Bio:

Fifth Angel is an American heavy metal band from Bellevue, Washington. Fifth Angel was formed in the suburbs of Seattle in 1983, specifically, in the Bellevue area. The band's initial lineup consisted of Ted Pilot (vocals), James Byrd (lead guitar), Ed Archer (rhythm guitar), Ken Mary (drums) and Kenny Kay (bass). This line up went into Steve Lawson Productions studio in late 1983 with Terry Date as producer/engineer and recorded a four song demo that consisted of "Fade to Flames", "Fifth Angel", "In the Fallout", and "Wings of Destiny". Shrapnel Records signed them in 1985 and financed the recording of five more songs to complete a self titled album that eventually appeared in 1986.Kenny Kay left the group in 1987 and was replaced by John Macko. The group was signed a major label deal with Epic Records in 1988 and the debut album was re-released. As the band prepared to record a second album they lost founding guitar player James Byrd. Kendall Bechtel was brought in as his replacement. In 1989, the follow-up record, Time Will Tell appeared, but the band had lost its label support, with its members going their separate ways by 1990.Although many rumors cropped up in the 2000s about a reunion, it finally happened in 2009. Ed Archer, John Macko and Kendall Bechtel were joined by drummer Jeffrey McCormack and in 2010, the band played its first live show in its history at the Keep it True Festival, with guest singer Peter Orullian (ex-Heir Apparent).McCormack left the group in 2011, along with announced lead singer David Fefolt (the latter performed on some demos, but never actually performed live or officially recorded with the band). The group was rumored to be demoing new material, but so far nothing had come of it.By 2017, Fifth Angel had been active once again. Original drummer Ken Mary rejoined the group, and vocalist Peter Orullian returned to sing for some 2017 engagements. The band booked two shows for the year: April 22, 2017 at El Corazon in Seattle, Washington, and the Keep it True Festival in Germany on April 29, 2017. The band also had a huge slate of demos that it planned to work on following the Keep It True Festival, in hopes of finally putting together a new record.Their third album, The Third Secret, will be released in September 2018 on Nuclear Blast.

Album:

Fifth Angel is the first studio album by the American heavy metal band Fifth Angel. It was originally released in 1986. Musically, it shows much more resemblance to modern power metal than their other USPM counterparts. After recording a four song demo in late 1983 and early 1984, which they sent to over 100 record labels, Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records signed the band and financed the recording of five additional songs and released the album in 1986. Epic Records re-released it in 1988 with new artwork. The record was produced by Fifth Angel and Terry Date. The debut. s/t, album of Fifth Angel is one of the finest examples (along with Queensryche's famous EP and with Heir Apparent's "Graceful Inheritence" LP) of the Seattle's 80s Power Metal Scene. Their music has this characteristic sound of the scene carried out in a more melodic approach and being performed excellently in technical terms.Their main song-writer is the guitar virtuoso, James Byrd. His riff-ology and melodic solos reveal he worshiped bands as UFO and MSG, but he still achieves to be original, sounding more metal than his influences. The most interesting thing about the guitars in this album is that while they are of great technical and artistic value, they do not sound repetitive boring as with most guitar virtuosos (like Malmsteen or Vai), keeping ther spontaneity, necessary for a US Power release. As a composer Byrd seems to have have been taken care of every detail of his guitar work giving his tunes synthetical depth and originality. At this point he is perfectly accompanied by the second guitarist Ed Artcher as well as the drummer, Ken Mary (also worked in Chastain and Accept). Moreover Ted Pilot[vocals] contributes the most in this release using the whole attributes of his voice and not only trying to go as high-pitched as he can, like most of the US Power Metal vocalists, making the final result unique. Finally the production is crystal clear, allowing the listener to grasp the whole of this musical masterpiece. The album opens with In the Fallout, a catchy-as-hell, fast tune that will make the band's quality obvious from the first second. Shout it Out and Call Out The Warning reveal the musical intelligence of Ted Pilot, the charismatic voice of whom makes the utter result a real masterpiece. Next comes Fifth Angel, probably the best song in the album. Epic feeling at its outmost, in this mid-tempo tune that its guitar work slowly builds the atmosphere up to climax in the last chorus. Wings of Destiny continues with the same style as Fifth Angel, starting only with acoustic guitars and voice for a minute until finally the electric guitar and drums join in. The Night is a more fast and straight-forward song. Drums are setting the tempo up and Byrd gives us the best riff of the album while Pilot spits out the lyrics. In Only the Strong Survive can be described as the more mediocre moment of the album (if some can be found), but still its depth makes it far from typical or boring. Moreover here Byrd gives us his best guitar solo of the album. Cry Out the Fools is another brilliant moment. In similar style with Fifth Angel but less epic, more ballad-like with an excellent solo and the vocals of Pilot in its finest moment. Its lyrical content is also of great artistic value. Last but not least, Fade to Flames seems the perfect closing for a great record. Epic feeling is still present while is Pilot screaming out the lyrics. All in all here we have to do with a unique album. Maybe the hardcore fans of US Power will be dissapointed, in the beginning with its more melodic approach, but after some few auditions the album will reveal its musical quality. Moreover it will sound interesting even to more Euro Power, Progressive Metal or Hard Rock fans due to its masterful guitar and vocal work and its synthetic depth. A real masterpiece. Buy or die!

