Info:

The 1980's was an extremely busy and fertile time for heavy metal, as quite a few sub-genres first rose to prominence during this time, including thrash metal, hair metal, and power metal. And one of the unsung heroes/trailblazers for the latter style is Ruthless. Hailing from Los Angeles and responsible for two classics of the metal underground (the 1984 EP 'Metal Without Mercy' and 1986's full-length 'Discipline of Steel'), Ruthless is reloaded with a powerful new line-up, and a brand new full-length, 'They Rise,' which will be released on January 30, 2015.Comprised of members Sammy D (vocals), Kenny McGee (guitars/vocals), Dave Watson (guitars), Marc McGee (bass/vocals), and Jason Van Slyke (drums), Ruthless' reunion was not a pre-planned proposition. After the band was invited to perform at the 2009 Keep It True Festival in Germany and handed in a kick ass performance, more concerts worldwide soon followed - including bills that included such metal legends as Armored Saint, Lizzy Borden, Saxon, Accept, and Paul Di'Anno. According to McGee, "This just kinda happened. Me and Sam were just thinking of doing some recordings...not even thinking Ruthless would ever happen again. But, after our new drummer, Jason, came down, the first practice, we went, 'Wow!!!' We fit together perfectly!""I threw out some guitar riffs and Sammy started singing, and we knew we had something. In 8 months we were ready to record. It came together naturally. The great thing about now is the line-up! All 5 of us are good friends and can actually hang out together. In the old line-up, we always had a member or two that was a problem. It is so awesome to be firing on all five cylinders."And McGee is a firm believer in the new material (which was produced and engineered by Bill "Slayer, W.A.S.P., Armored Saint" Metoyer) - "I think this new album compares to the 'Metal Without Mercy' album. The opening song, 'Defender,' just kicks your ass! Second song, 'Laceration,' is very melodic/slow picking in the intro, and then kicks into a killer double harmony riff. Third song, 'They Rise,' is another favorite - heavy bass riff and guitars. It lifts you up and drops you down. Also, 'Time Waits' is a slower song with very emotional singing - Sammy tears it up on the vocals."It turns out Watson agrees wholeheartedly with McGee's assessment. "The new songs came together really easily and quickly, the flow was quite natural. Kenny and I really play off of each well as guitar players, filling the gaps and keeping things interesting. Jason was exactly what the band needed to relaunch after a short hiatus and get the record done, with power, creativity and his great knowledge of rhythm."With European festival appearances lined up for the summer and headline shows being arranged for Southern California (as well as talk of another studio set in the future), Ruthless is set to pick up exactly where they left off, warns McGee. "The one thing fans can expect is a high energy show that will crush some heads!"

Album:

Ruthless finally are releasing their first studio album after their Discipline of steel in 1986, the album under the name "They rise" will come to light the next 30th January via Pure steel records. The US power metal developed by Ruthless is well considered authentic and true heavy metal, giving gems likeMetal Without Mercy or Discipline of steel to the world, generally enjoyed by true metalheads with a good knowledge of genuine metal bands on the line of Omen, Liege lord or Jag Panzer. This new album brings lots of reminiscences from their previous albums, true straightforward US metal, this time the band developed some slightly more modern melodies here and there, also introducing that strong Teutonic drippings seen on Accept or Grave Digger, also remark the vocal qualities after so long time, now are cleaner but still aggressive, and about of the drums, now they sound cleaner and better produced than before, but not as thunderous and powerful as their 80s albums. The album start with one of the best shots, Defender, very much on the line of Steeler by Judas Priest on the riffs, the clean vocals are really good performed, Introducing mid to high pitched parts leading to a really catchy chorus, headbanging entry linked with Laceration, mid tempo bomb of true metal, the addictive main riff is leaded by a good vocal composition, ascending intensity with the pure sign of the band, combining clean and sharp vocal techniques with added excellent drum shots. The tittle track They rise, comes as a slow paced shot with epic doom metal essence, vocals offer a great theatrical interpretation full of power, the structure could remind the listener to Kiss of the death by Metal Church, equally intense and well composed as the riffs of Circle of trust arises, on the line of Jag Panzer, interesting track with a good progression and excellent harmony between vocals and riffs, not in their best of though, as the aggressive speed metal of Hang man take you to the mosh pit, the intensity here is outstanding, vocal performance is from the best of the album, sharp forceful mid high pitched style like the old times; the rhythms are also breathtaking as It changes between verses and chorus, really well structured. After this powerful demonstration its time for a slow one, the ballad Time waits, the vocal parts are really well played under the slow paced galloping bass background, linked with another headbanging mid fast bomb, Out of the ashes, very straight shot with the same strategy of fast verses and mid paced and intense chorus and remarkable guitar solo. One of the highlights of the album is the track Frustration, heralds the power of the band in a fast thunderous drumbeats, the progression is overwhelming as the intensity ascends to a very catchy chorus, linking the action to the last song, Systematic terror, mid tempo track with a really strong pattern, leading to a powerful chorus to be screamed on the gigs, in crescendo to the end with nice high pitched details.Ruthless open the gates of hell almost 30 years after their last album, with renovated energy creating an excellent album full of power and genuine US metal, obviously got some modern influences after all these years, and its not quite the same as the old times, but the truth is that They rise is riveting from start to finish, and tracks like Defender, Hang man or Frustration will delight their old fans and also will catch new metalheads that didn't know them yet, in fact I can say Ruthless forged another true metal masterpiece.

