Bio:

Satan would change their name to Blind Fury after the release of their debut ''Court In The Act''. The former singer Brian Ross was replaced by Lou Taylor who was in Satan once before and himself was also, ironically, replaced by Brian Ross. After they released ''Out Of Reach'' they changed their name back to Satan and Michael Jackson joined on vocals. In 1988, they changed their name again, this time to The Kindred and then to Pariah. They recorded two more albums and then quit, with a reformed version of Pariah releasing a third album in 1997.Satan reuinted for a series of shows in 2004, and then again permanently in 2011.With regards to the band's name, Steve Ramsey said in a 2013 interview: "The judge was always part of it, the judge and the the devil. That’s the basic theme of the whole band, you know. Satan isn’t occult or anything like that, the whole idea of the band is injustice. It’s all about injustice."

Album:

Court In The Act seems to have gained a bit of a cult following, especially since the band reformed and have garnered many positive reviews for their latest output. I am very happy for their recent resurgence, but I'm at a loss as to how they never made the big leagues back in the day seeing as this record is close to being perfect in every way. Consider that Court In The Act was released the same year as "Kill Em All", "Piece Of Mind" and "Show No Mercy" and somehow is not revered in the same way as these other classic records. I would go as far as to say that Satan's debut offering is superior to the the three aforementioned debut platters. Sure, it's not as influential and might not have been if it had been correctly promoted but the songwriting, technical prowess, heaviness and overall vibe are undeniably jaw-dropping.One listen will easily hammer my point home, as the twin guitar attack of Tippins and Ramsey is stellar. Their precision playing and intertwined harmonies are what truly elevates this record to the status of "classic" and "must own". Every solo on every song is bursting with urgency and leaves a lasting impression. If you've not been smiling in utter joy and admiration of the guitar work then Brian Ross's vocals will surely do the trick. I admit, at first that he sounds slightly flat and one dimensional but his tone does fit perfectly and his high notes more than make up for it. (The fact that Brian can still hit all the highs to this day, seeing as he's knocking on the door to 60 is almost unbelievable.) Unsurprising that bass and drums are tight and flawless, though I won't go into detail when it comes to these instruments as I'm not too savvy compared with my knowledge of six strings and the backs of men's throats.Every song's a winner, absolutely no filler and the record is the perfect running time. The artwork does seem a bit goofy by today's standards but I really do like it. It looks creepy enough. The only negative issue I have which has prevented me from giving a perfect score is the production. I've heard a few different releases of this and it seems to be an almost quiet mix, thus meaning stereo volume is whacked right up and you can't make out much in the way of bass. Satan are back in business and some may say their newest releases top this one. Time will tell, but make no mistake they will remain the uncrowned kings of the NWOBHM movement and one of the best bands I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Album:

SATAN is a true heavy metal classic. Hailing from Newcastle UK, these young boys started their gig circa 1979, as part of the NWOBHM movement, and were since listed as influences on such metal giants as METALLICA, DEATH ANGEL and EXODUS. This live album that I am about to review for you has several interesting facts. After their last album, “Life Sentence”, which was their first recording in 28 years, after playing a reunion show in 2011, the Satanic boys have played 6 shows in 6 days in 6 states for the recording of this live album! Now that's what I call following your image! So on to the live album…The first song, “Trial By Fire” sounds almost exactly like it did on the recording, just with even more energy, as if around 30 years since have not passed.Same thing could be said about the second track “Blades Of Steel”, it sounds even better live than recorded, everything is tighter, the 30 years of musical and technical evolution of the band members have done wonders, one of the rare cases that the live sounds better than the studio recording!Wow these guys don't skip a beat! Even if it's about new songs such as the next track, “Time To Die”, sounds perfect, full of energy, as good if not better than the studio version, SATAN proves here with this album that they are a huge live band!Throughout the whole album, the guys from SATAN do not let the past years show or influence how they now sound, everything sounds perfect, the sound of the live performance is awesome, the energy can be felt in the air, and the only thing I can say that I wish that I could see them live someday, because on this album they prove that age does not matter as long as you still have your passion for music!

Album:

