little babies in a new style with a brand new cover artwork done by Hervé Monjeaud and a new sound, a fantastic remastering done by Eike Freese and Alex Dietz.”Kai Hansen is today the voice of Gamma Ray but it is important to remember that in the beginning of Gamma Ray’s history Kai had planned to focus on his role of songwriter and guitar player. If the original album still shines also thanks to the vocals of Ralf Scheepers, the second CD offers real treasures for all Gamma Ray fans, like the original demos of songs like “Money”, “Sail On”, “Heaven Can Wait” or “The Silence” featuring Hansen on vocals.

Album:

Heading for the East was recorded in 1990 by the German power metal band Gamma Ray following the release of their album Heading for Tomorrow. It was with great surprise that in 1988 Kai Hansen decided to leave Helloween: the band he co-founded and that reached a very high level of success in a very few years, ending up infl uencing and challenging the bands that were once the original inspiration for a group of talented and gifted young rock musicians from Hamburg. Kai Hansen and Helloween quickly moved from the rehearsal room to the most prestigious metal festivals and got used to the feeling of being in the charts all over the world.Hansen left Halloween just when the band had fi nally reached international stardom and after having won the appreciation of metal giants such as Iron Maiden who often publicly championed the German band. Hansen and Halloween are now very good friends, often sharing the stage, but back then the divorce was a proper rock and roll acrimonious one: a true shock for the metal scene. The reasons that brought Kai Hansen to leave the band are still the subject of interviews and fans debate. Many years later, it is very obvious that as much as Kai Hansen and Halloween had left a mark with seminal albums, his destiny was to lead his own band.25 years after the official debut, Gamma Ray and earMUSIC have started a monumental work to re-release the entire production by Gamma Ray in deluxe double CDs.The original albums will be re-presented in new shining, remastered version on the fi rst disc (with the inclusions of all B-sides) while the second CD will be dedicated to old live recordings, demos digitalised for the fi rst time from the original tapes saved by all members of the band, alternative versions and recent studio and live recordings.Initially released as a Kai Hansen solo album, Heading For Tomorrow revealed its intention after extracting the LP out of its sleeve (it was still the days of LP, or is it again?): A second cover was hidden inside the LP, revealing the name of the newborn band: Gamma Ray. A band that was destined to stay and to conquer a loyal fanbase all over the world. After the global critical success of Empire Of The Undead , Kai Hansen has decided to continue the collaboration with the production team made of Eike Freese and Alex Dietz (Heaven Shall Burn).Together with Kai, the duo has been working on digitalising and remastering hundreds of tapes, alternative versions and ideas that were so far hidden in Gamma Ray private archive.

Album:

Gamma Ray has been around for 25 years and to celebrate the event earMUSIC has decided to re-release some of their albums in a special anniversary edition with lots of extra material to justify the purchase. The album I have in front of me is their sophomore album “Sigh No More”, the follow up to the very successful debut album “Heading for Tomorrow”. Originally released in 1991, it shows a harder and heavier side of Kai Hansen’s universe. The album contains many Gamma Ray classics: “Changes”, “Rich and Famous”, “One with the World” and “Dream Healer” and shows a band with a clear direction and identity. Some claim they peaked with this album, I beg to differ, but do think that this is one of their best albums. The songs on the anniversary edition have been remastered and the bonus disc includes many old gems, but no new songs or anything special. And some might wonder if you really need four new editions of “Dream Healer”.A fine re-release of one of the better power metal albums from 1991. Not a release you absolutely need to buy unless you are missing it in your collection or absolutely need to have everything that involves Kai Hansen.

Album:

2016, Deluxe Digipack 2-CD Re-Issue 2016 of the album from 1993, remastered and with line notes. The bonus CD includes unreleased demo tracks, live- und studiorecordings. INSANITY AND GENIUS is the third studio album by Gamma Ray and final album with Ralf Scheepers on vocals. Kai Hansen sings on the song ,,Heal Me", Dirk Schlächter sings on the song ,,Your Tørn Is Over". ,,Last Before The Storm" and ,,Your Turn Is Over" are two the most fierce and blasting power metal songs, made of blazing and raw riffs, powerful vocals, faster tempo and excellent guitar solos. ,,18 Years" is complex and a bit progressive ballad. The mood changes from calm to some aggressive parts, and faster tempo in the last minutes of the song. ,,Insanity And Genius" is the only very dark and complex song. It has doom metal feel, but with faster tempo, and tempo varies constantly. They wanted to show you how insanity exactly sounds like, and they did it well.

