Bio:

Helloween is a German power metal band founded in 1984 in Hamburg, Northern Germany. The band is a pioneering force in the power metal subgenres and their second and third studio albums, Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and Part II, are considered masterpieces of the genre. Twelve musicians have been a part of the band's line-up in its history, which has consisted of singer Andi Deris, guitarists Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner, bass guitarist Markus Grosskopf, and drummer Daniel Löble since 2005.Helloween was formed in 1984 by members of bands Iron Fist, Gentry, and Powerfool. Its first line-up consisted of Weikath, Grosskopf, singer and guitarist Kai Hansen and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. After the release of a self-titled EP and a first album in 1985, it expanded into a quintet when singer Michael Kiske joined, with Hansen only acting as guitarist. Under this line-up, they released the Keeper of the Seven Keys albums (1987 and 1988), which established Helloween as a notable heavy metal band and led to the creation of the power metal subgenre. However, Hansen left the band quickly after the release of Part II and was replaced by Roland Grapow. He then created the band Gamma Ray.Helloween's first two albums without Hansen, Pink Bubbles Go Ape (1991) and Chameleon (1993), were commercial and critical failures, which created tensions between band members and led to the firing of Schwichtenberg and the departure of Kiske. They were replaced by Uli Kusch and Andi Deris respectively. The albums released under this line-up, consisting of Master of the Rings (1994), The Time of the Oath (1996), Better Than Raw (1998) and The Dark Ride (2000), received a warm reception from both fans and critics, gradually establishing Helloween as a successful band again. However, tensions following the release of The Dark Ride led to the dismissals of both Grapow and Kusch, who then went on to found Masterplan together. Grapow was replaced by Gerstner, but the attempts to find a new drummer were chaotic and no band member was credited for drums on the album Rabbit Don't Come Easy (2003). The band finally found a stable drummer in the person of Löble in 2005. Under this new and current line-up, the longest in its history, the band has released four successful studio albums: Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy (2005), Gambling with the Devil (2007), 7 Sinners (2010), and Straight Out of Hell (2013), with all members except Löble contributing to songwriting.Since its creation, Helloween has released fourteen studio albums, three live albums, three EPs, and twenty-seven singles, and has sold more than five million records worldwide.

Album:

Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I is the second studio album by German power metal band Helloween, released in 1987. It marks the first appearance of vocalist Michael Kiske, and is considered the album that created the genre of European-style power metal. Kai Hansen stepped away from doing vocal duties as he had difficulties singing and playing the guitar at the same time during the previous tour. It was an album dominated by Hansen, due to an injury to co-guitarist Michael Weikath which prevented him from performing on much of the album. "Future World" was released as a single and a music video was made for "Halloween" but with 8 minutes omitted from the song. The band originally planned to release Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I and Part II as a double album, but their record label refused, insisting that the albums be released separately. Much later in 2010, both albums were released together with bonus tracks.

Album:

Pink Bubbles Go Ape is the fourth studio album by German power metal band Helloween, released in 1991.It marked the departure of guitarist Kai Hansen, with Roland Grapow replacing him. Musically it was written with a softer, less epic, and sometimes humorous approach, which would be later fully implemented in the band's following album Chameleon (1993).The album contains two singles, which are "Kids of the Century" and "Number One". "Kids of the Century" reached #56 in the United Kingdom. There were some tunes recorded for this album, which were either not featured on it ("Windmill") or have never been finished ("City Cries").On the other hand, the track "Heavy Metal Hamsters" (supposedly written about the band's former record company) was, according to Michael Weikath, never intended to be on the album, but rather on a B-side of a single. After the success of the Keepers albums by the german metlars Helloween, the group fell into some disarray with the departure of Kai Hansan who formed his own band Gamma Ray and the band was going through some problems with its previous record company Noise. In comes Roland Grapow who pens some of the finest tracks on this record. This record is NOT a sell out album, but it definitly shows signs of the band going soft. The album kicks off with a short acoustic interlude with Michael Kiske singing a little noodle saying pink bubbles have gone ape. The awkward look on my face disappeared as soon "Kids of the Century" blasts off with speed and a delightful chorous as this is one of the top tracks on this album. "Back on the Streets" does not let up either as it continues the assault with high speed and fast riff work by Michael Weikath and Grapow. "I'm Doin' Fine, Crazy Man" has some good guitar work also, but kind of falls flat in the chorous. This album is high on speed, but unfortunately it does not last.A couple songs on here just fall flat on their face. The first one is the cheesy, terribly written song "Number One." The high thumping bass along with the horrible lyrics makes me want to puke. Another one is "Mankind." This is obviously an attempt for an epic sounding song, but it is too long and just drags on with no interesting arrangements and it has a glaringly poppy chorous and melody. It is just plain boring. The other song that can be thrown away is the last song and a ballad calle "Your Turn." Any ballad by a heavy metal band that has Mickey Mouse in the lyrics is bad. Now, I don't have anything aganist Mickey Mouse, but he should not be referenced in a ballad by Helloween! One of things noticeable on this record is this album features many "happy" sounding riffs which is evident in "Goin' Home" as well as the ones i mentioned above. Helloween is known for this, but it has a huge presense on this record. It is not annoying, but it might be to some people who want more heaviness and "mean" sounding riffs, but it should not deter the sheer enjoyment one will get from this record.Something that must be mentioned is Michael Kiske's performance on this album. He is flawless bellowing out the vocals with great range and presense in these songs. Just take a listen to "Someone's Crying" and you will know what I mean. Kiske brings another great performance on this Helloween album. You do not have to approach this album with caution. The speed and the great guitar work by Weikath and the newly recruited Roland Grapow make this a worthwhile album. Go out and give this album a try. You should not be disappointed. Buy it. Love it. Like it. Own it.

