Bio:

Best known for featuring keyboard player Barbara Schenker(founder of Hard Rock band VIVA, she wrote most of the VIVA songs. Barbara Schenker was voted as the best keyboard player by METAL HAMMER MAGAZINE in March 1985) -sister of U.F.O. and MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP guitar hero Michael Schenker and SCORPIONS rhythm guitarist Rudy Schenker, VIVA formed in 1980 in Hannover, as a very young POP Rock Band. 1980's 'Born To Rock', are handled by Frank Algermissen(vocals) alongside with guitarists Kai Reuter(17) and Ralph Murthy, bassist Andreas Kawaldt(17) and drummer Shaban Yavaz. The manager ended up behind bars and VIVA split up.Viva live 1981 Barbara Schenker formed the ROCK act VIVA at a Scorpions gig in London where she met Marc Paganini backstage inviting him to join VIVA as a frontman. Algermissen was superseded for the harder hitting Riff Rock of 'What the Hell is going on', issued by CBS Records(6 months later album will be released in Japan), by Swiss Italian frontman Marc Paganini. More changes saw Reuter departing to join JANE and guitarist Andy Fach took his position.1982 'Dealers of the Night' was promoted by touring Europe(with support from SORTILEGE on 10/10/1983 LA MUTUALITE Paris, France), especially France, Belgium and Sweden were top of the list. VIVA played 18/09/1982 MULHOUSE M. and 21/05/1983 BRUGGE Festivals along with ANVIL, URIAH HEEP,ILLER(Belgium), GARY MOORE, BARON ROJO. Then 1983 Barbara Schenker decided to leave VIVA...”the good times had gone straight to the guys head". Just 6 months later Marc Paganini quit as well.Paganini recorded one more album with VIVA, 1982's 'Dealers of the Night', before departing. The frontman would re-emerge in 1985 with his own band PAGANINI, debuting with 'Weapon Of Love' in 1985 on the Vertigo label. Ex-VIVA guitarist Ralph Murthy followed the singer into the ranks of PAGANINI. VIVA re-grouped in 1984 and returned with The 'Apocalypse' album, which featured new vocalist Chris Thow. Michael Lauer was also added to the ranks on keyboards, replacing Barbara Schenker.Towards the group's eventualBrujas Festival demise, British ex DETROIT vocalist Andy Pyke joined before he opted to form MARSHALL LAW. Bizarrely Schenker was rumoured to be joining the 1985 reformation of U.F.O., but although rehearsals did take place this came to nothing. Schenker briefly joined all female Rockers ROSY VISTA and in 1988 after supporting URIAH HEEP with Berlin act AMAZONE, Barbara moved to London.Apocalypse CD cover VIVA guitarist Henrik Woltar later formed THUNDERHEAD. VIVA made an unexpected and low key return in 1996 with the independently released 'Cream Cake Box' album. Based around guitarist Andy Fach, VIVA now comprised of VELVET VIPER bassist Lars Ratz, vocalist Eddi Petersen, keyboard player Ronald Hensel and drummer R.R. Oddly the accompanying press biography with this release gives a somewhat distorted history of VIVA that makes absolutely no mention of Schenker whatsoever! Meantime, 1996 found ex-VIVA singer Marco Paganini singing on demo tracks for former SCORPIONS drummer HERMAN RAREBELL. Quite surreally, a Paganini/VIC VERGAT composition scored the duo a major hit in Germany - sung by 'Baywatch' star David Hasselhoff for the 'Pingu' kids television cartoon series!Kai Reuter re-emeged in 2000 joining FAIR WARNING. Ratz founded the chart Heavy Metal band METALIUM. 'Dealers In The Night' would see a September 2001 re-release courtesy of French label Axe Killer Records.'Dealers of the Night' 1982 album was sold over 250,000 units in Europe and hit charts # 34 in Sweden. The success(along with Europe and Japan, the album hit pretty hard Russia as well) of the album was probably because of 'Some kind of Wonderful'(a cover song of Grand Funk Railroad).URIAH HEEP gave credits to Barbara Schenker on their 1989 'Raging Silence' album.

