Bio:

L.A.'s TYRANT was formed by bassist Greg May in Pasadena, California. In 1978, Greg formed a cover band in high school, which included Richard Fuentes on vocals, Tony Ramirez, Gary Crisp, Bill Stremmel on guitars, and Phil Heyleck on drums.By 1980, Greg had been asked to play with such groups as Metallica, W.A.S.P., Armored Saint, and Warlord. Guitarist Rocky Rockwell's previous band, Visions, ironically featured Tim Gaines of Stryper. Rocky was one of the first guitar players to have an endorsement with Charvel Guitars other than Eddie Van Halen. One-time fill-in guitarist included Anthony Romero, formerly of Blood Lust.In 1982, the two recruited Greg's brother, Glen May, a two time high school All-American Football defensive end, to replace their previous singer, Doug Anderson, on lead vocal and front man requirements. "Doug also played guitar and looked like Peter Frampton." Greg explained. "But when I brought Glen in, it just clicked."Drummer, Rob Roy, rounded out the group, who appeared on Metal Massacre III ('83) and Legions of the Dead ('85). Previous drummers have included G. Stanley Burtis (Too Late To Pray '88) and Tom Meadows (King of Kings '97).Keyboard player and limo driver, Paris Lane, contributed to "Legions of the Dead", previously of Hollywood rock band, London. After two shows in Hollywood, California, Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records contacted Greg. The late-1983 release of "Battle of Armageddon", from the Metal Blade Records album "Metal Massacre III", was the result. After the release, the label was flooded with mail from all over the world demanding more vinyl from TYRANT. This lead to Metal Blade Records signing TYRANT to an international recording contract. The group returned to the studio with "Armageddon" producer, Bill Metoyer, to record TYRANT's debut LP, "Legions of the Dead", which was completed and released in 1985. The LP sold well and hit Kerrang Magazine's (Europe's biggest rock publication) Top 10 Import Chart for two months, therewith Def Leppard and Heart. TYRANT's single, "Listen to the Preacher," was featured on the "Best of Metal Blade, Volume 1" double LP in 1986. The LP included, among others, Slayer, Trouble, VoiVod, Metal Church, and Celtic Frost. In 1988, TYRANT again enlisted the services of producer Bill Metoyer to record and release "Too Late to Pray" -- their best effort to date. Again, TYRANT's LP attracted praise from both fans and magazines around the world. The band had been offered opening slots for groups such as Slayer, Savatage, and Mercyful Fate.TYRANT continued to play live and demo songs on 4-track. In 1994, Metal Massacre III was re-released on C.D. worldwide; after which all rights to TYRANT's material and band name were assigned to founder/bassist Greg May.In 1996, German record lable, Art of Music, won the battle for TYRANT's next record, and brought Greg May to Germany for a promo tour. Art of Music also put TYRANT back into the studio with long-time producer Bill Metoyer for the making of "King of Kings," released in 1996. In keeping with tradition, "King of Kings" gained international praise from fans and press alike. In 1997, TYRANT signed with Dwell Records to record Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Dio, Scorpions, Judas Priest, and Saxon tribute CD's that were released worldwide in '98-'99.In 2009, Tyrant was back playing in Hollywood and co-headlined the Keep It True XII Festival in Lauda-Konigshofen Germany. They are in the process of writing and will record a new record entitled "Here After" for a hopeful 2010 release.THE REIGN OF THE TYRANT CONTINUES.

