Bio:

TRICK OR TREAT are a crazy bunch of musicians: they are one tight power metal band and they sure deliver the goods on stage, but they also like to share some fun with their audience – that’s why everybody loves them.Formed back in 2002 by lead guitarist Luca Cabri and initially performing as a tribute to Helloween, they quickly got very popular and played the most renown live clubs around Italy: after a couple of intense years on the stage, they recorded the “Like Donald Duck” 4-piece demo and signed a deal with Valery Records for their first full-length, named “Evil Needs Candy Too”, which came out in 2006. The debut got a terrific response and put TRICK OR TREAT back on the road for the following two years, playing over 100 gigs in Europe and U.S.A.Nevertheless, the guys kept writing more songs and in 2009 they gave birth to their second LP, called “Tin Soldiers”, which features Michael Kiske (Helloween, Place Vendôme) on two songs and Michele Luppi (Vision Divine, Killing Touch) on another one: as expected, the record receives a brilliant feedback on the scene (for instance, it breaks on the Japanese charts at the 29th place) and the band plays some top festivals, like the Agglutination, the Palasharp I-Metal Fest and the Italian Gods Of Metal. Last but absolutely not least, TRICK OR TREAT have also been recently selected as opener band for Helloween’s “The 7 Sinners World Tour 2010/11” together with special guest Stratovarius. In early 2012, Luca Turilli announced that the Trick or Treat’s singer Alessandro Conti is the new lead singer of the band “Luca Turilli’s RHAPSODY”. the first album: “Ascending to infinity” is already a hit in metal-charts all over the world. In the 2012, Trick or Treat come back with a new album, a concept inspired by the novel of Richard Adams “Wathersip down”, which features Andre Matos on one track. The album’s called “Rabbits’ Hill pt.1″ TRICK OR TREAT? Make your choice…

Album:

There are a lot of what ifs in the annals of German power metal. What if Michael Kiske had stuck with Helloween rather than going into a semi-hiatus for 15 years from Metal? What if “Pink Bubbles Go Ape” had been a more consistent album? What if Edguy still played in the genre that yielded up such undeniable classics as “Theater Of Salvation” and “Mandrake”? What if Ralf Scheepers decided to form a Gamma Ray oriented project rather than the Judas Priest inspired power house that is Primal Fear? The list goes on, all of them centered around the foundation of the late 90s power metal revival in Europe. In essence, all of these hypothetical situations converge in a single band which, as irony would have it, hails from Italy and has thrown off the symphonic clichés of their homeland in favor of a more straight up approach.Fresh off an impressive yet goofy debut in “Evil Needs Candy Too”, Trick Or Treat has upped the ante here with a sizable slab of pure, unfettered catchiness, delivered up at warp speed. All of the triumphant major key choruses, high flying lead breaks, fast paced drumming and soaring falsettos that typified Kiske era Helloween and early Edguy are unapologetically painted on this album’s forehead. Vocalist Alessandro Conti, who does have a heavily similar vocal persona to that of the singers in both aforementioned bands, is joined by the ex-Helloween front man on roughly half the songs on here, marking the latest in a long line of temporary returns to the metal world for power metal’s favorite wayward son. Perhaps it is hoping against hope that Kiske will ever join a band in our beloved genre on a permanent basis, but I’m still not giving it up regardless.Song for song, this is on the simpler side as far as German bands go, though definitely more complex than the earlier speed metal affiliates in Running Wild and Grave Digger. There’s no 13 minute epics in the vain of what Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath used to come up with, though there are occasional instrumental interchanges that come fairly close to Helloween’s early work with Deris. Such blistering speed fests as “Paper Dragon” and “Freedom” showcase a band that knows how to merge the techniques of speed metal with something of a pop/punk feel, while avoiding the overindulgence and videogame gimmicks of Dragonforce. “Rocket To The Sky” takes the same speed approach and mixes in some nifty, outer space keyboard sounds that drift perhaps a tiny bit closer to the famed British Guitar Hero phenomenon, but still stay well within the bounds of tastefulness.Perhaps the only area where the band takes a little bit of a break from owning the now sparely populated field of Helloween revivalism is the album’s lone ballad. In many ways, “Tears Against Your Smile” could be likened to Kiske’s solo music, albeit with implied tendencies towards an orthodox power ballad that is well within the element of a band like this. Conti and Kiske work extremely well in this capacity, as the former’s somewhat lighter and operatic voice provides a subtle yet noticeable contrast to the latter’s signature Geoff Tate tendencies. It’s mostly acoustic and mellow, but it is as catchy as they get and stands out amongst a barrage of high quality, yet highly derivative music. To anyone who has asked any of the questions contained in the beginning remarks here, this is the closest thing that you’ll likely get to answering all of them. It’s probably been said a thousand times before in a thousand different situations, but the truth is, they don’t make them like this anymore. The only thing that really works against this album and makes it slightly less extravagant than most of the bands it’s drawing influences from is the extremely orthodox approach to songwriting. It’s highly entertaining, but it is also very predictable. But like with any other gift, good things are not exclusive to those that come as a complete surprise.

