HammerFall is a Swedish heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak. After a year-and-a-half-long hiatus, they will return with a new album in August 2014.HammerFall was formed when guitarist Oscar Dronjak quit Ceremonial Oath and invited Jesper Strömblad (from In Flames) to join him as a drummer in a new musical project he had been contemplating for some time. Dronjak had already composed the song "Steel Meets Steel," which was later included on HammerFall's debut album. Dronjak and Strömblad were later joined by guitarist Niklas Sundin, bassist Johan Larsson, and vocalist Mikael Stanne. When Niklas Sundin and Johan Larsson left HammerFall the following year, Glenn Ljungström (then guitarist of In Flames) and Fredrik Larsson (bassist of the former Swedish death metal band Dispatched), replaced them. All five members played in other bands at the time. Dronjak and Larsson played in Crystal Age; Strömblad and Ljungström played in In Flames and Stanne sang for Dark Tranquillity. Both of these bands influenced Swedish melodic death metal. HammerFall was relegated to being a side project of them all for several years. Their concerts were limited mostly to a local music contest named Rockslaget. The band had few songs of their own and played mostly covers from bands such as Pretty Maids, Judas Priest and Alice Cooper. In 1996, HammerFall reached the semi-finals of Rockslaget. When Mikael Stanne could not perform with the band in the semi-finals, they found Joacim Cans, who agreed to play with them for the night. The concert was a success although the judges disqualified HammerFall for the finals. By the end of that day, Joacim had already been made an official member of the band.

Album:

Once upon a time, there was a group of warriors who called themselves the ‘Templars of Steel’; with a stone cold heart and a renegade attitude, they went on a crusade to resurrect the heydays of the metal age by heeding the call of the brave and kept the flame burning for a long time, giving hope to those who were aching for the golden age of heavy metal to return. These warriors were destined for glory, and they always would be.They were born to rule, and so they did, for more than a decade. Lighting the Templar flame high above the clouds, they faced many challenges, and when steel met steel these brave paladins conquered all with an unforgiving blade, riding the storm with the crimson thunder through the thresholds of time. Blood bound, they seemed unstoppable and reached the end of the rainbow with their hearts on fire, ready for anything. Rosén and Elmgren, two of the best and most noble warriors of them all, were injured in battle and decided to part ways with their brothers, leaving the alliance fragile. Larsson, one of the first Templars, returned to help their brothers and Norgren, proficient axeman and wizard of sound, stepped in for the charismatic Elmgren. But one day, it all seemed strange, like there was something missing; they kept going using any means necessary to do so, but something had infected them. Their guardian, Hector, was equally affected and had to step out of battle to recover. Battered and bruised, they paused the eternal search for the spirit of true heavy metal and retired themselves to meditate and heal. And then, one winter later, the Templars got together once again in the spirit of revolution, hoping for a powerful return to origins. A little rusted, they managed to perform better than their last battles, but this new endeavor was just a way for them to detoxify from all the bad omens that were haunting the crusade. This time, though, they will prove once again that the Templars of steel were ‘Built to Last’; their swords are sharper, their minds are clearer and their hammers are high. One of the most beloved and prominent bands of the new generation of metal is back with full force. Hammerfall will release their 10th full length album on November 4th – first one via Napalm Records –, completing their return to form started with ´(r)Evolution’ in 2014. Longtime buddies Joacim Cans and Oscar Dronjak lead the way once again to an album that will restore your hope in the band and put Hammerfall in a place where they never should have left. Starting strong with “Bring It!”, the band destroys any skepticism you might have in the first chords, with Grave Digger-esque guitar lines and a powerful and pumped chorus. The song lifts up the spirits and paves the way to other two great tracks: “Hammer High” and “The Sacred Vow”, previously released as a lyric video; “Hammer High” is an absolute anthem of epic proportions. The very beginning of the song makes you want to raise your fist and bang your head, singing along with the characteristic Hammerfall choir. This is one of those songs that you know are going to be perfect live, and will definitely become perennial. “The Sacred Vow” is a little bit like “Hector’s Hymn” in terms of sounding like a classic, but actually missing something else. It is a great and catchy song with some quotes of old Hammerfall tunes like “Steel Meets Steel” and “Heeding the Call” – which is a form of writing that I like very much – and has one of the simplest, yet most magnificent part of a song I’ve heard from these guys in years: ‘fear the sound of metal, the sweetest sound of all’. Perfect.“Dethrone and Defy” speeds up the album and reminisces some of the denser vibes of the band, maybe something between what we’ve seen in ‘Crimson Thunder’ and ‘Threshold’. Riff-driven, the track maintains the good quality of the album. The ballad “Twilight Princess” comes next, and it’s absolutely gorgeuous: starting with just an acoustic guitar and Joacim Cans’ voice, the sound builds itself into an emotional and magical journey to a sad story. Without exaggeration, this stands as tall as classic ballads by the band such as “Always Will Be”, “Remember Yesterday”. It’s obviously not as good as the transcendental “Glory to the Brave”, but you get the idea. “Stormbreaker” shows the traditional vein so beloved in Hammerfall’s sound, with a marvelous riff and a sped-up chorus. “Built to Last” is yet another of those ‘fists up high’ tunes with a cadenced construction; this song could be easily featured in ‘Crimson Thunder’. “The Star of Home” is a faster track with glimpses of power metal, being one of the happier songs of the album. Joacim delivers a great performance here, especially at the chorus, proving that almost 20 years of activity haven’t hurt his pipes at all. And then comes “New Breed”; A clear homage to the sound of Accept, illustrated by the guitar lines and atmosphere, especially, the song is an ode to every metal band out there. Please, please, hear this song as much as you can and absorb the message: young or old, classic or modern, the bands and the fans are all the same in the heavy metal community and all of us support the same ideas and culture. Closing the album is “Second to None”, the most epic song of the bunch. Is slowly builds from a ballad to the darker song featured in the album, relying heavily in keyboard arrangements and Joacim’s voice. As you can see, the Templars of steel rise from the darkness and slay their demons once and for all with ‘Built to Last’. Clearly a return to the classic sound, the band successfully gathered all the missing elements we loved so much from the first records and, allied to a refreshing sensation and the joy to play music by the band members, turned this into a very, very good heavy metal album, well worthy of the Hammerfall name. If you are used to reading my reviews, you know that I don’t just give away high ratings, so believe me, ‘Built to Last’ deserved every point here. So grab your swords and shields, join the Swedish Templars in yet another crusade to reach heavy metal supremacy and let the hammer fall.