Album:

During the years around 1985 many bands were finding their breaking point, while thrash seemed to be developing faster than ever, and other more obscure bands were taking things a step further with more speed and power, there was still room for even more innovation. Bands like Manilla Road were already writing the blueprints for epic metal, but Tyrant practically comes out of nowhere breaking the rules, and does things like no other band had done. There was hardly anything out there quite like this at the time, and even today it still sparks with originality.Vocalist Glen May is simply one of the best vocalists I've ever heard, and hands down one of my top favorites. This album shows a younger side with the vocals as well, since he throws out a huge amount of screams and shrieks compared to their later stuff, heck there weren't even any shrieks to be heard on King of Kings at all and most of the shrieks on their next album Too Late to Pray were usually only in the background. The majority of his vocals are spent in a more commanding mid-range, with the higher notes finishing off phrases or whatnot. The best comparison would probably be comparing his singing here to Harry Conklin's via Ample Destruction. Very demanding and extremely proud. It'd be a sin to stop the compliments there though. The rest of the band is nearly flawless as well. Rocky Rockwell puts out some of the catchiest rhythm's and riffs, and brings in the epic touch to this album with the guitars alone. Upbeat, dramatic, blisteringly fast, catchy, diverse, its all there. Greg May never slips up a bit and knows his bass well. Rob Roy finalizes the group with his excellent ability on the drums, dynamic and poundingly tough. Don't expect a generic endless pattern of double bass, but diversity. The production itself is pretty heavy and has quite a crunch, with each instrument being very clear to hear including May's vocals. For being 1985, this is pretty damn good with the sound. The best thing about this album is the consistency. Every song is downright catchy, and every song is easy to get into no matter where you start. It starts off with Warriors of Metal which is definitely more straightforward than things to come (obviously with that kind of title, eh?). But at the same time, it may very well be the greatest song about -metal- ever written. You'll instantly get to know what this band is all about with this song alone, May's incredible vocals, the devastating power their performance gives off, and Rocky Rockwell's guitars will surely get your attention. Fall into the Hands of Evil takes you on a slower ride, preparing you for things to come still, and yet again this song is just catchier than ever. The Battle of Armageddon is when their style is truly defined. Starting off a little more dramatic and slower than others only to build up to the epic onslaught ahead. This is definitely when their epic factor kicks in. Next up is the self-titled track Legions of the Dead and pretty much does everything the previous song did, but even better. The next passable track teases with its hints towards their next album. Its under a minute long, so doesn't really do anything but translate the previous song to the next. Listen to the Preacher follows suit of previous songs with its structure, but does have an occasional goofy background chorus "Don't turn your back..." May sounds a bit too cheesy here, but oh well? Knight of Darkness again is jam packed with those catchy and upbeat rhythm's and fills in the empty space with some dark atmosphere. Thru the Night tends to gravitate back towards simplicity, a bit like the first track on the album. Regardless it doesn't feel too out of place. Sacrifice is another longer track decorated with nothing but emotion and atmosphere. The final track Time is Running Low is completely over the top, and seems to fuse their simpler and epic styles into one.Overall this album is extremely catchy and easily accessible for those who like a bit of aggression and atmosphere within their metal. Very consistent and the majority of the album is top notch. Though the epic taste is riddled throughout this album, it wouldn't come close to their masterpiece which would be their next release. Either way, Legions of the Dead still triumphs over an endless amount of bands out there, and is something that demands to be heard. This album screams metal pride!

Album:

