The Pre-Black Sun era starts on 1999, when Nicolás Estrada (Drums), Christopher Gruenberg (Guitar), Xavier Diab (Guitar), Juan Miguel Iturralde (Bass) were introduced to each other by friends in common.The instrumental part of the band was solid and in need of a frontman/singer; which was finally taken by Chemel Neme (lead vocals), who was a singer for Sanctuary and Ciclopes del Silencio.With a complete lineup, the band was tight and rising However, Xavier Diab had to leave the band for personal reasons. With his leaving, the band was left without a bassist. The best option was to contact a friend and bassist Luis Fabara to play bass and Juan Miguel Iturralde would switch to guitar. With this lineup the first single, METAL MADNESS, is recorded and promoted. The band takes on the local scene with great acceptance.On the year 2004, Black Sun engages their first studio album recording, which will end up being named “Tyrant From a Foreign Land”. It debuted in the local scene and music stores on July 2005, attaining excellent reviews and acceptance from the local rockers. The album ended up on the TOP 25 BEST SELLING charts in Ecuador, distributed mainly by Tower Records stores.During this year Black Sun was part of large and important events, like the B3 concert in Guayaquil, which sold out and overwhelmed the producer’s expectative.By the end of the year one of the songs from the first album was included in the local TV networks most watched sports program on Canal Uno. This event opened up the band’s reach to a more diverse group; it helped the band catapult its status, closing the year in great fashion.By 2006 Black Sun had made their way to become one of biggest bands in the scene, becoming the opening act for Mago de Oz in Quito, in front of 12,000+ fans. The group received an excellent response from Quito’s crowd.On 2007, Black Sun focuses on composition for the next album. The new songs became part of what it would become the band’s biggest production yet, which took the band to German soils. Black Sun contacted Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray y Ex – Helloween), owner of High Gain Studios where the band gives birth to their second album. Luis Fernando Fabara leaves the band and for the album “Dance of Elders” are recorded by Lady Catman, ex guitarist of the german band “Die Apokaliptischen Reiter .On 2009 Black Sun became the supporting act for EDGUY, one of the biggest exponents of European Metal, for a show that took place in Quito, Ecuador. During this year the band finishes recording the second album as well. Early in 2010 the band contacts Felipe Machado (Final Frontier) art designed of well known bands of the Genre (Rhapsody Of Fire, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth) who gave life to the “Dance of Elders” album artwork. By the end of the year, the band has polished the details of the second album “Dance of Elders” which is released in Ecuador and some countries in Latinamerica.The bass guitar spot left by Luis Fernando Fabara needed a replacement. On recommendation of guitarist Christopher Gruenberg, Santiago Salem, friend and ocassional roadie, joins the band.Nowadays, BLACK SUN is a more mature and professional band, gazing into what will be a third album, the release of the new video of the song DEHUMANIZED and the release of the new web page and newest lineup. All in all, it happens on the 10th year of the band being in effect on the music scene.

Album:

Black Sun's latest production, The Puppeteer, continues the band upheaval to reach higher standards. It was Produced by Timo Tolkki and Santtu Lehtiniemi, recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, joining efforts once again with Mikko Karmila (Mixing) and Mika Jussila (Mastering) at Finnvox Studios; this collaboration proves to be an organic, explosive, Hard Rockin' delivery from the south american rockers! This album also features the work of high praised guests musicians like Henning Basse (ex Metalium and new lead singer for Firewind ) on vocal production, backup vocals and guest lead vocals on Vain and Nino Laurenne from Thunderstone (guest guitar solo), Netta Dahlberg (guest vocals on Let Me Be ) and Santtu Lehtniniemi (guest solos).The song Robert The Doll featured in the New Metal Tracks editorial by Spotify, and Let Me Be in local and international radio stations, reaffirming the band's ongoing success.

This time, the band hired Nino Laurenne as the producer for this project, which was meant to be the band's first EP.During the production of Black Sun's new material, the band parted ways with the band's longtime lead singer. Under the wing of the band's producer, Black Sun managed to find ways to finish the upcoming material, which will feature guest singers in all songs.'Still Alive' is the first single from the band's upcoming release, and it will mark a new era, a clean slate for the South American rockers. Producer NINO LAURENNE arranged Finnish metal legends like TONY KAKKO, LORDI, NOORA LOUHIMO, PASI RANTANEN, and ELIAS VILJANEN along with up and coming talents like NETTA LAURENNE (Smackbound), JUKKA PELKONEN (Omnium Gatherum) and ASIM SEARAH (Damnation Plan / Wintersun) to feat in this powerful and catchy metal hymn. 'Still Alive' was released on January 21st, 2020, along with a lyric video, and it shook the metal world with a Finnish all-star lineup that surpassed anyone's expectations, setting the stage for the upcoming release.

Album:

Black Sun are a Power Metal band from Ecuador that have been a major player in their local scene since 2005, opening for big acts like Judas Priest and Kreator and getting numerous accolades while not really getting much recognition outside of their home country. They started as a sort of low-fi HelloGammaMaiden clone that was near ubiquitous at the time, but early on they were held back further by iffy vocals and wussy ballads. They steered towards a more Traditional sound on The Puppeteer, which featured more hard-hitting songwriting and greatly improved singing, but it wasn't first-class by any stretch. This leads us to their upcoming EP, Silent Enemy, which sees the band parting ways with old singer Chemel Neme and teaming up with luminary Finnish producer Nino Laurenne, who appears to have greatly influenced several aspects of this record. When you combine that with all the marketing they've put into it, which includes a freaking short film based on the album's concept, it's clear that they're really trying to make this their breakout hit. After giving it a few listens, I think it could well end up becoming just that.The first thing you'll probably notice about this album is that it has the best production the band has ever had, with a lush, crystal clear sound that gives every element room to breathe while sounding heavier than anything else they've ever done. This ties in with the songwriting, which has gotten a harder edge over previous works while still remaining a Power Metal album, making them less comparable to Gamma Ray and more towards Iron Savior and maybe even early Battle Beast with how energetic and unabashedly cheesy it all is. While they don't manage to be as compelling as either of those bands, they still have propulsive songwriting, killer riffs, and addictive vocal hooks that put this release well beyond their previous output. This is most notable in the vocals, which are handled by a bevy of guest singers like Noora Louhimo and Tony Kakko, who all deliver solid performances that are backed by much better vocal lines than in the past. This is particularly evident in the advance single "Still Alive", which features some solid interplay between a handful of singers for the verses while the chorus does more of a choir effect, which is bound to make it a crowd pleaser at live shows.Despite all this praise, this isn't a perfect release by any means. The songwriting is solid, but does plenty that'll be familiar to fans of the genre, and the EP itself is held back by the intro, outro, and "No Return", which are mostly sound effects and pumped-up orchestrations meant to go with the concept of the album that end up just taking up space and making this an album of four real songs rather than seven. The story as presented isn't much to talk about either, as it's a generic '80s Sci-Fi romp about a resistance group going up against evil robots, but there's hardly any material to tell the story with. Probably saved a lot of that for the short film.I've written a lot about this, and I guess it's because I can appreciate a band that's not ashamed to be bombastic and over the top like Metal was always expected to be once upon a time. This is a short, simple, unassuming soundtrack to wearing leather jackets and punching robots, and if that doesn't sound like a fun time, then you're taking yourself too seriously. A solid new beginning.
