Debut full-length album.The band started as a tribute to Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. As time passed, the two musicians began to work remotely on original ideas and riffs. Aurelio mainly deals with the music while Alberto writes a concept centered on the figure of a tormented serial killer, oppressed by the souls of his own victims and redeemed by the ghost of a little girl.Their chosen name makes it clear, The Headless Ghost were born in the spirit of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. And their debut 'King Of Pain' often echoes that kind of sound, dark and horrific in atmosphere. But they are not a tribute band, far from it. Musically, the band from Lombardy looks to a heavy metal with a classical matrix, more oriented towards the nineties than the mandatory eighties. The eight tracks that make up the album are well-structured and varied in their atmospheres, with a prevalence of dark tones, diluted at times by the melodies drawn by the guitars of Aurelio Parise (Lionsoul) and Alberto Biffi (yes, the same Alberto Biffi that you have read so many times on these pages in the past), the original creators of the band and the lyrical concept that animates 'King Of Pain'. Mindful of the aforementioned reference points, the record opens with a sinister nursery rhyme, which soon turns into the compact title-track, a square and powerful track with some interesting changes of pace. Decidedly more direct, 'Inside The Walls' is the first potential hit of the record, with its tight rhythms combined with melodic lines that are really effective in their relative immediacy of the German school. 'Whispers In The Dark' also runs fast, while presenting darker atmospheres. The work of the two guitars is generally pleasing,capable of combining powerful riffs - at times reminiscent of Iced Earth - with melodic and effective solo phrasing, as in the cadenced 'Angel In Flames' with its moderate modern inflections. The rhythms are powerful and varied, reminiscent of Atheist and Control Denied, but are effectively combined with guitar lines that tend towards the traditional. Even Ste Vallino's voice, rough and recognisable, is far removed from the more classic metal clichés. It works well, and knows how to characterise tracks like 'Hellhouse' and the concluding 'Liberation', which effectively combine compact riffs and choice of melodic lines that are not obvious but convincing. This is the potential key to reading 'King Of Pain', a record that looks to the classic sounds of heavy metal, the more traditional but also the more obscure ones, but tries to personalise them, without merely quoting them. And in this, The Headless Ghost's performance is certainly good and shows a desire to find their own way.Recommended: for those who love heavy metal but do not disdain dark atmospheres and sometimes more extreme sounds.
