Bio:

Wardrum is a heavy / power metal band based in Greece, formed in the summer of 2010.They were formed in Thessaloniki, Greece, by drummer Stergios Kourou, along with guitarist Kosta Vreto and bass player Kostas Scandalis (all 3 of them members of progsters Horizon’s End). Wardrum were originally fronted by Uli Jon Roth’s Italian singer Piero Leporale, while front-man Yannis Papadopoulos joined them as lead vocalist in the early 2012. Their debut album “Spadework” was released by Steel Gallery Records on the 20th of April 2011 and the band was directly rated as one of the most promising bands in Greece. The Spadework Line-Up did a live performance only once, opening for Crimson Glory’s show in Thessaloniki on 22/10/2011. In February 2012 the band parted ways with Leporale and found a local singer, in order to be more flexible and work easier. Yannis Papadopoulos took over the band’s front-man position and they immediately recorded “Desolation” which was released on 25/04/2012. On October–December of the same year the band toured all over Greece to support the new album and managed to create a solid core of fans who have shown their support by voting the band in the Metal Hammer magazine’s annual polls as the fourth best Greek band.

Album:

OK! This came out of nowhere. It was the first album I listened to from this terrific power / heavy band and it absolutely blew me off. Where have these guys been hiding all this time? How often can someone listen to an album containing 14 songs without even one filler?Giannis Papadopoulos is, for sure, one of the best, if not the best, metal singers of his time. His powerful voice can reach the sky without losing a single note. He offers passionate renditions, expressing successfully the feeling of the lyrics, colours uniquely the songs and takes them to another level. I feel , with total sense of what I'm writing, is that he is Rob Halford of his generation. Then, there is guitarist Kosta Vreto. Enormous riffs and incredible leads, that make you want to do air-guitaring, even in your sleep. It is even more exciting that he plays without a pick. He uses only his fingers. At last, there is the skillful rhythm section of Kostas Scandalis (bass) and Stergios Kourou (drums). Especially Kourou, thanks to his unparalleled technique, offers marvelous drumming that serves the songs, without showing off, though he could have done so easily.Kourou is also responsible for most of the songwriting, along with Vreto. They follow a certain pattern in most songs, which is verse-(pre-chorus)-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus. Durations do not go over 5 minutes with the exception of the metal hymn "Lady Jane Grey". Catchy (and I mean this as an advantage) riffing and sing-along choruses are Wardrum's trademarks. Lyrics, written exclusively by Kourou, coming from his own personal experience I assume, refer, mostly, to relationships that have ended and how someone must fight to fulfill his / her dreams against all difficulties, despite the obstacles that stand in the way. Scandalis, apart from being a great bass player, has done excellent work in producing, mixing and mastering the album. He has managed to bring out all the advantages of his bandmates - and there are plenty of them. All the organs are heard loud and clear, as well as the wonderful voice of Papadopoulos. In conclusion , Wardrum created a heavy metal album that does not stop to surprise, even when you reach the last song, and leaves you with a great silly smile on your face. If I have to distinguish some songs, I would have to say "Lady Jane Grey", "After Forever" ,"Travel Far Away", "The Messenger", "Red Ruby Heart", "Broken" , "Vengeance" and "Rebirth", but still I feel I'm being unfair. This is a true masterpiece, a jewel for every music collection.

Album:

Here come the fourth albums released by various bands, which we often come to compare to each other measuring up the bar height, looking for weak links, making analyses of any kind as well as holding abstract theories. Here comes also Wardrum’s fourth album. As for it, first you have to find an efficient way to push the stop button, to pry yourself away from it, so that you can find some peace and just admit that this band is almighty for real. Yes, almighty and I’m writing it in its literal meaning in all conscience. You can see, dear reader, that the big bands are considered as such when they are able to compose songs standing the test of time, impressing upon eras and periods. It’s the band’s fourth album which is full of such songs.Wardum’s Metal looks straight into your eyes. It’s straight as an arrow, clear, well-built and full of inspiration. Its creators use a technique to reach a direct result that sticks to your mind. And that happens with each and every song. A technique that serves music and not a kind of music that serves a technique as a means to an end. Besides, we have to do with a pure Metal album. So, the challenge for it is to become known. When was it the last time you listened to a whole loud album? Just tell me.The Power Metal practices of the album point towards America. Those of you who have spend some more time listening to the band’s so-far material, you would have realized that from a stylistic point of view Wardrum can rely on some standard technical US Metal forms, but they totally sound Wardrum-like concerning both the composition model of each track and the final result. They won’t just make do with splicing some riffs. They will hide small lead guitar melodies in each and every point of the tracks; they will set the almost melodious drum phrases free to creep in specific rhythmic meters giving you chills. They will let their redemptive refrains to catch you off guard. And in the end, you won’t be sure about if you want to hum the solo or the vocal melodies, when and if you manage to push that stop button I mentioned before. The album steps on the gas. On the whole, it’s the most torrential work of the band. It consists of mid-tempo full melodic moments, their hidden ace in the hole. You can’t classify the material easily, but since there are fluctuations and shifts in all songs, there is a plethora of themes; generally speaking, listeners are always alert to what they will listen not only in the next track but also in the next minute of the truck. And this lasts after many listens, as something new always comes to the surface. There’s a wide variety. There’s an enigmatic riffing that characterizes them from the very first day of their formation —a “Helstar meets Lethal” situation, done in the Wardrum way, though. That’s right, the two composers, Kourou and Vrettos, have lavished us on plenty of steel full of a pessimistic optimism. Guess that the drummer writes both a big part of the material and all the lyrics making this band his intellectual property. Vrettos has already recorded some of his most amazing solos, while Papadopoulos sounds more mature than ever. Basically, we have to do with a world-class voice. Suck it up. He is also aware of it and in this particular album he manages his voice even more consciously. We should also mention that a second guitarist has been included in the studio, too. An honorable man, Mr J. Demian —whom you will meet to have been a long way having been a member of many considerable bands in Thessaloniki, Greece— bares his teeth at the album, so that Kourou and Skandalis are able to work on their rhythmic parts more easily. It’s really difficult for me to choose one among the best tracks. Which can I refer to? To “The Unrepentant”, which grabs you by collar from the very beginning of the album? To the “Let the Flames Grow” with its almighty refrain? To the groovy “Virtues of Humanity”, the overwhelming “Baptised in Fire”, the dynamite-like “Shades of Hope”, which has a progressive perspective, or to the epic title song “The Awakening”?We are definitely talking about the best album of their career so far and I expect that the meritocratic (laughs) god of Metal will give them the ticket to somewhere better with this album. They do have talent and they have worked hard. As listeners, we benefit from such an amazing album. You will listen to it and you will understand. Having mentioned the listen, prepare your loudspeakers because Chris Donaldson (Cryptosy) has done a terrific job in the album production, which was made in The Grid Studios in Canada. I mustn’t forget to mention the usual suspect, Piotr Szafraniec, who has edited the album cover and the layout, as well. Of course, Monk is a real presence in the cover of the fourth album, too.I have nothing more to say. We’ve got 12 tracks technically well-played but direct US steel. Albums of that kind keep us stuck to Metal even though they’re released once in a blue moon. To conclude with, I just have to mention that “Sometimes” is one of the best Metal tracks I’ve listened to the last 15 years. Just because.

Album:

There are many (possibly too many) bands out there who fall into the category of Power Metal with a progressive edge and it is into this crowded market that Greek act Wardrum have emerged. Now the problem with inhabiting such an over populated area, is that to truly stand out from the crowd you need one of two things (both would be even better actually). The first is to be pretty damn excellent, shining so brightly, that even the multitude of other bands ploughing the same furrow can't stop you from being noticed, whereas the second is to offer something new, different and individual. Wardrum whilst coming very close unfortunately don't quite manage to conjure up either. Now, I'll qualify that statement. Spadework a good album - excellent in places actually, however it also has a couple of issues. The first of which is the lyrics, which are sung in English and are the work of the band's excellent drummer Stergios Kourou. Unfortunately the fact that English is not Stergios's first language comes across all too apparently, with the results being more like emotions in the form of poetry, rather than lyrics. Now for someone of the skill of say for example Fish, that isn't a problem – the opposite in fact, but here the words sound clunky and uneven, although not obtrusively so. The second issue, which may just be a personal gripe, is the vocals and while Piero Leporale is actually a more than capable vocalist with a powerful and clear delivery, his voice lacks warmth, making it at times almost feel separated from the music itself. This is something which becomes all too obvious on Spadework's most heartfelt title track, where Leporale has only acoustic guitar, flute and strings for company, leaving him sounding isolated and almost unsympathetic to his surroundings.Ultimately these issues may be too much for some potential listeners to cope with and that in truth would be a terrible shame, as delve into the music itself and Wardrum are a mighty fine act indeed. The galloping guitar of "Soultrip" for example sets this four-piece out as a powerful band who can mix melody with power and intricacy without compromising any of the three. The guitar display from Kosta Vreto and bass work courtesy of Kostas Scandalis (who also produced the album) really is top notch, with not one single drop in standard, between the pair, especially on the heavier tracks. They may not be reinventing the Power Metal wheel, but the riff and tangential guitar solo on "Last Neverland" does suggest that Wardrum do have the potential to produce something on a more groundbreaking scale.Musically, Spadework is a well constructed album which is actually pretty hard to fault and I really would urge any follower of the Power/Progressive Metal genre to give Wardrum a fair hearing. I've found it quite hard to strike a balance in this review, as I really do have reservations about this album's lyrics and vocals, but absolutely none with the music whatsoever.Ultimately Wardrum are a band well worth keeping an eye on.

Album:

Over the past decade I have been evident to deep insertion of new Heavy / Power Metal bands from Greece. Though the Swedish scene has been accompanying the world scene with old school British stuff, the Greeks have been applying as Metalheads with breaking Euro and US Power Metal moments while trying to reinsert the glorious 80s back into recognition. As both an 80s and a US Power Metal fan, I had a few trepidations when it came to the brand new “Desolation”, and sophomore, release via Steel Gallery Records of the Thessaloniki based group of WARDRUM. With a new vocalist in their bullet belt under the name of Yannis Papadopoulos (CROSSWIND / UNTIL RAIN), this fierce group of four, with a lot of talent, turned out to have quite a good sagacity towards the old school style plus really fine extras.Right from the second track, “Sign Of Treason”, though the opening attack of “Unforgiving” wasn’t that bad at all, I felt strong energies rushing through my veins. Both the music and vocals seemed so intense and full of life. Following “Sign Of Treason”, and later tracks such as the humongous “Higher Sky”, the blasting straightforward mania barrage of “No Retreat”, not sure if religious but utterly convincing “F.A.I.T.H.”, harmonic “Common Ground” and the chorus magnificence of “Parental”, and trust me that I haven’t included all the examples because I have to leave something for you to decide as well, it was like renewing marriage vows. It was another of my wedding vows’ renewal with Heavy Metal. WARDRUM astounded me with their old QUEENSRYCHE, FATES WARNING and CRIMSON GLORY allusions that drove me crazy. Well it wasn’t a hundred percent of an even flight towards the lungs of hell, but it was sure close to it (I am not sure about that last metaphor, but I will leave it be.Though I liked “Desolation” it was a little hard for me to distinguish a pattern or a theme that the band chose to follow and concentrate. In general, it sounded to me like the common stuff that have been a part of Power Metal, along with the same belligerent and flamboyant strong riffing, melodic nature, precision and above normal features provided by the music. I think that WARDRUM has quite a potential to rise up above many other bands in their local scene and within their continent. While most of the old school efforts sound more modern than what those were supposed to sound, there are always bands standing in the corner waiting to show out their faces with burning red eyes filled with wild old energies to carry on the burning bright flame.

Album:

“Mavericks” is the fifth studio album by WARDRUM, the Power / Progressive Metallers from Thessaloniki, Greece. It actually marks an important anniversary: 10 years of the band’s presence in discography, 10 years since the release of their debut album. This particular new album also marks the beginning of a very important chapter in the band’s career, as it is actually the first album featuring the band’s new singer, George Margaritopoulos who joined forces with the band back in 2019. This album is his official debut with WARDRUM.There is another important feature on this particular release. For the first time in their artistic saga, WARDRUM are delivering a concept album: It deals with (or rather, forms the soundtrack to) the story of Messenger, the winged faceless figure that appears on all of the band’s album artwork. “Mavericks – The Story Of The Messenger”, is a novella of 130 pages, written by Stergios Kourou. The book combines mythology, fantasy and contemporary views on the ancient world, presented and expanded through a magnificent story that will be available as a limited edition printed book, as well as a downloadable ebook.Lets focus on the music. There are some very important features that should be mentioned about this record. First of all it is obvious and clear that WARDRUM have managed to build their very own, almost unique and very special musical formula: a sonic trademark that makes the band recognizable among thousands and thousands similar bands on their Power / Progressive style. And you know what? This is a very big bet, a very important goal and there is actually only one word that can describe the result in the case of WARDRUM: success. Yes, the “Mavericks” album can be described as the ultimate and perfect example that confirms all the above.Perfect songwriting is the strongest -and actually unbeatable- feature that makes this band so special. And in my opinion WARDRUM have delivered some of the most outstanding compositions of their entire career in this particular new release. Vreto and Kourou who are the main composers in the band have reached their higher composing levels on this album. Musically we got an outstanding mix of US Power Metal in the vein of VICIOUS RUMORS, RIOT -“Thundersteel” era- and CRIMSON GLORY -first two albums-. The perfectly balanced Progressive elements that also identify the band’s sound since their early days, are also shaping a big presence on the new material bringing in mind bands like TITAN FORCE, FATES WARNING -“No Exit”, “Perfect Symmetry” era- and QUEENSRYCHE. Especially on those 11 new songs I have also discovered a strong SYMPHONY X vibe -from their 10s discography-, mainly on the guitar parts and on the overall song arrangements.WARDRUM was, is and will always be a guitar driven band. We can easily just talk about riffing when we refer to any typical Power Metal group but for the case of WARDRUM we can only refer to complete guitar themes that become a trademark basis on the band’s songwriting. Kosta Vreto and J. Demian are delivering a full forced twin guitar heaven based on melodies inspired not only by the Metal universe but also by the spirit and the blessing of some very important Greek composers like Chatzinasios and Chatzidakis. The lead guitar parts of each and every song can be described only by a single word: excellence. And you know what? Go and read one more time the above paragraph where I analyze the WARDRUM sound formula: Those twin lead guitar parts are part of the recipe. Oh yes, and the guitar solos are brilliant. Have I already pointed that? Well I am doing it now.Stergios Kourou put his indelible seal on the WARDRUM vision:You would not easily discover a drummer that composes a big part of his band’s music, you would not easily discover a drummer that gives life to his band’s songs through such wonderful lyrics. And you would not easily discover a drummer who offers an ultimate soul expression just with two sticks on a kit. Through his performance Kourou is actually blessing his spiritual children: the WARDRUM songs. The out of this universe Kourou drumming is perfectly matched with the adventurous bass playing of Mr. Strutter who also makes his recording debut as a WARDRUM member on this album. Trivia: Go and check his other Heavy / Power Metal band: DIARY OF SECRETS. You will not regret it.George Margaritopoulos brings a new and fresh vocal aura into the band. I have been following him since his early days in DESTINY DAWN and I can assure you that on this album he is reaching his vocal peak. Excellent vocal melodies, wide range and from the soul expression are the main vocal features that would transform the new WARDRUM songs into absolute musical jewels. What about the production? Well, I can only describe ussing one word: Huge. The album’s sound simply blew me away, simple as that. Kosta Vreto handled the mixing of the album, Strutter is responsible for the mastering, they both have done an excellent job. The artwork and layout of the album is again done by Piotr Szafraniec. The “Messenger” is back in all his glory.Well, what else can I write? I would better go and spin the album for one more time, sometimes words are difficult to describe a masterpiece and yes “Mavericks” is a masterpiece. It is a powerful and inspired album presenting a hard working band. The music maintains WARDRUM’s familiar, technical, yet straightforward style, through a bunch outstanding compositions that take the band another step forward in songwriting, storytelling and performance. In my opinion this is one of the most important artistic steps on the band’s career, well they have actually raised the bar even more with this one. I am very curious to see what the future will bring for them, form now on.To cut a long story sort here we got the Power Metal album of the year and one of the top Metal releases for 2021. If you search for the perfect mix of Power and Intelligence, then search no more. “Mavericks” is here.
