Bio:

Saxon are an English heavy metal band which formed in 1976, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. As front-runners of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, they had eight UK Top 40 albums in the 1980s including four UK Top 10 albums and two Top 5 albums. The band also had numerous singles in the UK Singles Chart and chart success all over Europe and Japan, as well as success in the USA. Between 1980 and 1987 Saxon established themselves as one of Europe's biggest metal acts. They still tour regularly and have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Saxon have also influenced many bands such as Metallica and Megadeth.Somewhere around South Yorkshire, UK there was a band that started life as SOB during 1976 with founder members Graham Oliver and Steve Dawson. This band joined forces with another local band, Coast, featuring Biff Byford on vocals and Paul Quinn on guitar. The two bands then finalised with a line-up comprising of the then 26 year old Graham 'Oly' Oliver, Steve 'Dobby' Dawson (27), Paul 'Blute' Quinn (26), Pete 'Frank' Gill (27) and Peter 'Biff' Byford (27). The name of the band was Son Of A Bitch. That name was dropped a few years later and the band re-christened themselves SAXON. They were at this time playing the usual rock clubs and concert gigs supporting The Ian Gillan Band and Heavy Metal Kids, amongst others, playing all their own material. Demo tapes were recorded at Tapestry Studios, with producer John Verity (Ex. Argent singer/guitarist). They hawked these round the usual record companies only to be ignored as the New-wave was at its height at this time. After a few months the band finally gained a favourable reaction from EMI man Peter Hinton. He had come up to Barnsley to see the band play at the town's Civic Hall. He was very impressed and recommended SAXON to Claude Carrere as candidates for his new label on the British scene, Carrere Records. Claude decided to offer them a contract, after hearing the band's demo tapes.Saxon released their nineteenth studio album, Call to Arms, on 3 June 2011. It debuted at number 6 on the UK Rock Albums chart. The band embarked on a world tour which saw them visit the US; Saxon also revisited the UK for a second leg of the tour. The band announced on their Call To Arms tour that a number of fans at each venue each paying £10 would be able to watch them soundcheck. This was donated to the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy and Childline charities. In December, Byford joined Metallica on stage to perform "Motorcycle Man" for the band's 30th anniversary show. Saxon were billed as special guests supporting Judas Priest at Hammersmith Apollo on 26 May 2012. Saxon also played Download Festival 2012, and were recorded playing "Wheels Of Steel" for the festival's Highlights show shown on Sky Arts. On 13 February 2012, the band announced that they were releasing a new live DVD and CD package entitled Heavy Metal Thunder - Live: Eagles Over Wacken, which compiled their 2004, 2007 and 2009 performances at the Wacken Open Air across various formats. In March, Saxon won the Metal Hammer 2012 Golden God award for 'Best UK band'.In October 2012, the band announced that their next studio album would be titled Sacrifice and it was released on 25 February 2013. On 11 December 2012 Heavy Metal Thunder - The Movie saw an international release and was the first Blu-ray release for the band.

Album:

Rock the Nations is the eighth studio album by heavy metal band Saxon released in 1986 (see 1986 in music). The album is the first not to feature original bassist Steve Dawson, who had left the band earlier in 1986. For the recording of this album, vocalist Biff Byford recorded all the bass parts in Dawson's place. However, Paul Johnson joined the band as bassist before the album was released and is therefore credited in the liner notes. Elton John is featured on the songs "Party Til You Puke" and "Northern Lady".Rock The Nations received mixed reviews from critics. Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic gave the album two stars out of five and said in his review for the band's previous album Innocence Is No Excuse that "Saxon's internal chemistry was significantly unbalanced by the subsequent departure of key songwriter [Steve] Dawson -- a loss from which they would take years to fully recover." in his review for this album, he said that although the album was "graced with a somewhat rougher sound more in line with the band's New Wave of British Heavy Metal early years" it was still "arguably less heavy than its predecessor" and also criticised the songs "We Came Here To Rock", "Running Hot" and the title track for being "cliché-ridden" and "Waiting For The Night" and "Northern Lady" for being "unconvincingly sappy ballads", though he did regard "Party 'til You Puke" as being "good for a laugh" and also of interest for the guest appearance of Elton John. However, he concluded that the album is one that "the Saxon faithful would likely rather forget".All songs written and composed by Biff Byford, Paul Quinn, Graham Oliver and Nigel Glockler, except where noted.

