Bio:

Dammaj is a Traditional Heavy Metal band from San Fancisco, California, United States of America.Formed in 1978 by vocalist Greg Hill and bassist Steve Gilbert, the duo quickly added Steve's brother Mick to their ranks. In 1981 the third Gilbert brother Richie joined when he was finally old enough at the tender age of 17, giving the band the double axe attack. Early 1982 heavy drummer Bob Newkirk fresh from Michigan joined solidifying in what would become known as the band DAMMAJ.Originally more of a basic hard rock outfit, the band quickly adapted to their more comfortable role of "Metal Gods" in 1982, and became a staple band of the local club scene.Although they were San Francisco Bay Area based, the band really was international - with Greg and Bob being Americans, joined by the British brothers Gilbert. This lent to a nice blending of both American and English styles into the burgeoning metal rock sound that was being fueled by the likes of Judas Priest, UFO and the emergent New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (that brought bands such as Saxon, and Iron Maiden.DAMMAJ recorded material during the 1983/'84 New Years and finally released their album in 1986, entitled "Mutiny." Although they were not so thrilled with the cover (which they didn't have any say in), the music stood its own ground, and still is relevant in this day, as a strong reminder of what made for good, solid heavy metal/hard rock out of the SF scene. It got rave reviews in Kerrang, Metal Hammer, Enfer and various European magazines and still to this day gets good praise as a good solid album. And so now, 22 years later (and after a few one-off reunions), the boys in DAMMAJ have decided to give it another go-around in the music scene, with their years of musical introspection and playing out in a variety of other projects strengthening their skills. The decision has proven to be a popular one, as old friends and fans are flocking to see them play again, and bringing new generations of audiences and future fans.

Album:

Remastered re-release on CD of the debut full-length album by the American Epic Heavy Metal band. This band release one killer LP and one selfreleased 7'' single, and then fade away into obscurity without ever being heard from again. Dammaj was a California five piece who played tough as nails U.S. Power Metal which was loaded with a crushing bottom-end, ripping guitars and the excellent vocals of Greg Hill. Something unique about the band was that the guitarists and bassist were all brothers and that helped make them tight as all hell. The brothers really lock down on a groove or riff and exploit it to its fullest."Mutiny" features grinding guitars, a crushing bass, pounding drums, and the Rhett Forrester-like vocals of Greg Hill. In fact, Dammaj clearly knew how to mine the same rich ore that Riot used to craft their potent brand of Metal. The band serves up the galloping “Leather Master”, the titanic title cut “Mutiny”, and the epic “Gladiator”. Frankly, all the tracks are phenomenal, being both hooky and heavy, which is something many Metal bands can’t pull. One other reason why this album is an all time Metal classic is the absolutely molten mix. If one didn’t know better, you would think this was an Ebony Records release because the drums sound like 75mm pack howitzers, the bass is pounding up front, and the guitars sound like buzzing ripsaws. F*****g amazing! The engineer on the album was none other than Jim Morris of the famous Morrisound Studios in Tampa. Morris and producer Dan Johnson did a hell of a job honing this album to razor sharpness!"Mutiny" was originally released on Par Records in the U.S. and Roadrunner in Europe, but the album was only on vinyl and never made it to a CD issue. Unfortunately, the platter was very difficult to find and, as a result, was all but forgotten by the world except for a few diehard Metalheads. There have been CD bootlegs of the album floating around for years, but the sound wasn’t the greatest and the booklet was a joke.Limited Edition to only 1000 copies remastered re-edition contains from the original master tapes incl. thick booklet with a lot of photos, lyrics, original artwork and five ultra rare bonus tracks!!"Mutiny" is an amazing piece of classic U.S. Epic Power/Heavy Metal and deserves a place in every self-respecting Metalheads' collection. Buy this immediately, and if you are lucky enough to be out on the west coast, catch Dammaj live as they are playing shows again!!!