Album:

First remastered re-release of the third full-length album by legendary German Power/Speed Metal band. The album capitalized on the success of “Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I” and picks up where it left off. The magic that made "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part I", a triumph of epic proportions, was still very much in the air come time for "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part II". What was originally intended to be a double album had to be split in two at the record company’s request, so "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part II" was recorded later and came out in 1988. Gladly, "Part II" a much longer album than "Part I", clocking in with an extra fifteen minutes or so of music."Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part II" was a very worthy follow up to the first album of the pair as well as one of the best albums of 1988. Building upon the Power Metal blueprint (still known as Speed Metal by most in 1988), "Keeper II" offered listeners classy Metal with a strong sense of humor, a great selling point in a genre that has long taken itself far too seriously for its existence. The band still brandished their polished speed sound on songs like "Eagle Fly Free" as well as anthemic tunes like "I Want Out", "Save Us" or the powerful "We Got the Right". And naturally the band finished out the saga with the thirteen minute-plus epic "Keeper of the Seven Keys", a multilayered and far ranging song that ended the two album theme. Kiske's singing at times was a bit shrill but most of the time he nailed his melodies with utmost precision. Meanwhile, the band behind him played at peak form throughout, as though nothing could ever stop them in their path.Nearly every song on this album is close to excellent or in fact, exquisite. It would seem that a huge number of bands have since tried to copy the formula of the "Keeper" albums and even Helloween themselves have never quite lived up to them (though it can be argued they topped themselves in a different light altogether on 1993's excellent "Chameleon"). Regardless of where history would take the band, "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part II" is a phenomenal album that was altogether fun, flawlessly played and well written!!Success bloomed all over Europe, Asia and even the United States. The album went Gold in Germany and reached #108 in the US.

Album:

Chameleon is the fifth studio album by German power metal band Helloween, released in 1993.It is their most musically adventurous release, but also their least commercially successful, and last studio album to feature singer Michael Kiske and original drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg. Helloween's 1993 release Chameleon remains to this day one of the most controversial album's in the band's back catalog, alongside 1991's Pink Bubbles Go Ape. Instead of following the speedy power metal sounds of the Keeper of the Seven Keys releases, the band chose to dive into more straightforward as well as proggy territory by injecting a healthy dose of pop, progressive, and orchestral styles into their music. This upset many of the fans and critics, who ultimately ignored the albums for the most part. Eventually singer Michael Kiske left the band after Chameleon, and with the addition of Andy Deris, Helloween returned once again to heavier power metal territory. That's not to say that Chameleon doesn't contain some strong material, which it certainly does. "First Time" is your typical Helloween metal thumper with speedy double bass drums, soaring vocals, and plenty of dual lead guitar work. The first sign that something's afoot comes on "When the Sinner", a catchy rocker with a great hook but featuring a horn section. Horn section, on a Helloween album? Believe it. While I personally don't mind it at all, back in 1993 the reaction was not overly positive. Horns again rear their head on the glossy rocker "Crazy Cat", and Kiske shows his tender side on the melodic ballad "I Don't Wanna Cry No More". The grinding rocker "Giants" is one of the heavier pieces on the album, complete with crunchy guitar riffs and nimble bass lines from Marcus Grosskopf. The use of symphonic keyboards as well as the multitude of guitar parts from Michael Weikath and Roland Grapow add a real progressive rock flair to this dramatic piece. "Windmill" is a acoustic based pop song that lets Kiske shine, but really doesn't belong on a Helloween album, and the band goes for a 70's hard rock vibe on the 8-minute "Revolution Now", a groove laden blues-boogie number that will remind the listener of bands like Mountain, Humble Pie, UFO, and Rainbow, with a slight touch of early Queensryche for good measure. This one has one of the best guitar riffs on the album, and a real heavy feel to it. "In the Night" is another acoustic pop number, a nice song but out of place. Horns and keyboards permeate the dramatic mini-epic "Music", another prog-rocker on the album that really works, and "Step Out of Hell" is a real catchy commercial metal piece with a great vocal from Kiske and killer guitar work. The band goes for another metallic and progressive epic on the 9+ minute "I Believe", complete with symphonic and atmospheric keyboards and plenty of roaring guitar solos, and finishes the album off with the lush acoustic track "Longing", perhaps the best pick of all the album's mellower pieces with it's graceful vocal, tender guitars, and orchestral keyboards. The second disc contains b-sides that didn't make it to the final album, and there's a bunch of them. Most have a similar feel to the regular songs from Chameleon, and I'm wondering if the band wouldn't have been better off putting out a double album initially. Of these songs, the highlights are the scorching instrumental "Oriental Journey", featuring amazing guitar battles between Weikath and Grapow, the bump and grind metal of "Cut in the Middle", the mix of Sweet and KISS flavored rock of "Get Me Out of Here", and the rambling Hendrix inspired instrumental "Red Socks and the Smell of the Trees". Overall, Chameleon comes across as more adventurous and ultimately more fullfilling than Pink Bubbles Go Ape, with its mix of heavy metal, prog, and pop styles. It may not be a traditional Helloween album by any means, but give them credit for trying something different. This expanded edition contains a great sounding remaster job, full lyrics, interview with Michael Weikath, and plenty of photos.

And that's what came out of it [...] I call it my natural born album. Album:

Straight Out of Hell is the fourteenth studio album by German power metal band Helloween. It was released on 18 January 2013 and produced by Charlie Bauerfeind.Andi Deris confirmed that Straight Out of Hell was intentionally made to be a "happy" Helloween album. This was, according to Deris, partly in response to the band's darker material during the previous 10 years, and partly out of the band's interest in releasing a positive album in light of the failure of the 2012 Doomsday Prediction.War and peace are the themes of the first two songs. Opening track, "Nabatea", refers to the ancient Nabatean Kingdom, which exists in modern Jordan. Andi Deris explained that Nabatea is "a nation which...was probably the only country which never brought war to other countries".A music video was shot for an edited version of "Nabataea".By contrast, the acceptance of conflict by the modern world consumes the second track, "World of War", which explores how contemporary humanity takes war as inevitable and seemingly cares little about the casualties, according to Deris.Faith is addressed in "Far From the Stars", with bassist Markus Grosskopf explaining that the strength of one's belief, whether associated with a religion or not, is essential for survival.[10] A different tack is taken on the last track, "Church Breaks Down", which highlights the Church's actions throughout the centuries such as its refusal to adapt to scientific developments such as the theory of evolution).Several songs deal with the follies and occasionally strange beliefs of humanity. "Burning Sun" is more light-hearted, introducing a protagonist who, according to Weikath, dreams of steering a spaceship into the Sun.A version of the track featuring a Hammond organ (performed by Helloween session keyboardist Matthias Ulmer) was dedicated to the late Deep Purple organist Jon Lord and is included as a bonus track on the limited and Japanese editions of the album. On the other hand, "Waiting for the Thunder" is a piano-driven song about an unrepentant man, after doing wrong, simply awaits the punishment rather than trying to make amends.Deris conceded that, "I know sometimes I'm that guy".In addition to the dedication of the Hammond organ version of "Burning Sun" to Jon Lord, Helloween dedicated "Wanna Be God" to the late Freddie Mercury of Queen due to its affinity to the Queen's stadium rock track, "We Will Rock You".Previously on December 12, 2012, Metal Shock Finland's Chief Editor, Mohsen Fayyazi, compared the drums of this track with a traditional Brazilian folk rhythm and also he wrote "It seems they wanted to wear QUEEN‘s shoes, as this track sounds like “We Will Rock You” by QUEEN to me".The title track toys with heavy metal clichés while "Years" fixates upon life and death, and "Make Fire Catch the Fly" discusses the fear of rejection that may cause a person to never profess love for another

