Leatherwolf has undergone many line-up changes during its existence. No member has been constant throughout its entire timeline but several former members have returned at differing times. Universal Music Japan has started this year another campaign of their ‘HR/HM 1000‘ series, that meaning the reissue of long time out of print albums from their Hard Rock / Heavy Metal catalog at the price of 1000 Yen = about USD 9.As part of the 2022 HR-HM 1000 Vol.4 series we find LEATHERWOLF self-titled album from 1987, their first album on major label Island Records, and for many the band’s finest moment. Unlike a lot of California-based hair metal bands, Leatherwolf actually qualified as a real US metal band. They put a melodic, polished L.A. style on the traditional sound of the genre.Think a mix of Crimson Glory and Armored Saint, with the commercial appeal of Dokken or Skid Row. “Leatherwolf” kick some serious ass.The sound quality on this Japanese CD is great.Keeping parts of their metallic roots and adding equal amounts of elaborated instrumentation and Hard Rock songwriting sensibilities, they crafted what would be an excellent yet often forgotten album.On “Leatherwolf” the band perfected their unique sound: a triple axe attack – yes, there’s 3 guitar players here – handled by Carey Howe, Jeff Gayer and also lead vocalist Michael Olivieri.Vocally, Olivieri owns a great register with a glam metal approach to it, but he nails enough notes to make sure you know that he can belt it out with the best of the metal crowd.The songs are hard hitting, but are also quite melodic. There’s a great mid-80s sense of energy and drama on this album that I totally dig. Listing standout tracks is almost pointless, since nearly every song on this album is a killer.Ranging anywhere from Dokken-esque riffs to the very glam influenced cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s classic “Bad Moon Rising”, there’s a lot to love here.We find an excellent keyboard line into in “Princess Of Love”, and a terrific meaty ballad in “Share a Dream”. “The Calling” was the single released to promote the record and it’s one of the highlights driven by huge riff swirling solos and a massive shout along chorus.Like Fifth Angel and Crimson Glory, Leatherwolf remains as one of the ’80s US metal scene best kept secrets.There are a ton of acts from the era that were mostly forgotten for decades. With a distinct blend of traditional metal, glammy hard rock and a unique three guitar attack Leatherwolf were unique.

'Kill the Hunted' is the first new studio album from Orange County CA metal merchants LEATHERWOLF since 2006's 'World Asylum', a record as uncompromising and deadly as the title suggests. It marks the latest chapter in the band's often turbulent history as original drummer and main driving force, Dean Roberts, and long-time guitarist, Rob Math, are joined by fierce new vocalist, Keith Adamiak, young shredder, Luke Man, who had previously toured with the band, and a pair of veterans, Barry Sparks (b) and Wayne Findlay (k/g), both alumni of the storied Michael Schenker Group. 'Kill the Hunted' is an 11-course metal feast for the senses that runs the gamut from visceral daggers such as the in-your-face opener 'Hit the Dirt' and shinkicker 'Madhouse', to the anthemic 'Only the Wicked', the Wolves' prog minded multi-tier gem, 'The Henchman' (featuring guest lead guitars by Joel Hoekstra of Whitesnake), and the tense and brooding '(Evil) Empires Fall' whose vibes recall the crushing 'Kill and Kill Again' off their eponymous 1984 debut EP. In a classic full circle moment, Leatherwolf re-connected with engineer Randy Burns (Megadeth, Kreator, Helstar) who had manned the boards for said EP at the time. Burns was eager to jump aboard and apply his mixing expertise to 'Kill the Hunted' before the files were put into the hands of L.A. mastering legend, Tom Baker (Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Pantera), for the final polish. The eye catching 'Kill the Hunted' artwork was created by noted artist, Marc Sasso, whose credits include Dio, Halford, and Rob Rock.