Album:

25 years of Gamma Ray – 25 years of heavy metal from Hamburg: what started out in spring 1990 with the release of their debut album “Heading For Tomorrow” has achieved international fame a quarter of a century later. Tours around the globe with sold-out shows in the US, Canada, South America, Asia and the whole of Europe plus appearances at the most renowned festivals worldwide – vocalist/guitarist Kai Hansen’s band has long taken the world by storm. In view of this impressive stocktaking on the occasion of their anniversary, there’s a special reason to rejoice for their international fan community: the band’s full back catalogue will be rereleased over the course of a year. All albums will be available as premium-quality digipaks including newly designed cover artwork. To cut a long story short: Gamma Ray are celebrating their anniversary in style, and all their fans are invited! When Gamma Ray took to the stage at the Hamburg Docks on 25 September 1993 to record the show for their scheduled live video “Lust For Live” (at that time available only on VHS cassette), the musicians Kai Hansen, Ralf Scheepers, Dirk Schlächter, Jan Rubach and Thomas Nack immediately enthralled their fans with their furioso performance. The Docks saw them unleash the primeval energy which had built up during the lavish studio production of their third studio album “Insanity And Genius”. The opener ´Tribute To The Past` immediately proved why Gamma Ray’s shows have been considered a Mecca for metal fans worldwide since the group was launched in spring 1989: as powerful and haunting as the band may sound on their studio albums – live on stage, Gamma Ray have always surpassed their studio performances.Naturally, for Gamma Ray the Hamburg show in September 1993 was special in every respect. Not only because it took place in the group’s home city but also because the band presented their new line-up to their fans for the first time. On top of all that, the set list that night was impressive: along with brand-new numbers such as ´Tribute To The Past`, ´Insanity And Genius` ´Last Before The Storm` and their back then current single release ´Future Madhouse`, Hansen, Scheepers, Schlächter and new additions Rubach and Nack also delivered a breathtaking Helloween medley featuring the songs ´I Want Out`, ´Future World` and ´Ride The Sky`. In addition, Kai Hansen performed ´Heal Me` as a vocal duet with Ralf Scheepers, already hinting at the personnel change which was to follow a few months later. What nobody anticipated that night at the Docks: this was to be the band’s last official recording featuring Scheepers. A few months later, Gamma Ray parted ways with their frontman from the south of Germany, Hansen doubling as vocalist ever since and the show at the Docks being the first time since his 1985 Helloween debut album “Walls Of Jericho” that he simultaneously played the guitar and sang lead vocals in a band.“Looking back more than 20 years, you can’t help but smile,” Hansen confesses. “We were like things possessed, playing almost every song either too fast or too hard, some of them both. We sounded like some kind of metal tornado. There was pure euphoria among the band members at that time.”The 2016 anniversary re-release of “Lust For Live” was mastered by producer/sound engineer Eike Freese (Dark Age, Deep Purple) and will be available on CD for the first time.

This two-man project grew into a four-man band with the addition of Uwe Wessel on bass and Mathias Burchardt on drums. This was the first line-up of Gamma Ray, bearing a sound understandably close to that of Helloween of that period.