Tyrant put out three albums back in the 80s and early 90s, and had a name that about a billion other bands shared. But these guys were just awesome, and you’ll really never hear anything like them again. Tyrant played a style of metal that was as heavy and thick as molasses, with a sludgy, brick-like guitar sound and a gooey, ominous sheen to the songwriting that added a lot of epic punch. I haven’t heard their other stuff, but Too Late to Pray is one hell of an album that I can’t stop listening to. Time and time again it pulls me back in…Tyrant are best when they slow down and churn out really epic, searing melodies with resident Norse God Glenn May’s deep, commanding grunts and growls over them. The compositions flow so well that you feel like you’re in the middle of the world they’ve painted; this dark, grungy, tormented apocalypse. Songs like the maelstrom of metallic melody “Valley of Death,” the booming “Babylon” or the thunderous “The Beginning of the End” are some of the finest the album has to offer. But you also get some really great faster, pugilistic tunes, too, like the one-two punch of the title track and “Beyond the Grave,” the dirty, nasty “Into the Flames” and the careening, kinetic firestorm of the very aptly titled “Eve of Destruction.”I just named over half the track list. Man, this is an awesome album. The only sticking point is the lyrics, which are a bit Christian-slanted…but not too much. Most of them are really pretty vague, and talk about faith in a very general, broad manner mostly related to surviving an apocalypse or fighting against evil. The only song that has outwardly preachy lyrics is “The Nazarene,” which isn’t one of the more memorable ones, anyway. I can get into the apocalyptic-survivor stuff pretty well, and the occasional slant towards religious implication is really not too pervasive at all, used as a tool for the larger, over-arching themes.Frankly, I have no choice but to overlook any possible religious connotations involving this album, because it is a work of art – a goddamned heavy metal milestone, a real genre-transcending masterpiece. It’s a very meaningful album that speaks on a larger, conceptual level about real, honest themes of guilt, burdens, the feeling of impending doom and resolution. There’s really nothing happy or condescending about it – this is a band caught in media res in the middle of a 10-song apocalypse, and suffering all the crises and consequences you would expect. Too Late to Pray is an album of epic, life-affirming, evil-fighting heavy metal that any fan needs in his or her collection now. Absolutely essential.

Album:

After their insanely proud and metal debut "Legions of the Dead" and their epic monster of an album "Too Late to Pray", Tyrant would return nine years later to release what would be their last release, their final stand against the rotten stench that was drowning metal. These times were tough, and when you look really deep into this album you can almost see a sad band realizing its nearly a hopeless loss. It doesn't paralyze the bands efforts or anything, but you can almost sadly tell after this, they would walk away never to be heard again. "King of the Kings" is the third full length album from Tyrant and it stands tall and proud against the plague.Overall, this album does have its flaws and is something that's a bit hard to get into. Its one of those albums you will most likely have to listen to a few times over before you can really appreciate it. One of my biggest complaints here is the production. Although its not exactly bad by any means, its not nearly as heavy or thick as their previous albums were. And besides the first track, Glen May's vocals sound like they're lost within a giant empty cavern. It doesn't really have that crunch they once had. There's a lot more substance here, than intensity. However, comparing it to other obscure metal release that came out during the mid 90's, its still very good. The keyboards are an improvement, and as usual they do practically nothing but signal the sounds of bells and hymns for some atmosphere. The guitars are probably the best thing on here, sound wise. Rocky Rockwell hasn't lost his touch here at all, the razor sharp guitars and his crazy rhythm's are again displayed all over. The bass sounds a bit odd at times, a bit weaker perhaps. And the drums are pretty top notch and heavy, though not nearly as thunderous as they once were on their previous releases.Glen May seems to be the figure here who gives off that sad vibe. He certainly gives off a grade A performance, but at the same time he could do so much more than this. On their first album he sounded like a proud and victorious Knight standing tall and proud for his metal. The next album is where he went berserk and mutated into a barbarian yelling and screaming his lungs off like no other. And here, he just sounds a bit empty at times. Maybe this is because of the production, or the odd songs, but overall I thought he could have done so much better. Though it might not disappoint everyone out there, I was also a little disgruntled there wasn't really any shrieking to be heard here, none in the background, and none in the main vocals. Something May was incredible at. Regardless, he still does an incredible job and its not like he 'didn't want to be here' or anything. The album seems to start off promising, though the intro song Tyrant's Revelation III could easily be cut a little shorter. Not to mention the next song King of Kings even has an extended intro itself, but its one of the better tracks on here. The self-titled track does the perfect job in retaining their epic feel with the incredible guitar rhythm's, the keyboards hymning in the background, and May gives off his best performance on this track. Then it falls apart for the next few tracks. Fast Lane, although not a bad track, just look at the title. It feels completely out of place and kind of ruins the moment. Dance with the Devil continues this somewhat boring and simplistic style and is another barely passable track. Ancient Fire makes you think they've got another Legions of the Dead or Valley of Death worked up, but no. This track is too long for its own good, and really doesn't ... do anything. Nowhere to Run is where things seem to pick up again. Although it still has a pretty simplistic feel and structure, at least their aggression is back! Its a much tougher song than the last few. When Night Falls is a slower and darker track with a strikingly hard pace with the drums. Still, it seems like they could have done a little more with this song. Tighten The Vice has some awesome guitar distortions and shredding starting it off, and comes out like the proud Tyrant that exploded in their earlier years. Coast to Coast is extremely unique and a very powerful song, and much slower than the rest. Though it sounds like something you'd never hear from Tyrant. Half of this song has Rocky Rockwell displaying his acoustic skills, layered with some electric guitars in the later half of the track. May himself gives off an incredible performance and almost sounds like a completely different person, his emotions all seem to explode unto this song. Truly an amazing track that gives off a very touching and emotional feel. The final track War takes things to an explosive level as if all their anger built up throughout this album and was all unleashed on this final song. Easily one of the best songs on here, also the fastest and heaviest. More songs like this would have been incredible to hear. Its a shame this war was lost. So, although it seems like I'd give this album a lower rating, I'm still giving it a B grade. Because its still a really solid album. Although a few tracks are utterly forgettable, the self-titled track and the last half of the album are definitely powerful songs. Its not the unstoppable Tyrant that released "Legions of the Dead" or "Too Late to Pray", but compared to most of the other crap out there that was coming out during these tough times (for what metal was even still alive) they really made their last stand here. A little more polishing on the production and other things would have been good, and definitely some retooling on some of the songs needed to be done. If you want to get into Tyrant this may not be the best place to start. But in the end for those looking for something unique, innovative, and original this album is definitely something to check out. And for the fans of Tyrant who haven't heard this yet, its definitely worthwhile.