Album:

Time Will Tell is the second album by heavy metal band Fifth Angel, released in 1989. It was produced by Terry Brown, and was Fifth Angel's last full-length studio album for 29 years, until the release of The Third Secret in 2018. Classic heavy metal, the mother of all metal styles, in its pure form remained pretty much a luxury outside the repertoire of the Big Five (Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Accept, Iron Maiden) as it quite quickly branched out into power, speed, thrash, doom and all the rest. The Germans showed a bigger interest in it (Victory, Bonfire, Heaven’s Gate), and partially Japan (Loudness, Crowley), but the majority were tributes from here and there that largely remained underground phenomena. The US scene produced the mighty Riot before it rushed to develop its own boisterous, epic brand of metal, and although Ratt and Motley Crue’s early efforts were going in the right direction, it all soon became too poppy, glammy and commercialized that at some stage no one really bothered with the discovering and the launching of the new Scorpions or the next Judas Priests.Fifth Angel stayed faithful to the power metal heritage of their homeland on the excellent debut, a seriously underappreciated collection of rousing anthems which should have shot them on the front row with Manowar, Savatage, Crimson Glory, etc. Mentioning the last two, there was a not very overt progressive flair in the execution of some of these numbers that could have been elaborated on… but the guys decided to leave the more complex landscapes to their colleagues, opting instead to unearth the rich heavy metal heritage on the album reviewed here. And the band have done an awesome job, also well conformed with the overall softening of the heavy/power metal arena, in the US in particular, under the influence of the ever-expanding at the time glam metal wave although traces of the latter are nowhere to be found as this is vintage heavy metal from beginning to end, one of the finest examples of “the mother” being treated with all the veneration it truly deserves. “Cathedral” is an emblematic opener with the bouncy riffs and the great chorus, Ted Pilot outstanding behind the mike without going into any extremes, staying within the mid-ranged parametres, keeping it moderately emotional. “Midnight Love” brings some of the power metal swagger of the debut with the dynamic galloping arrangements, but all is calm and pleasantly idyllic on the nice melancholic heavy rocker “Seven Hours”.“Broken Dreams” sounds like the obligatory ballad, but there’s more verve and drama to be witnessed here as this cut is another sure winner with its introspective, moderately pessimistic aura (it’s “broken dreams” we’re talking about, after all). The title-track is a feelgood heavy metal hymn which, if nothing else, brightens the mood and also sets the tone for the UFO cover of “Lights Out”, faithfully performed without any embellishments. “Wait for Me” is the only place where some cheese starts sticking out, another more ballad-prone piece with echoes of the Def Leppard repertoire, but time waits for no sleaze, and “Angel of Mercy” comes to provide more bite with its more energetic riffage the cavalcade growing into something wonderfully power metal-ish again on “We Rule”, a belligerent cut with hard-hitting guitars the latter stifled by another attempt at the ballad, this time marginally better, “So Long”, the cycle closed by the infectious crowd pleaser “Feel the Heat”.Every single song here has a clear radio hit potential as though the guys were deliberately aiming at this particular media, and by all rights they should have conquered it… in another fairer world. Their old fans must have frowned more than just now and then listening to these plainly pop metal-ish at times tracks, but one can’t deny the memorable song-writing and the professional execution, the overall feel quite reminiscent of Bonfire’s “Point Blank” released the same year. An ill-measured attempt at commercialism, to put it this way? Possibly, but this was all a part of the whole movement in the late-80’s with other power metal purveyors like Leatherwolf, Chastain, and even “the kings of metal” Manowar testing these mellower waters, trying to find the shortcut to the box office breakthrough…Which never became a dream come true for our friends here. The band folded after two strong showings, ones that took me ages literally to track down back in those days. But this is not the main reason why I have such a soft spot for their legacy; one always cherishes those who treat the senior musical citizens… sorry, canons with the proper amount of respect and devotion.