Album:

I remember I was seven years old when the tale of Watership Down was released as a film. I had never read the book, but as a young child, I identified so much with the Rabbits of Sandleford – especially Fiver, a runt rabbit who was a seer who foresaw the destruction of the warren and convinced all to seek out a new home. General Woundwort was such a creepy villain – so sinisterly portrayed by the voice of Harry Andrews and the animations by Warner Animation Group. It is a story that doesn’t find its way onto many metal albums, but Italy’s Trick or Treat has made a two part album series centered on the Richard Adams classic. It’s no shock though, since Trick or Treat has always had very quirky lyrical themes. This entire concept and adaptation to music has been gloriously spectacular. “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 1” is now four years old and “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 2” is well worth the wait. By far, it stands as Trick or Treat’s finest album to date. When “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 1” left off, it was the apocalyptic vision that Fiver had of “The Black Rabbit of Death” – where he witnesses the destruction of the Sandleford warren. The original song in the film adaptation – “Bright Eyes” - was performed by the legendary Art Garfunkel, but Trick or Treat's version at the conclusion of Pt. 1 was just as spectacular. The story in “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 2” picks up right off with “Inle – The Black Rabbit of Death” and Fiver convincing the rest of the warren of its impending doom at the hands of the humans and the need to find a new home.If you are familiar with the story, the group moves to Watership Down and realize there are no female rabbits to propagate the new warren, so they make a daring rescue of does from neighboring Efrada, a police state warren ruled by the evil General Woundwort. The General – played on the album by Tim “Ripper” Owens – leads a violent attack on Watership Down, but is defeated when the rabbits unleash the watchdog of Nuthanger Farm. Though his body is never found, he exists as the bogeyman told in stories to generations of kits. But I digress…The one thing that is very noticeable about Trick or Treat as time goes on is a much more defined Trick or Treat sound. However, this is power metal folks, so naturally every time you hear something in the vein, visions of Kai and The Dome naturally come to mind. The material here presents tasteful and grand orchestration without drowning out Guido Benedetti and Luca Venturelli’s guitars. Conti really has fun with the material and you can hear it in his voice, which is slightly less formal than the classical themes required with Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. On “Rabbits’ Hill Pt 2,” the band certainly used the layaway to craft the songwriting and refine the sound further to make it much catchier and more power metal than Pt. I. Songs like “Inle’ (The Black Rabbit of Death),” “Efrada,” “They Must Die,” and album favorite “United” really grab the listener with driving riffs and brilliant choruses. Just after the epic 10+ minute “The Showdown” where Woundwart is defeated, the album ends much like “Pt 1” – with a stunning and beautiful ballad (“Last Breath”).The same production team was brought in from “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 1” – so with Simone Mularoni’s stamp of perfection there is little to worry about on the mix and sound of “Rabbits’ Hill Pt. 2,” unless you long for the “natural tinny sound” of the 80’s. The guest stars this time around (remember it was Andre Matos, Sonia Piacentini, Fabio Dessi and the great Damna Moras on Pt. 1) are equally as brilliant. Sara Squandrani (Ancient Bards) puts forth a shit ton of soul in her duet performance on “Never Say Goodbye,” which comes across like a modern Sonata Arctica track. That leads me to the next guest – Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica) – who lends his voice on “United,” which is by far the album's most impressive track. However, Ripper shreds in “They Must Die,” adding a real dose of evil to the album outside of the death metal vox included in “Inle’ (The Black Rabbit of Death)” as General Woundwort. It’s so wonderful to see this band come into its own and truly be a force to reckon with rather than just a “Helloween tribute band who the guy from Rhapsody sings for.” This is, however, where Alle started. “Rabbits Hill Pt. 2” presents a much more powerful release both in terms of songwriting and orchestration. The band has taken this Watership Down theme and made it the defining companion album series which will distinguish them for years to come…”Rabbit Fly Free!”.Highs: Fantastic power driven metal with a great story and tasteful orchestration.Lows: As with most power metal, there isn't much variation for the prog lover and nothing for the extreme fans.Bottom line: Join Fiver, Hazel, Bigwig, Bluebell, Strawberry and Holly as they battle General Woundwort in the thrilling conclusion of "Rabbits' Hill, Pt. 2!"