Album:

Solid Ball of Rock is the tenth studio album by heavy metal band Saxon released in 1990.Five of the 11 tracks on Solid Ball of Rock were written by new bassist Nibbs Carter, who co-wrote an additional three songs. This album is way the fucking Hell better than the last album. Suckstiny, I mean that was just pure crap. This is only halfway to pure crap, and in fact the first few songs are completely excellent!!The title track starts things off, and man this is a fun catchy song. "The preacher found redemption in a Jacksonville motel..." - then Altar of the Gods is classic Saxon, at 100% strength. Requiem is a bit slower, but still very good, as is Lights in the Sky."I Just Can't Get Enough" is a bit cheesier, but still solid. A little 80s-rock influence, coming from their last N albums, but then again this isn't all that far removed from Wheels of Steel or something in the general 80s-metal vibe. Nice chorus, too."Baptism of Fire" is the obligatory speed metal offering, and is probably the highlight of the album - either this or the title track. This one reminds me of "Sixth Form Girls" from their very strong (arm of the law) second album. Here is where the album takes a fucking nosedive... "Ain't Gonna Take It" is crap that combines the worst of two or three Saxon songs that I can't remember... sounds like a leftover from the Destinshit album. "I'm on Fire" is a bit better but they blatantly rip off a solo from a Boston song. I forget which, but it's readily obvious, and it's one of the classic rock staple songs... can't miss it. "Refugee" is more crap, unfortunately. "Bavarian Beaver" is a bit of a noodle bit, and then "Crash Dive" - not bad, and a good closer track. Nice riff after the chorus. So this album totally takes a sinker about halfway through, but the first six songs are all excellent, and for that the album is possibly worth having. If you like some of the more rockish Saxon albums (not the really bad ones like Destiny or Elton John the Nations, but I mean Power and the Glory), you'll like this one.

Album:

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the British Metal rockers' 1984 album including nine bonus tracks. Crusader was produced by Kevin Beamish at Sound City in Los Angeles (a far cry from their South Yorkshire roots!). According to singer Biff Byford, "We were trendsetters back then. Today, everybody from Trivium onwards dresses like knights going to the crusades, and writes lyrics about it. But back then it was virtually unheard of for a Metal band to do anything like that." As well as previously unavailable demo versions of the album's 'A Little Bit of What You Fancy', 'Sailing to America', a cover of the Sweet's 'Set Me Free' and the title track, this edition now includes the rare tracks 'Borderline' and 'Helter Skelter'. EMI. 2009. Crusader is the sixth studio album by the heavy metal band Saxon released in 1984. The album sold over 2 million copies.Of the title of the album and the title track, bassist Steve Dawson has said that "In England, there's a paper called the Daily Express, and on the logo at the top of the paper, there's a crusader, and there was a car made by Ford called a Cortina Crusader. That's what started it off. We just liked the name "Crusader". We didn't have any connotations of what it meant as far as history goes, but we just liked the name "Crusader", so we just wrote the lyrics to fit the title, really."The album reached No. 1 in the metal charts in Sweden, France and Germany. It also charted in the U.S. Billboard chart.

Album:

Some classic SAXON albums is its remastered / extra tracks edition have been requested here, so let's start with the band's terrific fourth LP. "Denim And Leather [Remastered, Extra Tracks Edition]" features no less than 9 bonus tracks, including single B-sides, a killer 1981 show and a complete booklet in the Rock Candy fashion with rare photos and liner notes by specialist Malcolm Dome in cooperation with Biff Byford.Saxon's "Denim And Leather" is a true classic which caught the band at an early commercial and creative peak, and features the classic singles ‘Princess Of The Night’, ‘Never Surrender’ and a tribute to their appearance at the first Castle Donington Festival (now Download), ‘And The Bands Played On’.Saxon pumped out plenty of great, punchy heavy metal tunes during the early '80s. It's what they specialised in. The songs were consistently melodic heavy and enjoyable to listen to, and this particular album captures Saxon at the height of their creativity. From start to finish, "Denim And Leather" has plenty of great moments to be cherished by any classic rock fan, and has influenced many bands in years to come.‘Princess Of The Night’ is a midtempo heavy song about trains (not quite what the title may imply) and carries a fantastic chorus chorus. There are certain riffs that may remind you of some early Metallica songs, and those guys, particularly Lars Ulrich, did indeed take a lot of influence from NWOBHM bands.'Never Surrender' is about soldiering on past the obstacles in your way, and serves as a fist pumping motivational song with its chants of "Never surrender!" in the chorus. A true anthem. The title track is possibly the best song on the album. It may slow down the tempo a bit, but the pounding drums are so powerful and is a great accompaniment to an anthem that is about the heavy metal subculture. It's the closest the band gets to arena rock on this album, and anybody who is fond of classic metal is bound to go crazy over this song. It's easy to fall in love with.Another favorite of mine, "And the Bands Played On" is another classic, influenced by Saxon's performance at a music festival alongside other hard rock and heavy metal acts, and the reactions and the feelings among the audience members, sitting through varied weather conditions just to catch their favorite bands. It's something of an hymn for rock and metal music festivals worldwide, and the overwhelming passion of the fans going there. There are some other great moments on the album like 'Out of Control', 'Rough and Ready' and 'Play It Loud' which have a more hard rock influence in terms sound, yet they stand well with the more "metal" songs such as the ones listed above. "Play it Loud" is simply about fighting for your right to blast out hard rocking music despite the urges you get from others to turn it down. It may seem ridiculously clichéd now, but in the '80s these lyrics ruled. This remastered reissue includes a bunch of juicy bonus tracks in the form of the B-sides '20,000 Ft. [Remix]' and 'Bap Shoo Ap [Live 1980]', plus songs recorded during the Denim And Leather Tour, taped at different shows like the Hammersmith Odeon, Rainbow, etc.All worthy material."Denim And Leather" is the definition of early '80s British heavy metal, for me the best Saxon ever. It's a classic, and its influence on later bands cannot be denied. This is a really complete - and I must must say, definitive - remastered reissue, with a terrific sound and excellent packaging.

