Bio:

Per Englund and Patrik Lämborg met for the first time while doing the mandatory Swedish military service 1985. Per sang at that time in a band called Blacksmith. Blacksmith had just finished recording their second album-single called "Tomorrows Mistery". The first Blacksmith recording was en EP called "Gypsy Queen".Per got a demo that Patrik had made a few years earlier (this demo tape also placed Patrik in the highly renowned Guitar Player spotlight column). And that was that, Patrik joined Blacksmith and Blacksmith Mk II was a fact.Blacksmith Mk II played in the limited Swedish rock scene. They also recorded an EP (1987) with songs like "World Victim" & "Angel". This EP was unfortunately never released since the band parted in 1988 (mainly due to that Patrik got some calls from USA and left to play in America). The EP master tape is unfortunately destroyed and beyond repair....Per moved on with other bands such as 220 Volt (under the name Voltergaist) during 1992-93, Mandrake Root 1994-98 (4 albums together with the Free From Sin Hammond virtuoso Staffan Stavert). Year 2000 Blacksmith Mark III recorded an album called "Once upon a star".During 2009-2010 Patrik & Per connected again and decided to record a demo in Patriks home studio. The demo contained new but also a couple of old songs. The demo turned out very well, and again the duo proved that they still can produce great hardrock/metal songs. The demo was later presented to their good friend and producer Magnus "Mankan” Sedenberg. He thought this would be a great album to make. This offcourse triggered Per & Patrik with some new energy and they decided to record the album at Pama Records Studios.Free From Sin is not a religious band, but as thinking human beings there is always room for questions.Free From Sin is a band with members worthy bearers of the legacy of the 70´s and 80´s hard rock. Free From Sin are going back to basic with classical instruments such as Hammond organ, loud guitars together with aggressively vivid vocals. With clear influences from Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Iron Maiden etc Free From Sin merges these ingredients together in an updated sound with strong riff based songs. This first album have already become a "classic" ?The band members have a background in various bands during 80, 90 and 00's but the Free From Sin band takes the plunge. Back to what for a long time shaped them as musicians and as songwriters, together with a modern sound that will most likely appeal to both older and younger listeners. There is a clear message and thought throughout the lyrics, this in combination with massive guitar riffs will for sure capture the listener's attention and thought.

Album:

"For fans of Europe, Yngwie Malmsteen, Hammerfall, Bloodbound," it says in the leaflet. Hmm, I do not know EUROPE well, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN you can leave in any case because of the extensive instrumentalization and the classic bonds and HAMMERFALL make at least halfway as meaningful as BLOODBOUND.With their debut, FREE FROM SIN is right in the middle of traditional heavy metal and hard rock, for which they, just like their countrymen mentioned, are guided by the even older pioneers. And so at least DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW are definitely lacking in terms of their influence, not only because the 51 minutes of playtime have a devastatingly haunting effect on the Hammond. No wonder the CD is dedicated to Jon Lord, according to the booklet. Only the band or their two initiators Per Englund (220 VOLTS) and Patrik Lämborg (BLACKSMITH) - not entirely unknown in the structure is drummer Jaime Salazar (THE FLOWER KINGS, ALLEN / LANDE, BAD HABIT) - the panel of honor expand the name RONNIE JAMES DIO.Not that the good Per Englund, who sometimes likes the very high to shrill sounds, the unequaled vocal god would be particularly similar, rather, the band is stylistically quite often in the immediate vicinity of its extensive work. Overall, the citation factor on the album is extremely high. Constantly you get caught in the "Das kennste doch" and "Boah, wat stolen". So "Evershine" starts with the "Painkiller" -drums, the band name oscillates between "Headless Cross" and DIO, for "Evil Or Divine" you have studied the vocal lines of IRON MAIDEN's "Flight Of Icarus" "Stumbling Down A Wicked Road" is said to be the little brother of DEEP PURPLE's "Perfect Strangers", "The Masquerade" walks in the footsteps of "Stargazer" (not just because it's almost that long), and so on and so forth , Certainly, the band makes that very conscious and the artistic claim of the multi-facetted and musically very dense disc does not actually detract, but nevertheless a good deal of seriousness and credibility is lost. And your own work and good songs like "Dreamstealer" and "Temple Of Fear" threaten to fall behind. The degree, if you can turn off the old ghosts while enjoying FREE FROM SIN completely, is in this case extremely narrow and probably every listener has to decide for themselves.CONCLUSION: It is not clear to what extent the creators of FREE FROM SIN regard their album as a tribute to their own musical role models. You can certainly hear this disc especially as a fan of the aforementioned pioneer, albeit without breaking into euphoria. A bland aftertaste affects at least the reviewer mostly with.