Album:

TRICK OR TREAT have published the cover of "Re-animated", their new studio album containing versions of cartoon classics. Dragonball, David the Gnome or Pikatchu, are some of the series that, under the direction of Alessandro Conti, vocalist of the band, have reviewed for the occasion. The dream of every metalhead nerd has finally seen the light: an entire album of heavy metal covers dedicated to the initials of cartoons that have enlivened the afternoons of many longtime admirers of heavy sounds. To give life to this forbidden pleasure we thought the Trick Or Treat, who for several years had already approached this matter by presenting live some songs ("David Gnome My Friend", "Robin Hood" and "Daitarn 3") and thus making the happiness of the fans under the stage. "Re-Animated" is an extremely anomalous album in the discography of the Modena combo, so much to opt for self-production through crowdfunding on the Musicraiser platform. The result is a record composed of no less than 19 tracks that try to recover the classics of the '80s and' 90s. Depending on personal taste, listeners may be satisfied with the choice made, however some famous pieces ("Devil Man", "Steel Robot Jeeg", "Ken The Warrior", "What's My Destiny Dragonball") can be heard in their new and sparkling metal versions, surrounded by others rather fanciful.Beyond the pleasant rewriting performed on all the tracks, those that jump the most are the ones interpreted by Cristina D'Avena in the original versions ("Batman", "Jem", "David Gnomo Amico Mio", "Prince Valiant "," The Mystery of the Blue Stone "," Robin Hood "). Definitely drowned at the time almost always by a flat and sugary interpretation, in the performance of Trick Or Treat can finally come to life, fully showing all the qualities that could only be understood at the time of their transmission on television. Merit also, without wanting to remove any value to the test of Alessandro Conti, special guests who further embellish the individual tracks. Chiara Tricarico (Teodasia) on "The Mystery of the Blue Stone" or Sara Squadrani (Ancient Bards) on "Jem" show us finally how it should be a real female singer on an acronym, giving personality and a greater vocal range. The violin tour in "David Gnomo Amico Mio", instead, at the time taken from the song "Samarcanda" by Roberto Vecchioni - who in turn had recovered it from "Dance Dance Dance" by Neil Young -, buys a whole new vitality: merit of the combination of folk / power that binds the Trick Or Treat of Conti to Elvenking by Damnagoras, more than a guessed guest of this song. The radiance of the original goes well with the happy metal of Modena.Looking at the classics, those pieces certainly more rooted in the memory of those in the 80s, the "Steel Robot Jeeg" by Conti and Giacomo Voli (Rhapsody Of Fire) does not leave much to be desired: between the keyboards power and the apt choice of Flights that surely can reach the treble of Fogus, original singer of this acronym, the song flows away like a burst of energy, a concentrate of ignorance and power that beats without too much difficulty the version made by Pelù a few years ago which, apart from a good surf atmosphere, had little to do with the original, especially under the vocal plan. The same goes for "Ken Il Guerriero", which requires little restyling, just enough to make it a little metal. The atmosphere of the original remains perfectly unchanged and the additions of electric guitar that give variety increase the degree of epicity of a piece that will remain in the empyrean of the acronyms. "Devil Man" and "Daitarn 3" also belong by right to this cartoon character. Steva Deathless (Deathless Legacy) on the first and Michele Luppi (Secret Sphere, Whitesnake) on the second do not lack respect for the originals. If with "Daitarn 3" the work was definitely easy, given a certain amount of heaviness of the historical piece, with "Devil Man" you opt for a faithful version, only slightly more heavy. The guitar work on the piece dedicated to one of the most famous robottoni leaves open-mouthed, while in both cases the two guest singers become authors of an interpretation that is nothing short of perfect. Four songs that alone are worth all the purchase price. In the 90s section, the presence of Giorgio Vanni is definitely smiling as a guest in one of his songs: "What's My Destiny Dragonball" acquires a happy atmosphere typical of the sound of Trick Or Treat that is a good thing since the presence of Vanni makes this song the least personal of the whole lot. In fact, we do not have that surprise effect present in the other pieces and the interpretation, albeit at a good level, refers too much to the original. "Beyblade - Metal Masters" is a pleasant surprise taken from Vanni's discography. In this case, the special guest is Danny Metal, a musician well known for his metal versions of songs that in the original of heavy have very little and of initials of cartoons.

