Based out of Los Angeles, California, WITHERFALL is the collective brainchild of guitarist Jake Dreyer (ICED EARTH, KOBRA AND THE LOTUS, WHITE WIZZARD), singer Joseph Michael (WHITE WIZZARD) and the late Adam Sagan (CIRCLE II CIRCLE, INTO ETERNITY). With Dreyer and Michael having previously worked together in WHITE WIZZARD and Sagan collaborating on with Dreyer on the critically acclaimed debut instrumental EP, "In The Shadows Of Madness" — which included a featured track for the popular video game franchise Rock Band — the trio combined forces to begin writing for the new project in 2013.Eager to resonate their ideas, WITHERFALL headed to Phoenix, Arizona to record their debut album, "Nocturnes And Requiems", with engineer Ralph Patlan (MEGADETH, Brian "Head" Welch, MSG) in late 2014. The album was then sent on to New York City for mixing and mastering by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (ROB ZOMBIE, QUEENSRŸCHE, HATEBREED) at Planet Z. Resulting in eight masterfully executed tracks featuring the group's dynamic blend of darkened melodic and progressive metal, "Nocturnes And Requiems" is scheduled for release on February 10, 2017."Nocturnes And Requiems" is dedicated to the life of Adam Sagan, who passed on December 7, 2016 during the final stages of production. The band collectively commented: "This, as we know, is the last piece of work that Adam contributed and played on."Adam's talent, passion and personality is woven throughout every part of this record as he was easily one third of the creative force."'Nocturnes and Requiems' was a name that Adam eerily came up with one evening when we were figuring out album titles, [and it] would not have sounded the way it does now without his immense contribution on and off the drums."Adam, we love you, and it's a tragedy that you were not able to see this release. Showcasing the melancholic cover artwork painted by Kristian Wåhlin (BATHORY, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WINTERSUN), "End Of Time" presents a unique approach to the idea of a modern metal song with memorable melodic hooks, big choruses and dynamically aggresive vocals combined with virtuosic guitar playing reminiscent of the legends of the neoclassical shred guitar scene and a progressive rhythm section featuring modern extreme drumming techniques and fusion influenced bass lines.

It’s a horrible thing when during the final production stages of a debut release a band member passes away. Dedicated to the memory of their late band member, drummer Adam Sagan (Circle II Circle, White Empress, Into Eternity) who, in 2016 died, at the age of 36, after a valiant battle with cancer is Witherfall’s Nocturnes & Requiems. Larger-than-life, atmospheric as hell, straightforward, with incredible shredding guitars, aggressive, massive in its delivery, drums that pound is Witherfall’s first full-length release, and their follow-up to their debut EP. Fundamentals of Dream Theater and even Firewind can certainly be felt, but fans of Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Psychotic Waltz, Evergrey, and Nightingale will want to be all over this one, for Good Lord, this one is one astounding release.The combined dream of guitarist Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth, White Wizzard) vocalist Joseph Michael (White Wizzard) and drummer Adam Sagan, Witherfall began to take shape in 2013 in Los Angeles. Fast forward to 2017 and we have this, the album we are talking about here. Songs shift from the truly heavy, to the soft and sorrowful to the furious, to the elegant and heartfelt, to the macabre, sometimes all within the span of one single song. Never knowing what’s to come from the next musical bar is what keeps the interest high. The way the songs grow and progress from moment to moment showcases a unique talent the boys of Witherfall have. It’s not an easy thing for a band to allow so many sentiments to shine through an entire album much less one song, but Witherfall here makes it look – and sound – easy. The musicianship is incredible. The guitar solos are extraordinary, and with it come vocals that transcend from shrieks to the melodic.This album surpassed so many expectations, for what an experience this was. Listen to the amazing, shifting back and forth from melodic to heavy is the opening track “Portrait,” with its double bass drums, almost growling vocals, guitar hooks, riffs, and solos. From there check out the speed at which “Sacrifice,” comes barreling toward you, and “What We Are Dying For” will crush your skull. Elegant acoustic and electric guitars escort heavenly vocals on the frightening “The Great Awakening.” Beautiful doesn’t always mean gentle, and to prove it listen to “End Of Time, and the way it went from soft to heavy back to soft with razor sharp guitar riffs and lyrics talking about “living with no remorse,” and “coming to the end of time, and a promise of paradise.” A CD highlight if ever there was one, “End Of Time” showcased guitar work that was beyond superior and will prove that Jake Dreyer belongs in the same company as many of the world’s Neo-classical shredding masters. The intense, passionate, short instrumental “Finale” took this album into almost a doom metal genre, and the closing track “Nobody Sleeps Here,” is a head-nodding mid-tempo song with great synthesizers and bass guitars.In the Metal heavens above, Adam can rest easy knowing that here on earth Nocturnes & Requiems is a triumph all the way around and an achievement worthy of the highest accolades. His work is sorely missed, but we have this collection of songs to carry his legacy forward. The fact that radio will overlook this band and this album is a true injustice and travesty. What a magnificent gift this was to us, the fans of Metal. Rest easy, Adam, for you and your band mates has come up with what could be one of the highlight releases of 2017.