Album:

Parlophone is releasing "The Complete Albums 1979-1988" from British legends SAXON, a limited edition 10-CD box set featuring digitally remastered and expanded editions of the pioneer metal band studio albums from the period between 1979 and 1988, including Saxon, Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and leather, The Eagle has Landed, Power and the Glory, Crusader, Innocence is No Excuse, Rock the Nations and Destiny.Apart from the original albums remastered and with cardboard sleeves that replicate the original front and back artwork of the vinyl LP's, you have 67 BONUS tracks of B-sides, live cuts and rarities.Innocence Is No Excuse is the seventh studio album by heavy metal band Saxon released in 1985. It was the group's first album for EMI after a falling-out with their previous label, Carrere Records, and their last with original bassist Steve Dawson.I have chosen from the bunch 1985's "Innocence Is No Excuse", one of the most commercial sounding Saxon albums ever and one that questioned the band's 'street-level credibility'. Well, at least when released, because now "Innocence Is No Excuse" is considered by many (including rabid fans) the strongest record in Saxon's discography. This is my favorite Saxon album of all time. It's more commercial than the previous NWOBHM material and the in-between radio-friendly sound from the '80s / '90s."Innocence Is No Excuse" is 'arena rocking' in formula and has a polished production job, but still retaining its heavy metal roots: the best of both worlds. The glossy production with the guitars and their crystalline sustain, the fat bass lines and drums echo louder than ever, enhanced the best written pack of songs included into a Saxon album since its foundation. It's a vast sound that increases the scope and atmosphere. At the forefront, Byford's lead vocals are not only more fine-tuned, but they're actually singing catchy choruses. From the cryptic opening of "Rockin' Again" to the cheerful "Back On The Streets" and to the spirited "Everybody Up" (used in the 1985 Italian horror movie Demoni), this is like listening to a re-invigorated band. There's not a single weak song on this album, all are great, but if I have to highlight one, the midtempo "Broken Heroes" is probably my favorite Saxon song ever.Of all the gloomy, solemn songs this band wrote, this one is the best at capturing its themes without compromising the music. Byford's sullen delivery is exemplary, as well as the accompanying guitar leads that ring fervently with that clean distortion. Behind it all is Glockler's artillery-loud pounding, as well as the flabby bass gliding along with it. Such an intense song with an infectious chorus to match. If you never heard Saxon's "Innocence Is No Excuse" you're missing a great '80s album. This is a great opportunity to ride into it as the remaster is awesome, and the 6 bonuses a very nice addition including the fantastic "Back On The Streets (12'' Club Mix)"."The Complete Albums 1979-1988" is a highly recommended purchase to re-discover this talented band, and if you're a fan and don't yet have the separate remasters, get this box pronto because it's out at a really nice price and you would pay a lot more for them separately.

Album:

British heavy metal legends SAXON will release "Let Me Feel Your Power", their tenth live album, on September 23 in Europe and October 7 in North America via UDR Music. The 16-track album was recorded in Munich, Germany during November 2015 and Brighton in January 2016, with bonus material from Chicago in September 2015."Let Me Feel Your Power" will be available in several formats, including DVD/2CDs, Blu-Ray/2CDs, digital download and a deluxe vinyl version which will also include the Blu-ray, DCD and CD (limited to 1500 copies). In a 2015 interview with 100 Percent Rock magazine, SAXON frontman Biff Byford spoke about the difficulty of putting together setlist for the band's tours. He said: "Yeah, it is difficult with the setlist, because you can't play for as long as we'd like. It's difficult to please people, because you get quite a lot of new fans that come to concerts, they want to hear the old songs, and some of the guys that have been coming for years have heard the old songs too much and they want something new, so it's a nightmare."You can never please everyone and it's actually a bit stupid trying, really," he continued. "Just put some good songs together and promote the new album, and that's where to be, really."Byford added that he is mostly proud of all SAXON has achieved in its forty-year existence."Have SAXON achieved everything I initially dreamed the band could? More or less," he said. "There were certainly countries we probably could have been bigger in. Australia's one of them, places like that. I don't think our management at that time really thought we'd ever be anything more than a British band, you know what I mean? I don't think their vision included the world."It is a shame, because I think 'Wheels Of Steel' and those albums could have been much more in people's minds outside Europe. I mean, America was all right, we did okay in America, but other countries could have gone better, I think."But I think we've achieved most everything, really. You know, we're still making great albums, so I suppose that's something."

Album:

SAXON are one of the immortals of heavy metal. That's a fact. Their latest LP "Sacrifice" coasted through from last year into this one and now comes "Unplugged and Strung Up", a back catalog visit featuring interpretations of SAXON tracks through orchestral accompaniment, acoustic revisions and re-recordings. If you buy the double disc digipak, you'll get "Heavy Metal Thunder", not the fantastic recent docufilm, but a CD bearing re-recordings of the band's classics.Unfortunately, what's wrong about "Unplugged and Strung Up" is that a considerable number of the main program's tracks have already been released before, i.e. the orchestrated version of "Call to Arms", plus five songs that were featured on the bonus disc of the "Sacrifice" special edition: "Crusader (Orchestrated Version)", re-recorded versions of "Just Let Me Rock" and "Forever Free", plus acoustic takes of "Requiem" and "Frozen Rainbow".If you missed out on these previously, then "Unplugged and Strung Up" is your chance to hear SAXON do some pretty killer overhauls on most of those previously-mentioned tunes plus orchestral versions of "Red Star Falling" and "Broken Heroes" along with acoustic treatments of "Coming Home" and "Iron Wheels". Of the orchestral songs, the most impressive is "The Eagle Has Landed" with its dense layers of metal, synths and strings, all superbly mixed. Of the acoustic songs, "Frozen Rainbow" from "Saxon" is the most remarkable, stripped down to a gentle ballad with its twelve string textures and sensuous solo. The live acoustic version of "Iron Wheels" is one of the most poignant tracks on "Unplugged and Strung Up", served as a biographical account of Biff Byford's father. Then the swampy moonshine slides of "Coming Home" from "Killing Ground" is a knee-pumping bit of fun as SAXON's tribute to Robert Johnson and American delta blues. There are new takes of "Battle Cry" from "Rock the Nations" and "Militia Guard", plus a remix of "Stallions of the Highway", the latter two coming from the first album. These songs have been tweaked and re-recorded with extra layers. In the case of "Militia Guard", there are traces of acoustic guitars filtering behind the main drive of the song, accenting it more than the original cut. To SAXON's credit, this new version of "Militia Guard" is very strong. In all honesty, the re-recording of "Just Let Me Rock" is throwaway since the "Crusader" version is plenty hefty and the new version doesn't have the same drag-lurch-stomp feel of the original. The update of "Forever Free" is agreeable enough, but hardly necessary, which leads to an argument of weakness in this project, especially the "Heavy Metal Thunder" bonus CD. The re-recordings on that disc are fine, that's not the issue. Everything is delivered faithfully and professionally from Biff Byford, Paul Quinn, Nibbs Carter, Nigel Glockler and Doug Scarratt. "Wheels of Steel", "Princess of the Night", "Motorcycle Man", "Dallas 1pm", "747 (Strangers in the Night)" and "Denim & Leather", they're all there as a plausible overview of the band's best songs. If you're a newcomer to SAXON and want to save some scratch instead of digging up the band's esteemed first six albums, that's your prerogative and the "Heavy Metal Thunder" disc will suit you fine. Yet, as competent and proficient as SAXON's current lineup is, you're still short-changing yourself by not owning the original records that included Graham Oliver, Steve Dawson and Pete Gill. If you're a longtime fan, "Unplugged and Strung Up" is thus either mandatory or not, depending upon how deep your SAXON section runs on your shelf.Frankly, the recent trend of hard rock and heavy metal legacy acts re-recording their best-known catalog as bonus albums is irksome, as annoying as the rock 'n roll and doo-wop heroes of the fifties re-recording their songs in piss-poor fashion during the seventies and early Eighties. Thankfully, "Heavy Metal Thunder" in this package is hardly piss-poor, but it is by all means, annoying. SAXON has been riding tall for numerous albums straight now. "Unplugged and Strung Up" is a gimmick, let's face the facts. Those who have yet to dig into its material are hardly going to cry foul but nevertheless, this package was hardly needed.