Album:

TRICK OR TREAT is a 5-Piece Power Metal Band from Modena, Italy. Throughout 2019 and the early parts of 2020 (from March 2019 to February 2020), this band released singles each month representing the specific zodiac signs. I believe this is the first time I have ever heard a band doing this and this album is a compilation of all these songs put together. This is also the first album since ‘’Re-Animated’’ that came out back in 2018. The album was partly crowdfunded and they reached their goal rather quick so it shows how passionate their fans truly are.For people that don’t know, this band started as a HELLOWEEN tribute band, hence the name of the band. In 2003 they did a live album with only HELLOWEEN covers on them and it peaked the interest of many people. It’s not easy doing a cover of any HELLOWEEN songs, it’s rather difficult to have the right pitch, the right vocal range. Hell, MASTERPLAN did an album of only covers of HELLOWEEN a few years back and it sucked so bad, it was rather disappointing to say the least! They evolved as a tried and true Power Metal band afterwards and have been constantly churning new albums since 2006 and have been on countless European Metal festivals and have established a nice fanbase. I am quite happy to discover this band with you guys and see what all the hype is all about.Power Metal is supposed to make you happy, make you dance, make you feel great. It’s a bit tongue in cheek obviously and some bands obviously don’t take them too seriously but that’s just fine by me. The genre itself is supposed to make you feel good, and in these dark times, you need a positive band like TREAT OR TREAT. I know a lot of people out there are extremely depressed, isolation does get to you and you feel lost. There is despair and you really like its hopeless, you need something to get your groove back. The genre is there like a beacon of hope for many people, including me.Don’t expect any innovative songwriting yet the lyrical and concept ideas are really a nice departure from the genre. Their music can be obviously be label as Modern Melodic Power Metal. The whole album conveys something really uplifting. The lead singer Alessandro Conti is one of the best unknown Power Metal singers out there, he can compete with any of the giants out there like Fabio Leone, Tobias Sammet or even Timo Kotipelto. His high-pitched wails and impressive range gives this band a rather significant edge in an overcrowded genre. I think he does stand out from the rest of the band and drives the and. He is very energetic yet composed singer, he is able to give time and space to the other band members to really shine. That’s the mark of a great frontman that’s for damn sure. This album is truly the representation of what this band is all about, it eliminates any doubt in the minds of the listener. They largely keep in check with their genre conventions yet I felt hey gave it a fresh coat of paint. You have some killer hooks and choruses and it makes for a highly enjoyable experience that doesn’t wear on the memory. No song seem to passed as filler and the zodiac lyrical content is something really different and that caught my eye right at the start. They have accomplished so much with this opus and you have some very energetic orchestration going on that keeps you wanting more. The production of the album seems to be better than the previous effort. It felt less compressed and the sound is much clearer. It gives the music more room to breather and allows the band to be at it’s full potential. It’s a technically impressive and upbeat album and it’s perfect for times like these. It’s Power Metal that is deliciously epic one hell of an experience from beginning to end.

