Bio:

Mad Hatter’s Den, a melodic heavy metal band from Finland formed in 2010 in Tampere, Pirkanmaa.Mad Hatter’s Den main musical influences draw from classic heavy metal, but on the band’s second album, listeners can look forward to finding many more: symphonic influences, power metal input, and even some progressive flavours. The style and sound of Mad Hatter’s Den owe to some extend also to the heavier bands of the 1980’s, but with Mad Hatter’s Den, the focus always lies in the melodies.

Album:

I guess Vorpal Nomad isn’t the only heavy metal act stopping in for a certain tea party. Finnish upstarts Mad Hatter’s Den invite us to their namesake, a place where life and death collide with their brand of occasionally odd-ball modern heavy/power metal, helmed by Taage Laiho, whose performances I absolutely adored in fellow countrymen Altaria. (What on earth happened to those guys ?Whilst I’ll admit from the starting line that I was hoping for a little more from Mad Hatter’s Den, there is some good stuff despite the album’s decidedly stodgy middle. If there’s one thing I immediately appreciated with these Finns, it has to be their upfront approach, which is particularly evident in the first half of the album. Yeah, the first few songs present an undeniably fun romp, what with the delightful rollicking guitar riffs, seventies style keyboards/organs, and Taage Laiho’s brilliant vocals. Man, I love that guy. His smooth, professional manner certainly springs up Altaria flashbacks, which are at their most noticeable in the latter half of the album. The band’s strength lies in shorter, up-tempo numbers, and when they deviate from this approach, proceedings can go a little awry. The middle of the album is without a doubt a little hard to digest, as the band opts for some longer songs that really aren’t all that necessary. I’ll admit “Journey” has some cool Rush-isms going for it, which is kind of odd – although appreciated – but “Sinister Monologue” leaves me yearning for my pillow. It’s a shame, because what comes before – and maybe more importantly what comes after – is a whole load of fun. Granted these middle numbers do try something different and not exactly typical of the genre; but when something doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.Fortunately, the latter half of the album takes us back to the roaring ruckus that the album ignited with in the first place, and it’s all smiles on this end. Riffs fly, rhythms pound, and Taage flat out nails it with his ever-endearing vocals. “Sharks Of Power” gives me those Altaria flashbacks, and boy o’ boy do I get my rocks off to its AOR-meets-power metal styling, aw yeah! I wish this kind of quality could have been maintained throughout the album; it’s nothing original or new, but it’s the some of the best fun you’ll have outside of a bouncy castle party at the Playboy mansion.Despite slowing down in the middle I just can’t deny the former and latter halves of the album. It makes me happy, gets my feet tapping, and as such leaves me forgiving of any negative aspects I’ve found on Welcome To The Den. On the whole, this is a good mix of European power metal with some hard rock/AOR aspects and some straight up heavy metal tendencies. You won’t find anything amazing here, but I guarantee you’ll be smiling at numerous moments throughout the album – if not, then you probably weren’t invited to the party in the first place.

Bio:

Mad Hatter’s Den performs melodic heavy metal. Their musical style is a creative combination of many different styles and periods of metal. Mad Hatter’s Den’s debut album Welcome to the Den, released in the fall of 2013, is available as CD and LP in a number of record stores, as well as in most streaming music services. Click to read some of the album’s reviews.Currently, Mad Hatter’s Den is at the studio finalizing their next album, on which the band will further develop their style. In addition to influences heard on Welcome to the Den, the new album’s inspirations draw from symphonic and progressive metal, just to mention a few.

Album:

I've had the pleasure of following Mad Hatter's Den's musical career from their first EP in 2012, Dark Wheel through their first long player, 2013's Welcome To The Den. Now the band is back with Excelsior, and a few changes. Arto Pitkanen has been the new drummer since 2013, and new bass player Jarno Vitri also takes over vocals from Taage Laiho. There may be some other things you might notice about Mad Hatter's Den and this new album. They continue to play melodic heavy metal with a strong twin guitar presence embellished by copious amounts of synths. But they've added more breadth and depth to their sound by bumping up the symphonic element, adding more power metal thunder, and dropping in some prog metal nuances. Frankly, I like the band's direction. It's shows maturity in musicianship and song composition. In to the songs, and those promising elements, allow me to mention a few. For that thunder, speed, and gallop of power metal Through The Unknown is likely the best example. It roars along from start to finish, pedal to the metal, riffs, bass, and drums blazing. Blending the same with masterful melodic metal, Hero's End proves the band's ability to vary tempos, but also declare that twin guitar harmony rules. They song may remind you of Blind Guardian. For the progressive metal nuances, Break The Chains offers a notable juxtaposition between heavy riffs in the first half that give way to a gentler turn, something more smooth after the midpoint.Songs with more of the aforementioned symphonic notes come with, by example, The Aftermath and Not Of This World. I've always liked the use of synths in the Mad Hatter's Den sound. In Birds Of Prey, they make the band and the song sound like what early Kansas might have sounded like if they warped 30 years into the future and became a power metal band. Another song of interest is Masters Of Hate which can only be described as melodic heavy metal in an AOR wrapper. It has a great rock groove, catchy melody, nice choral vocal arrangement, and the bass and drum lines are quite present. Finally, you get a heavy metal anthem with Guardian Angel, a song that begins with voice and piano, before building to a larger, quick paced, finale with a soaring guitar solo.So those are just the highlights, the songs that got my attention. But it's enough to say that there is not bad song here. It's all killer, and no filler. Perhaps the album could have been trimmed in length, or not. Bottom line is Excelsior is Mad Hatter's Den's best album to date, and probably the album by which all other albums will be judged. Easily recommended.
