Bio:

Pretty Maids are a Danish hard rock/heavy metal band from Horsens, Denmark. Formed in 1981 by Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer, their sound and music can be described as classic guitar-laden heavy rock with a strong emphasis on melodic elements like vocals and keyboards.Over the years, Pretty Maids have sold hundreds of thousands of records, but have never broken through in a major way, except in Japan during the 1990s. They have supported well known bands as Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and Saxon, and were also featured at the 1987 German version of Monsters of Rock, where Metallica headlined along with Deep Purple. After a prolonged international touring hiatus before the release of the 2006 Wake Up To The Real World album, the band have every year since been touring their primary markets of Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Spain. In March 2014, Pretty Maids are going to release their 13th studio album Louder Than Ever.

Album:

Jump the Gun is the third studio album by the Danish hard rock/heavy metal band Pretty Maids. It was released on 20 April 1990 in Europe by CBS. In the US, the title was changed to Lethal Heroes and it was released by Epic Records. The album was produced by Deep Purple's bass guitarist Roger Glover. According to CBS, it was then the most expensive album recording to date in Denmark, with a cost of around DKK 3–3.5 million.Jump the Gun was nominated for Danish Heavy Rock Album of the Year at the 1991 Danish Grammy Awards, but lost to Skagarack's A Slice of Heaven.Due to the underwhelming commercial performance of Jump the Gun, three members left the band by late 1990 leaving only the lead singer Ronnie Atkins and the guitarist Ken Hammer. The band has said on numerous occasions that the decision to hire Glover as the album's producer was a mistake and led to its over-produced sound. In 2014, Atkins called the album his least favourite."Hang Tough" is a song that was written and recorded for Icon's Night of the Crime album but was not included in the final release. Icon's version is only available on the 1984: Live Bootleg CD and DVD.

Album:

Sin-Decade is the fourth studio album by the Danish hard rock/heavy metal band Pretty Maids. It was produced by Flemming Rasmussen and Pretty Maids, and released in 1992 by Columbia Records. After the relative commercial failure of the band's previous album, Jump the Gun (1990), the bass guitarist Allan Delong, the keyboard player Alan Owen and the drummer Phil More left the group by late 1990, leaving only the singer Ronnie Atkins and the guitarist Ken Hammer. The two remaining members began writing songs for a new album, this time with "full creative control" according to Atkins. Due to the tumultuous situation around the band, Atkins and Hammer wrote "aggressive and heavy" songs. According to Atkins, the band decided to work with the Danish producer Flemming Rasmussen to avoid the "over-produced" sound of Jump the Gun.To complete the band's line-up, Atkins and Hammer recruited drummer Michael Fast and bass guitar player Kenn Jackson. The album includes the single "Please Don't Leave Me" (a cover version of the Thin Lizzy song) which has become Pretty Maids' signature song. It was later re-recorded in an acoustic version for the band's fifth studio album, Stripped (1993).

Album:

Scream is the fifth studio album by Danish hard rock/heavy metal band Pretty Maids. The album was released in Japan on October 13, 1994, and in Denmark on January 23, 1995 by Epic Records.Pretty Maids' Scream, released in 1995, was their best album in 8 years (since the astonishing masterpiece, Future World, from 1987). They're back in top shape with a heavy metal album with some really cool tunes. The first 3 songs on the disc (Rise, Scream, Psycho-Time...) makes you headbang your way through the first 12 minutes in absolute heavy metal delight. Fourth track is called This Love, and despite being a love song, it's a cool hard rock song where things never really slow down. Walk Away is the first ballad of the disc and it's got one of them really catchy choruses that the maids are experts in writing. No Messiah is a heavy midpaced track. The lyrics are kinda cool and overall this song is one of the best off Scream In a World Of Your Own is the second ballad and here things really slow down. It starts with a small piano piece before the band sets in. It's actually an okay song but adds nothing really special to the maids' impressive catalogue of songs. The next 2 songs (Don't Turn Your Sex On Me, Adrenaline Junkie) are dead heavy and really screams HEADBANGING! The lyrics are clever and the riffs just scream their way into your skull! Very cool!!!The last song of the disc is Anytime Anywhere which is also a ballad. It's a little similar to In a World... and it obviously suffers from that... but on it's own, it's an okay song... but a little sad they put 2 songs that alike on the same album... but that's actually one of the only bad things I can say about this album.Musicwise, as aforementioned, the album is heavy metal most of the way. It's actually a little surprising that they almost don't use the keyboard at all because you're used to keyboards in PM's music, so it actually makes the album a little harder (which isn't a bad thing). On the other hand, it wasn't as succesful in Japan as some of PM's other releases... simply because the japanese people missed the keyboard sound.A classic in PM's discography which you shouldn't be missing out on.