Album:

This is wicked. RUTHLESS is back with a new album after their comeback in 2015 with “They Rise”. RUTHLESS is one of the numerous metal acts that spawned during the ’80s, somehow got lost in the way, only to return in the ’00s to finish what they have started. And I’m glad they did.2015’s “They Rise” was great; a nicely balanced album full of metal tunes, but this one got beyond my expectations. RUTHLESS have managed to create a highly energized album, proving that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks, but even old dogs have a couple of aces in their sleeve. While the band maintains RUTHLESS‘ classic power/thrash/speed metal approach, it does elevate the final result one level higher with songs like the title track, “Skulls” or “Storm of Souls”, where we witness a more melodic/epic approach similar to the one introduced to “Time Waits for No One” in their previous album, which is actually pretty heavy in a more distant sentimental way. These tracks have an epic feeling and an early OMEN essence which makes them quite enjoyable. On the other hand, “Cryptic Ruins”, “Atrocities”, “In Blood”, and generally most of the songs are more straightforward; a heavy mix of IRON CROSS, PURGATORY, STEEL ASSASSIN, early OVERKILL, and of course RUTHLESS‘ trademark sound. It feels a bit weird as the band is too “classic” for thrashers, and too thrashy for classic metal fans, but fear not as their raw, unpolished sound will attract both parties.Last but not least, it’s worth mentioning that the track “Fear Never Sleeps” bears some slightly KING DIAMOND influences, a detail that makes it quite interesting. To sum it up I’d say that RUTHLESS have added another great album in their arsenal. It’s an honest, awesome attempt by veterans of the kind.

"The one thing fans can expect is a high energy show that will crush some heads!"

Album:

Ruthless have ancient roots in the metal scene but haven’t been active enough to gain much notoriety. Their Discipline of Steel debut was released way back in 1986 when a young undisciplined Steel was living for exactly the kind of US power they deliver, but tragically, our paths never crossed. Turns out they didn’t release a follow-up until 2015 and The Fallen is their fourth full-length. Led by larger-than-life frontman, Sammy DeJohn, Ruthless have polished and streamlined their original sound and approach and the listener can expect very 80s-centric classic metal fare with elements of speed and trve metal comingling with the 80s power sounds of Helstar and Jag Panzer. That puts this so deep in the wheelhouse of Steel that it goes right through the floor into the sub-basement of Steel, but there must be a reason I never heard of these cats, right? Let us proceed with all due caution to avoid a nasty fall. While Ruthless aren’t doing anything anyone could call innovative or original, they’re quite competent at reproducing the sound of 80s metal and making it stick. Their sound will feel immediate and familiar to anyone who metaled in the golden era, and comparisons to early Jag Panzer are especially apt. The speed metal urgency of the title track is a great table setter and Sammy DeJohn’s burly, leather-lunged delivery pairs well with the beefy riffs and punchy pace. Tracks like “Betrayal” show the band has chops, balls, and bombast and it’s impossible to hear this one without thinking of Nasty Savage, as DeJohn adopts a very Nasty Ronnie-esque lilt to his voice. This is fine by me and one should always strive to be more Nasty Ronnie than Unnasty Ronald. This one moved directly to the Grand Liifting List ov Steel before it was half over. Joining it is “No Mercy” which also punches above its weight with a sword-ready epic sound that delivers a machismo sandwich packed with protein and extra curly back hair. This one is surprisingly good and has been getting heavy replays in the heavy room.Other fine moments arrive with “Thulsa Doom” where the epic trve metal vibe is amplified with thicc doom riffage for a large-scale assault on your back Gondor. This one really gets under my brain skin and I love the extra heavy vibe it imparts. “Order of the Dragon” is the best Saxon song in the last few years except it runs a bit too close to “Power and the Glory” for its own good. I still dig it muchly though. There isn’t much filler here to complain about, though “Dark Passenger” is somewhat weak compared to its brethren, and the simmering power ballad “End Times” is decent with some surprisingly Dio-esque vocals from DeJohn, but it could be a bit tighter. At 41-plus minutes, The Fallen is a crisp little throwback album with more hits than misses and it keeps things fairly intense the entire time. Anthemic, aggressive, and lively, this is what the 80s sound was and is all about.Sammy DeJohn is the brains behind Ruthless and he’s resurrected the band to fulfill his metal dreams of supremacy. He’s a solid vocalist with an old school slant to his delivery, and at various times I was reminded of the aforementioned metal heroes and also Jag Panzer’s Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin and Paragon’s Andreas Babuschkin. That’s a well-round gentleman and his performance is a big part of the charm here. Aiding DeJohn in his ruthless endeavors, Glen Paul delivers a solid collection of road-grading, meat-tenderizing 80s riffs of various weights and masses. The beefy chugs and crisp speed riffs are there, and he does the trve metal thing really well too. Sandy K. Vasquez plays a competent bass and gets to shine in Steve Harris-like ways at times. The band is tight and the writing is solid and mostly convincing though definitely stuck in the mid 80s.I didn’t expect all that much from The Fallen, but I’m happily impressed by what I got and it has me going back into the past to acquire their earlier works. If you love the 80s metal sound, this will likely entertain you and earn some repeat spins. It isn’t going to change the world or draw much attention, but Ruthless can execute this select style pretty well and some of this stuff is playlist-worthy for sure. Give it a road test for old times’ sake. Stay ruthless, Sammy!