German power metallers HELLOWEEN will release their 15th studio album, "My God-Given Right", on May 29 via Nuclear Blast. The CD was recorded between October 2014 and February 2015 at the band's MiSueno Studio on the isle of Tenerife with producer Charlie Bauerfeind (GOTTHARD, HAMMERFALL).On April 17, HELLOWEEN will release the first single from "My God-Given Right", the speed metal hymn "Battle's Won". In addition to the digital download, there will be a limited-edition two-track vinyl single, also featuring the album cut "Lost In America".The "My God-Given Right" artwork was once again created by graphic guru Martin Häusler (BON JOVI, QUEEN, GOTTHARD) and will also be available as a 3D lenticular print.Says Häusler: "We tried to build a world of ideas, keeping the 'classic HELLOWEEN' elements, like the pumpkins on the one hand and a complete new look on the other, just like we did it the years before, working on a HELLOWEEN artwork."A first inspiration came from the album title, 'My God-Given Right', and some of the song titles, like 'Swing Of A Fallen World', 'Lost In America', 'Battle's Won', etc."During my research, I stumbled upon the blockbuster 'Day After Tomorrow' and the idea of just leaving the world to the 'pumpkins' was born."The most challenging part of this artwork was to have both the limited edition and the 11-inch earbook provided with a 3D lenticular cover (a full 3D cover, visible without 3D glasses). That's the reason the entire artwork was done 'in one piece,' using a 3D program…We did not want one of those 'cheap' lenticular covers, done by converting a 2D version, but the best possible real 3D result. So don’t get any other versions — this will be a true collector's item!"Adds HELLOWEEN frontman Andi Deris: "I never know how, but somehow we did it once again… The album really rocks and kicks some major asses!!! We had the best folks with us to make this possible: producer Charlie Bauerfeind and Martin Häusler, who made a massive 3D artwork this time WITHOUT stressing the whole color range."States HELLOWEEN guitarist Michael Weikath: "This proves what a bit of snow not only is able to but really causes! I personally hate snow and the cover shows that too much of everything is never good. Just like Andi Deris, I'm very happy about the new album."

Album:

It was THE SENSATION of the year 2016. During the Hellbook production to celebrate HELLOWEEN’s 30th anniversary, the contributors came to realise that the chemistry in the band had always been unique – and that what belongs together needs to be together again. However, the birth of “Pumpkins United” wasn’t just an original line-up reunion, but the real deal. The ultimate cast consisting of all seven metal heroes: Deris, Kiske, Weikath, Hansen, Grosskopf, Gerstner, and Löble. What followed, was a cry of joy from North Germany’s river Elbe to Rio’s Sugar Loaf Mountain, and the PUMPKINS UNITED WORLD TOUR with 69 shows in front of more than one million people in 32 countries acoss three continents in Fall 2017.The band’s headline slots at Wacken, Rock Fest Barcelona and Masters of Rock, as well as their shows with Iron Maiden at the Sweden Rock Festival and Firenze Rocks, the revival was received enthusiastically, stages were set on fire, and tears were shed. After dates in the US and additional shows in Latin America, this tour for the ages ended in December 2018 with a highly emotional finale in Hamburg, where it all began in 1984. – Unforgettable metal nights that we’d love to experience again and again. This amazing journey was one of those ‘magic moments’ words can’t describe – it simply was what we all love most: meet great people, go back in time with our memories, and celebrate the ultimate Helloween party together.” Andi Deris, 2019.From October 4, 2019, that’s finally possible: With the release of “UNITED ALIVE & UNITED ALIVE IN MADRID” we can transport ourselves to that tour at any time, and dive into every detail with hellish tracking shots, breathless close-ups, and intimate interviews. The artwork was created by Martin Hausler once again and offers plenty of unreleased live images.it wasn’t easy to condense this unbelievable tour adequately and capture how it felt for us – that’s why we had the idea to film the biggest festival gig, the most massive arena show, and the hottest club date.” Michi Kiske, 2019.The DVD/BLU-RAY nails the tour with recordings from Wacken in front of 75,000 metal heads and 14,000 fans in the Madrid arena – and as a bonus, the show in the Espaço das Américas, gathering 8,000 in São Paulo. Altogether it offers over three hours of live material in stereo and premium 5.1 surround sound, plus backstage material, tons of surprises, and a very personal band interview about the past, present, and future. The LIVE-CD/VINYL presents a whopping 2 hours 20 of pure audio material from the concert in Madrid plus four bonus tracks from the shows in Prague, São Paulo, Wacken, and Santiago de Chile.Unfortunately, Dave Mustaine had to cancel the MEGADETH tour due to his medical condition. Together with metal fans all over the world, the PUMPKINS wish him a speedy recovery and will be filling in for the band’s Brazil dates last-minute, causing the scheduled studio dates to be postponed. Despite the occasion, HELLOWEEN are very happy to announce new shows at ROCKFEST, ROADFEST and ROCK LIVE, and to be able to celebrate the release day of “UNITED ALIVE & UNITED ALIVE IN MADRID” on October 4 live with the Brazilian fans and their friends IRON MAIDEN, SCORPIONS and SEPULTURA at what is probably the biggest and most legendary festival worldwide: ROCK IN RIO!