Album:

British legends SAXON have a new album ready, their 21st studio recording entitled "Battering Ram" expected for October 16, 2015, through UDR Music GmbH.The first single and title track has just been released exclusively at iTunes, a rocking track very much in Saxon's '80s style.Speaking about the musical direction of Saxon's follow-up to 2013's 'Sacrifice', the band's frontman, Biff Byford, said: "Some of it is quite brutal, but there's quite a lot of melodic stuff on there as well. Every Saxon album is different to the one before because we like to entertain people and we don't really like to write the same song all the time".However, the CD's title cut is "a bit like our classic 'Heavy Metal Thunder', just modernized to present times. Classic stuff.""Battering Ram" is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Accept), co-produced by Byford.

Album:

Saxon isn't wasting any time in 2018. Following the critically acclaimed release of "Battering Ram" in 2015, the heavy metal giants are set to release their latest studio album, "Thunderbolt", via the Militia Guard label (Silver Lining Music). The new album will feature original artwork by long time Saxon collaborator Paul Raymond Gregory. “This is album 22 and it's a storming smashing thundering collection of tracks we've been crafting with producer Andy Sneap and it's finished ready to be unleashed. Stand clear and fasten your seat belts”, says Biff Byford. Since the 70s Saxon has shown its ability to take rock 'n' roll and give it an electrifying edge which has since cemented their status as pioneers of the British heavy metal wave. With over twenty studio albums under their belt, Saxon has made their steadfast dedication to creating a dynamic body of a work a staple of their career.

Album:

With a massive parp of the trumpets, and deservedly so, Saxon are celebrating their 40th Anniversary. Along with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement, whose first LP was Saxon’s eponymous debut, there’s been a lot of great music; Samson, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Girlschool, Praying Mantis to name just a few.But Saxon, twin guitar classic metal, this is where it’s at. No-one has epitomised British heavy metal more, few have matched their consistency, on record and on stage, for the last 40 years. And since 2000 Saxon have been riding the crest of a wave. The current line-up of founder members Biff Byford and Paul Quinn, guitarist Doug Scarratt, bassist Nibbs Carter and drummer Nigel Glocker, has been stable and rocking the world for some time. Since their NWoBHM roots, the band have gone FM friendly, rock’n’roll, power metal, back to trad metal, then in the mid 00s albums have utilised power metal to tie in prog metal, rock’n’roll, their punk influenced roots and symphonic. Then in 2018 Saxon released Thunderbolt, their heaviest album to date and most successful in many years. This live set has much to celebrate, and it does so immaculately. Seriously. Even before you hit ‘play’ (or place the needle in the groove), the packaging alone is something to behold. A triple CD in a digipak with booklet, lovely for a start. Or then there’s the heavyweight vinyl, 5 LPs each in a sleeve with a different band member, a playing mat and a thick 12” book full of memorabilia and old press cuttings. Well worth the expense!Celebrating 40 years with 40 tracks, songs are taken from across the career; well, the 80s, 00s and 10s, the 90s have been criminally overlooked. No fan favourite ‘Solid Ball Of Rock’ – a sackable offence surely? That said, much of the tracks here show why Saxon are my favourite live band (and a favourite for many) – if for no other reason that Saxon have a broad catalogue and they have confidence in it. Tracks are played from across their career.I was at each of the London shows from which tracks were taken here (I’ve only missed one London show in over 20 years) and in each case they’ve played 5 or 6 from the then current album. Since Killing Ground, confidence in themselves has increased and who can blame them? Equally, setlists vary, a whole lot more than most.‘State Of Grace’ is a great opener, as there’s a few atmospheric bars before you are hit in the face by a sledgehammer. And as it leads into ‘Red Star Falling’, Biff introduces the song; he’s always one to talk to the audience, never shy, you know where you stand with this band. Another song with atmospheric moments.Tracks like’ Demon Sweeney Todd’ mix high speed guitar work with chunky riffs, Scarratt and Quinn a solid pair with a lot of chemistry.Plenty of new tracks and confidence in them, and rightfully so, there’s too many bands live in the past. But when older tracks like ‘Machine Gun’ are introduced, there’s a roar from the crowd. The more melodic ‘Rock’n’Roll Gypsy’ also goes down well, it also sounds good amongst the heavier more recent material, some good variation. There’s some very neat guitar work going on in the middle there too.Nice to see rarer tracks like ‘Play It Loud’ get an airing too.‘Princess Of The Night’ is another old classic, where the audience get a chance. You can almost hear Biff patrolling the stage like a lion does the Serengeti, yet managing the audience like a lion tamer, the man has class and one of the best front men around.A very touching moment is bringing out ‘Fast’ Eddie Clark when recently supported by Fastway, to play ‘The Ace Of Spades’, raising a glass to Lemmy. I was lucky to meet Eddie after the show, that was an evening to remember. Motorhead and Saxon have history, about which Saxon recorded ‘They Played Rock’N’Rol’l, also featured here.40 live Saxon tracks, new and old, recorded since 2007, what’s not to love? And the selection also means there’ll be tracks you may not have heard live before, rather than the usual setlist regurgitation (something Saxon never do). There will always be debate over set lists; I may be alone in wishing they’d drop Wheels Of Steel, but with such a strong catalogue you can’t bear grudges. Just please take note of the frown about ‘Solid Ball Of Rock’, ‘Dogs Of War’ or ‘Unleash The Beast’.Live album of the year, and the forthcoming 40th Anniversary tour is going to be something to look forward to.Saxon and their current label never fail to impress.