Album:

God damn, when this album came out I was amazed. One of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was that Kai Hansen (musically) admitted with this album that the previous two Gamma Ray albums were actually a mistake. One often gets that feeling when a band suddenly and drastically returns to their roots.First of all, with Kai back behind the microphone the album automatically started to sound more like old Helloween than previous ‘Ray albums. Secondly the compositions were no longer just a tribute to the past but a real return.I don’t think he and the band wrote this old shool power metal album for selling out aka earning more money. Hansen has never been about that. And even so, in 1995 old school power metal wasn’t really that popular anymore. It took a few years before that scene started to flourish again. So his heart and soul just went there I guess. Fortunately so! He decided to write what he writes best. Good for him! He also sounds as if he’s having so much fun again on this album. So now you have an idea of the style but how good is the actual album? Well I played this album every day for a few months! So that says enough. Of course there are a few fillers but most of the songs are very excellent. Opener “Rebellion in Dreamland” is epic and dynamic. It has become a Gamma Ray classic for obvious reasons. Even though this song is marvellous it isn’t even my favorite song here!“Man on a Mission” is the song we’ve all been waiting for since “Ride The Sky”. Heavier and faster than anything from the Keeper era yet more melodic than the Walls Of Jericho period. This song is beyond good. This song is divine! To this day I even think this is the best power metal song from Gamma Ray ever.Other speed/power metal highlights include “Gods Of Deliverance” and “Salvation Calling”. Though not as good as “…Mission” these songs are fast, melodic and very catchy!Another true highlight is the threesome “Land of the Free”, “The Saviour” and “Abyss of the Void” which all crossfade into eachother and can be considered one long story. These three songs together are one long epic journey going through every pace and type of classic power metal Kai Hansen has been about.“Time To Break Free” is a very happy song that sounds like a mixture of the average atmospheres on Heading For Tomorrow and Pink Bubbles Go Ape. It features none other than Michael Kiske on vocals! Even though the song is less heavy or less epic than the rest of the album it is very enjoyable and doesn’t feel out of place.“Faitytale” is briliant yet too short and “Rising Of The Damned” and “Afterlife” are decent and entertaining. I can live with “Farewell” because it is dedicated to Ingo Schwichtenberg (such a tragic story). But to be honest it is a generic and cheesy ballad which I often skip.Kai Hansen is back ladies and gentlemen!

Album:

For the ones who would have slept since 1988 [...], Gamma Ray was born due to the departure of Kai Hansen from Helloween. The band found their own sound in 1995 with the album "Land Of The Free". The line-up became stabilized in 1997 with the album "Somewhere Out In Space", including Dirk Schlachter [bass], Daniel Zimmermann [drums], Henjo Richter [guitars] and of course Kai Hansen [guitars, vocals]. Since then, Gamma Ray never really improved their style for the happiness of their numerous fans.In that context, 1999's "Powerplant" was the expected sequel of "Somewhere Out In Space" and the first statement about the album is that the concept of "I'm in space and I'm playing Power Metal!!!!" is still there. Well just look at some titles ['Anywhere In The Galaxy', 'Heavy Metal Universe']. No, seriously, my main point is that "Powerplant" is incredibly mature in both songwriting and performance. With hits such as the splendid 'Anywhere In The Galaxy', the powerful 'Razorblade Sigh', the epic 'Gardens Of The Sinner' and the terrific 'Armageddon', these guys surely released one of the major albums of their long career. You can add the cover 'It's A Sin' [turned into a Metal anthem... How cool!] to that already attracting song list. Plus if you get the digipack "Ultimate Collection", you will be pleased to find three very unusual bonus tracks. 'A While In Dreamland' features Kai Hansen singing over a fine piano melody while 'Long Live Rock'n Roll' is an interesting cover [originally by Black Sabbath]. 'Rich And Famous' has a powerful chorus and it could have been included in the original version of the record, as it's way better than track 6 - 'Short As Hell' - for example... [the only track that I don't like at all] Well, "Powerplant" is definitely one of the most famous Gamma Ray's efforts to date. Jewels of Power Metal such as 'Anywhere In The Galaxy' and 'Armageddon' do not allow you to ignore this album. So, if huge choruses and guitar solos are your passion, you ought to get this album as soon as possible.

This was the first line-up of Gamma Ray, bearing a sound understandably close to that of Helloween of that period.