US dark melodic metal masters Witherfall will release the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017's "Nocturnes And Requiems" on November 2, 2018. The band reveals more details about this stunning new offering: "A Prelude To Sorrow is a concept record, though not in the sense that most people have come to know the form. Ours is not a story where each song acts as a chapter. The inspiration lays in the supremely dark reality that was the passing of our drummer and one of our best friends, Adam Sagan. These songs are raw emotional reflections, composed in the witching hours under the influence of wine and sorrow, while watching and helping our friend fight and ultimately lose his battle with lymphoma.Nocturnes And Requiems was dedicated to Adam after the fact. A Prelude To Sorrow is written specifically about his and our personal tragedy. Like Nocturnes And Requiems, the songs have been arranged to still have the peaks and valleys that any great record should. With A Prelude To Sorrow, these peaks just might be a little steeper and the valleys might be a little deeper, alternating between violence and beauty. The titles initials are an acronym for Adam Paul Sagan. He came up with Nocturnes And Requiems, so we suppose it is kind of fitting that he also inspired this title. Hope he doesn't come knocking on our door for royalties. We hope that this will be a fitting requiem for our friend and talented musician." Given its tragic background, main songwriters Joseph Michael (vocals, Sanctuary) and Jake Dreyer (guitars, Iced Earth) succeeded in perfectly combining the band's technical proficiency with an appropriate eerie and somber atmosphere, manifesting also in Kristian Wåhlin's majestic cover painting. For mix and mastering, Witherfall again worked with Chris Zeuss Harris (Sanctuary, Queensrÿche, Iced Earth).

Right before embarking on an acoustic tour with Finnish metallers Sonata Arctica, Witherfall unleashes a new EP entitled ‘Vintage’. Witherfall is the brainchild of the creative duo featuring Joseph Michael and Jake Dreyer. The first one’s known from Sanctuary while the latter is a part of Iced Earth. The two guys added Anthony Crawford, Alex Hasla and Steve Bolognese to Witherfall and it’s this quintet that worked on ‘Vintage’.‘Vintage’ consists out of two cover versions and some redone songs from earlier two studio albums. While recording the latest longplayer ‘A Prelude to Sorrow’ Witherfall also recorded two cover song that were so far not published and now they will see the light of day on ‘Vintage’. The first song that comes out of this session is Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Witherfall adds an own identity to this rock anthem and it’s a melancholic undertone that intensifies the emotional impact. It’s a good interpretation of the classic and can surely stand next to the original Tom Petty hit. The second cover version has a totally different background. It’s Helloween’s emotional ballad ‘A Tale That Wasn’t Right’, which is redone by the quintet and it doesn’t end up on a bad spot either. The difference though is, that this song is so much connected to Michael Kiske’s voice that the cover can’t reach the intensity of the Helloween version. Anyhow, a good attempt, but a really high bar to reach.Next to these two track it’s ‘Vintage’ from the sophomore album that’s not only the name giver of this EP, but also translated into a three songs medley that also includes with ‘Nobody Sleeps Here’ a tune from the debut album.What else? ‘Ode to Despair’ has been re-arranged and comes as an acoustic song and it’s the Japan single release ‘The Long Walk Home (December)’ that now becomes available for everybody. Witherfall impressed with their first two albums and with ‘Vintage’ the guys add another well-crafted release to their discography. ‘Vintage’ allows Witherfall to stress their musical framework and is a welcomed publication for the ongoing acoustic tour.