Album:

British Heavy Metal legends Saxon will deliver a full-roar-fun-down set of covers on March 19th 2021 (Silver Lining Music), with their latest album Inspirations, which drops a brand new 11 track release featuring some of the superb classic rock songs that influenced Biff Byford & the band.No matter if "Paint It Black" by ROLLING STONES, "Bomber" by MOTÖRHEAD or AC/DC's "Problem Child" to name just a few, these rock classics in SAXON style sound fresh, put you in a good mood and Biff Byford shows how multi-layered his vocals can be.We all have music that inspires us to do greater things, and Heavy Metal legends Saxon are no exception, but their case they’ve taken a look at those inspirational tracks and created a covers album from it.Has to be said however, that they themselves have prompted many a band to into being, in the first place! The Rolling Stones `Paint It Black’ gets the party started and here whilst the arrangement is essentially the same as the original, Biff Byford’s vocal adds a darker, more intense feeling to the iconic song.Led Zeppelin always had an immense sound but the Saxon boys have made `Immigrant Song’ heavier and meatier than ever in their punchy version. It’s inevitable that The Beatles would show up somewhere here and `Paperback Writer’ has gained some attitude and power since its original outing but still retains the singalong charm that hooked so many fab four fans back in the day.Byford does a brilliant Ozzy style delivery on `Evil Woman’ as the drums pound out the beat accentuated by powerful riffery. Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt rock out their twin guitar fretboard magic on Jimi Hendrix’ Blues rocker `Stone Free’ which oozes energy from start to finish. The Saxon wheels of steel roll out the heavy artillery with Motorheads Bomber’ which hammers full steam along the tracks, taking no prisoners as this headbanging classic smashes home. Hurtling headlong along the highway, Deep Purples `Speed King’ is treated to some superb axe wizardry and a stellar performance from Byford who is on fire here. Lizzy’s `The Rocker’ gets the twin guitar treatment which, of course wasn’t present on the original but sounds all the better for it.Taking a curved ball from the rest of the tracks, and showing a softer side to the guys, comes Toto’s `Hold The Line’. No namby pamby keyboards here however, guitars all the way! With the energy rising still, a sure-fire way to get things jumping is to add some AC/DC and `Problem Child’ fits the bill perfectly. It may not be quite as raw as the Angus original but it still rips your face off!Bringing proceedings to a brilliant close, The Kinks `See My Friend’ slows things down but still keeps the heat turned up on this great rendition of the iconic track and shows more emotion in Byfords voice than seen elsewhere.Inspirations’ was recorded old school with Real drums and Marshall amps at Brockfield House, York during lockdown. Byford produced the record with Jacky Lehmann (Accept) mixing and recording. The raw, back to basics feel comes across and in its own way, helps to pay homage to Saxons musical heroes. This album gives a rare insight into what makes a band like Saxon tick and shows they’re not afraid to jump out of their comfort zone.

Album:

A true lost gem of the 80's new wave of heavy metal. Saxon at Donnington is a great representation of the new wave of british heavy metal that began in the eighties. There is no doubt that Saxon, along with other bands (Motorhead /Iron Maiden), led the way and influenced a generation that followed.Saxon at Donnington is a great representation of the new wave of british heavy metal that began in the eighties. There is no doubt that Saxon, along with other bands (Motorhead /Iron Maiden), led the way and influenced a generation that followed. To see Saxon live was a breath taking event that I personally witnessed on several occassions. They are the unsung metal heroes of the eighties that many bands, such as Metallica, even credit as a very important influence. The quality of this release is marred only because it sounds as if this recording had been shelved for so long. Obviously forgotten and that is unfortunate for listeners. It would have been worth the expense for the label of this CD to have spent a little added time to clean up this recording with the convience of modern 1990's technology. Otherwise this is a stellar performance by one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time. If you are a true metal fan you should own this for the point that it is Saxon! The oddity of this disc is a track called "Bap Shoo Ap" which, as far as I know, is not on any Saxon album from that time period. Also, track 10 indicates "backstage interviews" but curiously there are no interviews. My guess is this CD might have been rushed, which explains sound quality and fair packaging. But any true metal fan will still appreciate the passion in Saxon's powerful performance.

