Bio:

Grim Reaper are a British heavy metal band from the new wave of British heavy metal era. The band was formed in 1979 in Droitwich, England, by guitarist Nick Bowcott. They were discovered after winning a Battle of the Bands featuring over 100 bands. They were eventually signed to Darryl Johnston's Ebony Records, and their debut album was See You in Hell. The album was released in 1984 and was distributed worldwide through RCA Records.Grim Reaper soon became readily identifiable with Bowcott's guitar work and lead vocalist Steve Grimmett's head voice vocals. Their successful world tour included a support show at Texxas Jam playing to over 20,000 people. Their 1985 follow-up, Fear No Evil, showed improvement on the production front and also enjoyed moderate success in both the United States and Europe.Legal battles with Ebony Records delayed the release of the band's third album Rock You to Hell by almost two years. The album was released directly through RCA Records in 1987. However, by this time Grim Reaper's melodic Heavy metal sound had fallen out of favor as much of the metal market moved toward heavier fare like thrash metal and speed metal. Even the major label distribution and popular video for the title track could not save the band. With the production of their fourth studio album (reportedly to be called Nothing Whatsoever to Do with Hell) about to start, another round of legal action from Ebony Records effectively dealt the death blow to Grim Reaper, subsequently disbanding in 1988.Grimmett went on to front Onslaught and Lionsheart, as well as perform on several tribute albums. Bowcott became a freelance music writer, and later staff contributor, for publications like Circus and Guitar World. Bowcott also worked with Marshall Amplification's United States division. He also played in the band Barfly who recorded an album with Jack Ponti producing and Michael Wagener mixing for RCA records. In 2006, Eddie Trunk announced on Metal Mania that the band has reformed. The "original" lineup of Grim Reaper (without Nick Bowcott) played the Keep It True VI festival in Lauda-Königshoffen on 8 April 2006. The band played the annual MetalBrew festival in London's Mill Hill on Saturday 18 July 2009. Later they were scheduled to play at the Play it Loud IV in Bologna, Italy, in September 2009. The festival was then cancelled when the promoter forfeited, but the band (urged on by a crowd of fans who had already bought tickets) managed to play the date along with a number of originally billed acts (as a single-day event instead of a weekend-spanning one). The band made a successful appearance at the British Steel festival in Bolognia Italy in November 2010 at the Estragon venue on a bill that included other classic bands of the NWoBHM era - Diamond Head, Girlschool, Demon and Angelwitch. They also played at the Academy Birmingham with the band Jameson Raid. The current line-up continues to tour the UK and Europe. They did a short tour of Greece and Cyprus in November 2011 and released the Limited Edition "Live in Europe 2011". Festival appearances in 2012 included Sweden's "Muskelrock" and headlining Germany's Sword Brothers. In spring 2013, Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper will be recording a new studio album, their first since 1987, for release later in the year. The band are confirmed as headliners of this year's British Steel festival in London in June and co-headliners of Belgium's Heavy Sound Festival in November with Tokyo Blade. More European Festivals and a US tour are planned for 2013.In April 2014, Grim Reaper played their first show in the US since 1987, joined by original guitarist Nick Bowcott, and featured several tracks from the forthcoming album, From Hell.

Album:

Tough times for Steve Grimmett precede the release of Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper At The Gates. He lost a portion of his right leg and then his brother died. Dark songs are inspired by Grimmett’s hospital stay. Due to a deterioration of his mental health, he needed help from band members to write lyrics and melodies. He explains “It’s a slight departure from what we normally do…it’s us with a modern edge…we didn’t use all the clashing chords which is typical of Grim Reaper.” Grimmett’s promo material touts his powerful vocal range is still as strong now as it was over 30 years ago.Grimmett’s analysis of the band’s direction is accurate. Their sound has a modern feel which occasionally sounds like latter day Accept or Judas Priest. Unfortunately, the quality of song structure, melodies, and lyrics aren’t up to those standards and Grimmett’s vocals don’t measure up to his capability from earlier decades. Both “At The Gates” and “Venom” open the album with solid riffs that whet a listeners appetite for an inspired chorus or signature bridge to take the songs to the next level. Sadly their potential is never fully realized. The remaining songs follow a pattern of place holding riffs lacking melodic hooks combined with respectable guitar solos appearing out of an ether of averageness. The effect is startling rather than a culmination of built up tension. Grimmett tries to compensate for this malaise by inserting vocal fills which are clearly no longer in his range. The one song which clearly outshines the rest is “A Knock At The Door”. The big melodic hooks and addition of backing vocals give this song a profound 80s Metal swagger. The tempo changes, solid guitar soloing and restrained vocal performance earn it a spot on your playlist. The toll of painful personal events experienced by Grimmett make the mere existence of At The Gates an inspiration. Grimmett still has impressive pipes, but he over exerts himself attempting to elevate average material.