Line Up:

Ronnie Atkins – songwriting, arrangement vocals
Ken Hammer – songwriting, arrangement, guitar
Michael Fast – drums
Kenn Jackson – bass guitar
Alan Owen – keyboards
Dominic Gale – piano

Flemming Rasmussen – producer, engineer, mixer
Henrik Vindeby – engineer
Knud Lindhard – engineer, additional backing vocals

Tracklist:

04. This Love (4:40)
05. Walk Away (4:54)

08. Don't Turn Your Sex On Me (3:57)

Album:

As part two of my Pretty Maids extravaganza week I am reviewing the overlooked, yet killer album Spooked. Whereas the new live album Alive at Least is mainly for the fans, Spooked is one of Pretty Maids' finest moments. For years fans were asking for the sequel to Future World and this is as close as they got. Even though I love each and every single album these Danes have done, Spooked is where the band just seemed to hit the head on the nail on every single song and the result is some of the best melodic rock I have heard with every song having a catchy, majestic melody, passionate vocals, heavy yet crystal clear melodic guitars and drums that were made to bang your head to.After the obligatory intro track, Freakshow comes screaming out with a heavy as hell riff that makes you proud to be metal. A relatively fast song, Freakshow is an ideal opener and sets the mood for the entire cd. After Dead or Alive, another fast one, comes the midtempo, driving Die With Your Dreams. It's a little different from most of the other songs in their extensive catalog as it is quite a bit darker sounding than the standard Pretty Maids song, almost brooding in a way. The first huge smash comes later though with Live Until it Hurts, an upbeat anthem like song about living for the now and enjoying life to the fullest. With an intro that recalls Love Games this is just a pure, fun, singalong song that Pretty Maids do best. The hard edge returns with the title track which is another fast heavy number. A vicious song, Spooked is dreadfully heavy and quite angry lyrically. Some good solos and a maudlin midsection make this song a standout. After another fast one and a ballad we get another midtempo brilliant song in the form of Never Too Late. What stands out here is the harmonized vocals, especially in the break section about halfway through where Ronnie Atkins voice is layered several times, each with a different tone and it just sounds mind boggling. Every time I play that passage I always end up rewinding at least two or three times just to hear Ronnie sing "And through the misty eyes of memory / do you remember how it used to be / do you recall all the good times baby". At this point in the album you will probably have noticed the keyboards, although not overpowering they are used quite alot by this band and I consider them a major part of the magic that is Pretty Maids, without them the songs would be quite lacking. The European version of Spooked ends with three more songs, including a cover of Kiss's Hard Luck Woman, which kills the original in my opinion, but the Japanese version has three more bonus tracks, one of which is one of the most godly songs that the band has ever written. Most Japanese bonus songs are usually decent but nothing to lose sleep over, although recently there have been several albums put out where the bonus song is the best one on the cd. Anyways, A Love and a Fiction is simply brilliant in every stretch of the imagination. It has hooks galore, a simple and easy to sing along to verses and a guitar line that is instantly identifiable. I implore the band to re-record A Love and a Fiction for their 2004 album simply because every Pretty Maids fan needs to be exposed to this monster of a song, its not fair that it was only released as a bonus track or on the LTD shaped cd a couple of years ago. As for the other two bonus songs, like I said about most Jap tracks, they aren't anything to lose sleep over. For me, Spooked is one of those albums that bands are lucky to have once in their career. For Pretty Maids this was their third album of their lives and long time fans couldn't agree more. If you have never heard them before this is the perfect album to start with. I implore younger fans to give Pretty Maids a listen, they are one of the most talented bands out there but have nowhere near the recognition they deserve. Like the heading to the review states, this is Melodic Hard Rock Supremacy.