The first 3 albums from LEATHERWOLF are among the best ’80s US metal / hard rock had to offer. One of you asked if these have been remastered, and the answer, after some investigation, is ‘yes’.The only remastered versions were done by the band themselves, sold via their own label Leatherwolf Records during the last decade, and available in limited quantities, now out of print.“Street Ready“ is Leatherwolf’s third album released in 1989, and according to times, is pretty much hard rock oriented with a polished production sound.While not well known by casual ’80s metal / hard rock enthusiast, Leatherwolf are a killer band. Maybe they were a bit too heavy for the massive audience, but they could have easily reached, for example, any W.A.S.P., Fifth Angel or even Dokken fan.The had everything; great songs, an outstanding guitar team with triple (!) axe attack (the intro for the opening “Wicked Ways” speaks for itself), a powerful sound, a big label, and even a the proper looks.Believe me, these guys should have been much bigger.To those who are not familiar with this Californian outfit, they play a hard edged, rugged, and more aggressive alternative to the sleazy steeped LA scene of the era. Comparisons to Queensryche, Riot and Accept are easily made, along with other famous ’80s acts such as Dokken, Crimson Glory, Icon and why not, some Judas Priest.The riffs definitely pay homage to classic ’80s metal yet, especially in this 3rd effort “Street Ready”, with a groove and punch of traditional hard rock, all with melody.Just picture a middle ground between the chunky heaviness of Fifth Angel and the lighthearted melodic nature of Dokken and you’ll be on the right track.It’s obvious that we can’t consider them a totally underground band (they even had high rotation with a couple of videos from this album in MTV and VH1), but they never started to really take off.After their straightforward debut and their more melodic sophomore album, they arrived at the end of the ’80s with everything on their side.They closed themselves in the famous Compass Point Studios (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) with Kevin Beamish (Y&T, Keel, MSG) and registered an awesome collection of songs for this “Street Ready”.Ranging from the furious yet polished opener “Wicked Ways”, “Take a Chance”, and “Too Much” to catchy anthems as “Hideaway” and “Lonely Road”, this album rocks.A varied, precisely-played, and very well-written album where all tracks are winners.Leatherwolf’s “Street Ready” blends like few the boundaries between hard rock and US metal, and this is what makes this album special. While many metal bands never let a tune get in the way of their music, Leatherwolf have always used their instrumental expertise to assist the melody.This remastered reissue is a true gem, very hard to find, including 2 bonus tracks not present in the original release.There’s a misprint error on the artwork, only listing 11 songs (with the bonus tracks) even though the 12 tracks are present on the CD. Another reason to be considered a collector’s item.

The only remastered versions were done by the band themselves, sold via their own label Leatherwolf Records during the last decade, and available in limited quantities, now out of print.This self-titled , 1984“Leatherwolf” is their first full length, a strong piece of classic US metal with melody.Despite many assumed that a moniker like Leatherwolf could only offer lipstick blotting tips and Aqua Net ingredients as lyrics, at their origins this Californian five piece played classic metal with melody, in the US mold of the genre.As confusing as this may sound, Leatherwolf’s first three recordings were all called “Leatherwolf”.First, the band released a 5 track EP appeared in 1984 (Tropical Records). Then, the EP was expanded to a full LP and released as Leatherwolf in 1984-1985 on a few different labels – in Europe re-titled ‘Endangered Species’.Finally, in 1987, Leatherwolf released an album of all new material on Island Records, also known as ‘Leatherwolf II’ to avoid confusion.Leatherwolf were known for their muscular brand of US metal, whose sound is built around the highly touted “triple axe attack”. Leatherwolf’s excellent self-titled debut is heavy, but melodic and never short on hooks.They combine the catchiness that much of the early 80’s California metal bands were known for, with a British heavy metal flare. The music itself is also slightly progressive, not unlike early Crimson Glory.The triple axe attack is dynamic and no where more apparent than in the band’s eponymous titled song that finishes out side two of the record. Tying the wall of guitars together are the charismatic, smooth and aggressive vocals of Michael Oliveri.“Spiter”, “Endangered Species”, “Kill and Kill Again”, “Leatherwolf” and “Season of the Witch” are kick-@ss, headbanging punchy numbers , while “Season of the Witch” and the title cut are just as heavy, yet considerably more intricate than anything released by a ‘metal’ band at the time in the US.“Tonight’s the Night”, “Off the Track”, “and “The Hook” are more commercial, still heavy, sonically putting the band somewhere between the burgeoning thrash scene and the popular L.A. glam metal craze.Leatherwolf’s debut is a brilliant mix of traditional metal and melodic polish. This is American, ’80s ‘US Metal’ at it’s finest. Unfortunately for the band, they are one of the best kept secrets from the ’80s.Yeah, Leatherwolf were quite unique: too much melodic for rabid metalheads, and too much edgy for glammy sleazy fans.