Album:

We were about to post the just released Japanese reissue on SHM-CD of GRIM REAPER‘s debut album, 1983’s “See You In Hell“, and then read the sad news: the band’s frontman Steve Grimmett died suddenly & unexpectedly yesterday, aged 62. This serves as fitting tribute to ‘the man with the piercing head voice’ (RIP).GRIM REAPER’s story begins in 1979 after successfully fighting off hundreds of bands in a local Battle Of The Bands competition. This win, combined with an already sizeable following, aroused the interest of Ebony Records. Signing with the small U.K. label, GRIM REAPER released three albums in rapid succession to international acclaim. Due to legal turmoil with Ebony, the original GRIM REAPER would disband in 1988. Grimmett would go on to record with ONSLAUGHT, LIONSHEART and more recently THE SANITY DAYS. His renowned vocal range remains one of metal’s most identifiable from the NWoBHM era.“See You In Hell” deserved this pristine SHM-CD: over the years there has been poor sounding reissues. Additionally, songs like ‘The Show Must Go On’ were cut at the end. Here we find the original versions, plus a the original LP front/back artwork replica.Part of the new wave of British heavy metal, GRIM REAPER formed in Worcestershire in 1979 and Grimmett joined in 1982, replacing Paul de Mercado on vocals. Grimmett cited Elton John as an unlikely inspiration and “the reason I sing”. He also referenced David Coverdale, Dio and Judas Priest’s Rob Halford as influences.Grimmett would become the only constant member of the band during their two stints together, until 1988 and then again from 2006 to 2022 as ‘Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper’.GRIM REAPER released their debut album, ”See You in Hell”, in 1983, distributed by RCA. It worked very well in Europe & Japan, as well as reached No 73 in the US Billboard album chart, where appeared in 1984.‘Dead on Arrival’ had me for a while as my favorite track but ‘Liar’ is indeed the best-written track being both in your face and memorable. It still sends shivers on the back of my neck when I hear it to this day. ‘Wrath of the Ripper’ is probably better known for its chorus rather than its verse, which is good yet nothing special.‘Now or Never’ has a great ’80s heavy riff that works well with the overall structure of the song, then ‘Run for your Life’ has a cool intro and verse that has a melodic feel to it.With ‘The Show Must Go On’ the band proves they weren’t a one trick pony: this midpaced tune has an almost hard rock / pop atmosphere and progressive at the same time. The LP end with the metallic ‘All Hell Let Loose’ arguably one of the better written songs here. It has a top-notch speedy riff together with vocals to make your ears bleed. When combined it forms a no thrills classic metal stomp.GRIM REAPER’s “See You In Hell” is far from perfect, but has ‘that magic’… that ’80s magic when metal was ‘real metal’, that urgency, a band hungry to rock hard. Recorded in only 4 days, “See You In Hell” shows its budget, but its freshness at the same time. This Japanese SHM-CD is the best version we ever heard. R.I.P. Steve Grimmett.

Album:

We were about to post the just released Japanese reissue on SHM-CD of GRIM REAPER‘s second album, 1985’s “See You In Hell“, and then read the sad news: the band’s frontman Steve Grimmett died suddenly & unexpectedly yesterday, aged 62. His renowned vocal range remains one of metal’s most identifiable from the NWoBHM era."Fear No Evil ” deserved this pristine SHM-CD: over the years there has been poor sounding reissues.Fear No Evil is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Grim Reaper, released in 1985 under the British independent label Ebony Records.