Album:

German killer metallers HELLOWEEN will be reissuing their compilation “Treasure Chest“, a 3 disc anthology featuring the band’s best tracks from the band’s self-titled debut EP (1985) to ‘The Dark Ride’ (2000). Some of these songs have been remixed or feature alternate vocal takes / instrumental parts. The box set includes a bonus disc titled “Buried Treasure” with the band’s hard to find previous B-sides / Japan edition bonuses.“Treasure Chest” is a great starting point for any new or casual fans but also die hards. The ’80s tracks are benefited by the remastering job, and the remixed tracks really offer something different from the originals. This compilation has all Helloween’s best songs. Some of these found on the first disc include the Keepers era classics like “I Want Out”, “Future World”, “Dr.Stein”, “A Little Time” and “Eagle Fly Free”. Found on “Treasure Chest” are the 13 minute epics “Halloween” and a remixed version of “Keeper Of The Seven Keys”. There are also the very early songs like “Starlight” and “Metal Invaders”. As for second disc is concerned, more great songs are found like “Mr. Ego (Take Me Down)”, “Kings Will Be Kings”, “Mirror, Mirror”, ”Perfect Gentleman” and “Immortal”.Helloween has left its mark on the power melodic metal scene like few other bands in this world and a look at the first two discs confirms that the German band has released influential tunes in all phases of its career. Early epics like ”Ride the Sky” or the version of ”Starlight” with an extraordinary Michael Kiske on vocals have aged particularly well and aren’t only remembered fondly by power metal fans nowadays but also by the detractors of said genre. The songs from Walls of Jericho have kept their pure, liberating and energetic spirit that make them sound fresh, majestic and timeless. The era that is commonly known as the band’s golden years around the first Keeper of the Seven Keys record is richly represented on this compilation. The dynamic yet gloomy epic ”Halloween” is still played on said day all around the world nowadays while ”Keeper of the Seven Keys” proved that lyrics with religious background and uplifting melodic heavy metal could harmonize particularly well.Helloween even included tracks from its more controversial releases in the early Nineties that nearly saw the group fall apart. The uplifting and melodic ”The Chance” is an overlooked gem with great bass guitar play and technically stunning drum techniques. Even the much criticized ballad ”Windmill” with atmospheric sound samples, piano sounds and acoustic guitars stands out for its courage to experiment and broaden the band’s horizons. The new, late ’90s era of the band is also represented fairly well with songs like the sinister hard rocking ”The Time of the Oath” and the powerful ”Mr. Torture” that combines fierce riffs and raw vocals with unforgettable melodies and a chorus that is among the best the band has ever written. The third disc featuring rarities is particularly interesting. Even though they are included on the remastered versions of the band’s records, it’s a great idea to have a solid selection of them on such a separate disc on this unique output. It offers the occasion to discover some forgotten gems even though most tracks aren’t as strong as the band’s regular cuts. The blues-infused ”Ain’t Got Nothin’ Better” shows a completely unknown side of the band while ”Can’t Fight Your Desire” combines the band’s atmospheric and energetic sides so perfectly that one has to wonder why this particular song didn’t make the cut for a regular album. There is also a very good cover of the Judas Priest classic “The Hellion / Electric Eye”.This compilation represents the best phases this band went through quite accurately, features famous hit singles as well as overlooked gems and even offers a whole disc of rarities.Instead of purchasing specific records of the band that had some ups and downs, you are guaranteed to discover much more killers than fillers on this excellent package.
