Bio:

Witchtower born in Jaén (Andalusia, Spain) in 2012, is a solo project from Víctor de la Chica, a Heavy rock musician from Jaén (Spain) Witchtower is oriented to NWOBHM, and had been recorded all instruments and the compositions by himself. But Witchwower is a live band, it have professional musicians who make the Witchtower’s sound totally real. In april of 2013, Witchtower release by YouTube his first EP “Return to the Witches’ Castle”, it triggered a lot of good coments and reviews in the underground metal from all over the world. It can be hear online, and download by MediaFire totally free. First of all, Witchtower believe and take proudly the old school metal and NWOBHM flag, because they believe strongly in it.

Album:

So it goes, now that it's been precisely three (3) months since both El Presidente Trump sealed off his border (or fate) and Jaén, Spain's toothy, yet none too gnarled, Witchtower, rounded the bend with enchanted broomstick(s)...as opposed to generic pitchfork(s), say.Thusly, the Tank-like and ever-ready, oh-so-rockin' n' rollin', as well as braggadociously fulminating, beat machine which is Torre de Brujas expounds, like Mach truck "Christine" styled possession, since digital (as well as independent), CD and 12 inch vinyl February inception under Germany's Unsilent Tombs Records -- itself, a heady, however conservative, purveyor of classic metal bliss akin to Iona, No Quarter and, in Vulture's Vengeance's Italian regard, latest 7 " single. (Of note, Spain's own Witchcraft Records slyly churned out a limited edition cassette in its own right, yet this still fails to explain away a cryptically received, or rather, un-accounted for, hectic single/bonus track long dissipated at the exalted self-tube.) Nary a minute into Witches' Domain, though, and one readily agrees the Andalusian solo project-turned-quartet hasn't lost or eschewed any of its mendaciously flowing, rollicking, top-heavy stride; beyond introduction proper, the thirty-plus second, not to mention wholly Iron Maiden-esque (in both nomenclature and mien), "A Revelation", a mani(a)cally twitching and finger-banging, lead-choked, par-for-the-Warhorse, dead-to-rights Witchtower banger in "The Theosophist" rolls out the crimson carpet in similarly flaming and non (covert) Covid coveted manner as the self-titled full-length debut's "Don't Turn Off The Lights", already a great (Southern) sign of things to come...undone! Assuredly, one needs to sits tight (or strapped, racked, flayed) in order to get full WT jollies with "Over The Top"...Ah! Things get real, now, whence likened afflictions of "Stronger Than You (Are)", as well as "Salem Witch Trials" (see 2014's Witchtower proper and sonorously softer Hammer of the Witches, from 2016, for assiduous, un-ambiguous situating) ensue, sans shoehorn or, ahem, four-leaf clover. In its favour, Witches' Domain is chock full of musical variegation, whether it be from the snappy, mid-pace, anthem-ic omnibulator "Night of the Witch" - an outlier, for sure, in terms of this release, in addition to entire discography - or any later, fully immersive and nigh well brewed catastrophy piece. ("Mrs. Artisson", while dishing out poisoned apples with razor blades, relegates front mage Victor de la Chica's tight-end rants/quasi-raps to the forefront prior to some Rush-likened progression sure to hit hard, er, heavy 1970s rock fans on the noggin...a bullseye within the bullseye, what!).Theme (not meme) wise, Witchtower is, once again, on (Pentagram) point. Hell, dig, with side-kicking gremlins, "Zugarramurdi (Sorginak!)", as a quick fix Wikipedia chit reveals it's "a town and municipality located in the province and autonomous community of Navarre in northern Spain [which] passed into history as the setting of alleged occult activity featured in the infamous Basque witch trials held in Logroño in the seventeenth century. (Uff, pass the sardines, please!) On a personal whim, I radically dig the honky tonk, arm-in-arm (wink!), festively boogieing hat (or black cat) trampler standing in as "The World Is Upside Down", not least of which is its starkly arresting, untoward swing riff combined with ratcheted palm muted notes, the (b)lot of it going a long way towards bringing the mad house down (Susperia style, eh?!). The mid-point jazzy solo riot on behalf of Vic and fellow Toca Madera ax-slave Antonio J. Morillas readily (lam)bastes my goat in all kinds of maliciously seasoned/numeric tumeric, a spiralling crescendo of chromatic craziness, notwithstanding.Actually, at first glance and on first listen, Witches' Domain almost sounds too contrived - and even a mite long - for its own good. Hence, I strongly recommend delving into the Spaniards' work bottom-up, that is, starting with the titular album from more innocent (or less hysterical) times...That said, Witchtower's latest (not ill-fated) literally grows on you, not unlike tomb mould, and I'd even venture, some of the later ditties, like the knavishly sashaying and bass-rampant "Love Potion" and/or sluggish and other-Worldly, well-tambourine'd & cymbal ridden schizo piece "Look for the Truth", hold (up) as many incandescent wax candles as any of their well-(t)read, above-mentioned (Satanic) brethren. For its part, "Witches' Domain", as late-game, pre-emptive closer bulldozer, makes the most of its 7.667 minutes of mercurially espoused and malignant, tumour infested growth. Of course, it begins to get a little experimental at this point, but as El Dorado's Bucky Head can relate, over in the land of fruits and nuts (California-syde), such instrumentally eclectic legerdemain can only be good for showbiz, can it not? Granted, while filler is predominantly absent from this third full-rate effort, there are a couple tracks afoot whose omission wouldn't have detracted much, all told. The atmospherically bleak, but highly Angel Witch-ish "Chosen", as closer, thankfully, slams shut the crone's Oak panelled door with aplomb, if not to dying sound of raucously cackling mirth and laughter! (Kudos, as well, to rhythmic cloutters Miguel Moreno and Udem, on bass and drums, respectively.) In a toxic peach pit/nutshell, Witchtower's latest encompasses best of prior efforts, yet, sadly, lacks a bit of the full-bore, kick-ass spontaneity of its namesake (release). Still, truth be told, and despite a killer staple in "Fast Broomsticks", Witches' Domain duly trumps its pockmarked predecessor, Hammer of Witches. Only time, now, will tell, if Witch Shtick triumphs as (a) fraternity, in quaternity...