Album:

TYRANT is a 4-Piece Traditional Heavy Metal band from Pasadena, California. The band was reactivated back in 2009 with only two original members, Greg May and Rocky Rockwell. This is actually their first album since coming back and also the first since 1996’s ‘’King of Kings’’. I heard about them back in the late nineties/early 2000’s as they were doing a lot of covers for Dwell Records compilation including one about JUDAS PRIEST. I was really impressed by their ‘’Tyrant’’ cover back in the day and it’s never easy covering the ultimate masters nonetheless. They have in their ranks probably one of the most underrated Metal vocalists of the last twenty-five years, the incomparable Robert Lowe. For people who don’t know, he has fronted the SOLITUDE AETURNUS as well as CANDLEMASS. In the Epic Doom Metal genre, he is considered as of the very best vocalists out there. He joined the ranks of TYRANT back in 2017.I honestly thought it would be a more fast paced album but it’s along the lines of traditional Doom Metal. I was expecting more to be perfectly honest yet it’s always fun to get surprised when you first listen to an album. I do feel Robert Lowe’s voice has lost a lot of its vigor and energy, especially if you compare it to his last two albums with CANDLEMASS. Back then they were clear, powerful and deep and on this opus, I felt he mailed it in. Halfway through the album I was pretty much bored to be perfectly honest. For all intents and purposes, you don’t have much fresh material to sink your teeth in. What made CANDLEMASS truly great was drawing from the pioneers and turning it to something rather consistent. You had progressive variations and unconventional tactics, yet that mysticism and aura about the songs themselves. In TYRANT, it felt drawn out and the songs were way too long. They tried to replicate the tried and true Early Doom Metal yet they failed. The energy is not there and Robert Lowe just doesn’t seem interested. His vocals lack that character he was know for and as for the rest of the band, they are capable musicians. I felt uninspired when listening to this album and it’s stuff I have heard countless times and it’s just not memorable. You listen to the album once and you forget about, this was a big disappointment and after 24 years, they could have done far better honestly.