The concert was a success although the judges disqualified HammerFall for the finals. By the end of that day, Joacim had already been made an official member of the band.

Album:

When HammerFall released their debut album Glory To The Brave in 1997, the five Swedes launched a true heavy metal revival overnight. While the mainstream was saturated with grunge and the metal scene was dominated by black and gothic acts, this traditional metal record was like a godsend and heralded a new era. Now, 20 years later, Nuclear Blast is set to release a fan must have: a 20 Year Anniversary Edition of the cult album - just in time for Christmas. An official trailer for the upcoming release can be found below. The pre-orders have already started. The gold and black vinyl, as well as the digital version of the album, will be released on December 1st - with the extensive fan box set (2CD-Digi/DVD+other fan articles, see below) dropping on December 15th (the box set release was postponed)."For us, the immense success was a real shock in the beginning," singer Joacim Cans recalls. Suddenly after the release of their debut album, HammerFall were considered to be the saviors of true metal. They received countless rave reviews from magazines, Wacken Open Air booked the band at prime time on the main stage, Kai Hansen invited the band personally to join as support on the Gamma Ray tour and the CD entered the German album charts at the amazing position of #38 - an unbelievable achievement during this time."Our advantage was that no one has expected us and our album. We only did what we wanted and felt compelled to do", continues Cans. The band’s passion was influenced by their heavy metal peers: German metal acts like Accept, Helloween and Stormwitch - but also by the underdogs, including Warlord or Picture. "I'm still very proud of this album, it has turned our lives upside down" the vocalist concludes. The re-release includes the completely remastered version of Glory To The Brave, a radio edit of the legendary title track as well as the great cover version of the Stormwitch classic "Ravenlord". The bonus CD will include live versions of "The Metal Age", "Steel Meets Steel", "Stone Cold", "Glory To The Brave", "Hammerfall" and "The Dragon Lies Bleeding", as well as a medley of numerous tracks off of their first class debut album, which was recorded live this year at a show in Berlin. In addition to this, the double CD will also include a bonus DVD containing the first chapters of their The First Crusade documentary, which was originally published on VHS. As well as four new, historically edited interview chapters, the DVD also includes a live recording of the band's Dynamo Open Air show at Eindhoven in 1998. The album will be available as a digipak box set, including a booklet containing detailed liner notes, photos from the private archives of the band as well as magazine articles, flyers, posters and much more. Fans can also purchase the audio part separately, which includes bonus tracks as a double-vinyl in various colors. There has been no other album that was quite as important for the development of heavy metal in the nineties and now, the milestone will be published in a comprehensive deluxe edition that leaves no fan's wishes unfulfilled!