Album:

Gamma Ray released their latest EP, Master of Confusion on March 15, 2013. While hearing little to no buzz about this EP, I was unsure of what to expect after the three years of relative silence, outside of the Skeletons and Majesties live CD and DVD release recorded in Switzerland. Hearing that release proved that the band still had it in them, even after the near 25 years of bouncing between the road and the studio. Master of Confusion however, is a couple new tracks, some cover songs, and additional live recordings of some of their classic tunes recorded in Bochum, Germany.Original track Empire of the Undead begins with a rough scream and some drum and guitar collaboration that is sure to knock you off your feet. Michael Ehre on drums is a relatively new member to the band, and with this track being my first impression of his work, I am quite excited to hear more from him. Straight of out a lost 80's thrash record, the song is in your face, fast paced, and an all around suprisingly heavy track for what classic GR fans would expect. Hansen's vocals are as sharp and classic as ever, never hesitant, never faltering. The guitar work from the band's trio of guitarists, Hansen, Dirk Schlacter, and Henjo Richter, is quick and dense, with great lead licks harmonized within.Master of Confusion, a sharp contrast to the first track, as it demonstrates a definite tempo cut, with traditional power metal drums and bass lines. The vocal work is lower pitched, with few exemptions in the chorus. The song's message is a definite stadium like anthem, an ode to Gamma Ray if you will, as they claim to be the masters of their craft, which I doubt anyone would deny. The EP also features two cover songs, Death or Glory (Holocaust) and Lost Angels (Sweet) which are two very severely contrastive songs. This isn't the first time Gamma Ray has covered Holocaust, as their cover of Heavy Metal Mania is found on Land of the Free. Death or Glory is one of those dark and angry, short-sweet-to the point kind of metal tunes, as Holocaust was well known for, and is perfectly executed by Gamma Ray. Sweet however, is a more lighthearted pop-rock band, however they were still a very influential band of the 1970's. This song has a more traditional power metal vibe when covered by GR, but still sounds very close to the original. The live tracks on the EP were recorded in Germany (because Germany gets everything of course) and as what is typically expected with GR, they are as strong and sharp as ever. The balance in the mixing is clear, and had I not been told these were live, I would have assumed they were some long lost rough studio mix, because they are so perfect. Michael Kiske is featured on track 9, Time to Break Free, which plays back to the fact that Germany gets to see everything, as if Wacken wasn't enough (I'm not a bitter American at all). All of the live tracks are beautiful, perfectly executed, and a great tease into the GR live experience for those of you that missed the Skeletons and Majesties live release. This EP is a good look into a possible new album from the power metal kings. The new material is exciting, and truly makes a Gamma Ray fan smile to see that they're not burning out and certainly not fading away.

Bio:

Kai Hansen formed Gamma Ray after leaving Helloween in 1989. Originally just a project involving Hansen, Ralf Scheepers and some guest musicians, Gamma Ray soon evolved into a full-time band.In 1994 Ralf Scheepers left Gamma Ray as a result of living too far away from the base camp, so Kai Hansen took over the singing for himself just like on the first Helloween album. It has also been suggested that Scheepers left hoping to join Judas Priest, who were looking to replace Rob Halford around that time, and when that didn't work out he formed his own band with Mat Sinner, Primal Fear.Dirk Schlächter, though originally a bass player, joined as a guitarist, then switched to bass seven years later.Following line-up instability in the band's early days, the "Somewhere Out in Space" line-up of Hansen, Schlächter, Richer and Zimmermann assembled in 1997 and stayed together for 15 years until Zimmermann left the band for a more settled lifestyle in 2012.In 2006 Henjo Richter was injured in a fall and replaced on tour by Kasperi Heikkinen of the Finnish Gamma Ray tribute band Guardians of Mankind, whose keyboard player Eero Kaukomies was already part of the Gamma Ray touring line-up. Eero was also drafted in as a temporary live member of Freedom Call around the same time, whose ex-keyboard player Nils Neumann had also been a live member of Gamma Ray.Henning Basse filled in as vocalist on January 17th and 18th of 2008 when Kai Hansen was suffering from flu. Kai still performed in his role as guitarist.