Album:

Saxon, those seminal British heavy metal heroes hailing from Barnsley, UK, will release "Carpe Diem" through Silver Lining Music. Ten titanic tracks bristling with steel-clad riffery and proud intent, "Carpe Diem" is the statement which reminds heavy metal fans worldwide who the true masters of British metal are, drawing on a variety of ingredients from their career to forge what is Saxon's most dynamic release in many a year."It all starts with the riff", says frontman and co-founder Biff Byford, "if the riff speaks to me, then we're on our way. It's a very intense album and that's all down to the fact that the essence of a great metal song is the riff that starts it, and this album has loads of them."From the title track's roll-back attack to the incessant speed and power of "Super Nova", this is Saxon at its purest and most definitive, aggressively parading the pure metal flag and imploring fans old and new to gather and celebrate the very best of both Saxon and the genre itself. "All For One" has the stomp and pure power of a "Princess Of The Night", while "The Pilgrimage" is classic "Crusader" era Saxon. Produced by Andy Sneap (Judas Priest, Exodus, Accept and Richie Faulkner) at Backstage Recording Studios in Derbyshire with Byford with Sneap mixing and mastering, "Carpe Diem" strikes the ear as one of the most essential British metal statements of the last few years, one which will ignite the joy in stalwart supporters and attract a whole new legion to the Saxon fold."I love that sort of fast metal. I love 'Princess Of The Night' and '20,000 ft' and I try and bring that style of Saxon into the music now but in a bit more modern style", affirms Byford, "but it's the same five guys playing it and singing it, so I think we don't really sound like an old band on records because we're not really sitting back on our past success. We're always trying to make a great album." We want every album we make to go platinum", says Byford defiantly. "We never make an album that we don't expect to be fantastic because there are no laurels around here, only a commitment to the best songs and riffs we can write." Saxon have certainly made sure to seize the day; be sure you join them.

Album:

Some classic SAXON albums is its remastered / extra tracks edition..now with “Wheels Of Steel” the second studio album by the English band.“Wheels Of Steel [Remastered, Extra Tracks Edition]” features no less than 8 bonus tracks, including some rare tracks, a single B-side, the legendary SAXON performance at the first Castle Donington Festival, and a complete booklet in the Rock Candy fashion with rare photos and liner notes by specialist Jerry Ewing (Metal Hammer Magazine) in cooperation with Biff Byford. After finding themselves a qualified heavy metal producer in Pete Hinton, the members of SAXON recovered from their disappointing debut (at least, in sales) in fine form with 1980’s career-defining “Wheels Of Steel”.As well as effectively setting the template for the band’s most successful efforts, the album’s songs positively gleamed with a bright, metallic sheen similar to that exhibited by the chrome eagle hoisting a motorcycle wheel on its iconic cover.Wasting no time with niceties, “Wheels Of Steel” kicked straight into fifth gear with one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal’s signature anthems, “Motorcycle Man.”A proto-speed metal classic, the song also reintroduced the oft-recurring biker themes that would rear up again on the even more frenzied “Freeway Mad” and the album’s epic title track (as well as on many future tracks).Another song joining “Wheels Of Steel” in SAXON’s career roll of honor is the dramatic, lyrically unique “747 (Strangers in the Night)” – which described an airplane’s emergency landing – but a slew of additional standouts like “Street Fighting Gang,” “See the Light Shining,” the furious “Machine Gun,” and the contrastingly romantic “Suzie Hold On” (perhaps the band’s finest early ballad) rounded out the album in style. The bonus tracks include the creation stages take of ‘Suzie Hold On [1980 Demo Rehearsal]’ and “Wheels Of Steel [1980 Demo Rehearsal]”, and the awesome SAXON performance at the first edition of the now legendary Castle Donington Festival – which has built itself a reputation as the ‘spiritual home of British hard rock’ – alongside Judas Priest, Rainbow and Scorpions.“Wheels Of Steel” completes the triad heap of essential SAXON albums, pretty much hand in hand with its immediate successors, Strong Arm Of The Law and Denim And Leather. This Remastered, Extra Tracks Edition series really do justice to these essential SAXON early recordings. The mere term “remaster” is ambiguous when dealing with music made long before the digital age dawned, as it usually involves replacing the original tape with something presumably “cleaner” and more up to date (read: sterile) that all but ruins it.To me, the best remaster of an album from 1980 is one that attempts to replicate the sound of hearing a brand new copy of the original vinyl. These SAXON remasters do just that, so much so that I’ve officially retired my worn old Carrere LP pressings of these albums. If that weren’t enough, each reissue contains expanded liner notes with input from frontman Biff Byford himself, along with various clippings from the day and reproductions of the back covers of each LP, making them essential for collectors. To summarize, mandatory album, and remasters that give these 30 year old recordings a new lease on life.