Bio:

Album:

Swedish metallers HAMMERFALL will release the 20th-anniversary edition of their second album, "Legacy Of Kings", as a 2-CD/DVD box set on December 7 via Nuclear Blast.Says HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak: "The all-important second album. After the immediate success of 'Glory To The Brave', the pressure was on us to deliver. But we weren't worried; we had a vision of the perfect heavy metal band and were intent on following through on it."HammerFall continued their heavy metal crusade started with Glory To The Brave in order to save the heavy metal music and wipe away the plague which affected it in 90's. Posers were shocked because of the attention HammerFall got, and they started hating on them. But did they stop HammerFall? No fucking way. This studio album is a killer classic heavy/power metal machine made of songs which continue Gory To The Brave tradition, with fast and slower songs, with passionate ballads too. There are many excellent fast songs: Heeding The Call, Legacy Of Kings, Stronger Than All and Warriors Of Faith, with ground-shaking drum work, raw, classic and heavy riffs and some well-placed power chords, orgasmic melodic lead guitars, fast, tasty, unique and technical demanding guitar solos, soaring vocals, catchy refrains and well-written lyrics. Dreamland belongs to this group of fast songs, but it's not excellent like others. That is the only weak moment on this album. If the lyrics could have been more creative, specially refrain, then everything would be all right. So, it has memorable riffs, leads, guitar solo, it's really enjoyable very good song, but not excellent. On the other side, there are slower songs like Let The Hammer Fall, which has monster classic heavy riffs, creative killer drum rhythms, and that's easily one of the coolest sing-along songs from this album, along with Heeding The Call and At The End Of The Rainbow. Although Let The Hammer Fall is faster than At The End Of The Rainbow, it's not as fast as the songs I mentioned above. At The End Of The Rainbow is one of those songs which will stuck into your mind after the very first listen, but many others as well. All songs will actually stuck into listener's mind without leaving him 'til the day he dies, except Dreamland which is the weakest song from here. Really weird thing is that such an passionate, slow, piano-driven ballad like The Fallen One remained in shade for very long time. Maybe it's just me, but actually I have never paid enough attention to that song. It's a true jewel, just like Remember Yesterday, the other excellent ballad from this studio album. They covered Pretty Maid's song Back To Back, and made it much more bad-ass. They played it so well, and made it sound like their own, so I'm not surprised that some people think it's their own.The album artwork perfectly represents HammerFall's role in heavy metal music. Of course they were not the only band formed in 90's which actually played heavy metal music, but not many other bands did it the way HammerFall did. Some 80's bands started to bend, and tried to adjust the mallcore trends like groove, industrial, -core, nu etc. Lyrics are not about knights and dragons, but mostly about "fighting for heavy metal" (keeping it alive) and playing it they way it was, just like Black Sabbath, Manowar, King Diamond and other masters did. For example: Heeding The Call which says - we are the ones to resurrect heavy metal, Legacy Of Kings which says - we''ll keep it true, Let The Hammer Fall which is self-promotion song, At The End Of The Rainbow which represents the new found way to keep heavy metal alive, Stronger Than All which says - you can say whatever you want, we don't give a fuck etc. Some songs express their feelings like Remember Yesterday and The Fallen One. These songs show that you don't have to pretend to be harsh and "br00tal" with down-tuned guitars, growl-screams/shrieks, wannabe bad-ass lyrics etc.