British heavy metal veterans SATAN will release their new studio album, "Atom By Atom", in October via Listenable Records. The follow-up to 2013's "Life Sentence" was recorded at Newcastle's First Avenue Studios and was once again mixed and mastered by Dario Mollo in Italy. The cover artwork was created by artist Eliran Kantor, who has previously worked with TESTAMENT, ICED EARTH, SODOM and SOULFLY, among others. The CD features ten songs, including a collaboration with ANGEL WITCH's Kevin Heybourne.SATAN guitarist Steve Ramsey stated about "Atom By Atom": "We wanted to keep some continuity going with both the look and sound of this album."We've been working on the music for nearly two years now and I think people will definitely hear a progression from 'Life Sentence'. I can't really describe it, but I promise you, these songs will speak for themselves."SATAN released a live album, "Trail Of Fire - Live In North America", in October 2014 to celebrate its debut live appearances last year on the North American soil in support of "Life Sentence".Originating from Newcastle, England in 1980, SATAN is known as part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Though generally obscure throughout their career, the band is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s, influencing major acts like METALLICA, EXODUS and DEATH ANGEL."Life Sentence" was released on April 29, 2013 in Europe and May 21, 2013 in the U.S. via Listenable Records. The CD was the culmination of a process that began when the original "Court In The Act" lineup got together for an exclusive "one-off" reunion show at Germany's Keep It True festival in 2011 in what marked their first performance together in 28 years.SATAN is one of the most important groups that emerged in the early NWOBHM era. Their unique mixture of heavy and power metal spirit with thrash riffage brought a handful of unforgettable tunes and revolutionized heavy music as we know it."Court in the Act" was SATAN's debut release and was considered a true milestone at the time of its release (1983). The songs were melodic, but at the same time very aggressive. The band's two guitarists, Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey, delivered a truly amazing performance; although their styles were completely different, they managed to perfectly complement each other's playing and introduced a handful of timeless riffs and solos.

In 1988, the group changed its name to Pariah, releasing two albums under that name before folding in the early 90s. In 1998, Pariah released another album. The band's shifting line-up has included members of many other heavy metal bands such as Blitzkrieg, Atomkraft, Avenger, Persian Risk, Cronos and Battleaxe. In 1990, Steve Ramsey (guitar) and Graeme English (bass) together with singer Martin Walkyier of UK thrash metal band Sabbat founded folk metal band Skyclad.Satan would change their name to Blind Fury after the release of their debut ''Court In The Act''. That’s the basic theme of the whole band, you know. Satan isn’t occult or anything like that, the whole idea of the band is injustice. It’s all about injustice."

Album:

Following their 2011 reunion, Satan proved their mettle (and their metal) with 2013’s Life sentence and 2015’s equally well-received Atom by Atom. With original six-stringers Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins firmly in place, alongside Brian Ross (vocals), and long-standing members Sean Taylor (drums) and Graeme English (bass), Satan are now signed to respected label Metal Blade for Cruel Magic, a ten-track summation of their strengths clad in typically evocative artwork.Certainly cruel magic is far from an exercise in reliving past glories. As the grand opener, into the mouth of eternity strides majestically into view, we get just a moment to capture a glimpse of the regal entourage before everything explodes as Steve and Russ peal out riff after riff over Graeme’s pounding bass. If you don’t feel the adrenalin immediately start to flow, you may well be clinically dead, especially when Brian’s prog-tinged vocals are introduced, the result being a glorious hybrid of classic heavy metal, progressive elements and modern metal production tropes. Everything from the tightly knit harmonies to the explosive riffs are rendered with searing clarity and the band themselves are on the form of their lives, playing for their very souls as Sean drives them ever closer to the gates of hell with his devastating performance. Next up, the title track shows that the opening blast was no fluke, the riffs weaving nimbly around the bass as Brian once again delivers a vocal performance that will leave most newcomers gasping in his wake. With shades of Deep purple and Priest, cruel magic distils the essence of heavy metal into five glorious minutes, only to find itself eclipsed by the dizzying speed and addictive melodies of The doomsday clock, an unstoppable rampage that somehow pales in comparison to Legions hellbound, a track that teaches the youngsters how it’s done with its fiery riffs and a series of whiplash solos that will have the audience banging their head to a concussion. In contrast, Ophidia takes things down a notch as the band engage with a mid-tempo beast that has a powerful groove in place of the battering-ram riffs employed elsewhere. Once again it’s Brian Ross who shines here, his vocals given greater weight in the mix thanks to the more restrained approach of the guitars, although that’s not to say there isn’t some exquisite lead work for fans to get their teeth into. Ophidia brings the first half of the album to a perfect close with adrenalin levels still very much in the red.Raising the curtain on the album’s second half, Sean Taylor lays down a merciless beat on My prophetic soul, a glorious melee of hard riffing and soaring vocals. The pace remains furious as the band surge forth into death knell for a king, an anthemic beast of a track that is sure to become a live favourite. The band take a deeper turn into prog pastures with the bardic who among us, although, as one might expect, a hefty riff is never far away. A mid-paced groove machine, ghosts of Monongah is another track destined to give head bangers a tough time. Whether it be electrifying solos, the metronomic beat or the soaring vocals, it’s an intoxicating brew that Satan offer. It leaves only the prog-infused epic of Mortality to see the album out on a high, seemingly in spite of the exceptional quality found elsewhere. With its oh-so-familiar artwork, Cruel Magic sees Satan outpacing their own impressive legacy to deliver an album that is packed, wall-to-wall, with heavy metal anthems of exceptional power and precision. The crystal clear production, the stunning performances, the consistently strong song-writing all leads to the inevitable conclusion that Satan have come up with trumps with on an album destined to be revered as a classic in years to come. If you love metal, then you need this album in your life, it’s that simple – a masterpiece.

