Bio:

Anvil are a Canadian heavy metal band from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 1978. The band consists of Steve "Lips" Kudlow (vocals, guitar), Robb Reiner (drums) and Chris Robertson (bass). To date, the band has released fifteen studio albums, and has been cited as having influenced many notable heavy metal groups, including Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax and Metallica. The band, in particular Kudlow and Reiner, was the subject of the 2008 documentary film, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by the screenwriter and former Anvil roadie, Sacha Gervasi. Upon its release, the film garnered critical acclaim from many major publications, and has since brought the band renewed recognition, including opening slots with AC/DC and Saxon. Appearances at both major heavy metal festivals, including Download, Loud Park and Hellfest, and independent music festivals like Bumbershoot and SXSW, also followed the release of the film. Reviewers described Anvil as a pioneering hair metal band that was popular in the 1980s but then faded into obscurity in the 1990s, while refusing to stop playing, recording and gigging.Anvil's antics on and off stage, the setbacks they suffered, and their determination to keep going was compared to the fictional band Spinal Tap.

Album:

Canadian metal legends ANVIL will release their new album, "Anvil Is Anvil", on February 26, 2016 worldwide (excluding Japan) via SPV/Steamhammer. The album will be available on digipak CD (incuding one bonus track and a poster), 2LP gatefold clear version and as a digital download."Anvil Is Anvil" was recorded in October at Redhead 4 Studios in Pulheim, near Cologne, Germany, with producer Martin "Mattes" Pfeiffer. According to a press release, the CD is "an unambiguous, uncompromising recording, typical of this band. At the same time it's fresh, occasionally surprising and generally exciting through and through. A stalwart metal manifesto by a band who stand for authenticity and credibility like few others in this fast-lived business."Comments ANVIL guitarist/vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow: "We're sometimes criticised for never changing. But why should we change something we're renowned for? Isn't it much more important to stay faithful to yourself? To do what you do best?"The idea behind our latest album is: we are what we are, and that's how it's going to stay!"He continues: "Time will tell whether this album is the absolute pinnacle of our career. But I would already refer to it as 'gaining the momentum.'"The year 2013 was a perfect new start for ANVIL. We were touring, went on to write the new material, toured again and returned to compose some more. During that time, the new lineup gelled into a real unit."ANVIL last year parted ways with bassist Sal Italiano and replaced him with Chris Robertson. Lips says: "The arrival of Chris was just as significant for us as the film back in 2008. He helped me enormously with my vocal lines, which is why my voice sounds better than ever on stage and also in the studio."The same could be said of the new material. "Anvil Is Anvil" sounds all of one piece and presents the band's amazing diversity, combined with their conscious loyalty to the compositional DNA of their own classics. "Die For A Lie", for example, sounds like a contemporary version of "Jackhammer" and the stomping "Runaway Train" features the same directives as "Smoking Green", only based on Kudlow's present-day maturity."I practically graduated from the Bob Marlette university," the ANVIL frontman praises the American producer with whom the band recorded the 2011 release "Juggernaut Of Justice" and 2013's "Hope In Hell". "Bob showed me how to write songs which really mean something. So when I started to compose this time around, I was perfectly groomed."For Lips, whose family is Jewish, as is drummer Robb Reiner's, it was a special moment to work with a German producer in a German studio."There's a song on 'Anvil Is Anvil' that's called 'Forgive Don't Forget', which says everything about our attitude," Lips says. "Nobody is guilty of anything that happened before their time, especially since Germany has critically examined and come to terms with its own past."ANVIL have always been welcome in Germany, even during difficult phases. When we think of Germany, we think of friends, not war criminals."Lips calls himself an idealist who takes a clear political stance with songs such as "Gun Control" and "Die For A Lie" and also denounces the ambiguous role of the church. He says: "Religion is frequently used to involve people in military conflict. Hate in the name of God — that's just wrong!"Yet "Anvil Is Anvil" not only touches on sensitive issues but also documents the band's lust for life, their dynamic musical style and their absolute down-to-earthiness. When Lips delivers the line "Ace of Spades and the joker is wild" on "It's Your Move" with a surprisingly realistic MOTÖRHEAD timbre, it proves his sense of humor and is an homage at the same time ("[I've been] close friends with Lemmy since 1981. He is definitely part of the family"). And when ANVIL invite their fans to the studio to join the choir on "Daggers And Rum", it only shows the closeness between the musicians and their fans.Lips says: "We've never recorded a pirate metal shanty such as 'Daggers & Rum' before. I'm sure this number will go down well on the upcoming tour."Regarding the cover, Robb Reiner adds: "This time around, it was suggested I paint the cover art for the release by brother Lips, after I had come up with the concept and showing him study sketches drawn out. The simple, straight-to-the-point composition was much fun to render on canvas in oil. I spent about six weeks to complete it."ANVIL will embark on a massive European tour with DIRKSCHNEIDER (the band led by former ACCEPT and current U.D.O. frontman Udo Dirkschneider) in February-April 2016, followed by a U.S. tour from May 12 until June 18.