Album:

Dominion is the eleventh studio album by power metal band HammerFall, released on 16 August 2019.The first single, (We Make) Sweden Rock, was released on 3 May.The single is a tribute to several bands and other songs influential to the genre of power metal, such as Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen. It is the second album to feature David Wallin on drums, and the first since his departure and subsequent rejoining in 2016."It will go down as a milestone in the career of HammerFall, of that we have absolutely not even a sliver of doubt." Brave words - but you better believe, because they're coming from the one and only gods of heavy metal! Mercilessly galloping opener "Never Forgive, Never Forget" keeps that promise: the Swedes are in fine form and have forged an unforgettable steel manifesto! "Dominion" is hungry for blood and ready for battle with 12 new tracks. The title track is pure headbanging frenzy with epic backing vocals, "Testify" shreds like mad and just to make one thing clear: "We make Sweden rock!" Well, certainly not just Sweden will rock, because all over the world fists will shoot in the air: victorious immortals!

Album:

Of the many multitudes of sub-genres within heavy music, power metal is perhaps one of the most deceptively difficult to get right. Inherently cheesy and overblown by its very nature, the act of balancing these elements within metal song-writing has been a task many bands over the years have sought to perfect, with classic pioneers like HELLOWEEN and BLIND GUARDIAN setting a template still carried on by more modern upstarts like LOVEBITES and BEAST IN BLACK. Though not one of the very first in the genre, Sweden’s HAMMERFALL have been nonetheless been plying their trade for some 23 years now, and their latest release sees the band casting an eye back over their long and illustrious career with Live! Against The World, a new live album recorded in February 2020 to a rabid crowd at MHP Arena in Ludwigsburg, Germany. For hardcore HAMMERFALL fans who will likely make up the majority of its listeners, the real joy to be found in Live! Against The World is surely the sheer amount of the band’s career which it covers. Whilst 2019’s Dominion obviously takes up a good quarter of the space on offer here with tracks like the stomping One Against The World and the brilliantly tongue-in-cheek ode to their homeland (We Make) Sweden Rock, there’s still room for at least one song from every single one of the eleven-strong canon of HAMMERFALL studio albums – from early 90’s cuts like The Dragon Lies Bleeding from much-loved debut Glory to the Brave, and the pseudo-eponymous Let The Hammer Fall from Legacy of Kings, right through to a selection culled from their rather excellent album run of Infected, (r)Evolution and Built to Last in the 2010s; with lesser-played surprises coming in the form of songs like Infected deep-cut Redemption and Keep The Flame Burning from the classic Renegade to name a couple, proving there really is something for fans of every era on offer here. The latter album even gets its own medley towards the middle of the record too, as the band celebrate 20 years of the record that arguably made them one of power-metal’s most formidable creative forces by cramming as many riffs and solos as humanly possible from the likes of Templars of Steel, Always Will Be, Living in Victory, Destined for Glory and A Legend Reborn into one sprawling near-seven-minute composition that eventually crescendos with the bombastic back-to-back choruses of The Champion and title-track Renegade – much to the audible and enthusiastic delight of the Ludwigsburg audience.Remarkably for such a comprehensive set, there aren’t really any dips to speak of either, with every song pummelling the speakers with exactly the level of bombast you’d hope for from a band of such heritage. From the opening strains of Never Forgive, Never Forget, it instantly becomes clear that even the band’s newest material stands up to their history. In fact, it’s when HAMMERFALL slow right down for one of that record’s ballads, where they impress maybe most of all, with Second to One – a slow-burn piano-led ballad that sees talismanic frontman Joacim Cans teaming up with Noora Louhimo of Finnish power-metallers BATTLE BEAST for a truly moving meeting of vocal talents carried along by truly sublime guitar work from band founder Oscar Dronjak and his counterpart of the last 12 years Pontus Norgren, that couldn’t sound any more uplifting if it tried. Power-metal often functions best of all when delivered with a sheer bombastic joy that cares not for seriousness, and that’s very much the case here.Whilst every member of the band put on a stellar performance throughout Live! Against The World’s runtime, it’s Cans who’s perhaps the star of the show here though – whether he’s belting out soaring vocal lines like nobody’s business or bantering with the assembled masses encouraging them to headbang until they “…wake up with SLAYER necks in the morning…” before Hector’s Hymm, the vocalist’s raw charisma is very much front and centre across the record, to great effect. And while much of what Cans does vocally across Live! Against The World is likely very familiar in terms of style to just about anyone with a passing knowledge of the genre, it really can’t be overstated just how much fun it is to listen to him really going for those ridiculous notes at times. As a document of how HAMMERFALL operate as a live unit in 2020, there really is a lot to love about Live! Against The World. Die-hard fans of both the band and the genre at large are certain to find great enjoyment in the excellently crafted and performed selection of anthems crammed into their show of course, whilst more casual listeners may even find themselves swept up in the sheer over the top-ness of it all – such is the level of grin-inducing fun that this band bring to the table.