Album:

Few weeks ago we featured here the two remastered albums by Paganini, the band formed by singer Marco Paganini after leaving German hard rockers VIVA around the mid-Eighties. So a new request raised for the 2 most renowned VIVA albums in remastered form.French label Axe Killer Records was a pioneer of hard rock-related remastered reissues with access to original master tapes, something like Rock Candy Records is doing nowadays. So here it is their remaster of VIVA's "What The Hell Is Going On!"Mostly known for being the band founded in the late Seventies by keyboardist Barbara Schenker - the sister of Michael and Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions fame - VIVA, together with Accept and Trance, is considered one of the first 'real metal' bands in Germany. Now listening to "What The Hell Is Going On!" in perpective (it was recorded in 1981), it should be considered as 'classic rock' or traditional hard rock.I still recall that I used to play the (hard to find import LP era!) vinyl version of "What The Hell Is Going On!" many many times - in turn with SAMSON's "Before The Storm", DEF LEPPARD's "Pyromania" and TYGERS OF PAN TANG's "Spellbound" - back in those days.VIVA was a five-piece band from Hannover, Germany and mainly got their media attention because the fact of Barbara Schenker relationship with the famous guitarists."What The Hell Is Going On!" is classy, pretty straight forward European Hard Rock / Metal with the typical sound from the early '80s.You know, effectively used twin guitar rhythm guitar attack with emotional guitar leads in the classsic Schenker fashion, moody keyboards and a rough, yet melodic voice, courtesy of the Swiss Marc Paganini (who replaced original vocalist Frank Algermissen)."What The Hell Is Going On!" features a nicely balanced mixture of heavier tunes like 'Little Rock Tonight' 'Break Out' or the title track, as well as a great ballad in 'Screaming For Your Love', and to me always was the more 'rocking' VIVA album (even though their follow up "Dealers Of The Night" became way more successful). They got the talent, the right label to push them (CBS) and the looks to make it pretty big, but unfortunately the usual line-up changes killed the band on the long run."What The Hell Is Going On!" needed a proper remaster, and this Axe Killer Records does the trick in spades. This is the kind of old fashioned remastering job avoiding brickwall / saturation replicating the original LP warm with a modern day clean up / dynamic range. So, if you'd like to go on a nostalgic journey, pick up "What The Hell Is Going On!" and experience the magic of timeless Hard 'n' Heavy music.By the way, it was the first time for this album available on CD, now unfortunately out of print.

So here it is their remaster of VIVA's "Dealers Of The Night", a much more melodic affair than the previous.Mostly known for being the band founded in the late Seventies by keyboardist Barbara Schenker - the sister of Michael and Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions fame - VIVA, together with Accept and Trance, is considered one of the first 'real metal' bands in Germany. After the previous hard 'n heavy LP "What The Hell Is Going On!", for this "Dealers Of The Night" the band opted for a much more melodic sound so in vogue since 1982, the orignal year of release.Somewhere in between the traditional hard rock style of the era and the realms of AOR, "Dealers Of The Night" is quite keyboard driven. You know the sound: it was 1982.'Ten Years Later' is one of my favorite tracks because of its arcade video game-like verses featuring some great keyboard licks, while 'Looking for an Answer' delivers some good pounding, atmospheric verses with a synth riff that is very similar to one that seems to be found sampled in a lot of albums to come after this one. You get the picture.More rocking appears the consistent 'Take Me to the Doors', then we have a strong power-chord progression on 'Falling In Love'.Marco Paganini is okay at what he does, goes for the more snarling attitude-filled angle than anything more high / low and technique reliant. He turns more melodic at the pre-chorus of all songs to create tension at the main choruses.Despite its 'metal epic' cover art, VIVA's "Dealers Of The Night" is a melodic hard rock album taking the tag with the mind put in 1982: lots of keyboards and accessible guitar riffs. The album needed a proper remaster, and this Axe Killer Records does the trick in spades. This is the kind of old fashioned remastering job avoiding brickwall / saturation replicating the original LP warm with a modern day clean up / dynamic range. It was the first time for this album to be available on CD, now unfortunately out of print with remaing copies being sold for over € 200.