Album:

Underrated, seldom appreciated and sometimes even unheard of, it can prove difficult when trying to explain to those not educated, the essential part of metal history that is Anvil. The once innovators and arguably the Father’s our much beloved genre, Anvil fell into myth and legend, their name finding itself at the centre of many a mosher’s tale. But as luck and some much belated dues would have it, Anvil resurged after the eye opening documentary on the band, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” dropped jaws worldwide and with that, a second chance and one sustainable career was born. ‘Pounding The Pavement’, the bands 17th album, is set for an early 2018 release and it has fans wondering; are Anvil still relevant? Or are they simply milking their namesake and a lot of well timed luck?Album opener “Bitch In The Box” reminds us exactly what Anvil are all about. This one mans hate poem to that voice in your sat nav is chock full of power riffing, lyric spitting good fun. Blatantly naff (in the best sense of the word) and far from life changing, it remains still, almost impossible not to fall in love and give yourself over to those hilariously good chorus chants. The good fun continues, too, as the tongue in cheek “Doing What I Want” channels, if only briefly, the ghost of Motorhead’s Lemmy as Steve “Lips” Kudlow sings over some simple but exceptionally good riffing. With his thunderous, dangerous and vigorous drummer that is Robb Reiner holding down the fort, blasting his way through the record, Reiner claims ownership on tracks such as “Ego”, “Black Smoke” and title track “Pounding the Pavement”.Sometimes the Anvil misses the mark too, however. The storytelling stylings in “Nanook of the North” feel more dated than they do stimulating, as do the views portrayed in “World of Tomorrow”. Feeling more like a melancholic lecture from your elders as opposed to any fresh or interesting viewpoints being offered, with these two tracks in particular, Anvil show (both musically and lyrically) not their age, but more so that they are still writing in the past. The dearly and deservedly beloved documentary mentioned earlier revealed much about the band. Their commitment, perseverance and their ability to retain faith in their vision despite its more turbulent moments. Another element highlighted was the clash of the titans like hissy fits between the two founding members, particularly when writing, despite their obvious brotherhood. And this was felt on not at all, but certainly more than a few moments this side of their catalogue. Here on ‘Pounding the Pavement’, it does not seem to follow suit. Felt throughout is a stronger sense of unity, particularly on the blues driven “Rock That Shit” and adrenaline churning “Smash Your Face” to name but a few. These acknowledge, with bassist Chris Robertson, a sense of a band as opposed to three musicians just playing together, which unfortunately was felt on some of their more recent works. But not here. While there might be some truth to the notion that Anvil is still living off much of their old school street cred, there is also something to be said about the usually overlooked luxury of having them around. One that the metal community generally takes for granted. Anvil may be spitting out 80’s style riffing with a millenial polished production, but where would metal be without it? While it would be interesting, to say the least, to see Anvil progress with the times, there’s always part of you that never wants them to change.‘Pounding The Pavement‘ is a sat nav hating, smash your face up bating wild ride and the best installment to the Anvil catalogue in some time.

AFM Records will release “Legal At Last“, the new album from Canadian metal legends ANVIL, on February 14, 2020, as a digipak and various colored vinyl. The Toronto-based group was formed in 1978 by childhood friends, guitarist / vocalist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner. ANVIL is considered to have been an influence on many metal bands, including METALLICA, MEGADETH, QUEENSRYCHE, ANTHRAX, etc.Though initially a four-piece band, ANVIL’s current lineup includes Kudlow, Reiner and bassist Chris Robertson. The band gained popularity and new fans since the 2008 theatrical documentary, “Anvil: The Story Of Anvil”, which is currently available on Netflix. There’s something satisfying and warming about sitting down to listen to a new ANVIL album. You know it’s going to be fun, classic traditional metal, vintage ’80s type of stuff, almost in a nostalgic way. These lads are a metal institution and we love ’em for keeping at it – no matter what the cost – and so we arrive, 42 years after they first formed, at ‘Legal At Last’ (album number 18 for the uninitiated).Don’t go expecting experimentation or modernism here, this classy metal / hard, and you’ll probably get an immediate kick out of the title track, which opens proceedings in typical ANVIL fashion. Back-to-basics heavy f@ckin’ metal with cheesy lyrics is the order of the day and Anvil, as always, are serving up quite the platter. It’s not all metal cliches though with “Chemtrails” rallying against the use of insecticides and airborne pollutants while offering plenty of pleasing chug with its ecological message; not that you come to ANVIL for political diatribes and in-depth social commentary, of course.Surprisingly, Anvil continue down this path with the environmental rant of “Gasoline” advocating the use of renewable energy and showcases our intrepid heroes as courageous eco-warriors.They don’t stop there either, with “Plastic in Paradise” regaling us with, surprise, surprise, the reality of our littered oceans. If you weren’t aware of the damage we’re doing to planet Earth, you certainly do now, right!Still, we’re hardly in concept album territory here and it’s soon back to shit-kicking 80’s metal with “I’m Alive” ripping off the central riff from Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever” but hey, it’s a great, classic riff.“Glass House” is a bouncy little bastard and is home to the best riff on the album (and some classic Robb Reiner kick-drum action). The likes of the tub-thumping “Nabbed In Nebraska” are catchy as hell and feel like a warm metal hug around your chubby midriff. The bottom line is if you love ANVIL for who they are and what they represent – true ’80s metal / hard rock – you are highly likely to enjoy every last second of “Legal At Last”.