Album:

With the release of the 11th studio album "Empire Of The Undead", Gamma Ray finally reclaims the throne on the world stage of classic Power Metal. The loyalty of Gamma Ray and Kai Hansen worldwide is unique. Two EPs ("Skeletons And Majesties" and "Master Of Confusion") and a live CD/DVD ("Skeletons And Majesties LIVE") only made the demand for new material louder. Following a world tour with Helloween, the band has been working on the new album for more than a year with producer and friend Eike Freese (who recently mixed the live album "The NOW What?! Live Tapes" included in the recent # 1 album by Deep Purple). At the end of 2013, while on tour, Gamma Ray saw themselves confronted with the misfortune of having their Hamburg studio destroyed by a fire-stroke. However, the band responded to this tragic event by doing what they have always been best at: "Life is too good to stop and moan" claims frontman Kai Hansen and therefore quickly adds "No one can stop us". This message can most definitely be transferred to the new album as the title track of the record already proved Gamma Ray's sound is once again unstoppable and puts an irresistible heavy and fast approach to their classic sound.

Album:

Japan edition.Hamburg – rock city. The harbor city in the Northern parts of Germany is the home base for many rock and metal bands. One of them is Gamma Ray, founded by Helloween guitarist Kai Hansen. It feels like as it would have been yesterday that the glorious debut ’Heading for Tomorrow’ created excitement in the world of heavy metal. What started successful became a winning streak over time.30 years and eleven records later, Gamma Ray is still active and as powerful as they have been in the early days. Although time didn’t stand still it is the spirit and passion for heavy metal that survived and could be maintained over all these years and make Gamma Ray to a Champion League player in metal. The days of pandemic forced the band to adjust the planned activities for celebrating 30 years of Gamma Ray. Having a jubilee these days means that you can’t have a usual party but there are ways to celebrate. In this case it was a Gamma Ray concert, that was held at IIS Dome in Düsseldorf on August 27th, 2020 and streamed into the world. Under the flag of ’30 Years Live Anniversary’, Gamma Ray performed a set that covers all the steps from then to now. With ‘Avalon’ and ‘Master of Confusion’ two songs from the latest studio album ‘Empire of the Dead’ have been presented in the top half of the set before the bottom part took care about the earlier days. With ‘Lust For Life’ no less than Ralf Scheepers, the first Gamma Ray frontman, joined and enriched classics like ‘One With the World’ and the legendary ‘Heading for Tomorrow’ with his great voice. And if you wonder why you hear fans in-between songs, the answer is rather simple. Of course, due to the pandemic there wasn’t any audience in the room. Gamma Ray asked fans though to scream and shout at home while watching the streaming event and later sent in the files. These files became part of this release, help to create a live atmosphere and is a nice idea to connect fans and band for such an anniversary.’30 Years Live Anniversary’ is a great summary of what Gamma Ray achieved in three decades, an album that features classics of German heavy metal from a band that surely belongs to the spearhead of metal.

Based on an interview conducted with Kai Hansen, they provide an insight into the making of the album and the band's history over the first 10 years."The only thing I knew was that I wanted to keep making music and realise my vision of the songs I had," says Kai Hansen about founding GAMMA RAY after leaving Helloween in 1988 - a vision that paid off.For over 30 years and with a total of eleven studio albums, the Hamburg power metal band around band leader Kai Hansen has influenced and shaped the genre. The expressiveness of their music is also reflected in their energetic live shows, which was impressively recorded on their longplayer "30 Years Live Anniversary" (2021).With "Blast From The Past", GAMMA RAY return to their beginnings and review their first 10 years. The album by the German power metal icons is a musical cross-section of their studio albums released between 1990 and 1999.We said [to our fans]: 'Choose three songs from each album'," Kai Hansen recalls, and the result was "Blast From The Past", first released in 2000.For the reissue, all songs have been remastered by producer Eike Freese and extensive liner notes by British journalist Dave Everley, based on an interview he conducted with Kai Hansen, give an insight into the making of the album and the band's history over the first 10 years. On 21 April 2023, "Blast From The Past" - with the iconic album cover by Derek Riggs (Iron Maiden) - finally returns to record shops.
