Bio:

Wizard is a German power metal band, formed in 1989 by the drummer Sören "Snoppi" van Heek. The band was often called "Germany's answer to Manowar".Most of the band's lyrics are about battles, metal, war and steel. There are some exceptions, for example "Odin", which is a concept album about Norse mythology, "Goochan" which is a fantasy story about a witch (written by Volker Leson and author William B. Nuke), "Thor" which is also about Norse mythology and "... Of Wariwulfs and Bluotvarwes" which is about vampires and werewolves (written by Wizard and Andre Wiesler, German author).Wizard played at Wacken Open Air 2002,Bang Your Head!!! 2002, Keep It True 2004, Dokk'em Open Air 2006, Magic Circle Festival 2009 and is in the 2012 line-up of Hammerfest IV.In 2003 longtime guitarist Michael Maass quit the band because of health problems. Dano Boland became a new guitarist for the band in early 2004. In 2006 the band left the label Limb Music after three albums and joined the somewhat larger label Massacre Records, with a new album in mind to be released on January 27, 2007, titled Goochan. On May 18, 2007, Michael Maass returned to the band after a four-year break.

Album:

Power metallers Wizard will reissue four studio albums in 2015, via Limb Music. You can get your hands on new editions of Bound By Metal (1999), Head Of The Deceiver (2001), Odin (2003) and Magic Circle (2005), which have been remastered by Markus Teske (Vanden Plas, Mob Rules, Symphony X), and will include bonus tracks. Moreover, the Odin and Magic Circle reissues will also include bonus video clips. The image represented so clearly by the cover artwork of the Wizard output, “Bound By Metal” is transformed into ambitious music in the tracks of the album. The power of the album bursts through the seams, as the title of this tremendous album promises. Every one of the twelve original songs shine with great instrument techniques and memorable vocal lines. The German Epic Power Metal band WIZARD have been active since 1989 – so it stands to reason that as people discover their latest album material, the desire to enjoy the back catalog becomes stronger. Smaller labels like B.O. Records that released “Bound by Metal” in its original form are now deceased, which means that this re-issue from Limb Music is a welcome sight. Originally hitting the streets as their third studio album in 1999, I remember the struggle for anything in the Traditional, Power, and Epic genres of metal to gain respect and admiration beyond the die-hards as Extreme forms gained momentum – so 16 years later is as good a time as any to give this record another chance.Songs like the speedier “Hammer, Bow, Axe and Sword” plus “A Nice Day to Die” intertwine a lot of Teutonic trademarks in terms of catchy, galloping tempos and a solid wall of power riffing along with the majestic, multi-level piercing screams and singing prowess of vocalist Sven D’Anna. Many would probably be quick to say that there are a lot of MANOWAR qualities to their music- and I’d agree- but the musicianship and construction also adds some elements of GAMMA RAY and IRON SAVIOR to the mix. And you can’t go wrong with lyrical topics about warriors, gladiators, battlefields, and of course the praise of our almighty Metal! The material varies as well throughout the record – the almost 7 minute “Unicorn” has a nice back and forth epic anthem flow in terms of the drumming and occasional lead break additions from Michael Maass that recall “Flash of the Blade” / IRON MAIDEN while “Believe in Metal” has the requisite chanting chorus backgrounds for promoting sing-a-longs. The 3 bonus tracks include earlier material like “In the Sign of the Wizard” that has more of a demo quality production-wise compared to the album, but I find intriguing to see the development of WIZARD through the years. If you are unfamiliar with the band, “Bound by Metal” is a mighty place to start- and still one of their best albums in their wide catalog.

Album:

Solid German power/heavy metallers Wizard return with their eleventh album in a career stretching over more than 25 years. Fallen Kings is what they call this new album that is themed similarly to their earlier works. And that is the thing “true heavy metal” as the label states usually means boring from a creative standpoint and it is hardly a band that opens up any new avenues in the power metal genre, have you heard them before you will know what to expect now.Fallen Kings is powerful heavy/power metal with warrior/fantasy themes, strong and raw sound and a rough edged production – almost more akin towards the American power metal than the European. It is a long album with a playing time nearing the hour; the songs have the usual variation for both Wizard and the common power metal. It is safe to say that this is an album that isn’t about to surprise anyone; it delivers more or less exactly what was expected beforehand. It is a solid effort, plain and simple.I would however state that this album could have been a little bit shorter, they could have skipped a few tracks to make the album feel a bit more dynamic and dramatic. It feels a bit on the long side to me. Fans of Wizard and fans of classic power metal should like this album, it has some strong songs to offer the listener and those into this kind of music will find it comforting and familiar. I think it is rather enjoyable, and good – but perhaps solid is a better word for it, solid and familiar. So it may be creatively a bit tired, a bit devoid of imagination but it is good and Wizard proves that they are a solid and strong band. Their fans will like this, fans of power metal will like this – but I don’t think it is an album with that much lasting power and I fear it will be forgotten quite soon. Nevertheless, it is an album that you should have a closer look at if you like what Wizard have done before or if you like this kind of music.

Album:

German metal institution Wizard is back with its 12th studio album and it offers kick-ass heavy metal galore! Get ready for pounding drums, catchy hooks and huge sing along choruses that will make you want to bang your head like there's no tomorrow! Raise your fists to the air and show us that there's only metal in your head!Old traditional bands are booming at the moment. Lately I have reviewed a few albums by such bands. Here comes the next one. Wizard come from Bocholt (North Rhine-Westphalia). Wizard was founded in 1989 and since then they have been releasing new albums regularly. With “Metal In My Head” the dozen is now full. From the original line-up, singer Sven D’Anna and drummer Sören van Heek aka Snoppi Denn are on board without any break. Third founding member, guitarist Michael Maass had left the band for four years in between. The album was written and recorded during the ongoing pandemic with “lots of support from Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7”. Due to the band not being able to perform live, WIZARD put all their energy into the new album, and you can clearly hear that! You can read that in the press release. And of course, it made me curious.“I Bring Light Into The Dark” starts with keyboard sounds and spoken words. But already a little later the musicians show that the album is not a Symphonic but a Power/Heavy Metal album. The drums sound raw. It is noticeable that the drum recordings were not artificially reworked, pure drums. The interplay between the two guitarists is also clearly audible. Twin guitars, comparable to Judas Priest, Saxon or Iron Maiden. Of course, this continues with “Metal Feast”, but a little faster. A metallic high-speed feast. “Metal In My Head” is a clear lyrical statement to what is probably the most beautiful pastime in the world, heavy metal. Singer Sven D’Anna starts off with high-pitched screams in the best Halford style. Also, on “Victory” you can enjoy beautiful twin guitar passages. “30 Years Of Metal” is a great metal anthem and at the same time a reminiscence of the band’s history. After all, Wizzard’s first release was the demo “Legion Of Doom” thirty years ago. And the official band website on the internet was named after it. The beautiful power ballad “Whirlewolf” was not written by Wizard. The song was composed by Gustavo Acosta (Feanor), who also plays the piano here. A good friend and comrade, Martjo “Whirlewolf” Brongers (guitar, a.o. Steel Schock, Vortex), who died unexpectedly in 2019, is remembered here. The lyrics to “Years Of War” also revisit the band’s history. The album ends with the banger “Firesword” and the hymn “Destiny”.More than thirty years in the metal business and not a bit quieter. That’s how Wizard’s twelfth studio album can be described. This is heavy metal in its purest form. An album that no heavy metal fan should be without in their CD collection. Here’s to the next thirty years, one might say.