Album:

On Impact Is Imminent, ANVIL fires off merciless riff attacks, relentlessly driving drums and impressive bass grooves, complemented by vocal melodies and lyrics that inevitably drill themselves into the listeners aural tract. As always, Kudlow and founding member and drummer Robb Reiner, are at the epicentre of this heavy metal extravaganza. For the past eight years, they have been supported by bassist Chris Robertson, who not only complements the ANVIL fold on a personal level, but also enhances the tracks with his powerful low frequency bass parts and backing vocals. Here we have a legend. Behold my dear fan. Kneel before the Metal legends. Here come Anvil one of the most legendary Heavy Metal bands from all times. Show of hands the headbanger that watched “Anvil! The story of Anvil” who could let their eyes completely dry. Not even release a drop. Impossible, huh? It’s the kind of story that many of us know by heart because lived something near or similar. I did.Ok. From the time I received the e-mail with the Anvil press package I started to write this review. Anvil are a band that is in my mind for some time. I remember to have read about a lot about them during my teens but I just heard the band in a cassete compilation in 1999. Yes, that famous cassete compilation I’m always talking about. Yeah, right. Well, the band has a long career and this “Impact Is Imminent” is their nineteenth release. Needless to say that Anvil are one of the most underrated bands of all times. More than Cirith Ungol, I guess. It is so Because they did taste the flavor of fame in the 1980s and had a really good reputation performing some very famous gigs all around this sad and linely and pathetic little world. From where I’m standing, this album follows Anvil’s tradition of never recording the same album. “Impact Is Imminent” is very different from the albums I’ve heard. Not too many I have to say. Unfortunately. There are lots of rock’n’roll citations here as the full brass sections “Gomez” – Have I already said that I don’t like brass section nor saxophones? But whatever. This album has more varied tracks than the others I know of. Kick off track “Take a Lesson” has an Alice Cooper’s “Freedom” era taste from the beginning with a narrator introducing the band. Curious fact, the narrator is no one but Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters – a band that there is no way of me liking it, sorry. Ok, I happen to remember that this kind of introduction is more likely to Kiss but the song sounds much more Alice Cooper’s. Only Anvil could give their songs their acid and twisted personality to make them evil enough to be Metal. Perhaps “Impact Is Imminent” is their most rock’n’roll album. For instance, “Bad Side of Town” has a guitar solo that sounds a lot like “Born to Be Wild” made famous by Steppenwolf and a biker’s anthem. In here Steve “Lips” Kudlow’s voice gets so near to Alice’s. Check “Another Gun Fight” out to get to know what I’m telling you. I really don’t know why I do this kind of comparison but, you know, it’s educational. Another rock’n’roll citation is the instrumental “Teabag” with its guitar riffings. Does anybody hear a ‘Rooock’n’roll? I keep thinking if I am overreacting to say I think Anvil to sound like Alice Cooper. Maybe. But are Anvil sounding like Alice Cooper, yes they are indeed. I guess only “Fire Rain” sounds more old Anvil of all the album with its acid guitar riffings and speed.Above all things Anvil are a band to be respected for their history. Against all odds they have always been loyal to what they believe. Juts to remember in 1981 the almighty Lemmy Kilmister asked Kudlow to play guitar for Motörhead, to replace the other legend “Fast” Eddie Clarke, but Kudlow declined. We’ve got to respect that.Anvil “Impact Is Imminent” will be released on May 20th via AFM Records.