Album:

SATAN from UK where part of the first half of the ’80s NWOBHM movement, and their music was a mix of classic metal and hard rock. Seems their name and ‘occult imaginary’ weren’t enogh to get a record deal, but the band managed to cut three different demos – in 1981, 1982 and 1986 – which were reproduced on cassette tape only, now remastered and released as “Early Rituals“.Satan don’t scare you grandma anymore, this is just a fun, entertaining slice from the effervescent British 80s Rock scene.NWOBHM took the proto-metal of Black Sabbath and mixed it with the hard rock of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, infused it with the spirit of punk and some of the progressive rock of the era, and came up with the last bridge between metal and rock before speed metal punted it out of the park.Early Rituals uncovers this era with zest.Satan, like fellow bands Tank and Blitzkrieg, operated in that odd fusion between British heavy rock (Cream, Jethro Tull, The Who) and metal where songs follow mostly a rock format and uptempo hard rock rhythms, but use heavy metal-styled riffs which emphasize phrase, especially lead-picking, over strumming and picking chords to support vocal harmony. In NWOBHM, as in most metal, the guitars lead and vocals follow, which inverts the rock format. In the 1980s Satan made three different demos 1981 / 82 / 86. The songs on each demo give the listener a broad indication of where the band was at both artistically and technically. What’s interesting about this release is that it features three different singers and three different drummers. Satan was in a constant state of flux in those early days, energy and free time were all they had.Fans of the first couple Iron Maiden albums will appreciate the fresh-voiced vocals and dual-guitar attack plus an abundance of creative riffs and grandiloquent song structures. Some excellent guitar work and fast, more percussive riffing shows how this band paved the way for the transition to more mid-Eighties metal.Cool collectors stuff.

Album:

It has been three decades of Metal since that well reserved period of time right before everything inaugurated and became intense; a surge of energy loomed, roaming across lands and continents spreading like a disease. Out of the UK, born of the NWOBHM, there were SATAN, can’t be perceived as pioneers within the NWOBHM but in time they were considered the ones that initiated what later called Speed Metal and its little brother, Thrash Metal. Fueling with their debut “Court In Act”, released in 1983, the world was in session, a new era began with a blast. Since then it has been a tumult for the English band, renamed, revamped and reburied again to be remained close under the shutters for who knows how long. In 2011, it happened, a decision to return, to show that there is something there after all these years. Two years later SATAN reached the verdict with a newfound condemnation. “Life Sentence”, via Listenable Records, consisting of the same classic lineup that recorded the debut. Now don’t rush to judgment, just listen and in the same time read.Right from my first strides through this album it seemed as if the band’s mid to late 80s periods were never there and here we are, after “Court In Act”, not three decades away, with a new album to continue a forged legacy. Not only the tremendous sound, which is practically near replica, yet a lively one, of the band’s vintage Marshall amps stuffed production of their early years, the music haven’t changed even for a bit. In order to put order in things, SATAN actually stopped producing albums after their sophomore album of 1988, “Suspended Sentence”. But with “Life Sentence”, along with the superiority of Brian Ross at the helm of the vocals once again after so many years that didn’t participate on the second album, SATAN continued “Court In Act”. So there you go, that was the long version, and me stopping myself with too much history than analysis, of what was and what is, now I will head back to the album.Listening to “Life Sentence” I was glad that SATAN’s melodic, and even somewhat complex, Metal musical perception hasn’t changed much. Frankly, it didn’t change at all. SATAN has been clinging to pins of NWOBHM, whether the harmonic twin guitar setting, a bit early MAIDEN bass work, resilient mid ranged vocals with complementary high pitch indications and the mid tempo to fast paced drumming heading the call onwards for the royalties of Speed Metal. Thus the material is both challenging with plenty of interesting intersections and passages that reeks of the UK throughout their regions. Furthermore, the songs are more or less catchy, kind of in the vein of “Court In Act”. I must concede that I found the debut album to be that distinctive unpolished diamond with a profound magic and mark that will be hard to heave easily. “Life Sentence”, braced by classic top notch fanatic self-titled track, the suitable souvenir of the band’s old antics, all hail the filth of the court, as if it was a long lost track finally found or the melodic “Incantations”, all guns blazing “Time To Die” that isn’t far from “Pull The Trigger” acting as the album’s boisterous opener, or the epic British Steel demonstration of “Twenty Twenty Five” or the wayward sons of mother earth, “Personal Demons” and “Tears Of Blood”. In a few words to put this to rest, SATAN is back with the blazes of NWOBHM. We are back at least a few years after 1983, the guitars are rolling with melodies, rhythm guitars thundering, thin sounded, yet mystic, orchestrations rumbling and a leader chanting something about justice and other obscurities. This is a highly commended band and album; I urge you dear Metalheads, no matter the age, not to miss an example of a good restoration.