Album:

Once broken free of the liquid handcuffs known as methadone, I plan to not only visit my parents at their retirement retreat in Alicante, but also stray like a cat to catch live a couple of old time Spaniard favorites, namely local War Dogs and Witchtower, from the Andalusian town of Jaén. Why the sudden revelation? It's because Witchtower followed up with its fourth full-length since 2012, the provocatively named Voyeur, which, duration wise, falls within same raucous camp as the solo project-turned-quartet's first wizardly pair of albums, clocking in at around forty minutes compared to 2020's Witches Domain, with its relatively expansive fifty. Aside from that, I'd have to say Voyeur is as much of a mixed bag, as it juggles Witchtower's borderline psychotic trad metal rockiness with deeper and more profound song development, from tangentially zany riff constructs to a more elaborate, at times malevolently funky and unpredictable, rhythm section. (I wish the cool acoustic touch of "No Chance"'s Led Zep-y intro lasted longer than three seconds.) A big factor drawing me to Witchtower like Rumpelstiltskin to the miller's daughter Freya is front man Victor's wildly loose and unhinged vocal deflections which first rattled me to the core on 2014's rough and infernal self-titled debut. Tagging along in the studio, other than simply live this time, are fellow axman Antonio, bassist Miguel and drummer Udem - such an apparent clout gain is evident from the get-go on the lofty and structurally mechanical opener "Chain Reaction", a six minute twister and turner which feels like a closer, but evidently, Tower Of Witch turns things upside down for a change. As usual, expedient and schizophrenic leads sprout like so many musty mushrooms whilst right off the bat, production levels eschew the gang's initially swampy murkiness in favor of a crystal clear, all-hands on deck approach where instruments' collide together to form the Spaniards' telltale veil of power. Although Voyeur fails to enchant as much as prior efforts, early tracks such as the laid back, stomping waltz "Sherry Lee" and top highlight "Voyeur" duly do it for me. The former's inherent feminine enigma harks greatly to Mercyful Fate's classic "Melissa" (also, for want of a modern and obscure example, Facing Fear of Brazil's random as heck "Ana Jensen"); the latter then slays with its choppy build-up leading into a dank and austere bass/drum pound-down complete with slackly Grim Reaper-ish backing notes. Yet, it's when Vic trounces along with his unholy albeit ever-hip and snappy one-two delivery that all bets - and, for our titular antagonists, undergarments - are off. The killer solo especially stirs into a frenzy. As well, keen observation discerns mild Dave Mustain-ery within the verses. Kicking off Voyeur's second half, "The Darkest Light" possesses an old school thrash feel, with a hauntingly chanted chorus reminiscent of number one discography gem "Stronger Than You (Are)", from said groundbreaking debut. Worth mentioning is how its fast and crunchy triplet riff evokes Heart's immortal FM staple "Barracuda". Another congruous rocker consists of wickedly titled "Dr. Knife", an obviously slapdash concoction of usual Witchtower badass-ness, fueled to the gills by a mystic bridge in vein of 70s inspired psychedelic rock. For completion's sake, a final pair of inverted finishers "The Gallows" and considerably shorter instrumental "The Day The Sun Explodes" draws - or in this perverted case, shuts! - curtains on Voyeur's last-minute Metal Archives inclusion. (Are you still ready to take a "look"?)