After a headlong dive into the aesthetics of classic ’80s horror movies with the clip for “As I Lie Awake,” WITHERFALL are further exploring their nightmarish journey with the NSFW video for “The Other Side of Fear,” which was directed by Cig Neutron and KasL. Watch it below.“‘The Other Side of Fear’ video is a nightmare-scape starring Cig Neutron, Rannie Rodil, and Sin Twisted,” the band shares. “Cig Neuron and his team managed to capture the core themes of the song. The video highlights the lyrical panic and anxious, fear-driven delivery of the music. The video is unsettling, creative, and definitely NSFW.”As for the song, the band continues, “This song is the oldest track on this record. Joseph had the title and basic melody and theme. The music was written around it, usually at the end of each writing session. The piece was initially started during the ‘A Prelude to Sorrow‘ sessions, where the verses and chorus were complete. As we progressed with the writing of “A Prelude To Sorrow,” it became apparent we were writing a rock opera about Adam Sagan and ‘The Other Side of Fear’ did not really fit thematically. The song was finished in Las Vegas after a debaucherously ridiculous evening.”Witherfall’s “Curse of Autumn” is scheduled for a worldwide street date of March 5, 2021, with the U.S. vinyl available April 2.Witherfall previously released the cinematic video for “As I Lie Awake.” The clip was directed by Zev Deans (Ghost, Behemoth, Chelsea Wolfe, St. Vincent.) Witherfall’s genre-bending new record does not necessarily defy classification, but to pin it down to a specific metal subgenre does the record an injustice. A necessary evil, subgenre categorization allows for a convenient way to navigate the vast waters of modern heavy metal. Gone are the good old days when bands of a different ilk like Black Sabbath and Cheap Trick were both considered “heavy metal.” Instead, the metalhead of 2021 is lost in a labyrinth of genres, subgenres, and microgenres. At its best this taxonomy allows the listener to easily discover a band using genre taglines as a guide. At its worst it can either stifle creativity in a band who wants to reach a target demographic or prevent a listener from hearing a band that they might otherwise love because say they added a Death Metal riff to a New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal song. All this to say that ‘Curse of Autumn’s’ roots are firmly planted in a variety of landscapes converging into a wholly habitable sphere that is more than the sum of its parts and it thrives as a result.Following the buildup of the folk inflected preamble “Deliver Us Into The Arms of Eternal Silence,” whose mouthful of a name belies its brief runtime, the neoclassical fury of “The Last Scar” decimates everything in its path. Balancing uber technicality with bouts of aggression and traditional songcraft, the song shines a spotlight on the hyper-shred of industry veteran guitarist Jake Dreyer and the aggressive yet melodic vocalizations of singer/keyboardist Joseph Michael.The twisted bass groove of the almost funky intro to “As I Lie Awake,” gives the limelight to bassist Anthony Crawford before the song launches into the classic metal chug of the verse and pre chorus. Building momentum, the song diverges into an infectious singalong chorus with multi-tracked vocals taking flight and soaring above the din.“Another Face” trades the downbeat arpeggios of the verses with the monolithic downstroke pummel of the choruses. Michael’s expressive and versatile vocals underscoring why he was the only viable replacement for the late, great Warrel Dane in Sanctuary.Elsewhere, the acoustic warmth and stirring sentimentality of the unexpected, but not completely out of place “The River” is a ray of sunshine in a dark place. With its epic guitar solo and end-of-tune glass shattering vocals, it is decidedly more Europe than “European Power Metal,” and it stands out in its simplicity with a directness that serves as an enjoyable mid-record palette cleanser.The record closer, a cover of Boston’s “Long Time” taps into the same vibe as “The River,” with mixed results. The acoustic setting successfully highlights the sadness of the lyrics, something lost in the bombastic delivery of the original; however, it feels like a superfluous coda to a solid collection of original tunes.The rootsy folk that opens the interlude “Curse of Autumn,” finds Michael in renaissance balladeer mode. Featuring some of the prettiest vocal melodies and harmonies on the record, the understated hymn is juxtaposed by its companion piece, the peculiarly titled and outstanding instrumental “The Unyielding Grip of Each Passing Day.” On a tune that manages to be both tasteful and shred-tastic, Dreyer’s flights of fancy surf the taut, weaving rhythms of Crawford and progressive drummer extraordinaire Marco Minnemann.“..And They All Blew Away,” the last original tune on the record ends things on an epic and suitably dark note. The song begins with atmospheric minor key arpeggios overlaid with Michael’s weathered, low-register croon. Acoustic lead guitars and textured synths ease into the angular riffs of an expansive instrumental prelude before returning to the initial vocal motif. With a 15-minute runtime, there’s bound to be a few detours, and Witherfall oblige with an “everything but the kitchen sink” approach. Syncopated riffs, mathy time signatures, bludgeoning aggression, and searing leads collide on an extensive mid-song riff-fest. Fortunately, the instrumental prowess of the musicians, and Michael’s ability to interject passion and tunefulness prevent the song from being crushed beneath its own weight. The song resolves to a more traditional song structure tempering an angry pre-chorus with a glimmer of hope via the optimistic earworm chorus.Dense, dark, and progressive, Witherfall’s new record ‘Curse of Autumn’ is frequently aggressive, sometimes tuneful, and always masterfully executed.

Not one to cut corners, Witherfall enlisted famed drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson) on "Curse Of Autumn", ensuring the foundations of singles "As I Lie Awake", "The Other Side Of Fear" and "The River" were second to none.