Album:

First 6 songs of this album are the one of their first LP, plus they added stuff that was originally printed only for Japan. They added also three live songs (really cool songs actually). You will have the opportunity, for the ones who still don't know Pretty Maids, to ear the sound of the 80's. But most importantly, you will discover that some bands of the actual "True Metal" wave are far beyond Pretty Maids. One of the best Scandinavian bands ever. If they could only stop experiencing new thing each time. After all, our dream (fans) is very simple : give us a second "Red, hot and heavy" or "Future World" as soon as possible. That's all we are asking. There are CDs that are urgently needed, no question. The re-release of the PRETTY MAIDS debut EP - released in 1983 by the unspeakable British Indie Bullet Records - was overdue. Almost without exception, the really big bands in music history have already played their talents on their debut as young, up and coming musicians - regardless of whether they are called Maiden, Leppard, Raven, Metallica or Metal Church. Undoubtedly the PRETTY MAIDS belong to this category. Without the Melody Firecracker like 'Fantasy' or the legendary 'Children Of Tomorrow', the Danish drawer in your collection is definitely incomplete. This gap would therefore be closed. Divide number two for die-hard fans (to match the horrible Christmas bustle of the labels): the two tracks of the 1990 Christmas EP "In Santa's Claws". Who - in contrast to the atheist bunch in the Rock Hard Office - actually grafted candles on pine cones for Christmas, should not miss the title track and the co-sung by Purple-Fronter Ian Gillan 'Merry Jingle'. Do you have to try it out loud at the family's get-together? Even the great-grandma with his metal fist straightened around the tinsel spruce until the doctor arrives. Jaha! 100 percent PRETTY MAIDS, who make great connections between the two albums of the Savatage Side Project TSO and the notorious "X-Mas Metal Massacre". Like, you do not know Sabina Classen's Röchel-Growl-Version of 'Quiet trickling of the snow' yet? Or Rage-Peavy's hyperspeed fistula variant of 'Once we're still awake'? But then quickly to the next second hand shop! Is still out nationwide, the stuff. Jüp! Where was I? Oh yes: The Maids sampler is rounded off by three numbers of the godlike '95s double live album' Screamin 'Live "and the Slade cover' Far Far Away ', by copyshop artists Ken, Ronnie & Co. KG used to be princely. And since we have been allowed to put grades under republications since Götzl's censorship reform, there's a hefty eight-toed five at this point despite the somewhat crude compilation for "First Cuts ... And Then Some". Happy Holiday!

Album:

Danish legends PRETTY MAIDS never achieved the success they rightfully deserve. They have been releasing amazing material since their inception in 1981. Their catalog is incredibly consistent and jaw dropping. Their records “Red Hot and Heavy”, “Future World” and 2010s “Pandemonium” ranks up there with some of the best material of the last 30 years in Rock and Metal. Their latest record “Motherland”, released through Italy’s Frontiers Records is another heavy melodic masterpiece.2010s release “Pandemonium” was such an amazing record that the thought of following it up was a concern not only for the band but fans and critics alike. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief as they have done it again as “Motherland” captures PRETTY MAIDS at their best. Like all PRETTY MAIDS releases the songwriting is outstanding and every song is remarkably strong.Ronnie Atkins is an amazing soulful singer who seems to get better with age. His unique blend of melody and raspiness is unmatched and his voice is one of a kind. Founding guitarist Ken Hammer blends acrobatic guitar playing with a sense of melody that fits his songs brilliantly and is another unsung hero that can play with precision and emotion.Jacob Hansen’s production is crisp and jumps off the speakers. Returning to work with the band after the success of 2010s “Pandemonium” shows the partnership still is the perfect pairing. The mix is layered, separated and Hansen is quickly becoming the go to producer in Rock and Metal.First single “Mother of All Lies”, “Why So Serious?” and the title track show the band perfecting their heavier side. The title track is an up-tempo pounder that grooves, crushes and the chorus is pure perfection. The keyboards incorporate a subtle arpeggio sequence that backs Atkins as he sings a melody that is infectious. “Why So Serious?” is a haunting captivating chugger that blends melody with syncopated riffing, the biggest headbanger on the record. While “Sad to See You Suffer”, “Bullet For You” and the excellent “Wasted” is the perfect counterbalance and shows off their melodic essence. “Bullet For You” showcases a tender Atkins at his best. The harmonies are luscious and fill out the vocals beautifully. “Wasted” closes the record and does an excellent job of blending Morten Sandager’s keyboard playing into the songwriting. Again, the melodies dominate and paint the perfect landscape. All of these songs have amazing choruses that will stick in your head long after the record is over. Ever since their cover of John Sykes “Please Don’t Leave Me”; Pretty Maids are destined to play the rock ballad. They nail it.30 years into their career, “Motherland” finds PRETTY MAIDS unbelievably at their creative peak. Not too many bands are writing some of their strongest material thirteen albums into their career. Surprisingly on par with the fantastic “Pandemonium”, it is time for PRETTY MAIDS to be catapulted into the spotlight and be rewarded for their remarkable career. Let's hope that they have another thirteen albums left in them to compose because they have found their creative groove. “Motherland” contains all of the attributes that make PRETTY MAIDS outstanding. I can only hope that now is the time for them to launch a proper North American tour.

Album:

"Face The World", the new single and video from Danish hard rock veterans PRETTY MAIDS, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band's upcoming album, "Kingmaker", which will be released on November 4 via Frontiers Music Srl.PRETTY MAIDS' last release was 2014's "Louder Than Ever", a collection of new songs and re-recorded tracks from the band's past albums. The CD included eight re-recorded classic songs from the 1995-2006 era, plus four brand new songs specially written for this record and a special bonus DVD including archive footage from the '80s and brand new interviews.Regarding the PRETTY MAIDS lyric-writing process, frontman Ronnie Atkins told Myglobalmind in a 2013 interview: "Well, it's often that the atmosphere of the song sort decides which direction the lyrics will take. I'd always preferred to write about something that most people could relate to, not being political in trying to take people in any direction or inspire them to. But there's so much shit going on in this world that there's plenty to write about. But let me state I'm no, and don't pretend to be some sort of, Dylan or Lennon! [Laughs] After all, we've always seen ourselves and what we do as merely entertainment and not pretending to be highly intellectual."

Album:

Red, Hot and Heavy is the first studio album by the Danish hard rock/heavy metal band Pretty Maids. The album was released in 1984 by CBS Records. The song "Night Danger" was used in the soundtrack for the horror film Demons (1985) by Lamberto Bava. In 2005, Red, Hot and Heavy was ranked number 437 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.I first heard Pretty Maids while driving to a concert with one of my buddies. He popped in this cd and I was amazed. At first I thought it was HammerFall, because they played Back to Back, which I learned is not a HammerFall song at all, but a Pretty Maids tune, and a damn good one at that. Most people consider Pretty Maids to be more of a melodic '80s band. In reality it is hard to place Pretty Maids. Some songs make you want to think Asia. Other songs make you think damn this is heavy metal at its best like Dokken or Accept. One of my friends is fixed on labeling them hair metal, so I guess I’ll let you pick and choose. The album opens up very dramatically with the beginning to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana – that is Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, or Empress of the World, a pretty popular piece that is used in a lot of movies. It then jumps right into the best song on this album, Back to Back. This song features a pretty fast paced tempo and if you don’t headbang to this song then you don’t love heavy metal! The rest of the album is pretty upbeat, and in ways reaching out to this void that doesn’t exist yet – I am talking about power metal that is. In songs like Battle of Pride, you can see a definite birth of the genre leading to bands such as Helloween, for example, to actually get the ball rolling. If you swear you’ve never heard this band, you probably have if you grew up in the 80s or know a lot of '80s hit, which I am sure the song Waitin’ For the Time was one. This song offers a slower tempo and a catchy chorus, the formula for a '80s hit right?! It is a good song, but after listening to the album collectively you being to wonder how it got on the album in the first place. If you love '80s metal then you should pick this up. In fact, if you like metal, hair metal, power metal, whatever…you should own this album. It definitely appeals to a wide variety of an audience. The album is packed full of solid tunes featuring great guitar riffs and solos. Some songs are really heavy while others are more melodic, but it is worth it if you love metal!

Album:

Future World is the second album by the Danish hard rock/heavy metal band Pretty Maids. The album was released by CBS in 1987. By 1990, the album had sold 300,000 copies worldwide. The album charted at number 165 on the Billboard 200 in the United States.Future World was produced by Eddie Kramer, who was fired during the recording sessions because he fell asleep at the mixing console, according to guitarist Ken Hammer. The band then finished the album with engineer Chris Isca, who was credited as co-producer on the album.Mixing duties were shared between Metallica, Rainbow and Morbid Angel producer Flemming Rasmussen, and Kevin Elson, known for producing multiplatinum albums by Journey, Mr. Big and Europe. Pretty Maids from Denmark are THE Heavy Metal reference in Scandinavia since the mid'80's. It is for sure a very great band and Future World is THE album from the band. I don't know who drew the album's artcover but it is beautiful and still up to date. OK lets forget about the pictures of Pretty Maids members on the back of the cover, lets say to the youngest of you that it was very fashion to be dresses and hair-styled like this... But hey, how many bands tried to get the same cover and to bring out the equivalent but failed??? They were and still are plenty.About the band: the two leaders are Ronnie Atkin (vocals) and Ken Hammer (guitars) you just need to take a look to their live album Screamin' Live you'll only see pictures of these two guys...But lets admit what a talent, what a songwriting and what a powerful and modulable voice. Ron's vocals can be either very soft and melodic or deep and strong and fits perfectly with Pretty Maids style and riffs. When you only listen to the intro you think this is a S.F. movie of some kind. Future World's riff is fast and melodic (I think Sepultura has taken something of it to put it in Arise...). We Came To Rock is a great mid tempo. Love Games and Long Way To Go are great AOR songs with a catchy melodies. Yellow Rain is fantastic art : the intro is very soft , then great power is delivered til the end: a classic. Loud And Proud is a good heavy one too. The riff of Rodeo could be a mixture between a Scorpions and an Europe song but in the end it's just a great Pretty Maids song. Needless In The Dark is a killer too. The last song of this masterpiece Eye Of The Storm is a ballad and a great one.

Album:

This past decade has been one of the best in the career of Pretty Maids, as it can be considered the band's second rise to power, because they've been releasing some of their best records that can sit alongside the classics like Red Hot & Heavy, Future World and Jump The Gun. They started off the 2010s with the release of the incredibly strong Pandemonium record in 2010, which helped them regain much of the attention that seemed to have disappeared during the mid 90s and 2000s. The momentum continued with the releases of Motherland in 2013 and Kingmaker in 2016, as well as Louder Than Ever in 2014, which contained re-recordings of songs from the mid 90s and 2000s (or "the forgotten period" as Ronnie Atkins called it), and four new songs written from scratch specifically for that album. The re-recorded old songs sound amazing on Louder Than Ever. The band are now ending the decade with the release of their fifteenth studio album Undress Your Madness, and it's another good one. Before we get into the review, it should also be noted that just a week ago, it was shockingly revealed that Ronnie Atkins was diagnosed with lung cancer. We all send our best wishes to Ronnie as he goes through his treatments, and hope that he pulls through and comes out of it stronger than ever. The man is one of the most underrated singers with such a unique voice. He is up there with Klaus Meine, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio in terms of some of the best singers in the world, and singers that have developed such unique voices.Going back to the album, all I can say is that if you were a fan of the last three albums, you shouldn't really expect anything different on Undress Your Madness because it's full of hooks of biblical proportions, there's a crushing guitar tone, and vocals that are compelling, melodic and vicious. There isn't a song on here that won't get your head bobbing or foot tapping. Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer make one of the strongest songwriting teams out there. They are masters at the art of creating riffs, melodies and hooks that are going to stick in your head and stay there. In terms of heavy hitters, the album is full of them, like "Undress Your Madness", "Runaway World", "If You Want Peace (Prepare For War)" and "Black Thunder", all containing huge grooves and those huge Ken Hammer riffs that hit you like a sledgehammer, and get you moving whether you want to or not. Having Jacob Hansen behind the board ever since Pandemonium is one of the other things that had a tremendous impact on the band getting a lot of their recognition and attention back. If you listen to any record that Hansen is involved with, it always has a crushing and thick guitar tone, and monstrous sounding drums.Of course, it wouldn't be a Pretty Maids album without a few ballads and more melodic rockers. Examples of the ballads include "Will You Still Kiss Me (If I See You In Heaven)" and "Strength Of A Rose". The former would be my favourite of the two. The melodic rockers include "Firesoul Fly" and "Shadowlands". The latter contains what is quite possibly the hookiest chorus on the entire album, right next to the chorus in "Runaway World". I found myself having those choruses on repeat for a while. The only flaw with the album is that I feel that "Serpentine" is missing the compelling factor to make it a fantastic opener. Don't get me wrong, it certainly has a catchy riff, but the chorus lacks that great hook that I was kind of hoping for when I first heard the track. I think the title track would've served as the better opener, because it's catchy, aggressive and compelling.Undress Your Madness is simply another great addition to Pretty Maids' winning streak of great albums ever since getting back on track with Pandemonium. Being that this the fifth overall album to be produced by Jacob Hansen, I can see them continuing to record with him on future albums. Once again, we want to send our best to Ronnie in his cancer battle and hope for the best, because we cannot lose him just yet. Godspeed, Ronnie! All of the band's shows for the remainder of this year have been postponed until further notice, but in the meantime, pick up Undress Your Madness when it drops, and be sure to crank it LOUD!

Album:

Danish melodic hard rock institution PRETTY MAIDS will release “Maid In Japan – Future World Live 30th Anniversary” on May 22, 2020. The band performs their classic ’80s album ‘Future World’ front to back on this release, along with other hits from their catalog. In 2017 Pretty Maids decided to go out and play the album in its entirety to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the original release.Recorded in Japan, “Maid In Japan – Future World Live 30th Anniversary” simply confirms that Pretty Maids are among the elite Melodic Hard Rock out there: if you don’t like live albums you better give this a proper listen. While the Maids already have a trio of official live offerings in their catalog, this is made all the more poignant by singer Ronnie Atkins’ recent battle with lung cancer. The ‘Future World’ album running order has been juggled, to present a more fluid live show and following said nine tracks, the Danes add four songs from recent outings, before finishing with “Sin-Decade”.Atkins’ skills in manipulating a crowd, as an old school frontman, are on display throughout. The keyboards are more prominent in the mix than Ken Hammer’s lone guitar, especially on “Love Games”.“Loud n’ Proud” ditches the keys, Chris Laney strapping on a guitar to rock harder. “Rodeo” is an audience sing-along favorite. The syncopated drums of the twin guitar “Needles In The Dark” adds some power to the proceedings, then there’s a killer version of “Mother Of All Lies”.One of the best rocking melodic band in the planet.