Album:

Perhaps one of the most legendary outfits to come out of Seattle, USA, alongside metal giants like Queensrÿche, Metal Church and Sanctuary, Fifth Angel took the scene by storm with their awesome homonym debut album in 1986. Shortly after releasing another gem in ‘Time Will Tell’ (1989), though, former vocalist Ted Pilot, Ed Archer (guitars) and Ken Mary (drums) decided to call it quits, only to reform in 2010 to headline one of the greatest festivals in the world to me, the iconic Keep It True Festival. Warmed by their reception and sparkled by another sold-out crowd at Keep It True 2017, Mary, John Macko (bass) and Kendall Bechtel (guitars, vocals) teamed-up in the studio to release their highly anticipated third album, ‘The Third Secret’.While – of course – this doesn’t stand a chance against the marvelous work put out in the 80’s, the Seattle natives managed to do a great job in terms of mixing old and new, with flairs of their heydays and many modern elements that work today (not too many, thank Odin), which took form in a respectable and fun comeback, that actually gives the impression that these dudes were active all this time, and not on a 22+ years hiatus.Opener “Stars Are Falling” gives us a taste of what’s to come by being a good balance between melodic and heavy, with Kendall Bechtel debuting his Dio-esque vocals on a high note. Catchy and relevant, the song chases away all doubts and proves that Fifth Angel is still in form.“We Will Rise” is another great tune with an even catchier chorus and stellar guitar work by Bechtel, especially in the main riffs. The next trio of songs is not quite on par with the powerful beginning, but still manages to keep the spirits high: “Queen of Thieves” has the same rhythm throughout its whole course and fails to be impactful. “Dust to Dust” antagonizes with this with a cool heavy/power atmosphere and good tempo, especially when looking at Ken Mary’s drum work which provides a healthy dose of strength. Sadly, “Can You Hear Me?” drops a bucket of cold water in the album dynamic so far because of its sorrowful, emotional aura and so-so execution, which hurts the overall experience.“This Is War” punches you in the face yet again with killer leads and a bombastic chorus. It reminds me of a Herman Frank type of song in the sense of being straightforward and crunchy at its maximum. Next up is “Fatima”, which was a very difficult song to review. It stands in a limbo between being a full song and an intro to the title track, so it doesn’t actually features any standout point worth mentioning except for the fact that it’s an atmospheric semi-ballad.The title-track, for that matter, lacks in enthusiasm and it’s just too common a song to carry an album name. I would even call it bland, because of the wrong choice for speed and the overall neutered songwriting in the track. From this moment on, though, the album takes a huge turn and Fifth Angel graces us with the best songs here: “Shame on You” and “Hearts of Stone”.In the most US-power way possible, both tracks are filled with pure, raw energy and represent the greatest side of a band like Fifth Angel: no frills, full-on bombastic attacks of inspiration and love for metal. “Shame on You” is faster and thrilling, and “Hearts of Stone”, best song in the entire album, has a marvelous stride to it, with galloping riffs and vicious execution; both have that newer US-power metal vibe akin of Riot V and Attacker that works wonders. These guys have been away from the metal scene for more than 22 years, and to do a comeback like ‘The Third Secret’ is not a mere feat. With brilliant guitar work and the overall songwriting being more than good, Fifth Angel has managed to gather some great material considering the circumstances that surrounded the band all these years. Like I said in the beginning, this won’t touch the band’s classic albums, but it’s more than worthy of your attention when considering today’s standards. Here’s hoping that this is a fruitful and healthy comeback, and not just a swansong.

Album:

Fifth Angel belongs to the bands, hailing from the greater Seattle area. Bands like Queensryche, Sanctuary and Heir Apparent have/had their homebase there. Fifth Angel comes from the same area although Bellevue, Washington is on the other side of the Lake Washington. However, Fifth Angel belong to the bands I’m following since the very early days and the disappointment was being when the band parted ways in 1989 after having launched two stellar albums. The bigger was the delight when the band reunited in 2017 and unveiled their third album in 2018. After another five years, and one pandemic later, the band has with ‘When Angels Kill’ their next album in the starting blocks.First signs have been very positive as the title track and the thundering ‘Resist the Tyrant’ have been launched as single prior to the album release date. Both tracks are at the top half of the album and provide a heavy start into ‘When Angels Kill’.The fourth longplayer of the band carries 14 songs and 69 minutes of powerful west coast metal. What stands out is, that the band builds on their trademarks. The powerful riffing, Ken Mary’s excellent drumming and Steven Carlson’s vocals, it all fits perfectly together on this release and makes songs like ‘Empire of Hate’ to outstanding metal anthems. With ‘Run to the Black’ and ‘Seven Angels’ the longplayer has two good tracks on the list while at the same time, they can’t really keep up with the rest of the album. However, the bottom half of the tracklist features great songs too. What is noticeable is the length, with some of the songs being beyond the six-minute running time. These songs are entertaining examples of good songwriting. Fifth Angel add a bit more bombast and drama to these songs and it is the cinematic ‘Ashes to Ashes’ that reminds of the ‘Operation Mindcrime’-days of Queensryche.Mentioning this milestone album, also ‘When Angels Kill’ is a concept album, telling the story of a guy named Phoenix. The main character lives in a world change and the oppression of a ruthless leader. In such an environment, Phoenix resists and starts to fight for a better world. To sum up: ‘When Angels Kill’ is the anticipated new Fifth Angel studio album and it is a next milestone in the band’s history. These songs reflect the greatness of powerful metal and proves that the spirit of the 80’s can be transferred into the 2020th with a metal heart pumping pure adrenaline through the veins.