Album:

"The Unlocked Songs" - this is the title of the new work - falls in between an album of unreleased music and a collection of assorted goodies scattered over almost two decades of brilliant career.A compelling and amusing "b-sides greatest hits", "The Unlocked Songs" includes unreleased songs, remixes, covers, rare bonus-tracks, acoustic versions and demo tracks that will just make you feel better. The album highlights include a thrilling cover of the Misfits’ classic hit ‘Scream’ and the outstanding voice of the late, great Andre Matos in "Prince With a 1000 Enemies", which was originally released in 2012.Uplifting heavy metal for these dark times: Trick Or Treat are men on a mission and, most of all, men of their word.

Album:

Trick or Treat are a band I learned to appreciate. Maybe all the albums we’ve reviewed here 2020’s “The Legend of the XII Saints,” and 2021’s “The Unlocked Songs” which in fact was a compilation. Compilations give us the opportunity to have a glimpse at a band’s career. If not accurate, at least a good glimpse.“Creepy Symphonies” is an album of new ones where the band does what they better and that is a very Melodic Power Metal that sometimes reminds a lot of Helloween. Little by little I get used to this and I looked for the subtle personal touches of the band. Just for the record there are plenty. To understand Trick or Treat better or deeper, if my dear child of the might prefers, it’s interesting to get a look at the band’s lyrical and imagery contents. The band follows some kind of Helloween influence on both matters though with lots more doses of cynicism and donw to Earth attitude. The band loves to make funny statements regarding to creepy images most of all to Halloween, now the popular party. The tittle “Creepy Symphonies” fits like a glove on the band’s proposal. But I guess the cyniscism on that matter and the down to Earth attitude explain better the band in tracks as “Crazy,” which is about the insane today’s commitement to be as productive as hell. “Have a Nice Judgement Day” adds some more interesting lines on that. The chorus “I will look through my sunglasses (burn in flames) I will buy a brand new dress (it’’s a judment day)” gives a glimpse on many people’s attitude towards the enviromental catastrophy that will eventually happen to us all. Well, above all, Metal music must have a critical opinion on the planet’s fate. I guess.Ok, then, and how about the music inside “Creepy Symphonies”? If my dear child of the night knows the band it gets much easier to tell a few lines about the music. Well, it doesn’t change a bit from the previous albums. What many followers of the “change for change’s sake” credo may think it’s a con, I actually think it’s a pro. Don’t mess with success I tell you all. It’s the hard and melodic Power Metal the band has been performing for some time around. From where I’m standing it means attitude or even commitement. As I said before there are lots of personal details in the band that I do appreciate a lot. The quantity of guitar solos is just one of them. “Creepy Symphonies” an album worth it.P.S.: I guess the fact of the album to be released on April 1st is no coincidence. Well, I don’t believe in coincidences.Trick or Treat “Creepy Symphonies” will be released on April 01st via Scarlet Records.