Wheels of Steel is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Saxon. Released in 1980, it was their first album to enter the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 5, and is their highest-charting album in the UK Albums Chart to date. The album eventually went on to achieve gold status in the UK."747 (Strangers in the Night)" is about a power cut that forced planes in New York to remain in ascent in 1965 with the power outage provoking a Scandinavian flight to detour to Kennedy airport in the dark. The title track is featured in the video games Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned and Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony) and Brütal Legend. It has also been covered by L.A. Guns on their album Rips the Covers Off and bears a strong resemblance to the outro riff of "Rock 'n' Roll Doctor" by Black Sabbath, although according to guitarist Graham Oliver the song was actually inspired by the Ted Nugent song "Cat Scratch Fever".The album received very positive reviews from critics and is today regarded as a classic, genre-defining metal album. Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic lists the album as "topping the heap of essential Saxon albums, pretty much hand in hand with its immediate successors, Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather, effectively setting the template for the band's most successful efforts."Canadian reviewer Martin Popoff regards Wheels of Steel as a "qualified classic" and "one of really two or three of (NWOBHM's) building blocks;" it is "a record on a mission, willing to take responsibility as a spokesvinyl for legions of English punters with a thirst for regular metal guys".Sputnikmusic's Mike Stagno praises "the solid, consistent rhythms that produce the riffy, yet accessible tunes" and Biff Byford's "powerful singing", which make Wheels of Steel "perhaps not one of metal's best albums," but "still a very worthwhile album."

Album:

British Heavy Metal legends, Saxon, return with a second ‘deep dish’ serving of the inspirations which have fed their immensely successful 40+ year career. Whether unveiling a sensational take on The Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s “The Faith Healer” (in the process showing the direct lineage from teenage turntables to international glory), getting feral with The Animal’s “We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place”, letting loose a high-octane take on Alice Cooper’s “From The Inside”, or laying down a ferocious tribute to KISS’ “Detroit Rock City”, More Inspirations is a joyous trip into the sounds which galvanized the Barnsley boys and continue to get spun on home stereos and tour buses.Produced by vocalist/co-founder Biff Byford, with Seb Byford helping record the music alongside mixing engineer Jacky Lehmann, More Inspirations also includes enthusiastic takes on Alice Cooper, Rainbow, ZZ Top and Cream, as well as a thunderous “Razamanaz” by Nazareth, a tasty take on The Who’s “Substitute”, and a thick groove take on Uriah Heep’s “Gypsy”. Whether this is your first dance with such classic songs, or you’ve come to see where Saxon were born, More Inspirations delivers the goods and then some.

Album:

Saxon will release a new album, called "Hell, Fire And Damnation" and when internationally-renowned actor Brian Blessed OBE delivers a proclamation for opening track "The Prophecy", expectations are automatically high. Have no fear and make no mistake, Saxon meets and exceeds on the 24th studio release, creating a superlative British heavy metal classic which strides the perfect line between confident, current power and gloriously irreverent flexing of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal muscle which Saxon co-created.There is supreme confidence in every performance. Biff Byford delivers his richest vocals in years, Nigel Glockler and Nibbs Carter on drums and bass respectively lay down the rhythmic law with thunderous power, and the guitars of Doug Scarratt and Brian Tatler are fresh and fiery, a perfect complement to each other, and carrying an overall energy and fury which will have fans salivating. Lyrically, Byford enjoys investigating all areas of both history and mystery, with Marie Antoinette, Kubla Khan, the Battle of Hastings, the Salem witch trials and the fight between good and evil on the title track all in the mix. Musically, Saxon brings it all to the table. There's a furious tribute to actual heavy metal in the denim & leather coated super-sprint "Fire And Steel", a wonderful nod to the NWOBHM's birth in the electric mid-paced "Pirates Of The Airwaves", but maybe the true treasure amidst the jewels is "There's Something In Roswell", with the sort of expansive groove and embrace which deserves arenas. Add to this excellent production by Biff and Andy Sneap (Sneap also mixed and mastered "Hell, Fire And Damnation") and you have Saxon's most definitive statement in years.