Album:

21 years ago, the Swedish Heavy Metal powerhouse HAMMERFALL, travelled to Nashville to record their third album with legendary producer Michael Wagner, leaving the safe space that was Studio Fredman in Göteborg. Fredrik Nordström had recorded the two previous records, so naturally that was a huge change for the band. The Wagner experience and the “Renegade” album turned out great, as we all know today. For this anniversary edition, the band felt that they needed to close the circle and have Fredrik remix the Renegade album. The result is "Renegade 2.0" which will be released via Nuclear Blast Records on November 12th in many beautiful formats and with a brand new album artwork made by famous cover artist Andreas Marshall, which makes every HAMMERFALL fan heart beats faster, and the pre-order starts today!Remember Wacken Open Air 2001 when ten thousands of metal heads were roaring along the chorus for "Templars Of Steel"? No? Well, let us refresh your memory with this legendary live footage from just that show. A song like a cry for a heavy metal revolution that really caught on to the scene! To this day, „Templars Of Steel“ is a true highlight of every HAMMERFALL live show and is a track that couldn’t encapsulate what the band stands for like barely any other!Frontman Joacim Cans remembers: “Oscar and I went down to Gran Canaria to write and finalize some songs for the Renegade album. Somewhere in the constant ”haze” I still remember that Oscar played the riff to the song and it totally blew me away.Couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into the hymn-like masterpiece and try some vocal ideas in my temporary studio built in the bathroom. This song became the opening track on the upcoming tour and created one of the coolest show openings ever when the draw bridge slowly started to come down during the pulsating intro to the song.”

Bio:

Album:

The Swedish saviors of heavy metal HammerFall let the hammer strike again, radiating power on all artistic levels with their twelfth studio album, "Hammer Of Dawn"! When HammerFall released debut album "Glory To The Brave" in 1997, they not only brought a breath of fresh air into the metal scene, but also managed to trigger a gargantuan boom for traditional heavy metal. Up until today, HammerFall has released several massive albums bursting with distinctive strength that assuredly won't disappoint, just as can be expected of "Hammer Of Dawn".The album starts off with remarkable opener "Brotherhood", a hymn echoing the deep friendship of band leaders Joacim Cans and Oscar Dronjak, but also serving as a shout-out to their loyal Templars. Title track "Hammer Of Dawn" breaks through with mighty roaring choirs, tremoring, catchy riffs and a brilliant solo by Pontus Norgren that quakes the ground beneath. Both songs give a brief insight in the new studio album and exemplify that HammerFall continues its way to the top of the heavy metal olympus even after almost 30 years of band history. The other tracks on the album are one smasher after another, with songs like "Reveries", "No Son Of Odin" and "Venerate Me" - the latter featuring an appearance by none other than King Diamond - making sure it will go down as another milestone in the career of the Swedes. The new album was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström (Arch Enemy, In Flames, Opeth, Powerwolf and others), who also recorded the drums. The vocals for "Hammer Of Dawn" were produced by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat and more), while guitars were recorded and produced by Pontus Norgren, with co-producers Oscar Dronjak and Fredrik Nordström."Hammer Of Dawn" presents the Swedish heavy metal spearhead in its brightest shining armor and is a proud adherence to the influential tradition. The album's powerful production bristles with strength and gives its songs their hard-hitting extra punch!
